DESIGN PROPOSALS | FOOTPATH Since the teaching garden is mainly designed for school communities, red rubber was chosen as the material of paving which is ideal for a play surface, and it is also a recycled product. The specie for the lawn is Kidney Vetch. It does not require mowing as it is a low maintained green cover specie that can be maintained by people stepping on it. The material for edges is stainless steel which can provide a clear and thin edge between the rubber and the lawn.

The graphics show one unit of the central playground. The structure is similar to an auditorium, and the central circular space is designed for outdoor teaching, performances and play time. The steel wire can support climbers to grow up, the plant pots between columns and in the platform can bring nature into this structure, and combine education and cultivation together.

TIANYI JIANG S1611796 | 10

DESIGN PROPOSALS | PLANTING

Plants are combined with the design to help create a stimulating outdoor learning environment. All the vegetation integrated with the structure can act as a teaching aid; students can grow their own food and watch how plants develop over time. Besides, after plants grow up, the features of this structure will change and become more sheltered and green with seasonal colour changes. The whole design would fade into the background of hedges and the scene of Saughton Park.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES | RUBBER

SOFT SURFACES WETPOUR RUBBER SURFACE It is proposed to use red wetpour rubber with an EPDM wearing course layer as the surface of both the footpath and the main playground in the Central Circle. Children and school communities are the main ser vice groups of the design. Rubber surfaces can provide well-protected play areas to children.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES | COR-TEN STEEL

KLOECKNER METALS COR-TEN STEEL Cor-ten steel is proposed to use as the surfaces of the Flower columns as well as columns and side surfaces of the Central Circle. The Cor-ten sheets are not proposed to be pre-finished because the oxidation of themselves will protect the sheets from corrosion with a dark brown colour over the surfaces.

DEVELOPMENTAL STUDIES | STAINLESS STEEL

METALS4U DULL POLISHED STAINLESS STEEL Stainless steel is proposed to use as the inside layer of the planters of the Flower Column and sur faces of the built-in planters of the Cental Circle. The polished sur face treatment will be used to give this material a reflective sur face.
