2021-2022 VO LU ME 6
Beyond learning to be independent, creative and responsible, and to think for themselves, our students learn to respect and celebrate diversity. At King’s, they quickly discover how the differences between us enrich our experiences and broaden our horizons.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
On behalf of the King’s Academy Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to extend my thanks and appreciation to you, our passionate and inspiring community of donors, trustees, faculty, staff, parents and alumni for the incredible difference that you are making to the school and its future generations of young leaders.
I write in this edition of The Lion’s Pride to share with you some news about a major transition happening on campus. In the spring of the 2022-2023 academic year, we will bid farewell to King’s third head of school, Peter Nilsson, and we will welcome Stephanie “Penny” Townsend as the fourth head of school.
While we are deeply thankful for and appreciative of Peter’s leadership in realizing the vision of this unique institution, especially all his hard work during the pandemic, we are also thrilled to have our first woman head of school. Penny is a passionate educator who brings to King’s extensive experience as a head of school.
I look forward to working with you, our community of loyal donors, alongside Penny, to pave the path to a brighter future, especially this year, as we celebrate King’s 15th anniversary in 2022-2023.
On the occasion of this special milestone, and as we reflect on years past and look forward to the future of King’s Academy, we need to work closely to take crucial steps and ensure that King’s Academy continues to push forward as a powerhouse of teaching and academic excellence in Jordan and beyond.
I am deeply grateful for your commendable generosity that is allowing us to offer each student with a personalized educational experience, one that our faculty and staff members are proud to provide. We must also carry on working to enrich student life in the classroom and beyond, to expand possibilities, to honor creativity, and most importantly to engage more support that would enable us to grow the school’s endowment, thus maintain a financial foundation for future generations, and keep the school on a plane of excellence in education.
Put simply, we couldn’t do it without you, our devoted friends. You are the reason we are able to provide scholarships to deserving students. Your steadfast support ensures that the brightest students come to King’s, regardless of background and circumstance, and that once they are here, they are taught by the best teachers in state-of-the-art facilities.
Today and as we take stock of philanthropy’s impact and look toward to what we all hope will be a better future, I remain optimistic — because of you. Thank you for believing in us.
Sincerely,
Ali H. Kolaghassi Chairman of the Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM CHIEF ADVANCEMENT OFFICER
Dear friends,
It gives me immense pleasure to address you in this new issue of The Lion’s Pride in my capacity as the new chief advancement officer at King’s Academy. It is both humbling and amazing to see what you — our incredibly generous donors, supporters, alumni and partners — have enabled since King’s was founded 15 years ago.
You have shown us that a generous, engaged, aware and committed donor community can make a true difference in the lives of our students, thus sustaining the excellent reputation of the school.
Fifteen years ago, we set ourselves a goal — to build philanthropy into the fabric of the school. It is because of you and your generous spirit that our students are thriving.
When you give to King’s, you help us make extraordinary things happen. Last year, with your generous support, we raised an inspiring $3,567,156 and offered our bright and deserving students a personalized educational experience to support not only their learning, but also wellness and personal growth. We also received donations towards colleges and universities, bringing our proceeds to a total of $4,178,920. In addition, I am proud to announce that new scholarships and endowed funds, as well as initiatives in innovation and entrepreneurship were established by our loyal alumni and committed supporters.
We are honored to feature your names in this edition of The Lion’s Pride. We are also glad to share the exciting news of King’s first all-alumni reunion that brought back alumni from the past 15 years, creating new memories and recreating old bonds.
Moving into Fiscal Year 2022-2023, we won’t rest on the laurels of last year. The work of building and sustaining a great institution is never done. With your support, I am confident that we can achieve our goals to continue to provide a unique educational experience to many more students from around the globe, expand King’s potential beyond its current scale, broaden our donor base and expand our alumni engagement reach.
I can never say it enough! Thank you for tirelessly giving of your own time and financial resources to support us. Your trust in King’s Academy is a source of pride for us.
With renewed thanks and appreciation,
Soha Hmaidan Chief Advancement Officer

2022 ALUMNI NEWS AND EVENTS
ALL-ALUMNI REUNION ON KING’S ACADEMY CAMPUS
For the first time in the history of King’s Academy, we hosted an all-alumni reunion on campus! All alumni, from our first graduating class of 2010 to the latest at the time (2021) were invited to attend a variety of events across four days in May. With almost 250 alumni attending throughout the weekend, the kick-off gala dinner at the Tawfiq Fakhouri Courtyard was definitely the biggest event of the weekend, full of nostalgia, friendships old and new, and heartfelt words. With over 200 alumni attending this dinner alone, we also had the pleasure of welcoming back beloved founding Head of School Dr. Eric Widmer and his wife, former Dean of the Faculty Dr. Meera Viswanathan.
Other events throughout the weekend included a traditional school meeting in the Abdul Majeed Shoman Auditorium, sit-down lunch in the Hess Family Dining Hall, a panel discussion on the future of King’s Academy, and a special dinner at the St. Regis Hotel for classes celebrating their five and ten-year reunions (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017).
REUNITING AROUND THE WORLD
This year was especially exciting as we were able to resume alumni reunions around the world. Hosting reunions across different cities has always been critical to ensuring our alumni stay connected not just to each other, but also to the school. These reunions have helped alumni meet fellow King’s
graduates who they may not have attended school with, find mentors and potential work opportunities, and learn more about the latest updates from campus.
Now that we’ve gotten the ball rolling, we’re excited to continue hosting these
gatherings in more cities. If you are alumni and you haven’t updated your information with us in a while and want to make sure you hear about events in your area, consider updating your information through the form under the alumni tab on the King’s Academy website!

WHY KING’S
AN INTERVIEW WITH TAREK AND SHIRINE AGGAD P’15,’18,’19,’24
After becoming a King’s parent, did the school meet your expectations for your children’s education?
After deciding to move Rana, my oldest, to King’s, we started noticing positive changes right away. Compared to the curriculum at her previous school, the AP system at King’s was more suitable for her character as it encourages students to be more self-confident. Rana was always a shy student, but King’s helped her grow and develop a stronger personality.
As a family, you have always generously supported King’s in different areas, such as the science department, the science lab, the arts department, and through an endowed scholarship for Palestinian students. What compelled you to give over the years?
Supporters of King’s Academy sometimes hear a lot of criticism for giving to King’s. You would arguably be able to support many more students at a cheaper institution, but I have my own opinion on that. I always refer to my own father’s history and base my support to King’s on that. My father grew up in Palestine and has a very modest background. This was during the British mandate in Palestine. He was clever and a super achiever, which is why the British government granted him a scholarship to attend Al-Rashidiya Secondary School in Al-Quds where he later received another scholarship to attend Manchester University. My grandfather owned a small corner shop and could not afford to give my father this education.
Why did you feel like the King’s Academy campus was the best location for the construction of The Omar A. Aggad Observatory, which houses the biggest telescope in the Kingdom, and is very special and meaningful to you and your family?
I have a special affinity towards King’s, so I am doing it for the community. It was so wonderful to see all these scientists and enthusiasts that have access to it now! I am hoping that King’s will give access to all academics in Jordan to be able to come to the school and use it.
My whole family is tied to the school, so choosing this location came naturally to me. If I want to do anything in Jordan, King’s is the first place that comes to mind. To be honest, the observatory is somewhat like giving a gift to myself as well, I have always been fascinated by astronomy and am grateful to have access to this beautiful equipment.
I am very impressed and proud of how it turned out. A very beautiful architectural piece to have my father’s name on it, and a great way to honor him.
What role do you think King’s plays in our society and the future of the region?
community at school. We have a lot of nationalities at King’s and I am very interested in the Pan Arab nature of it. All the students we have from the region, creating this community and connection between them, generation after generation, these students will become leaders in the future and it will tie people together.
Ever since I was on the Board of Trustees, I have been interested to know how King’s is doing and how it is developing. Everyone has great dreams and hopes for the school and we will stay around to support and help it reach those goals.
Being a parent of four King’s students, what impact has King’s Academy had on your children?
King’s creates a level of self-confidence that is very astonishing. You may not see it as a parent at home, but you always see it outside with others. Saja was a very shy individual and she is now the lead actress at school plays and performances. We just attended one of her performances and she blows us away, time after time, with the confidence she has gained. Personally, I don’t think I have the courage she has on stage or in public speaking. At the age of 16, Thaer attended a meeting with me once and surprised me when he started participating in the meeting and speaking his mind. I think the respect teachers and administrators give to students creates the high level of selfconfidence for them.
What message would you like to share with other parents and the community on the importance of supporting King’s Academy?
What encouraged you to enroll your kids at King’s Academy?
My nephew Omar was the first one from our family to attend King’s Academy back in 2011. My brother was living in Saudi Arabia and his son, Omar, was a week boarder at King’s.
When it was time for parent-teacher conferences, my brother couldn’t make it to the school and asked me to go with Omar and meet with his teachers. That was my first introduction to King’s. It was very impressive to see how students are respected and given the space to represent themselves, and very apparent
that King’s puts a lot of effort into developing the personality of these students, where they can freely and respectfully criticize and state their opinions in class. It was remarkable to meet with the teachers and be reassured that they are well-equipped to deal with students and understand their needs.
This has taught me that the impact one individual can make — given you get the right individual and the right circumstances — by truly investing in one student’s education, can be much bigger than providing a mediocre education to 50 kids. Of course, you can provide for both scenarios, but selecting an underprivileged Palestinian student, God knows what impact they will have in the future. The ideal scenario is that this student goes through King’s, gets a scholarship at a great university and becomes a person of impact.
Saja, the youngest of your four kids, graduates soon. How will your relationship with King’s continue afterwards?
My relationship with King’s will always remain. There will always be things to do for the Palestinian students at King’s. I also look forward and am eager to see how King’s will develop in the future. The endowment fund we have will continue our relationship for many years to come.
King’s Academy is a rare institution in the region, and it is developing a whole new generation of youth who have the potential to positively impact the region. I would encourage people, and especially parents who are able, to support this “Cinderella story”. Capable children should not be limited by finances. These students should be able to get a King’s education which can then help them secure scholarships to pursue higher education.
This Cinderella story is important: an underprivileged Arab child should have the opportunity to go out and excel in the world, with the end goal of leaving an impact. The more support we give to King’s, the better the outcome.

The King’s Academy Parent Council was first founded in 2013 as a special and intimate corps of volunteers who serve as representatives among the parents of King’s Academy students — strengthening the sense of a parent community and assisting in the fundraising efforts of the school.
Through the Parent Council, we invite parents to become even more active participants in their children’s education and in supporting the future of King’s Academy — as advocates for the school and its programs, as a sounding board for the head of school, and as representatives of the extended King’s Academy family.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to this wonderful group of parent leaders for their service during the 2021-2022 academic year!

HELPING KING’S REACH NEW HEIGHTS OF EXCELLENCE
AN INTERVIEW WITH SAMER AND MARAM FAKHOURI P’23, P’25
Fifteen years for a school is young, however King’s has already graduated close to 1,600 students since 2010. Those young minds have now entered the labor force and joined society with the aim of making change to foster peace and prosperity in our dear country. We would like to see more and more graduates of King’s accessing high impact careers in Jordan and across the globe, putting forward values and ethics to make this world a bit better than they found it. Young graduates of King’s get an education that helps them develop the right attitude, skills and character to live and thrive in a modern, interconnected and diverse world. We are also eager to see this school help put Jordan at the forefront of education both in the region and the world.
friendship we have developed with the King’s community, we decided to give in a more strategic and sustainable way. In 2019, we launched a new foundation — sTF5 Care — whose mission is to work with grassroots organizations to deliver evidence-based health and education solutions to the Jordanian, Palestinian and regional communities.
Can you please tell us more about “sTF5 Care” and how it started?
Before establishing sTF5 Care, we provided support to a multitude of projects that were mainly focused on education, health and community-based interventions in Jordan and Palestine. Throughout the years we wanted to transform our philanthropic activities to become more professional with a team of highly skilled experts and advisors. With them on the team, we adopted the approach of “venture philanthropy,” which aims to create long-term sustainable impact by using an evidencebased approach, working hands on with local communities, and focusing on the quality of outcomes rather than the quantity of initiatives we engage in.
What led you to enroll your children at King’s?
When Maram and I were thinking of choosing a school for our children, we were naturally looking for the best school in Jordan. Defining what “best” meant a few years back was not an easy assignment. One of the first aspects we looked at was academic rigor. We were on the lookout for a school that provides an exceptional world-class educational experience. But while the quality of education was important, we were very much aware that it was not enough. What was more crucial to us was to find a progressive environment that could
empower our children to become the leaders of tomorrow, the leaders of change in their community. King’s Academy’s mission is centered around that. It provides a multi-cultural residential community of hundreds of students representing more than 40 nationalities and this by itself is very enriching for our kids. It also focuses on personal development by providing extraordinary resources to our children which enable them to be critical thinkers, entrepreneurs, and empathetic leaders.
How do you see King’s role in Jordan, and what impact would you like to see from the school in the future?
As a family, you have always generously supported King’s. What compelled you to give over the years?
We are strong believers in giving back to our society, to our world, and we are also instilling these values in our children. Giving to King’s was an easy decision to take. Giving to King’s means giving to a non-profit institution that is transforming the lives of thousands of young people in Jordan and across the world. When we first donated to King’s back in 2019 it was from our own personal funds, and it was centered around responding to specific needs shared and voiced by the management of the school. However, over the years, and through the partnership and
“sTF5 Care” was then born in 2019 as a private philanthropic venture that aims to create positive and permanent system change in disadvantaged communities in the Arab world with a focus on Palestine and Jordan in the areas of education and health. This year, we have five running projects in both Jordan and Palestine, with one of them being the Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at King’s. We are looking forward to expanding our work with new partners to respond efficiently and effectively to the need of our communities while aligning our philanthropic endeavors with national efforts to build a better world.
You were the first donors to support the entrepreneurship program at King’s. Why entrepreneurship?
Living in a challenging and complex environment such as that in Jordan requires a new generation of young minds that are equipped with a tremendous set of skills that go beyond education. It requires young adults to create innovative solutions to problems that the Jordanian society is experiencing
daily, whether in education, finance, business or any other sector. And this is exactly what entrepreneurship is all about. It helps people become independent and channel their creativity into creating something of their own and solving real-world problems. It teaches essential life skills that would prepare students for an uncertain future while building their creativity and collaboration skills. In a country like Jordan, this is exactly what is needed from the younger generation, and this is why we have decided to create at King’s the first Chair for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the loving memory of my father Tawfiq Shaker Fakhouri; one of the leading entrepreneurs in the region. A decade ago, entrepreneurship studies were mainly designed for university, but today the earlier we start the more impact we have on the future generation. The Chair delivered a co-curriculum course last year which has helped students build their confidence and skills to start their own venture and prepared them for life’s challenges — whether they choose to become entrepreneurs or not — by nurturing and cultivating their entrepreneurial mindset. We will make sure that the course is delivered to all Grade 11 and 12 students on a yearly basis to maximize our impact.
How does accessibility on campus, entrepreneurship and community service align with sTF5 Care?
The three words you have mentioned “accessibility, entrepreneurship and community” perfectly fit our three pillars. sTF5 Care runs programs that support two specific United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals: Healthcare and Education. It also provides broader institutional support for the Palestinian community.
In fact, through the education pillar, sTF5 Care supports educational initiatives in the region which aim to identify and grow local talent as well as to support underprivileged youth to excel academically and grow into empowered and inspiring leaders of the future. As mentioned in the question just before, the Chair at King’s was sought as a steppingstone to prepare young students to access top universities across the world. Having an entrepreneurial
mind means being equipped with the skills and behaviors needed to successfully lead one’s life.
In addition, our health pillar focuses on supporting the community of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in the Arab world. It does this through two main approaches: by funding research into MS to enable the development of medical solutions and by funding outpatient care to support MS patients with physiotherapy and psychotherapy services. At the early stages of our giving, we supported King’s with accessibility ramps to increase the inclusion of persons with disabilities on campus.
What message would you like to share with other parents and the community on the importance of supporting King’s Academy?
King’s is one of the rare educational institutions in Jordan that is not for profit. Which means that our contribution and those of other parents have a direct impact on the lives of King’s students, and this is remarkable. Besides, King’s is an inclusive institution, it gives access to underprivileged students who are unable to continue their studies by providing financial aid and scholarships to more than 50% of its students. This is a very bold and courageous mission, especially in times where Jordan is facing a social and economic crisis. Giving to King’s is being part of the mission of preparing students for future roles as leaders and investing in those young people to promote peace and prosperity for Jordan, the region and the world.
What impact has King’s Academy had on your children?
Both our children, Jafar and Nemat, have become responsible, serious and organized individuals. They have been able to better voice their needs in an ethical and respectful manner. They have learned through the past years to care about others who have less fortunate lives and to support them by volunteering and become active and engaged citizens. We have witnessed the transformation of our children who have become global citizens, well rounded and resilient. And we are forever grateful to King’s.

ENDOWED FUNDS
“King’s mission is not just to prepare young men and women to succeed in life, but to develop and empower young leaders who will drive change within and beyond their communities, and eventually across borders.”
-- Abdullah II bin Al Hussein
Why Endowment?
An endowed fund, established in perpetuity, is a permanent fund that earns an annual interest. The earned income is used for purposes that align with the mission of King’s Academy and as specified by the donor. Endowments are used to secure the future and growth of nonprofit schools and institutions like King’s Academy. Endowments provide both long-term support for our growth and financial sustainability that allow us to consistently support our students and programs.
Our school’s current endowment size is US$12M Our aim is to significantly grow our small endowment to ensure the financial sustainability of the school, especially in these days of uncertainty.
Ways to Give to Endowed Funds at King’s Academy
Endowed Scholarship Fund
With 50% of our students receiving financial aid, we rely on Endowed Funds to steadily support the education of students at King’s through these perpetual funds. These permanent funds — that live as long as King’s exists — provide a sustainable and steady funding for our students. As per our gift policy, the yearly spendable amount of the endowment funds is around 4%.
Ex: An endowed scholarship of $100,000 will generate a yearly income of $4,000 and ensures that every year, the tuition of a financially challenged student will be supported.
By providing a world-class educational experience for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds,
King’s Academy is investing in the future of the community and the region as a whole. The school’s founders and early advocates saw the Academy as a crucial step in building the capacity for economic and social opportunities in the Middle East as well as working toward a future of peace. It is only when young men and women from across the region and beyond — leaders in the decades to come — have the opportunity to learn and live together during their formative years will mutual respect and understanding flourish.
Unrestricted Endowed Fund
The King’s Academy endowment has significant room to grow. We aim to rely on endowment income to provide financial sustainability to the school for the many years to come. Building our endowment, both through designated funds and unrestricted capital, is a crucial next step for the school’s continued achievement and growth. The return from the unrestricted endowed fund will be used wherever the need is greatest
Academic and Departmental Programs
In order to attract the best students and retain talented faculty members, gifts made to establish a fund for academic departments and student life have an enduring impact on the quality of a King’s Academy education. Endowed funds for academic departments assist with the costs of curriculum development, resource procurement, educational projects, faculty salaries, community service and travel.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Education is a crucial process that can transform lives, advance societies and create a better world. This is why King’s Academy considers scholarships a necessary and life-changing element of our school, as they ensure the diversity of our student body who come from wide ranging socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. As a private preparatory and independent school, King’s relies on fundraising to maintain the highest level of academic excellence and, therefore, attracting the best and the brightest students remains our highest priority. We will continue working hard with our remarkable alumni, parents, trustees and friends to make sure that cost is never an obstacle to preventing a bright student from receiving an excellent education at King’s Academy. This is our responsibility to a new generation and to ourselves.
Through its strong financial aid and scholarship program, King’s Academy currently provides financial support to more than 50% of its student body. This means that over half of our students receive some sort of financial support to pursue their education in an institution that is home to excellent international and local faculty, dedicated staff, and world-class facilities.
Since inception, King’s Academy has granted more than US $100 million to student financial aid and scholarships, making it possible for more than 1,000 students to have access to such a unique educational experience.
