WHAT WILL I LEARN? The course aims to encourage candidates to develop: • an understanding and response to a wide range of play texts, an appreciation of the ways in which playwrights achieve their effects and the ability to communicate the author’s intentions to an audience; • an awareness of social, historical and cultural contexts and influences through an investigation of plays and other styles of dramatic presentation; • increased self and group awareness and the ability to appreciate and evaluate the work of others; • skills of creativity, self-confidence, concentration, self-discipline and communication.

WHICH SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE MUST I HAVE BEFORE EMBARKING ON THIS COURSE? Pupils who are considering taking Drama as an option at GCSE must have a genuine interest in making (exploring, devising, shaping and interpreting), performing (presenting and producing) and responding to (evaluating and applying knowledge and understanding) drama. In order to take Drama GCSE students must have taken the subject during Year 9.

HOW IS THE WHOLE COURSE STRUCTURED? The subject content for GCSE Drama is divided into three components: 1. Understanding drama (written exam) 2. Devising drama (practical and coursework portfolio) 3. Texts in practice (practical) In the practical components pupils may specialise in performing, lighting, sound, set, costume and / or puppets. Whilst there is a fundamental emphasis
