BTECs
WHAT IS A BTEC?
BTECs are work-related qualifications suitable for a wide range of pupils
They are built to accommodate the needs of employers and enable progression to university
They provide a practical, real-world approach to learning without sacrificing any of the essential subject theory
They can be taken alongside A Levels (timetable permitting).
WHERE CAN A BTEC TAKE YOU?
BTECs, which have been around for over 30 years, are recognised by universities, employers and professional bodies
They offer natural progression to academic qualifications and university, as well as to potential vocational options. This includes some Russell Group and overseas universities.
BTEC qualifications are developed with key industry representatives and sector skills councils.
Many industry and professional bodies offer exemptions to successful BTEC pupils for their own accredited qualifications.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE
A BTEC AND WHAT LEVELS DO KING’S
OFFER?
King’s pupils starting BTECs in Hospitality, Enterprise and Performing Arts in the Lower Sixth will all study the BTEC National Certificate Level (similar to an AS Level).
Pupils continuing to the Upper Sixth, including those studying BTEC Sport, will complete a BTEC Subsidiary Diploma or Extended Certificate. Both of these are recognised with a significant number of UCAS points, matching those of the A Level qualifications..
HOW IS A BTEC ASSESSED?
To complete each unit, pupils’ work is assessed continually, pulling together the skills, knowledge and understanding. This ongoing assessment allows pupils to analyse and improve their own performance. Teacher assessment is complemented by an external assessment, with units being graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
The BTEC Entreprise and Entrepreneurship course also includes two examinations, one at the end of the Lower Sixth and one at the end of the Upper Sixth.
