MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES It is an incredible honor to gain the confidence and trust of His Majesty King Abdullah II to serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of King’s Academy as of the latter part of the fiscal year 2020-2021. In these few months, I have had the pleasure of witnessing firsthand the transformative effects that giving can have on King’s Academy. I am humbled to say that, with your generous support, we have raised an inspiring US $5,178,916. This has enabled us to offer each student with a personalized and outstanding educational experience, one that our faculty and staff members are proud to provide. I am also truly in awe of your dedication and generosity that has allowed our financial aid program to continue to grow with our increased enrollment, whereby around 50% of students receive need-based financial aid. This rate is unparalleled within the region, and we owe a great deal of gratitude to you, our loyal donors, who continue to help King’s maintain such advancement. Furthermore, your highly valued support has enabled the launch of many new funds and initiatives that support several creative yet essential opportunities, namely: scholarships, entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership and athletics. I am also immensely grateful for the substantial increase in parent giving and in staff and faculty engagement, not to mention the increased engagement of King’s alumni whose involvement is equally motivational in fostering a sense of community and belonging. To our donors, who made this a year of record fundraising, on behalf of the King’s Academy Board of Trustees, thank you for inspiring us and for joining us in sustaining the vision of His Majesty. We are tremendously grateful for your unwavering support and, most importantly, for the confidence you have placed in us that will certainly pave a path to a brighter future.

Sincerely, Ali H. Kolaghassi Chairman of the Board of Trustees

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear parents, alumni and friends, I am proud to share with you the latest edition of The Lion’s Pride. This annual report recognizes King’s Academy’s extraordinary community of donors and it celebrates all who have strengthened the school with their philanthropy, enabling us to stay true to His Majesty King Abdullah II’s bold mission. Your gifts have made the school what it is today. You have provided access for students from all backgrounds, and you have helped develop the programs and physical infrastructure that have enabled us to provide a world class education that launches students to opportunities around the world. I also write to you at this time with news that our strategic planning process is well underway, thanks to your help. We have begun exploring key priorities for future growth and will soon be deeply engaging the school community for insight and partnership. We will be reaching out to you as parents, alumni, trustees and friends of King’s Academy in the months ahead to engage you in the development of our comprehensive strategic vision for the future. The work of shaping the future will also be marked by a celebration and commemoration of the school’s 15th anniversary. Keep an eye out for more information about this in the months ahead. It is also worth reiterating that from the very beginning, King’s Academy has not only stood firm in giving every student a world class education, but also in providing this next generation of invested citizens and visionary leaders with a learning environment that is multi-dimensional: nurturing yet challenging, historically aware yet future oriented, built around individual development yet committed to shared understanding and experiences. So, on behalf of our students, I salute and thank you for continuing this journey with us. Truly, each one of you who has contributed is making a difference in the educational experiences of our students. We are most grateful for your generosity, and we look forward to seeing your names in future issues of The Lion’s Pride. I am honored and proud to say that the culture of giving is becoming stronger than ever at King’s because of you. With appreciation, Peter Nilsson Head of School

2020-2021 ADVANCEMENT EVENTS SENDING LOVE AND CARE PACKAGES TO STUDENTS FROM THE PARENT COUNCIL OCTOBER 2020

KING’S ACADEMY VIRTUAL CONCERT

DECEMBER 2020 King’s Academy wrapped up the fall semester with a celebration of Arabic music. Students, staff and faculty participated in this virtual concert to bring the King’s community together through music and song.

10

Care packages are a great way for families to show children away at school that they are loved and missed. With that in mind, the King’s Academy Parent Council organized a “Sending Energy and Love” care package drive for the 408 students that were boarding full-time at King’s during the 2020 fall bubble, in collaboration with the school’s Advancement Office and the K.A.R.E. (King’s Academy Resiliency Efforts) team.

In less than 48 hours, the Parent Council mobilized at a location in Amman to collect, sanitize and pack thousands of healthy energy snacks into boxes for each residential cohort. In addition to providing snacks, parents also sent notes of care and encouragement in the packages. After being picked up, sanitized and delivered to school, the boxes were distributed to the dorms where they were excitedly received by the surprised students.

PARENT COUNCIL SENDS CARE PACKAGES TO ONCAMPUS FACULTY AND STAFF MEMBERS MARCH 2021 To keep spirits high and show gratitude to the faculty and staff who ensured the stability and continued growth of students over the past year, the King’s Academy Parent Council prepared “Love and Support” packages for King’s employees. Like the care packages the Parent Council sent to students during the fall Green Zone, these gifts served as a sign of appreciation and support from the King’s Academy community.

THE FIRST KING’S ACADEMY VIRTUAL SILENT AUCTION

APRIL 2021 In April, the Advancement Office launched the first virtual silent auction at King’s Academy. The auction sold six pieces of artwork by King’s alumni and current students. Over the course of one week, bids were cast through an online form that was open to bidders across the globe. By the closing bid, all the artwork was sold with some pieces generating fierce competition. Bidders were located in Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. All proceeds from the auction went to the Student Scholarship Fund, which supports scholarships for King’s students from Jordan and around the world. The auction items consisted of three sculptures, two prints and one piece of embroidery. The artists are alumni and students from the Classes of 2016 through 2022 who prepared the auctioned artwork during their time at King’s.

2020-2021 ALUMNI NEWS AND EVENTS LAUNCHING OUR KING’S ALUMNI PORTALS

In collaboration with the King’s Academy Alumni Association (KAAA), the Advancement Office successfully launched two online alumni platforms in February. These online spaces allow the growing alumni community to stay in touch, create mentoring relationships and access a network of career service experts and employers.

FEBRUARY 2021

The King’s Community allows alumni to engage with one another informally and through an in-built mentoring tool. Users can also create their own professional profiles, message others in the alumni community through the directory and share job opportunities. Localized is a career services portal that connects alumni with industry experts and employers across the MENA region and beyond. The platform also hosts a variety of free webinars with these experts and professionals on a weekly basis.

12

A (VIRTUAL) SITDOWN WITH KHALOOK AL-YASSIN ’12 MARCH 2021 In March 2021, the first-ever Alumni Talk was held on Localized, one of the King’s alumni platforms. King’s alumni had the opportunity to listen Khalook Al-Yassin ’12 talk about his journey of becoming a strategic partner manager at YouTube and ask questions about his experience. Among the myriad of topics, Khalook spoke about the importance of diversifying content on social media platforms, how data is king and the future of content creation in the MENA region.

Alumni-to-alumni connections are invaluable, especially as young alumni navigate the start of their careers. The Alumni Talk series will continue to

provide opportunities for King’s alumni to get a glimpse into various career paths and be inspired to reach even greater heights.

UPDATES FROM THE LION’S DEN

MARCH 2021 As part of an effort to keep alumni connected to King’s after graduation, the Advancement Office launched The Lion’s Den, a weekly alumni newsletter. The purpose of this newsletter is to keep alumni in the loop of campus happenings and relevant updates. Since the launch, the newsletter has featured alumni spotlights, work opportunities promoted by alumni and the journey of the Class of 2021 from students to alumni. Those interested in sharing anything with the wider alumni community or that have any feedback on the newsletter, please send an email to alumni@kingsacademy.edu.jo.

CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN ALUMNI AND ALMOSTALUMNI

APRIL 2021

KING’S BLING – JUST FOR ALUMNI! MAY 2021 Alumni often return to visit campus. But what if alumni could take a piece of King’s with them wherever they go? In May 2021, the Advancement Office introduced personalized class rings and alumni ID cards to ensure alumni continue to feel like a vital part of the King’s community. The class ring, engraved with their year of graduation, will serve as a reminder of their time here and that alumni will always have a home at King’s. When alumni decide to visit campus, their alumni ID will give them access to the facilities they frequented as students. In the future, they will also be used as loyalty cards for services across Jordan including restaurants, shops and malls. Class rings and ID cards will be available to all alumni classes very soon.

14

With college acceptances rolling in, our Class of 2021 seniors had the chance to meet with several King’s alumni back in April and ask all about life after graduation. At the virtual meeting, alumni from around the world tuned in to answer questions and share their personal experiences about transitioning from King’s to university life. One of the alumni panelists, Firas Mouasher ’12, talked about the imposter

syndrome he felt during his freshmen year at university, how critical it is to diversify academic and extra-curricular interests and the importance of asking for help. Having gone through this transition themselves, King’s is grateful to have a wide network of alumni who are always willing to support current students and fellow graduates.

ENDOWMENTS AT KING’S ACADEMY 20

“King’s mission is not just to prepare young men and women to succeed in life, but to develop and empower young leaders who will drive change within and beyond their communities, and eventually across borders.” -- Abdullah II bin Al Hussein

Why Endowment? An endowed fund, established in perpetuity, is a permanent fund that earns an annual interest. The earned income is used for the purpose specified by the donor. Endowments are used to secure the future and growth of nonprofit schools and institutions like King’s Academy. Endowments provide both long-term support for our growth and financial sustainability that allow us to consistently support our students and programs. Our school’s current endowment size is $10M, with a market value of around $10.4M. Our aim is to significantly grow our small endowment to ensure the financial sustainability of the school especially in these days of uncertainty.

Endowed Scholarship Fund With 50% of our students receiving financial aid, we rely on Endowed Funds to steadily support the education of students at King’s through these perpetual funds. These permanent funds – that live as long as King’s exists – provide a sustainable and steady funding for our students. As per our gift policy, the yearly spendable amount of the endowment funds is around 4%. Ex: An endowed scholarship of $100,000 will produce a yearly income of $4,000 and ensures that every year, the tuition of a financially challenged student will be supported. By providing a world-class educational experience for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds, King’s Academy is investing in the future of the community and region as a whole. The school’s founders and early

advocates saw the Academy as a crucial step in building the capacity for economic and social opportunities in the Middle East as well as working toward a future of peace. It is only as young men and women from across the region and beyond – leaders in the decades to come – have the opportunity to learn and live together during their formative years will mutual respect and understanding flourish.

Unrestricted Endowed Fund The King’s Academy endowment has significant room to grow. We aim to rely on endowment income to provide financial sustainability to the school for the many years to come. Building our endowment, both through designated funds and unrestricted capital, is a crucial next step for the school’s continued achievement and growth. The return from the unrestricted endowed fund will be used wherever the need is greatest.

Academic and Departmental Programs In order to attract the best students and retain talented faculty members, gifts made to establish a fund for academic departments and student life have an enduring impact on the quality of a King’s Academy education. Endowed funds for academic departments assist with the costs of curriculum development, resource procurement, educational projects, faculty salaries, community service and travel. • • • • • • • • • •

SOURCES OF GIVING

Scholarships and Financial Aid Education is a crucial process that can transform lives, advance societies and create a better world. This is why King’s Academy considers scholarships a necessary and life-changing element of our school, as they ensure the diversity of our student body who come from wide-ranging socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. As a private and independent school, King’s relies on fundraising to maintain the highest level of academic excellence and, therefore, attracting the best and the brightest students remains our highest priority. We will continue working hard with our remarkable alumni, parents, trustees and friends to make sure that cost is never an obstacle preventing a bright student from receiving an excellent education. This is our responsibility toward the new generation and toward ourselves. Through its strong financial aid and scholarships program, King’s Academy currently provides financial support to more than 50 percent of its student body. This means that over half of our students receive some sort of financial support to pursue their education in an institution that is home to excellent international and local faculty, dedicated staff and world-class facilities.
