WELCOME FROM HEADS OF MIDDLE SCHOOL
Our Middle School team is led by Mrs Sarah Herlinger and Mrs Laura Smyth.
We look forward to welcoming you to Kingswood School. During your years in Middle School (from Year 9 to Year 11), we will support your academic and pastoral development through these important years.
MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARS
Joining Senior Houses allows Year 9 pupils to build relationships across different year groups through weekly House gatherings and termly social events, as well as close friendships with the peers in their own year group.
Year 9 pupils begin to choose parts of their curriculum for the first time, such as creative subjects and Global Goals, while co-curricular activities remain vibrant. Pupils engage in three activities weekly, plus sports practice and weekend fixtures.
A pupil’s time in the Middle School (Years 9-11) is one of great change. While their social development is closely supported by our tutors, house parents and heads of school during this busy time in their lives, pupils will also begin their preparation for GCSEs.

Co-Head of Middle School
In Year 9, pupils exercise more choice over their curriculum, narrowing their options as they approach GCSE study. By the time they start Year 10, pupils will have chosen their GCSE options and will begin two years’ worth of study towards nine or ten GCSE qualifications.
In addition, our Year 9s enjoy the benefits of our extensive co-curricular programme, from theatrical extravaganzas, beginning Bronze Duke of Edinburgh, joining the Kingswood Jazz Orchestra or designing award winning F1 models in the F1 in Schools club.
The breadth and depth of this experience serves to support children in learning as much outside the classroom as within it, influencing their character development and helping to inform their impressive personal qualities.
BOARDING AT KINGSWOOD SCHOOL
As Head of Boarding at Kingswood School, I can say without a doubt that Kingswood is a home from home for our boarders. With nearly 200 boarders, the community is welcoming, inclusive and at the heart of the Kingswood experience. Please do visit us to find out more.
BOARDING LIFE
DARRELL HARDING Head of Boarding
Each house has a resident House Parent, Assistant House Parent and a team of tutors who will support pupils’ pastoral, academic and co-curricular development. The community in each house is vibrant, busy and cosy, providing a home from home for our boarders. At weekends, the School site remains busy with sports fixtures, house events such as House Music, summer barbecues and a huge array of trips from white water rafting, to watching Bath rugby, cinema to amusement parks.
“The best thing about being a boarder at Kingswood is getting to be with my friends all the time. Kingswood gives you a really safe and supportive environment and I love all the activities I can choose during the week and at weekends too!”
JOINING KINGSWOOD IN YEAR 9:
EARLY ASSESSMENT PROCESS
Each year we welcome around 25 new pupils into Year 9. For those seeking a full, weekly or flexi boarding place, the assessment process can be undertaken in Year 7.
These pupils will be assessed for offers of a place in the Spring term of Year 7, with offers made by the end of the Spring term. Pupils will complete papers in English, Maths and Non Verbal Reasoning. They will be invited to join an interview with a member of the Senior Management Team and enjoy taster sessions with their prospective year group. Taster boarding nights will also be available.
Pupils who have accepted a place in Year 9 and wish to be considered for an Academic scholarship, or Special Talent Award in Art, Design and Technology, Drama, Music or Sport, will be invited to assessment in February of Year 8.
