a better tomorrow
2009-2010 Annual Report
a Promise “Whoooooose House??? This is the house that has the scholars, Who want to build a better tomorrow, Who do their best, achieve success, hoping that others will follow…”
KIPP Metro Atlanta has seen tremendous success in this past year that we can all be proud of, including: • KIPP STRIVE Academy opened in July 2009 in Southwest Atlanta and now serves 183 students in fifth and sixth grades; • KIPP Vision opened in July 2010 in Southeast Atlanta with 85 students in fifth grade; • KIPP Metro Atlanta middle school students outscored the Georgia state average CRCT scores in every subject including Science, Math, Reading , Writing, Language Arts and Social Studies; • KIPP Metro Atlanta was recently awarded $2.5 million to support our growth in Metro Atlanta from the Charter School Growth Fund, and; • KIPP Metro Atlanta secured a charter and facility from Atlanta Public Schools for KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School scheduled to open July 2011.
Every child deserves a high quality education that will allow them to meet the challenges of tomorrow. With the support and confidence of the Atlanta philanthropic community, KIPP Metro Atlanta currently offers a college preparatory education in our four Atlanta middle schools, serving more than 900 students and more than 400 alumni in the KIPP Through College Program. KIPP believes that if you demand higher expectations, provide more time for instruction and learning, and hire excellent teachers and school leaders, students will achieve at high levels. This belief is what drives our work in Metro Atlanta and the promise we make to every student. For the past eight years, KIPP Metro Atlanta has been building the steps to reach this goal. • We have built momentum for our work with student achievement results that continue to surpass state and district averages. • We have built the capacity to expand through our growth planning and fundraising efforts. • We have built opportunities for more students to attend KIPP schools by opening additional middle schools and securing a charter for a high school. • We have built a network of support through our regional board and staff. Our work continues. We plan to expand our work in Atlanta so more students will be empowered with the knowledge and character to build a better tomorrow. KIPP, the Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national network of free, open-enrollment, collegepreparatory public schools dedicated to preparing students in underserved communities for top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond. There are currently 99 KIPP schools across the nation serving more than 26,000 students.
KIPP students spend approximately 50% more time in school than their peers at traditional schools. KIPP students typically attend school: • 7:30 am until 5:00 pm each weekday • A half day every other Saturday • 2 - 3 weeks each summer
Momentum “The success of our KIPP middle schools built the foundation for the creation of a KIPP high school. Our students will be able to continue their climb to college with the same culture of high expectations and no excuses at KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School.” Dave Howland
Founding Principal KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School
KIPP’s Impact
The KIPP Foundation commissioned Mathematica Policy Research to conduct a rigorous third party evaluation to examine how KIPP schools fare over the long term. KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP South Fulton Academy were included in the study. Key findings released in June 2010 included: • KIPP does not attract more able students (as compared to neighboring public schools); • KIPP schools have a statistically significant impact on student achievement; and, • Academic gains at many KIPP schools are large enough to substantially reduce race and income based achievement gaps.
For the second year in a row, KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP South Fulton Academy are the two highest performing non-selective middle schools in the state of Georgia serving a population that is more than 50% low-income.*

Capacity “KIPP South Fulton Academy allows me the freedom to teach. I have more time in the day to motivate and challenge my students with exciting lessons. I also have the time to listen and give them the attention they need.” Dorothy Hull, 8th grade social studies teacher at KIPP South Fulton Academy 2010 recipient of a National KIPP Excellence in Teaching Award
Planning for the Future
The vision of KIPP Metro Atlanta is to increase the number of college graduates and change the mindset of what is possible in public education through partnerships with local school districts. Over the past year, KIPP Metro Atlanta has been building the capacity to execute this vision. • We hired a Chief Operating Officer to manage and guide the work of the Shared Service Team, which will allow the Executive Director more time to coach and mentor the current and future school leaders. • We opened our fourth middle school, KIPP Vision Academy, which serves students in Southwest Atlanta. • We secured the charter from Atlanta Public Schools for KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School, which upon its opening in 2011, will be the fifth KIPP school in Metro Atlanta. • KIPP Metro Atlanta obtained two facilities provided by Atlanta Public Schools for KIPP Vision Academy and for our future high school. • The Charter School Growth Fund awarded KIPP Metro Atlanta $2.5 million in funding to support our growth in Atlanta.
We secured more than $5.4 million for capital improvements. We would like to thank the following contributors to the capital campaign: A Friend of KIPP Metro Atlanta A Hand Up Francis L. Abreu Charitable Trust AEC Trust Mary Allen Lindsay Branan Foundation Courts Foundation James M. Cox Foundation

Opportunities
“I know I will be successful because my teachers instilled in me a desire to learn and challenged me to always strive for more.” Asile Patin
former KIPP WAYS Academy scholar Recipient of a 2010 National Doris Fisher KIPPster of the Year award Current freshman at Philips-Exeter Academy.
Serving More Students There are now four KIPP middle schools in operation in Atlanta. • KIPP WAYS Academy and KIPP South Fulton Academy have been in operation since 2003. Each school serves approximately 320 students in grades five through eight. • In July 2009, our third school, KIPP STRIVE Academy, opened within Atlanta Public Schools and now serves 183 students in fifth and sixth grades. KIPP STRIVE Academy will add one grade per year until it serves 320 students in grades five through eight. • In July 2010, KIPP Vision Academy opened in Southeast Atlanta and currently serves its founding class of fifth grade students. Like KIPP STRIVE Academy, it will also add a grade a year until it serves approximately 320 students in grades five through eight. • We now serve more than 400 students in grades nine through twelve through our KIPP Through College (KTC) program.
In 2009, KIPP Metro Atlanta established the KIPP Metro Atlanta Opportunity Fund, a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) designed to support KIPP students who matriculate to private high schools in Georgia. Many
of our students receive financial aid packages that do not quite cover all tuition and expenses, thus preventing
them from enrolling in the high school of their choice. Donations to the KIPP Metro Atlanta Opportunity Fund
become tax credits to the donor’s Georgia tax liability. Thanks to the following donors who provided $40,000 in support to our students attending private college preparatory high schools in Georgia: Ronald and Carol Beerman Barry and Martha Berlin Morris and Kathe Brown George and Elizabeth Case Gilbert and Judy Davis Vinay and Anita Rajenda Gowda Larry and Vickie Hampton

Support “In an environment where few investments have been consistently rewarding, KIPP Metro Atlanta continues to surprise on the upside. Even while adding students and schools, academic achievement has continued to advance. By operating efficiently, KIPP gives us substantial return on every dollar invested. The leverage for society at large may exceed any other investment we make. Advisor, The Kendeda Fund
