NO SHORTCUTS. Find a way or make one.

WHO we are KIPP Massachusetts is a network of free, open-enrollment public charter schools dedicated to helping students in underserved communities climb the mountain to and through college and live a life of choice.

WHAT we do We offer a college preparatory education to students from underserved communities, and an uninterrupted continuum of support for students and families, to and through college. Our program is based on more time on task, an ethos of earning, diverse field learning opportunities, extensive professional development for teachers, alumni support through college graduation, and increased educational opportunities and support for families.

WHY it matters Nationwide, just 8% of students from low-income communities graduate from college, compared to the 82% college graduation rate of their affluent peers. This economic achievement gap imposes on the United States the equivalent of a permanent national recession. Increasing the national college graduation rates of low-income students from 8% to 30% would add between $400 billion and $650 billion to our annual GDP. KIPP's national college graduation rate is 33%.

OUR PLAN for the future By 2019, KIPP Massachusetts will serve more than 2,100 students and their families at five schools in Lynn and Boston. Also by 2019, each of our five schools will be 95% sustainable on public funding alone, assuming current levels of public funding remain the same in future years. Nationwide, the KIPP network will serve more than 55,000 students by 2015.

KIPP schools are doing our part to create a sustainable solution to the public education crisis.

KIPP MA WHO we are

In the Words of Our Executive Director

TEAM BEATS individual.

CALEB DOLAN Executive Director KIPP Massachusetts

I am truly humbled by the strength of our KIPP Massachusetts Team and Family. It is inspiring to look around and see our team of kids, families, teachers, and leaders – both new and veteran –

working together to transform from a single school in Lynn to a multi-school, multi-city KIPP Massachusetts region that will serve over 2,100 kids and their families on their way to better lives. Being involved with KIPP since 2000, founding KIPP Gaston in North Carolina in 2001, and now leading a region of KIPP schools here in Massachusetts, I feel supremely lucky to be a part of KIPP. This has been the

best career path – and life path – I could have taken. 2 KIPP MASSACHUSETTS

KIPP MA “ WHAT we do

In the Words of Our Teachers

I have never been around a group of adults

and kids who are so dynamic and passionate.

Proving the possible is something you see every day here. I became a teacher

because education gave me opportunities I would not have had otherwise. I want to continue that trend for our kids at KIPP.“

- Julian Saavedra Eighth-grade Social Studies Teacher Third year at KIPP

KIPP has both structure and discipline and fun.

The Joy Factor is everywhere at KIPP.

For me, teaching is about helping kids make the choices they want to in life, and KIPP provides a great balance of challenging our kids and supporting them.“

- Shauna Mulligan Ninth-grade Literature Teacher Fifth year at KIPP

To me, being a KIPP teacher means bringing private-school-quality education to kids in underserved communities. The drastically different quality of education you see between private schools and urban public schools just isn’t right. KIPP

is doing its part to

balance that inequality.“

- Duane McClendon Athletic Director, KAL Collegiate High School First year at KAL Collegiate Third year in the KIPP network

WHY it matters

In the Words of KIPP's National Leader

KIPP

RICHARD BARTH CEO KIPP Foundation

We know at KIPP that it takes hard work to achieve our mission to grow

and sustain

a national network of high performing charter schools. None of this will happen overnight...the question is,

"How will we not just get bigger, but get better?" By 2015, we will double the number of students we educate annually (from 27,000 to 55,000) and increase ten-fold the number of KIPP alumni in college (to 10,000). Our experience over the last five to ten years has led us to understand that we need to be incredibly

intentional in making sure that our KIPPsters are enrolling in colleges with a maximum chance of graduating. At KIPP, we believe that by: providing a rigorous college preparatory education, focusing on a much stronger college matching process, supporting our KIPP alumni when they are in college, building partnerships with universities, and using data to regularly assess progress towards our goals, our KIPP students will achieve college completion rates that rival their more affluent peers.

KIPP“ MA OUR PLANS for the future In the Words of Our KIPPsters

Some kids [who don't go to KIPP] make fun of me that I have such long hours, but I just say, 'You go to school for six hours a day. I go to school for ten hours a day and I'm going to

KIPP all the way through high school. Which one of us is going to college?' It's hard work, but it's a

great opportunity."

- Lucheyla Fifth-grade Student at KAL Middle School

I've had to make a lot of sacrifices and I stayed back in two different grades, but KIPP has been there for me no matter what, helping me do what I need to do to succeed. I'm proud of myself, and I feel like I've grown up a lot. Now, every night before I sit down to do my homework, I look up my favorite college online for inspiration. It helps motivate me to do

what I need to do to get there."9
