A word from The Headmaster This has been a very successful term and I am delighted that our overseas pupils are fully involved in the life of the School. The 1st XV rugby team had an unbeaten season which is the first time this has happened in the history of the School and Benson Hung was a key member of the squad. Alexander Artemenko and Yan Le have also played important roles in a very important 2nd XV and they will undoubtedly be playing 1st XV next year. This rugby success has been matched by some outstanding Hockey with our German pupils excelling. Julia Kilimann, Anna von Keller and Anna-Lotte Baltes have all played key roles in the U16 Indoor and Outdoor Hockey squads. King’s is West of England Champion at U16 Indoor and Outdoor Hockey and has therefore qualified for the National

Finals next term, whilst Julian Bloechle has been an excellent goal keeper and Max Behm has played in outfield for the Indoor Boys’ Hockey squad who are County Champions and have qualified for the National Finals. It has also been a successful term for King’s drama as the whole School musical, “Oliver!” performed to packed houses at the end of term. Alen Safaryan was outstanding playing the role of Bill Sykes to much acclaim. Anna Thomas and Luisa Bongaerts joined us from Germany and have fitted quickly into our Choirs whilst Tobias Wegel composed and performed his own jazz number at the Winter Concert. Highlights for the choirs include singing at Gloucester Cathedral and Messiah at The Royal Albert Hall. Next term sees the choir at Winchester Cathedral. The School is now preparing for its 500th anniversary in 2019 and the Governors have decided to build a new

Music School in the centre of the School campus to mark this special anniversary. This state of the art facility will provide a wonderful setting for our musicians and we plan to open it with a Royal visit in the Easter term of 2019. Work is ongoing at the moment to increase the capacity for girls in Arion House so that by September 2016 we will have all the girls’ houses the same size. Mrs Maistrello and Ms Checketts continue to support all our EAL pupils, not only with their academic and conversational English, but also with an extra layer of pastoral support. All our EAL pupils leave King’s with the highest possible English qualification and I am very grateful to the EAL department for their expert guidance. I wish all the EAL pupils a relaxing Christmas and New Year and I hope their journeys home at the end of term go smoothly. Ian Wilmshurst

‘Remember… the Force will be with you, always.’ – Obi-Wan Kenobi The Force has been strong in our international pupils this term. There could be several reasons: an outstanding hockey season for both indoor and outdoor girls’ teams with superb contributions from Anna B, Anna V-K and Julia. Or maybe Alen’s breathe taking villain as Bill Sykes in the school production of Oliver! Or even the magical Snow Ball hosted by Lyon and Priory houses for our junior pupils, as the photographs show. Or possibly the page 2
Peter, George and Sam musical contribution to the choirs from Tobias, Anna T and Luisa. It could even be the new B.E.V.E Course for Sixth Form, (Business, Economics Vocabulary Expansion) although those with an intimate knowledge of English will know the other meaning of bevy. The list goes on. Here in the EAL department we feel we know the real reason and you need look no further than the articles written by some of the Third Form Cambridge First Certificate pupils Ibuki, Rocio and Jan Thomas. Using one of Yoda’s most famous quotes the pupils all seemed to write articles about the fear of coming to England to school and yet how important it is to overcome these worries, just have a go and everything will be alright. As Yoda
Mrs Maistrello courtesy of Yi also said, ‘Fear is the path to the dark side.’ Ms Checketts and I wish all our EAL pupils a very Merry Christmas and yes, I’m going to see Star Wars as soon as it comes out! Mrs Maistrello www.kingsbruton.com
Yoda’s Top Quotes Article Writing Practice By Third Form First Certificate Class
“Do. Not do. There is no try.” I’m from Japan and I had a personal experience when I was 11 years old. I came to England when I had no English whatsoever but I gave it a try, used my dictionary everyday finding out the words using translation every lesson. In my opinion I think you should give everything a try. If I didn’t understand some words or the subjects in the lessons I used a dictionary and asked the teachers for help. I’ve also experienced arguments: when you start fighting about something. I’ve stopped the arguing and stay away from people who like arguing. I’ve grown up and am more sensitive and mature. And I’m quite happy that I’ve improved my English and I don’t have to ask my friends to help me with words. Two years later right now I can speak English but I still can’t speak perfectly and I’m still stuck with wordy sentences, grammar and so on. But I tried and didn’t give up. Ibuki, Blackford. “Do. Not do. There is no try.” Going to a different country, without your family, in a different language and you arrive. How would you feel? This happened to me, it’s a real story. When I arrived here in England and I went to my school I tried to make friends but it was so difficult because I was so sad and everyone spoke so fast. I couldn’t speak, it was difficult but I kept going and I made some good friends. They helped me when I had some problems or they listened to me even if they didn’t understand what I was talking about. But obviously I still have problems, but little by little they are becoming smaller. If you are in a similar situation don’t worry; everything is going to get better, www.kingsbruton.com
just keep going and your friends will help you. And if there’s anyone who makes your life difficult don’t be upset; trust me, this happened to me but I know it is going to be better. Just forget him or her and make new friends and don’t worry if they are in another year. Everyone can help you. And remember that you can also talk with your teachers and parents. They are always there for you. So, if you go to a different country: go and as Yoda said; ‘Do. Not Do. There is no try.’ Rocio, Arion. “Do. Not do. There is no try.” Have you ever thought about the meaning of this sentence? I’m from Spain and I’m 12 years old. My paretns wanted me to learn English so they sent me to King’s. The first thing I thought was: ‘ I can’t do it, I will be homesick every day,’ but I didn’t have a choice. When I was on the plane going to where my next school will be I was scared about what could happen because it’s another language, other people and no friends. I was terrified about what could happen. But when I arrived here everyone was very friendly and funny. Although I have to say that they were strange. But I started making new friends although I didn’t know how to speak proper English. The conclusion about what I think the sentence, ‘Do. Not do. There is no try’ means is that there is no try; it’s about if you are trying to do something new that you are not sure about what will happen, you just have to do it and face the consequences rather than if you do nothing and just lie in bed without trying. Jan Thomas, Old.
