E SPRING 2012 THEATRECARD HOTLINE 0844 871 7633 www.atgtickets.com/theatrecard
BEHIND THE SCENES Our Head Stage Door Keeper Joan Neil has worked at the King’s Theatre for 37 years and is often the first person both the public and the visiting company meet when they arrive at the King’s.
Joan Neil meets David Tennant
What roles do you hold at the theatres and what do they involve? I am Head Stage Door Keeper for the King’s and Theatre Royal and I also work Front of House three nights a week. At Stage Door my duties include operating the telephone switchboard, handling the mail, securing the venue and initiating emergency procedures, as well as offering a first class service for visiting companies and members of the public. Additionally I sell programmes and ice cream, and usher patrons to their seats when working Front of House. What do you like most about working here? I like meeting different types of people both at Stage Door and when working FOH, and I love the buzz when the theatre is busy. What’s the best show you’ve ever seen? It’s difficult to pick one as there has been so many, but I would say Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and Miss Saigon.

Do you have favourite performers and have there been any surprises when you have met someone you admired? My favourite performers have to be the late Gerard Kelly, Barbara Rafferty and all the Scottish actors; when they come in to the theatre it’s like meeting up with family you haven’t seen for a long time. I was surprised to discover recently that Tony Roper is also an accomplished artist and I have the evidence to prove it hanging at stage door. Do you have a favourite story from backstage? A few years ago during the panto run there was due to be a lunar eclipse. Most of the panto cast (in costume!) went out into the back lane to watch it. I wish I’d had my camera with me as it was a very funny sight! Which forthcoming shows are you looking forward to? I am looking forward to Sister Act and Blood Brothers returning.
