Hospitality (BTEC
EXAMINATION BOARD: EDEXCEL
The BTEC Hospitality course gives learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of, and skills in, the hospitality industry. Pupils also gain transferable business skills and a qualification that supports progression to higher education through UCAS points. All units are portfolio based and there is no final written examination, although work will be externally verified by an examiner. The course is a mix of practical learning and theory, no prior knowledge or experience are required. The Hospitality team will regularly open their bespoke Bistro to invited guests, and plan and assist with a wide selection of events at King’s. This experience enhances their food production, customer service and communication skills, whilst also developing their confidence. Pupils will have opportunities to see the hospitality industry in action, with recent trips including a visit to see behind the scenes at The Dorchester.
FURTHER STUDY/CAREERS:
King’s BTEC Hospitality pupils have successfully completed degree courses in a wide range of subjects including Hospitality, Business Studies, Events Management, Culinary Arts, International Hospitality (both in the UK and overseas) as well as confidently entering the work place.
COURSE CONTENT
Students will complete 3 compulsory units: • The Hospitality Industry (10 credits) • Principles of supervising customer service (2 credits) • Providing customer service (8 credits) The additional units will be taken from: • Food and Drink Service • Alcoholic Beverage Service • European Food • Asian Food • Contemporary World Food • Planning and Managing an Event • Personal and Professional Development
ASSESSMENT:
The BTEC is assessed by 100% coursework. As there is no final examination, pupils will build an assessed portfolio of work. The format of the portfolio will include: research, detailed evaluations of all activities completed both food preparation and customer service, presentations, reports, photographs and video footage.
