Hayley Br ay (OK 1995), Photogr apher Hayley Bray is a full time professional photographer based in Surrey. She runs a photography business with her husband Will, covering a range of commissions, from weddings, parties and events to corporate and commercial assignments in and around London and the South East as well as internationally. After school and A Levels including Business and Photography, Hayley decided she wanted to be a photographer and got a full time job in good oldfashioned printing and processing with a local photography business. Working in the darkroom with enlargers and chemicals proved invaluable in learning the use of light and honing the craft of image making. Assisting and printing the work of top photographers gave a wealth of experience in understanding the difference between a good image and a great image, and was a natural stepping stone to becoming a photographer. By 1997, at the age of twenty, Hayley was running a studio for the then President of the British Institute of Professional Photography and after two years decided to go freelance and form her own company, primarily shooting weddings and portraits. Since then, Hayley has photographed over five hundred weddings, many wellknown faces and numerous prestigious events and has a growing portfolio of commercial clients, having been commissioned by Ferrari, Berkeley Homes, Royal Historic Palaces, GlaxoSmith Kline, SWAG and KGS. www.hayleybray.com
SAM
Sam Ainsworth (OK 2010), Freelance writer and director, La Paz Films After attending KGS, Sam first studied Archaeology and History at the University of Southampton. After graduating he travelled to South America, working with endangered iguanas and with orphaned children. Returning to London, he was accepted into the Met Film School, completing his Masters in November 2015. His graduation film, Cabrรณn, has been screened at over twenty festivals and won an award at the National Student Film Festival. Sam is founder of L Paz Films and now works as a freelance writer and director in commercials. His clients include Nike, Stonewall and Shell. Sophie Dunster (OK 2010) Sophie is an up-and-coming fashion designer with a focus on sustainable and ethical design. She believes that we should not only wear what we love, but what we believe in. That is the idea behind her brand Gung Ho, whose prints take inspiration from an important issue, like the British bee crisis. Gung Ho prints on 100% organic material and its garments are hand-made in London. Each purchase comes with a mini zine packed full of information about that cause, and it makes a donation to charities like Friends of the Earth who work closely with the issue. Through her design, Sophie aims to connect people with important issues in a new and engaging way. Sophie left KGS in 2010 and went on to complete an Art Foundation at City College Brighton before graduating from Edinburgh College of Art with a First Class Honours Degree in Printed Textiles. From there Sophie was headhunted by the eco-luxe lifestyle brand Montesogno, where she worked as the Creative Director. After two years of developing high-end design, Sophie decided to go freelance and pursue her own ambition of running Gung Ho. www.gung-ho-design.com
Tuomas Pirinen (OK 1999), Associate architect Tuomas completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Design at the University of Bath in 2003, followed by a Masters in Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL in 2006. He completed his final professional studies at the Architectural Association in London and qualified as a Chartered Architect in 2012. During his studies, Tuomas gained professional project experience in a variety of scales and sectors including aviation (Pascall + Watson Architects), residential (PRP Architects) and cultural (Wilkinson Eyre Architects). Having found his preferred niche in bespoke design and architecture at Ron Arad Architects in 2007, today Tuomas is an Associate Architect of the practice, running UK and international projects in a variety of sectors, the most recent example being the renovation of the infamous Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC. www.ronarad.co.uk
Myles Taylor (OK 1993), Architect Myles Taylor graduated from Canterbury School of Architecture in 1996 and then again with a Diploma in architecture in 2000. He then completed his architectural professional qualifications at Westminster University in 2002. Throughout his studies, he worked for Canterburybased Lee-Evans de Moubray Architects as well as South American based Banquero Arquitectos on a variety of projects from feasibility through to completion. Since joining Squire and Partners in 2000, Myles has worked on a number of projects including offices, residential, retail, churches and hotels. He was responsible for the delivery of the 5-star Bulgari Hotel and Residences in Knightsbridge - featuring 85 rooms and suites along with a limited number of luxury apartments and amenities including a restaurant and bar, spa, and business centre. The hotel was completed in 2012 and has since won a number of awards. Myles was made a Director in 2013 and was responsible for the Shell Centre project – a mixed use master planning scheme based in one of London’s most iconic cultural locations. He is currently working on Landmark Pinnacle - a mixed use 75 storey tower project on the Isle of Dogs, the new Shell Headquarters building, the delivery of 173 affordable homes to the south of the Isle of Dogs and a residential building within the new King’s Cross masterplan in conjunction with Conran + Partners. www.squireandpartners.com
K ay Lung-Kendall (OK 1999), Landscape Architect Kay has worked in the construction industry since 2002 on a wide range of landscape projects. As a chartered landscape architect with a background in Architecture, she is mostly interested in the inter-relationship between buildings and the landscape, and how the landscape beyond continues to evolve. Kay enjoys working in a team and with other disciplines, working to resolve issues to make a difference to the environment. In particular, she is keen to explore environmental opportunities and investigate what can be done to improve the sustainability of each project. www.fabrikuk.com
Jonathan Kenworthy (OK 1959), Sculptor Born in the Lake District in 1943, Jonathan began modelling in Plasticine aged four. At eleven, along with his studies at Kingston Grammar School, he was invited to study part time at the Royal College of Art under John Skeaping, Professor of Sculpture. He went on to become a student at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1965 he became the youngest ever winner of the Royal Academy Gold Medal, also winning Landseer Travelling Scholarships, four silver medals and other awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award from Montreal. Jonathan studied anatomy at the Royal Veterinary College and, later, at the Department of Comparative Anatomy at University College Nairobi. The first of his extensive annual journeys to Africa was in 1965 and was followed in time by travels in India, Nepal and Afghanistan. Most of his exhibitions have been in London and New York, but he has also shown his work in Johannesburg, Nairobi and Paris. www.jonathankenworthy.com
Tudor Morris (OK 2010), Freelance Concept Artist Tudor took a Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration at UWE Bristol, and then a Master’s Degree in Game Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire. He started out as a graphic designer for Fast Signs Kingston, working on a combination of logo designs, leaflets, business cards, PVC banners, outdoor flags, conference stands and even full vehicle vinyl wrap designs. He now works on a huge variety of projects for various indie gaming companies, kickstarter projects, charities and much, much more. Tudor does not believe that there is such a thing as ‘talent’, only hard work, and has developed his skills as an artist over tens of thousands of hours of drawing and studying. He recognises the need for constant improvement, as you can never be good enough! Anya Wheatley (OK 1991), fashion buyer and importer Anya left KGS at 16 to go to Richmond College. It was fun but yielded no qualifications. After a few years she came to the realisation that she had no natural star quality, so needed to go back to school! Four years later she had a BA in Fashion Management - basically a business degree geared towards the fashion industry. Her career began selling vintage jewellery to Jigsaw and she then went about finding jewellery manufacturers around the world and began her business properly. Anya launched her jewellery at Jigsaw, Reiss, and ASOS and went on to supply almost everyone on the UK high street; at one time her company was the largest UK supplier to Accessorize. After a few years Anya diversified into men’s jewellery, bags and belts. Anya now undertakes a number of roles, in varied, loosely related fields. She imports and sells antique rugs from Morocco and antique African items, and she works with two friends, one on a fashion label, one building a new brand off the back of a very successful 20-year-old record label. Anya also works with a retail consultant, accompanying clients around London, providing a history of the areas, demonstrating how brilliantly we do retail in our capital city.
Lee Campbell Lee Campbell, Local Artist “My choice of colours is influenced by the snow fed lakes and rivers of New Zealand, where I spent my childhood. However, the vibrant turquoise blues of the Pacific Ocean and the golden slopes of the South Island are now infused with the haunting mists of the Thames, where I am currently based. “I enjoy working in unusual locations and previous residencies have included King’s School in Canterbury, NPL in Teddington, UKC Space Research Lab., and Grosvenor Dock in Pimlico. In 2011 I was commissioned by Byrne Bros. to produce a series of work for their head office based on their re-fit of the historic Savoy Hotel and the ultra-modern, cloud-piercing Shard. In 2012 I worked on location at The Royal Ballet School at their Richmond Park site, White Lodge. Most recently I was employed by ABP as Resident Artist at the Port of Southampton. “I have been painting and showing my work nationally and internationally for over 20 years and work predominately in oil on canvas. I am also a qualified art teacher who has run painting workshops for Tate Britain and the Heatherley School of Art and I currently teach short courses for Kingston University and privately in my studio on Eel Pie Island.” KGS is proud to host an exhibition of Lee’s artwork in the Baxter Gallery. Forbes Low (OK 1984), Gr aphic Designer After completing his A levels, Forbes went to Kingston College to do a Graphic Design Foundation course (1 year). He then attended the London College of Printing for a three-year course, earning a BA Hons in Graphic Design. Forbes set up Forbes Design Associates in 1998 after working in the design sector for over 10 years, first at an international marketing and PR company before rising to manage the office of a mediumsized design company based in London and Bahrain. Forbes Design Associates’ work ranges from branding and logo design to annual reports, brochures, newsletters and digital marketing. The company has worked with a broad range of clients, including Middle East banks, homeless charities, medical and technology companies and leading trade associations, such as the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Chartered Institute of Building. www.forbesdesign.co.uk
Sophia Christie (OK 2005), Teacher and Artist After completing a Law Degree at Bristol University, Sophia completed two wonderful paintings for Kingston Grammar School that can today be found hanging in the School. This reignited her passion for the subject and gave her the confidence to pursue it as a career. Sophia gained a PGCE in Art and Design at Roehampton University and went on to teach at KGS in 2010. She writes, “I thoroughly enjoy teaching Art; every day is different and it is exciting to see young artists develop their skills and become more confident over time.� She is currently studying for a Masters in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, allowing her to spend more time making and exhibiting her own artwork around London. firechristie.wixsite.com/sophiachristieart
Contributed to the exhibition but could not be with us: Alister Thorpe (current parent), Photogr apher School: Sir William Borlase grammar School, Marlow 1976 – 81. After leaving school in 1981, Alister worked at the Quadrugraphics art gallery from 198284. From 1985-87 he was Photographic Assistant to still-life
photographer John Stewart and from 1987-91 a freelance photographic assistant for a variety of photographers in a number of different genres (including fashion, food, portraiture, automotive). His first major commissions came in 1991 shooting food book and business portraits, and his work grew from there. In 2000 his specialisation in automotive photography began with a shoot for Top Gear Magazine, and in 2003 he began to shoot brochures for motor manufacturers, and he has continued since then to work mainly in that sector. Recent clients include Land Rover, Hyundai, Jaguar, Aston Martin, Volvo, Nio and Infiniti, as well as The Guardian, the British Army and British Airways. www.alisterthorpe.com
Alistair Turner (OK 2000), Set Designer Alistair trained as a theatre designer at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has now worked in the industry for nearly fifteen years. His designs, some of which can be seen in this exhibition, include Collidoscope (Birmingham REP), Little Me (Royal Academy of Music), Beast (White Bear Theatre), Airswimming (Istanbul International Theatre Festival), The 24 Hour Plays Celebrity Gala (Old Vic) and Blackout (Soho Theatre), to name a few. Alistair also worked as Associate Designer to Robert Jones in City of Angels, Taken at Midnight, Fatal Attraction, The Full Monty, Much Ado About Nothing, Norma, Die Fledermaus (MET), Andrea Chenier (ROH) and Don Giovanni (Opera Australia).
More recently Alistair has also become a linocut relief printmaker. His work on set design includes the construction of detailed scale models, working on intricate projects with a scalpel. These skills led him to revisit linocut relief printmaking, a medium he enjoyed at school. Alister is mostly self-taught but attended a short course at London’s Art Academy. Alongside his linocut printmaking he is currently working on the set design for Madame Rubinstein (ParkTheatre) which opens on the 26th April. altprint.squarespace.com
