Co-Curricular

AN EXCELLENT CO-CURRICULAR PROVISION THAT ENRICHES STUDENTS’ LIVES

Taking full advantage of the activities offered by King’s beyond the classroom, developing one’s existing skills, travelling, or taking on new challenges is an enjoyable way of developing as a person.

A thriving Young Enterprise programme, where our teams regularly win awards, debating, Model United Nations, chess and STEM club are a few of our more intellectual activities. There are numerous musical groups, dance and dramatic arts societies and an annual Sixth Form production offering endless opportunities to be involved. The Combined Cadet Force, comprising Army and Air Force sections, is very popular and challenging, and supports with developing attributes of leadership, responsibility, teamwork and perseverance. King’s also has its own outdoor, adventurous activities centre in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, an ideal base for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme; during the last 3 years, we have been awarded 79 Gold Awards.

Even further afield, the school’s tours and excursions regularly take students on adventures and offers the opportunity to undertake charity work in some of the most breathtaking locations on the planet. Finally, the Sixth Form Charity Committee volunteers in numerous ways, so whatever your interests are, you can always get involved and make the most of your time at King’s.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award

King’s have delivered the nationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Scheme for many years. Over 130 pupils in Years 10 – 13 have successfully completed the expedition section of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the last year, facing a wide range of challenges and overcoming them with customary King’s determination.

Resilience, communication, teamwork and dedication are key life skills that you can gain from DofE, skills which can develop your depth of character and you as a whole person, which is why these awards are held in such high regard by universities and employers alike.

For the Sixth Form DofE Gold Award, you take on a personal programme of activity covering Volunteering, Physical activities, Skills development and Expedition for an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad. This is a serious undertaking and covers all 4 sections with the additional activity being residential.

This year’s residential saw three groups of Sixth Formers endure tough weather conditions: ferocious winds in Snowdonia at Easter, and extreme heat in the Lake District in the summer. Collectively, 9,000 km of distance was covered over tough terrain, carrying heavy packs an incredible achievement for the students involved!

And, if that’s not enough, when you have received your award, you will be invited to Buckingham Palace where a member of the royal family will present you with your Gold Award certificate.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise has been a very successful and popular Lower Sixth co-curricular activity for many years, available for all students in the year group.

Teams of Year 12 students set up their companies in September and run their company as a proper business through the Young Enterprise organization, who provide them with an HSBC business account and appropriate insurance cover. The companies meet each week, firstly to decide on directors’ roles, then build the company, carry out market research and design and develop a product or service for sale nationally. After a few months, the teams present their ideas to the Showcase Event, the Worcester and Hereford round of the competition, by submitting a 10page report and a four-minute introduction of their project, followed by probing interviews from a panel of judges from the world of business and commerce. Students in the past have done incredibly well, winning awards for their efforts.

The value of the Young Enterprise experience in equipping young people for the world of work is widely recognised, developing teamwork, perseverance, the skills of target setting and the ability to work towards a common goal. The business skills you learn are second to none and many students have gone on to run their own successful companies as a career.

CCF

The School organises a contingent of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) of which it is justly proud. Over 150 pupils across the Senior School and Sixth Form are members of the two sections – Army and RAF.

Enhancing the personal development of students and providing them with opportunities to develop leadership, teamwork, self-reliance and resourcefulness is at the heart of our CCF provision.

Alongside weekly training, you will have the opportunity to take part in survival skills, assault courses, fly and glide, climb and abseil, take command when leading cadets, compete in national competitions and also use the King’s shooting range which is located in the basement of the Keyes Building. Each year the contingent runs two camp activities in the summer holidays (Army and RAF). There are also many opportunities to attend camps and activities run externally, such as a sixweek camp in Canada, adventurous training, national leadership courses, and gliding or flying scholarships.
