bold textured modern Holly and her husband wanted a “Modern Coastal”-style bedroom with a bold, black and white color palette. Furniture constructed of light woods with rounded forms enhance the beachy, mid-century modern vibe and pair beautifully with the light wood flooring. Large black accents of various textures add striking contrast to the material palette.

elegant earthy inviting Marsha and Dan were looking for a formal living room design that matches the classic Tuscan style of their second home. Light, naturallyfinished hard woods, earth tones, and luxurious gold accents give this space the simple elegance and inviting warmth characteristic of Italian and Tuscan design.

rustic cozy warm Sydney and her husband love the cozy, rustic feel of a Scottish bar and wanted to bring that atmosphere to their new home in San Antonio, TX. Olive-colored walls give the whole space a moody, intimate vibe, and the leather furniture adds a masculine touch that greatly warms the color palette. The adjacent sunroom serves as an additional seating area perfect for curling up with a book, and a small, casual home office for Sydney.

“Together let us desire, conceive, and create the new structure of the future, which will embrace architecture and sculpture and painting in one day rise toward Heaven from the hands of a million workers like the crystal symbol of a new faith.” Walter Gropius, 1919

METa Metropolitan School of Design Arts || Prof. Linda Zimmer || Fall 2018 - Spring 2019 METa is a design arts university located in Detroit, Michigan. The proposed project inhabits the historic Dry Docks Complex, an abandoned former ship manufacturing and storage warehouse. METa intends to take advantage of one of many inexpensive, abandoned properties and cultivate growth within the city’s population, a few decades after an economic-related mass exodus. Detroit is a well-renowned artist and musician hotspot, making it an ideal location for an educational design institute. Ideally the students and faculty at METa would draw inspiration from the culturally and artistically rich city, and use their design education to help improve and facilitate the growth of Detroit.

METa is designed to be an accessible and inclusive academic institution that focuses on collaboration and exposure between different design fields. By emphasizing large, shared spaces and creating a central core circulation, the atmosphere and culture of social hierarchy and elitism between students of different design fields, as well as between students and faculty, is greatly reduced. The spaces that are meant to be shared by all students and faculty are: the student designer store, gallery, cafe, pinup rooms, printing facilities, labs, and workshops. The utilization of these shared facilities is meant to create a positive, collaborative studio culture where everyone feels passionate, motivated, and heard.

South Facade Elevation This design is primarily focused on moving people throughout the space easily to their destination, while offering a wide variety of work environments and collaboration opportunities. It is also intended to be inviting to the public, offering a public student gallery and student designer store, where aspiring designers can learn and begin to brand themselves by selling their products and/or designs. By separating the building into three full-height spaces, the hierarchical nature of an educational institution feels more balanced, with the focus being primarily on the student work, and the learning environment.

VINYL Boutique Hotel & Bar || Prof. Jenna Fribley || Fall 2017

VINYL Boutique Hotel and Bar is located at 322 Main St., in Springfield, Oregon, neighboring the Washburne Cafe. The design concept for this boutique hotel remodel is to explore the different levels of social intimacy and interactions. It is a modern take on some of the design ideas and styles from the 1970’s, with a focus on simple, honest expression of sustainable materials, and custom-designed furnishings and light fixtures inspired by pieces of the past. This design includes one ADA-accessible hotel room with an ADA-accessible bathroom on the main floor, an inside lounge surrounding the primary staircase, and outdoor seating area/green space that extends into the parking lot, two separate bar seating areas, a custom designed conversation pit, and custom casework design. It is meant to be a combination hotel lobby and bar that welcomes everyone in for a drink in a relaxed, cozy, social environment and encourages social interaction between guests of the hotel as well as locals of the Eugene/Springfield area.

LNDBRG

Apparel made to inherit. || Prof. Cem Kayatekin || Fall 2017

LNDBRG by Darla Lindberg is a high-end clothing brand that focuses on timeless fashion, long-term wear and use of garments, and silhouettes from vintage fashion design. The proposed garment factory is located on the 11th and 12th floor of 38 W 15th Ave in Manhattan, NY, located in the historical garment district. The workspace can hold from 20-45 employees, and can be used for both assembly line work and piecework. The 11th floor is dedicated to production, prototyping, shipping, and subletting space. The 12th floor holds a flexible workspace for Darla and her team, a conference space, a kitchen and lounge for the whole factory, and can easily be transformed into an event space. Located on the 1st floor is the pop-up shop, to be used by LNDBRG for various pop-up events, as well as a rental space for other pop-ups. Like LNDBRG fashion designs, the factory space is minimalistic, influenced by timeless European styles and furnishings, with durable and environmentally-friendly materials. The space itself is meant to reflect, but not overwhelm, the simplicity and quality of LNDBRG clothing.

QUIRKI

Quirki Coworki

Coworking + Retail Space || Prof. Kyuho Ahn || Winter 2016

Located on the top floor of an existing 7-story building in Dallas, Texas, Quirki Coworki offers a variety of office spaces to be rented and shared by multiple different companies, with a focusoon creative-types. This space figuratively and literally combines the two most important phases for designers, makers, and producers: creating and displaying. Breaking the shape of the existing building footprint is an elongated central path. It acts as the main circulation route, marked by post-and-lintel structures to guide users through the space. The procession through this main pathway acts as a meditative route for users to transition from the daily work environment to the evening event space--and vice versa. At one end of the central path lies the wet/dry makers’ studio, and at the other, a social retail and gallery space, with flexible components that allows for easy transitioning to an evening event space. Collaboration is a key component to the design. Within the different coworking office spaes, there is a spectrum of formal and informal collaborative meeting spaces. The Quirki Coworki office allows creatives to work in their most preferred office environment, and is adaptable to their wide variety of needs for designing and producing. Level 7 Floor Plan

NONNONARCH ARCH

The Intimacy Chair Prof. Tina Christensen || DIS Furniture Design Studio || Summer 2017

The Intimacy Chair is an exploration in Danish furniture design and in the pairing of loose and rigid materials. This chair design was based on the concept of hygge, the Danish word for coziness. Made of beautiful white maple wood and soft, undyed canvas, it represents the honest materiality and cozy design elements that are integral to Danish design. The canvas is draped and strapped on the underside of the chair to hold it to a

specific, but adjustable, tautness. A matching cushion sits between layers of canvas. This design element is meant to symbolize the soft throw blankets and cushions offered at Copenhagen’s many cafes and restaurants that invoke a sense of community and gathering. It comfortably sits one person spaciously, two smaller people intimately, and is ideal for sharing with a pet or favorite pillow.

Cumulus was designed as a ceiling panel lighting system, made of perforated wood panels and embedded LED lights, specifically for Falling Sky Pizzeria and Brew Pub location at the University of Oregon. The existing restaurant is dimly lit, with hanging sculptural pendants over booths that provide very little light, and string lights that line some of the perimeter of the space. It feels very basement-like, and the laser-cut layered

Cumulus Perforated Ceiling Panel || Prof. Virginia Cartwright || Winter 2017

cloud pendants in the center of the room are the only elements that are emblematic of the title of the restaurant. We proposed to redesign a large amount of the ceiling, integrating our own designed luminaire, Cumulus, over the booth seating and bar, to create intimacy zones reinforced by lighting and ceiling height. Our other lighting redesign features industrial, outdoor sconce lighting around the columns.

Larger perforation areas distribute more light. Point-distribution determined by intimacy level. Evokes feeling of being under low-hanging clouds, aniconically, with the hopes to mimic natural daylight with cool tones to offset warm materials. Located over the most intimate zone of the restaurant/bar, Cumulus produces an overall ambient glow, illuminating the table surface and

reflecting in non-directional light. The goal of the space redesign is to fill it with ambient light and create an experiential lighting design that engages the space and stays true to restaurant branding. the lighting panels drop to 8 ft above floor level, in contrast to the 10 ft high ceilings of the rest of the space, which creates different zones of intimacy.
