Welcome to Summerhill

I am very much looking forward to welcoming you all in September, especially the new students in Year 9, 10 and 12 coming into Summerhill. Mr Lopez and I feel very privileged to have the role of House Parents of Summerhill.

I have taught English at Kingswood since Feb 2019. I have been part of the safeguarding team for the last academic year and also teach PSCHE. Previous to teaching at Kingswood, I have taught at a range of schools including international in Kenya and Spain, state and private, often with pastoral responsibilities.

Mr Lopez is currently Head of Computer Science in St. Mary’s School, Calne. We have been house parents together at St. Andrew’s School, Turi (Kenya) and worked together at various other schools. He is very excited to join me in our house parenting of the boarders and will be involved particularly at weekends. We have four children. The older two, Seb and Ruben, will be away at university for the majority of the year. Our daughters, Alicia (15) and Poppy (13) are at different schools but are looking forward to getting to know the boarders at weekends.

My husband and I have always loved working with young people and especially being alongside teenagers through the ups and downs, adventures, challenges and opportunities of life. We know how fun it can be as well as being aware of the demands that can come about during this phase of life.

In Summerhill this year there are 93 pupils in total, of which 46 are boarders. The House aims to be a place which has a secure, supportive and friendly environment, in which the students can flourish. It also aims to encourage values such as kindness, honesty, integrity and courage as well as fostering a sense of personal responsibility and a willingness to support and serve others.

Contacting the Senior Houseparent

Please feel free to contact me any time between 7.45am and 10.30pm on the House Duty mobile, House office phone or via email. If you have an urgent message for me, during the day, please contact the School Office. There will always be a member of staff in the House between 4.30pm and 5.30pm and again between 8.30pm and 10.30pm, who will be able to take a message if I am not available and they will have the duty House phone on them from 4.30pm until 10.30pm. Resident duty staff have the House mobile with them overnight, in case of emergencies. The best time to ring your child is between prep and bedtime. We would really appreciate no later than this as it can disturb other roommates.

If there are any issues that arise on academic or extra - curricular matters, then in the first instance, please contact the tutor directly. Please do not hesitate to contact me over anything with regard to your child. I would far rather deal with things as they occur and not let them develop into bigger issues. I would also love to hear about successes your child has outside of School.

Absence from School / Leaving the Campus

If your child is going to be absent from school, please email myself and your child’s tutor. If your child is absent due to unplanned reasons (illness, last minute medical appointments or for any other circumstances on the day), then again please email the tutor, Houseparent and registration@kingswood.bath.sch.uk If the absence is planned please can you send an email prior to the day of absence. In all cases of absence, an email is required. The school is required by law to keep detailed and accurate registers and documentary evidence is required from parents to cover every period of absence.

If your child is ill and needs to go home, they must only do this through the Medical Centre and not phone parents directly to collect them. The Medical centre will ring and inform you and will also let us know if your child has had to go home.

When leaving campus for authorised reasons during the day, your child must sign out at the Main School Office and back in at the School Office, if they return before the end of the school day.

Tutors

There is a strong pastoral system at Kingswood and your child, whether day or boarding, will be allocated a personal tutor who guides and advises them on academic work, personal development and also acts as a listening ear. Tutees meet their tutors daily from 8.25am – 9.00am. During these allocated times there are House assemblies, the Whole School service, Whole School Assemblies and discussion based tutorials. As well as this, your child will also have individual tutorials. If there are any issues that arise on academic or extra - curricular matters, then in the first instance, please contact the tutor directly.

Senior Houseparent and Assistant House Staff

From 4.30pm each week day, there is a member of staff on duty in Summerhill. From this time, they supervise the students in the House, cover prep and are responsible for all the boarders in the evening. There is always a member of staff on duty 24 hours a day, in case of emergencies. At weekends, the boarders are in the care of the Senior Houseparent and /or the resident House staff. The resident duty staff are Mrs Lopez and Miss Hay, with Miss Bond and Mrs Chua doing duties in the week.

Additional Support for Pupils

There are a range of services at Kingswood designed to offer students support. Their tutor and Houseparent are the initial points of support, but a student can communicate with any member of staff they feel comfortable speaking with. This could also include speaking with the Deputy Head Pastoral/Designated Safeguard Lead or any of the other Deputy Designated Safeguard Leads. The additional support systems in place include the School Counsellor, the Medical Centre and independent listeners such as Off the Record, Childline, Frank, the Riverside Clinic and the Office of the Children's Commissioner. The contact details for these services are displayed in the school and on the boarding house notice boards. If a student is feeling unwell during the school day or is struggling and feeling unable to go to a lesson, they should go to the Medical centre where they will receive a warm welcome and pastoral care as well as medical attention as required.

Housekeepers

The housekeepers are an integral part of the House staff team, in terms of the day to day running of the House and being there for the boarders to help with domestic issues. Boarders that are new into the House in September, will get to meet them on the first day back and they will inform them of the general routines, such as when the laundry days are and where to put their washing. The students are able to speak to the Housekeepers at Quarter and lunchtimes, if they need to.

5

Role of Prefects

House prefects are an essential part of the smooth running of the House. They work in conjunction with Mrs Lopez and as well as assisting House staff when on evening duty, they also help organise House events such as Inter-House competitions and House entertainment. They also have an important pastoral role in the House too. I very much encourage all the Upper Sixth to apply to be a House Prefect, so it allows them to further their leadership skills within the context of the House.

The House Prefects are crucial in setting the right tone and engendering the ethos of the House. The House Prefect Team is managed by the Head of House and assisted by the Deputy Head of House. These positions will be given out in September. Meanwhile, the list of positions awarded at the end of last term are as follows:

Head of House: Connie S

Deputy Head of House: Zara K

Head Girl: Sophie F

Head of Boarding: Rachel B (Summerhill), Christine L (School)

Senior Prefects: Grace A, Polly F, Dasha G, Annie M, Bea M, Charlotte N, Ishika P, Sienna W

The Role of a House Prefect is:

• A House prefect is expected to set a good example in terms of conduct and dress, and by their leadership, contribute to the well-being of the House.

• The prefects assist the Housestaff, particularly on their duty day, to maintain an orderly and calm atmosphere in the House.

• Prefects report any misbehaviour, or concerns about individuals, to the Head of House and/or Houseparent as appropriate.

• Prefects assists in the planning and running of House events, and supports these events.

• During the evening, the prefect is responsible for aiding in the supervision of prep and helps the boarders with the evening routine.

House Routines

Registrations/Signing Out –For Boarders and Day Pupils

Registration takes place on a House basis at Kingswood and your help in ensuring that your daughter arrives on time for the morning registration is much appreciated.

8.25am

All Year groups register with their tutors in the Sixth Form Dining room.

During Quarter, lunch time and after lessons, if pupils go to the House, boarders need to ‘sign in and out’ using Boardingware on the iPad and day pupils must ‘sign in and out’ in the book at the entrance of the House.

PUPILS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE HOUSE DURING LESSONS.

Prep – For Boarders and Day Pupils

Year 9 6.30pm – 8.00pm

Years 10-13 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Pupils get registered at the start of prep in the IT Suite in the DT department for Years 9 – 11 and in the Dixon for Sixth Form. They are supervised by the member of staff on duty and a House Prefect. It is possible for day pupils to stay for supper and prep, they just need to inform the Houseparent at morning registration. If a day pupil is regularly staying for supper and prep, or has regular drama or music rehearsals for example, notification by email to the Houseparent is helpful so it can be recorded on the signing out sheets. There is a charge for supper and prep that gets put on the end of term bill. Day pupils in Years 9-11 need to sign out with the member of staff on duty at the end of prep. Sixth Form day pupils need to sign out with the member of staff on duty in the Dixon.

At 8.35pm - All boarders in the House sign in with the member of staff on duty in the Common Room or kitchen in Summerhill. If a boarder has an activity after prep, and is unable to make registration at 8.35pm, then they need to inform the member of staff on duty, in person, prior to prep. If a pupil subsequently wants to leave the House after having signed in at 8.35pm, then they must see the member of staff on duty and sign back in with them once they have returned to the House. On Friday nights, prep finishes at 8.00pm for everyone and the whole House registers with the member of staff on duty, in Summerhill.

General House Information

Personal Property and Lockers

It is imperative that all clothing and personal possessions are clearly named. If this is the case, any items that go missing will get returned to the House. Each student is allocated a locker, which has two sections to it. The top locker is for books and the bottom one is large enough to store your Kit bag, hockey stick and other PE kit. The locker room is under the library. You get to it from outside in the quad, down some steps opposite the main IT room. In Years 9 and 10 the lockers will be in a House area and all Year 11’s share a separate room. The lockers can be securely locked with a padlock and it is important that the girls secure their belongings. Pupils are asked to provide their own 2 padlocks. A combination lock is the best, to avoid girls losing keys. Sixth Form have a study in the Dixon, where they keep their belongings. Sixth formers need a padlock for their study too.

The House Fund

The House facilities include satellite television and supplies for the House kitchen. A number of House social events take place during the year, including end of term events. The school provides each House with a small allowance to help towards the cost of these, but each House also applies a House levy of £5 for day pupils and £10 for boarders per term, which is added to the school account.

Valuables

It is strongly urged that valuable personal property (including any mobile phones or musical instruments) be privately insured. Pupils are free to bring in mobiles etc. but they must take full responsibility for looking after them and ensure they are used in an appropriate manner.

Lost Property

Items of lost property such as Sports equipment, School books and bags will be taken to the Lost Property Room which opens at 11.00 am and 1.30 pm (opposite the Staff Duty Room) when pupils can view.

Inter-House Competitions

Throughout the year there are Inter-House competitions. The academic year starts off with the House Music Competition, where Middle and Summerhill get together to perform a whole House song and a music ensemble. This is followed by House hockey later on in the term. In the Spring term there is House netball and cross country and in the Summer term, there is the House tennis, cross country relay and the House Swimming Gala. The end of the year finishes with House Athletics (Sports Day).

Charity in Summerhill

Raising money for charities is at the heart of Summerhill and as a House, Summerhill organises the whole school to pack shoe boxes for the Genesis Trust in Bath, during the Autumn Term. We have been involved in the Pretty Muddy Event, raising money for Cancer Research and students in the House have done some individual raising of money too; the House has made donations to a Year 12 Summerhill student who completed a 120 km cycle and swim in over 40 degrees heat for the Stephen Lawrence Foundation and to a Year 10 Summerhill student who cycled to raise money for Black Lives Matter as well some sixth formers running 30km each to raise money and awareness for Movember.

Baking in House

During the week after school, the students have the opportunity to do some baking during Activity time. There is regular chocolate brownie making! There are also plenty of artistic projects going on and a wide range of board games. Girls are also encouraged to spend time outside enjoying the beautiful school grounds.

House Entertainment

There is always House entertainment on the last evening before the end of term, which we pair up with our brother house, Middle, for:

We do the following activities:

Autumn Term Wide Games on the Upper. Then food is provided in the Pavilion afterwards.

Spring Term There is an Easter hunt, where everyone hunts for hidden Easter eggs. The Year 13’s, Mrs Lopez and Mr Symth, hide around the school grounds and have to be found too! This is followed by a BBQ.

Summer Term There is a water slide followed by a BBQ in the Middle garden. Afterwards, the students go back to the House to say goodbye to the Year 13’s and other leavers.

11

Boarding in Summerhill

Casual Boarding

There may be occasions when it would be helpful that your child boarded and if there is space available, they are welcome to casually board. In order to do this, you will need to book in advance and send Mrs Lopez an email with the proposed dates. Once agreed and it is confirmed there is space available, you will be sent a form to complete, that will need to be returned to Mrs Lopez before your child boards. The charges for this will be added to the termly bill.

Duty Staff

In the week, the Houseparent or a member of the Assistant Housestaff are on duty from 4.30pm - lights out. When non-resident Housestaff leave after lights out, Mrs Lopez or the resident assistant, Miss Hay, will be on call throughout the night. The duty staff can be contacted on the office phone in the evenings or on the House mobile. At weekends, it will be either Mrs Lopez or Miss Hay on duty. Mr Lopez will also be carrying out some duties within the House.

Family Time and Buddy Families

During the week, after Registration at 8.35pm on some days, there is ‘Family time’, when all the boarders will be in the Common room or kitchen. It is a time for catching up with one another, playing games, learning life skills, doing quizzes, arts and crafts or other activities. During this time it is a mobile and computer screen free zone! The activities tend to be organised by the pupils themselves, buddy families or the duty staff. The boarders are allocated into a ‘buddy family’ at the start of the year, which has a mix of year groups in, so that they all get to know each other.

Laundry/Domestic Arrangements

• Boarder’s laundry is washed 3 times a week. All clothing, including casual clothes, needs to be clearly named.

• Please ensure that your child has some spare nametapes, so that any new clothes purchased can be named.

• The Housekeepers can also arrange for items to be dry-cleaned for an additional charge.

• To make their rooms feel like home, boarders can bring their own bedding. It is useful to have 2 sets of bedding (2 single duvet covers, 2 single sheets and 2 pillow cases). If boarders bring any extra pillows or bedding, please can they be clearly named.

• The boarders must make their beds in the morning and open their curtains.

• Rooms should be kept tidy.

Electrical Appliances

If you plan to bring any portable equipment with you, for example, laptops, hair-dryers, etc. can you please ensure, as far as is practicably possible, that the power supply cable is in good condition; that the plug is not damaged or corroded; that the flex has no signs of tears/breaks; and is either the original cable supplied or a replacement approved by the manufacturer of the equipment to be used. For all equipment, including chargers, you should check that your equipment would function appropriately using the 240 Volt supply in the UK. Your power cable should also be fitted with the correct size fuse – 3 amp for equipment below 700 Watts, and a 13 amp fuse for anything over 700 Watts.

Kingswood School undertake regular electrical appliance testing on equipment brought to the school to determine its safety.

Should any equipment fail to pass the tests, it will have to be removed from use and they will not be able to use it.

12

Use of Mobile Phones

We have a no mobile phone policy during Family time, Registrations, in the kitchen (as we like it to be a place where we all talk to one another and socialise) and in the Common Room when we are altogether as a House.

We take in all electronics (phones, computers and iPads) from Year 9 – 11 overnight and their appliances are left in their allocated slots in the office, which is locked. All phones handed in are asked to be switched off overnight.

Passports, Money and Medication

When the students arrive at the start of each term, passports, travel documents and money need to be handed to the Senior Houseparent, who will put them in the House safe. The Medical Centre should be made aware of any medical conditions and regular medication that is being taken by a pupil. Any necessary medicines of any kind must be given into the care of the Medical Centre staff or Houseparent, who will ensure that they are available to the pupil when appropriate.

Contact for the medical centre: kingswoodmc@kingswood.bath.sch.uk

Boarding Events in the House

One of the highlights of the year is our Christmas in Summerhill, that involves an evening decorating the tree, making personalised stockings that get hung on the staircase and dancing! We then have our Christmas Day, that involves the girls opening their stockings, preparing the Christmas meal, decorating the table and then eating what they have created, followed by an appearance from Father Christmas and Christmas party Games!

We also have regular big suppers in the House at weekends, chocolate fondue evenings, play games, go for walks and host International Food Evenings – these are just a few of the activities we do in House. There is a huge amount of baking done!

13

Visiting Town

Going to Town in the Day

Boarders are allowed to visit Bath at the weekends but they must seek permission from the member of staff on duty after morning registration or after lunch registration. They should report back to the member of staff on duty on their return. They must also sign themselves ‘in and out’ on the iPad. They are expected to be back in School for registration at 5.30pm and supper. Permission is required from the Senior Houseparent to spend lunch or supper in town, if for example it is a meal with parents / visitors.

Town Leave on Friday and Saturday Evenings

Sixth Form pupils may go down to town on Friday and Saturday evenings. On a Friday night, Sixth Formers may go down to town after prep and should be back in the House by 10.00pm.

On a Saturday night, Sixth Formers may go into town after the 6.30pm registration. Year 12 boarders need to back in the House by 10.00pm and the Year 13 boarders have to be back by 10.45pm. They may not go to town alone and must stay and return together.

Use of Kitchen / Food in House

The kitchen can be used for making snacks in the evenings after prep, which are provided Monday to Friday and at the weekends. There is a fridge where boarders are able to store their own food, which needs to be clearly labelled. Over the weekend, the boarders have breakfast in House and on some Saturday nights the House will have supper. Food should be eaten off a plate and may only be consumed in the common room or kitchen.

NO PREPARED FOOD ALLOWED IN BEDROOMS.

Everyone is responsible for doing her own washing up / putting their crockery in the dishwasher. There is also a duty rota for ensuring the kitchen is tidy at the end of an evening

Mid-week Parties

As a boarding community, we do not allow boarders to attend mid-week parties that occur Sunday to Thursday inclusive. This could be counter-productive to the students’ work undertaken the following day, and may have a detrimental impact upon their prep.

Weekend Leave

Applications for weekend exeats, together with the relevant paperwork, must be completed by the Thursday preceding the relevant weekend. If a boarder wishes to stay away from school on a Friday, Saturday and / or Sunday, the Senior Houseparent must receive written permission by parents or guardians outlining where they will be staying, who they will be staying with and the reason for the exeat. Written permission is also required from the host, which needs to include the contact details of where the pupil will be staying (phone number and address) and agreement they will take responsibility for the boarder. If permission is not received from both the parents /guardians and hosts, then the pupil will be unable to go on exeat. This is the same if a boarder wants to go out for a day exeat over a weekend.

Sensitive Use of IT

Pupils are expected to be sensitive in their use of mobile phones and computers in the evenings, especially in their rooms and communal areas. Nobody should be making or receiving phone calls after their bedtimes. For Sixth Formers, continuous use of phones or computers after lights out, that disrupts others in their bedrooms, will result in the phone / computer being taken in and put in the office overnight. If this happens, parents will be informed of misuse of IT.

Pupil Responsibility in the House

Everyone should observe the times to be back in the House in the evenings, in bedrooms and should be quiet after lights out. Nobody should be out of bed after lights out except to visit the bathroom or in an emergency.

14

If it is post lesson 7, the student needs to also seek permission from the member of staff on duty. When leaving campus for authorised reasons during the day, pupils must sign out at the Main School Office and back in at the School Office if they return before the end of the school day.

The pupils are expected to behave with good sense, good manners and good will in every situation. The use of improper language is not tolerated.

There is no use of mobile phones in communal areas in the House during the school day (9.00am – 5.30pm). Obviously, if a pupil needs to contact home for any reason or there is an emergency, they can use their phones.

Illness During the School Day

If a pupil is ill during the school day and needs to go home, she must only do this through the Medical Centre and not phone parents directly to collect them. The Medical Centre will ring parents and inform them and let us know if your child has had to go home.

Smoking and Alcohol

Smoking or bringing alcohol into the House are considered very serious breaches of trust, and will be dealt with accordingly.

School policy on alcohol

Pupils are forbidden to possess or drink alcohol on School premises except as specified at approved school functions. This ban includes alcopops. While pupils are under the School's control, they are forbidden to visit licensed premises and to purchase alcohol. This applies to day pupils during the School day and to boarders at all times, except Sixth Form pupils who have been granted town leave at a weekend or for a special evening event. Pupils are reminded that it is a breach of the law for persons under the age of 18 to purchase alcoholic drinks.

School policy on smoking

Smoking is forbidden, both on School premises and while pupils are under the School's control (including while they are travelling to and from School). This includes using e-cigarettes and vapour pens. Pupils are also forbidden to bring smoking materials onto School premises.

Drug related matters

Any pupil found to be in possession, or found to be in the company of others in possession, of illegal drugs and substances including new psychoactive substances (NPS) faces the prospect of immediate and permanent exclusion from the School.

House Sanctions

All of the usual school sanctions apply in the House but, in addition, a number of House sanctions are applied if the House rules are broken. There is a House Sanctions book in the Office, where any misbehaviour is recorded, with the action taken.

• Pupils may be asked to pay for any damage to the House if they have behaved irresponsibly.

• Pupils may be banned from certain House areas if their behaviour falls below expected standards. The length of this ban will depend on the seriousness of the offence.

• A student’s right to visit Bath may be withdrawn if there is any inappropriate behaviour in town. This privilege might also be withdrawn if a student’s academic work and effort is below an acceptable standard.

• Any discourtesy shown to the Housekeepers will be reported to the Houseparent and dealt with seriously.

• Continual lateness to registrations will result in a phone call home and / or further sanctions, which would initially be a House detention. For boarders, see sanctions for lateness to boarder registrations below.

• Pupils will be asked to clean up if they leave a mess in their rooms or the House common room or kitchen.

• If phones / computers are being misused in House, they will be confiscated and locked in the House office. Repeated misuse will result in parents being contacted. Failure to hand in their phone before bed / putting a fake phone in, will result in the pupil having restricted access to their phone in the evenings. This will be for a period of time, decided by the Houseparent.
