FORCES FAMILIES We Understand Forces Families Nick Bunday has been a History teacher and sports coach at King's for the past 11 years. He is currently Housemaster of Blackford House and acts as our Forces Liaison. Prior to coming to King's he spent 23 years in the Army. Commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot) in 1986, he had the usual raft of regimental and staff appointments including five tours in Germany and residential tours in Northern Ireland and Hong Kong and the accompanying operational tours. Nick and his wife Gilly, the School’s Registrar, chose King's for their sons whilst serving abroad and never regretted their choice. Both sons thrived and are now enjoying busy careers whilst maintaining strong friendships with those they met whilst at King's. Nick acts as a focus for Forces’ families, ensuring that the School understands the specific requirements of our various Forces families and their children, and the pressure that comes with Service life both in the UK and abroad.

Forces Discounts With ex-Service men in teaching and support roles, as well as at Senior Management level and on the Board of Governors, King's has a deep understanding of the unique circumstances associated with military life. The School works hard to ensure our provision remains affordable for Service families whilst ensuring the best levels of education and care. A Forces Discount of 15% is currently available for all Forces families irrespective of whether they are in receipt of CEA. With a Bursar who spent 25 years in the Army, many of them as a CEA claimant, there is an intimate knowledge of the CEA system and understanding of the process. The emphasis is on flexibility and recognising the unique circumstances of every family.

COMBINED CADET FORCE King's Bruton Combined Cadet Force offers pupils the opportunity to learn military skills, develop initiative, self-reliance, endurance, resourcefulness, responsibility, and leadership. Our Royal Navy and Army sections aim to engender a sense of public service. Membership of the CCF is voluntary with pupils joining from the 4th Form. We also run a 3rd Form CCF activity which proves to be very popular. The Contingent is directed and managed by the Contingent Commander, Major Barrow, who oversees a dedicated team consisting of teaching staff who have been commissioned into the Forces with officer status and trained specifically to serve the cadet force. Throughout the year, extra activities including Field Days, incorporate patrolling and session attacks, map reading, first aid, command tasks, high ropes and leadership, air rifle range shooting, archery, rock climbing, sea kayaking and sailing. Cadets are also offered the chance to take part in Ten Tors, adventurous training visits to regular units and summer camps.
