WELCOME TO THE 2023 KIPS BAY SHOW HOUSE
Dear Friends,
After a three year long imposed hiatus, the Kips Bay Decorator Show House is proud to be roaring back for its 48th appearance in New York City. We have all witnessed the many changes to our local landscape since March 2020; however, one vital piece of the puzzle remains stalwart and steadfast: The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
The mission of The Kips Bay Boy’s and Girl’s Club is “to enrich and enhance the quality of life for young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between the ages 6-18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances.” At no time in recent history has this call to arms felt more relevant. And for the 10,000 kids in the Bronx who rely upon the club, it has never been more necessary.
To this end, the design community comes together annually with our own twin desire to “enrich and enhance life” in the best way we know how: by design. As ever, we have invited designers to unleash their wildest imaginings side by side in a single house and have given them just a few weeks to achieve their miraculous creations. This year’s setting is in a particular stunner known as “The River Mansion.” The longtime home of a Kips Bay Supporter, this brick and limestone Beaux Arts tour de force is a designated New York City Landmark and part of a historic district - the perfect place to welcome home our own landmark event.
We are so glad to be co-hosting this event once again. It wasn’t easy getting here, but it was surely worth the wait. If you ever wondered for even a moment if New York was going to come back after the pandemic, the answer is a full throated YES. We are back and we cannot wait to welcome you all.
Sincerely,
Jamie Drake Alexa Hampton Co-Chair, Show House Committee Co-Chair, Show House CommitteeSummon your ultimate shower with a touch. With the intuitive design of digital controls, supreme power over water is now at your fingertips. Even Poseidon is impressed.

Why?
BUILDING A BRIGHTER FUTURE
Dear Show House Patrons, Friends, and Participants:
As always, I am honored and delighted to greet you as President of the Board of this iconic institution. Welcome to the 48th edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House; the epitome of inspirational interior design. We are excited to be back!
Each year, Kips Bay staff, select designers and generous volunteers come together to create a Show House which is unveiled during the Opening Night Cocktail Reception and open throughout the month for the public to enjoy.
Our success as an organization is directly related to the generosity of supporters like you and the ever-essential proceeds of this signature event. Many thanks from our board, staff and the over 10,000 children we serve.
Kips Bay’s mission to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6 to 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances” is carried out at nine locations throughout The Bronx, serving over 10,000 members annually.
As Executive Director of this organization, I am grateful we are back where it all started. The Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York is our signature event and important fundraiser. As we adapt to the new normal, we have identified new needs among the youth and community we serve. Isolation, lack of socialization, job insecurity, inflation, food insecurity and many other factors have changed and increased the need for specialized programs and services.
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has been on the forefront of confronting those needs, and a first responder in creating programs that support our members. Our new Culinary Learning Center will help members learn healthy nutrition habits and teach them cooking skills. Our Emotional Wellness program will help youngsters work through mental health issues in a safe and kid-friendly environment. Monthly food giveaways will help our families through these trying times.
The Show House is not only a display of incredible design ideas, but a way for Kips Bay to provide necessary services to those that need us most.
Thank you for your support. Enjoy the Show House!
Sincerely,
James P. Druckman Daniel Quintero President Executive DirectorP.S. Want to become more involved with Kips Bay? Contact me at 212-679-9500 x15 or jdruckman@nydc.com.

Putting their Best Foot Forward
In 2021, Kips Bay’s performing arts program expanded to go even further to meet the needs of members who are interested in the arts for fun, and also as possible careers.
Members do not have to dance and sing to be in the arts. They can create costumes, choreograph dance numbers, design stage lighting, or handle any number of backstage activities. For members who do want to perform, there are a variety of classes, including ballet, salsa, African, hip-hop, modern, and commercial dance. “We also show them how
an important aspect of the arts today,” said Anthony Rodriguez, who took over leadership of the performing arts program in 2021.
“The arts help kids in incredible ways,” he continued. “In a short time span, our current
in their dance abilities and as human beings. Even if they don’t want to pursue the arts, the amazing team-building skills and self-esteem they acquire can easily be applied to other career opportunities.”
Everyone gets a chance to dance, with fun and structured dance. Some members want to sing, so Anthony expanded the program to include voice classes. Recently, the students have been given opportunities to perform at other venues and experience how it feels to prepare for and give a formal performance. By serving members ages 6-18, performing arts at Kips Bay can lead to enjoyment and relationship building – and even to broadening high school, college, and career options. Today’s dancers and singers at Kips Bay just might follow in Anthony’s footsteps.
Anthony Rodriguez, Director, Performing Arts
When Anthony Rodriguez joined Kips Bay as director of the performing arts program in October, it was far from his first visit to the Club. That happened when he was eight years old, when he walked through Kips Bay’s doors for the first time and was inspired to study dance here.
Anthony then went off to attend Ballet Hispánico and graduate from LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and before long, he was on tour dancing with Madonna, Tito Puente, Cyndi Lauper, and Prince.
Now he’s back leading the performing arts program. “The arts program here was always strong,” he said. “My goal is to expand it to the point where young people can aspire to be more than a superstar; to encourage the artistic mentality in other ways.”
My goal is to expand the program to the point where young people can aspire to be more than a superstar; to encourage the artistic mentality in other ways.
A Safe Space for Emotional Expression
Members love to develop and show others their artistic side in our Creative Arts program, which includes traditional art projects like drawing, painting, and ceramics, and also the special skills needed to be creative in the digital arts.
Students take pencil, pen, and crayon to paper, paint to canvas, and clay to pottery wheel to express themselves creatively.
Our digital recording studio also offers young people an opportunity to learn and
practice how to express themselves by using their talents and skills to play and record their own audio and video. First, they work on an Apple computer with keyboard and drum pads to create their own beats and write their own lyrics. Then they go to the recording studio to record their work. Finally, they use greenscreen technology to add video. Once they’re
digital arts YouTube page, where it lives forever for all to see and enjoy.
Sofia S. isn’t only building a better future for herself at Kips Bay, she’s also helping to build a better future for the next generation of Kips Bay kids.
Sofia first joined our Summer Youth Employment program in 2018 as a 15-year-old. By 19, she was a summer camp counselor for nineteen very active five year olds.
The key was to start the day with enthusiasm to match the energy that the kids bring every morning. “I’m their number one supporter. If they have a great idea, I’ll get excited for them and we’ll do it. When I was growing up, my third grade teacher did that for me. It’s more than just playtime. I make sure they know how to share, treat others with respect.”
What did she learn from her Kips Bay experience? “I learned how to give the
Giving and Growing
kids the opportunity to express themselves, and how it feels to have a second family. Kips Bay is a family, and we had this experience together. I want these kids to know that Kips Bay will always have their back.”
Sofia starts at Manhattan College in the fall, majoring in childhood education. “I’m excited! It’s a new journey for me. Sofia is planning to participate in Manhattan College’s five-year program to get her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
“I want to come back to be a group leader here,” she said. Kips Bay will always have Sofia’s back, too.
I learned how to give the kids the opportunity to express themselves, and how it feels to have a second family. Kips Bay is a family, I want these kids to know that Kips Bay will always have their back.

Transforming Kips Bay for Years to Come
The T biggest and most dramatic renovation r initiative in the history of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is about to begin. What advantages will this ambitious renovation bring to our growing population?
Our priority is to make the physical space much more effectively designed to host our educational and opportunity-driven programming. At the same time, our renovations will create a safer and more structured environment, one uniquely equipped to meet the needs of our growing number of members — and of the greater community as well.
“As the community’s needs change, our physical space must change, too,” says Daniel Quintero, Executive Director. “We need to continue to invest in our physical structures in order to meet the needs of our community, in particular our younger members.”
Most dramatically, we will enhance and beautify our game room, creating a mecca for that young audience and provide a wider range of the facility’s supportive offerings. That space, the centerpiece of the building, will be modmaking the space more inviting for all, with natural light.
We will also upgrade and enhance our computer lab, a critical resource for members of all ages, and enlarge our teen center to better serve that populathis renovation, we can more effectively assist young adults with essential services, including career awareness, college readiness, and digital arts.
areas that our members’ evolving needs have outgrown: our dome, portable program spaces and program rooms will be reconand programming, a thoughtfully planned investment in community spaces that will return value now and long into the future. Construction starts in early 2023 and is expected to be completed by calendar year end. Current needs will be met throughout the renovation by careful planning that reroutes activities into areas that remain open, including our back wing, pool, gym, and ice rink.
And because the future sustainability of our community is a priority as well, our new and improved physical space is designed to be more eco-friendly: Kips
ing costs and decreasing our footprint; a big improvement for the environment.
We need to continue to invest in our physical structures in order to meet the needs of our community, in particular our younger members.

River Mansion
I love you. I loved you. The first time I saw you. Yes, love at first sight does exist. The years have gone by and the grace of time has brought many memories to be cherished.
I was constructed between 1899 and 1902. The imagination of architect Robert D. Cohen and the developer/owner/builder Stewart and H.I. Smith builders.
A group of architects had returned from Europe, filled with creative inspiration and wanting to share a collective vision of beautiful homes similar in height and flaunting European style. I am the River Mansion. The name inscribed over the entrance powerfully placed on the corner of 106th Street and Riverside Drive.
The area has been landmarked since 1973, thanks to the Riverside Drive West 105th Street Historic District. The Red Belgium brick and limestone mansion is elegant in its expanse. It was built during the short lived Bozart period of architecture. Both 337 Riverside Drive and the house next door on West 106th Street were built simultaneously.
The grandeur of this historic district on the Upper West Side is unexpected and due to technology and a recently released book by author Daniel K. Walken. Historic interest in this area of the city has been rekindled.
Here I stand having been purchased in 1904 by Julia Marlow, a Broadway star who was known for her outstanding Shakespearean performances. After three years, she sold the unique gem to Lothar Faber of Faber Pencils. After these inhabitants and a few more left. At some point, Columbia University is said to have owned this Jewel. However, as the cycle of life, challenging times and challenging times embarked awkwardly offering me up due to necessity into a single room occupancy.
My foundation is strong and I was eventually purchased by John Mace, who with his associate started the Vocal Arts Foundation. Teaching opera and stage movement performances in the house were said to have been grand and fabulous. There was even a stage on the east side of the second floor. At a time when the maps in New York City taxi cabs only went to 96th Street as if Manhattan ended there.
It was the mid late 1970s when the stately River mansion 106th Street and Riverside Drive was purchased by both the Paul and Kate Ford family and Edgar Bronfman Junior. The house was divided into a two family dwelling up until the dissolution of the Ford’s family marriage. Edgar Bronfman Junior, now married to Broadway stage screen actress and model Sherry Brewer purchased the Fords half of the magnificent building. Then together with interior decorator designer David Laurance, they set out on a mission to both renovate, restore and preserve as much of the original details as possible. The River Mansion was ready to reveal its secrets. For instance, the interior staircase area was reinforced with steel beams in case the future suggested an elevator. We were able to install a proper elevator.
Much of the decorative beauty was reproduced on site rather than outsourced. We followed through on what the house had managed to maintain, such as the interior pillars, dental molding, French doors, and anything ornate including the stair railings, etc.
We curated an elegant warm home for our then young growing family. The River Mansion was thrilled with its newest inhabitants who were able to embrace the value of restoration, preservation and respecting the past.
As a gift to the neighbors, trees were planted and pebble washed sidewalks were installed which is a unique old world detail. We also power washed the statue base of the Franz Siegel statue. The neighbors formed a 106 street block association and hired a block guard. We improved Riverside park from 105th to 106th Street along with the West 105th Street Improvement Association. We petitioned the city to restore Strauss Park at 106th and Broadway, which they did.
Determined not to let the changes taking place on the upper West side undermine the compassion, humanity and respect we had for our community as neighbors. We worked together, achieving some important positive goals.
As the years passed, the Bronfman’s marriage dissolved and Sherry B. Bronfman and their three young children, Vanessa, Benjamin and Hannah continued to live in their elegantly curated home. It was at this time, interior decorator designer David Fleming’s professional knowledge was helpful.
The children’s educational foundation was at the West side Montessori School and the Upper West side, as well as New York City offered creative choices for each child to dream, set goals and pursue them.
The love of books and reading, constant exposure to art. I’d say “One big museum uptown or three small galleries downtown. Talk among yourselves. We must have our exposure to culture.” Including the Schomburg Center for research in Black culture.
Christmas rituals included Alvin Ailey Dance Company at City Center and the Nutcracker Ballet at Lincoln Center. There was the Dino Agnos Little Orchestra Society and Winton Marsalis Jazz at Lincoln Center. Sports always and they learned how to do pretty much everything. Dance classes at Dance Theater of Harlem for Vanessa and Alvin Ailey for Hannah.
Then after three guitar lessons, Benjamin, then aged 11 years old, started a band and the rehearsals were at the house. Early punk rock, ska and the afropunk movement were at the time his genre. Some neighbors commented on their improvement. However, once one neighbor called the police after a battle of extremely loud classical Beethoven music against the Loose Nuts.
Energy and growth took place. This is an extremely emotional time. I have so many memories.
If only I could give voice to these beautifully decorated walls. If they could only laugh out loud for the full range of emotions I have experienced.
I am River Mansion and because all things have a vibration, I am not just an inanimate object. I have loved having you. My family take care of me, love me and allow me to experience your growth. Let me say I especially loved all the sounds and being decorated. I loved my now vintage silver background, Grace dining room wallpaper, the recessed lighting under each stair tread, the dining room chandelier which wasn’t electrified and held candles. The Garland stoves, the felt lined silver closets and the double sided sofa. All of the fabrics from companies Old World Weavers, Nobilis Inc. Missoni, Clarence House, Scalamandre Fabric and Jab. We had an array of beautiful custom dollhouse rugs made for different rooms. Some were made by Edward Fields Rugs and Doris Leslie Blau. All the special painted and glazed wall treatments and the elevator with its trompe-l’oeil treatment.
The beautiful art, always giving inspiration and the baby grand piano taking center stage. The parties, fundraisers, dinners and the sound of your singing Christmas carols with Vanessa while helping Santa. The always 12 ft Christmas tree with your traditional Black angel on top. The lady of the House shoveling
snow in the winter, planting flowers everywhere, especially on the roof in the summer. Then there was the faux swimming pool she painted on the roof to humor herself and cause helicopter passengers to wonder. Was it real?
The conversations about books, theater, environment, setting goals, art, music, history makers, culture, food, vitamins, meditation, health, crystals and science. Because everything has a vibration.
I apologize for my pipes. The leaks were my way of crying. You were leaving me and I didn’t want you to leave. You’ve been with me the longest. Even your first grandson spent so much time here. I heard his first word and I remember he dropped a nickel in the elevator treads and jammed the door.
What an experience. Thank you. And now again, thank you. Thank you for my new friends from the Kips Bay Decorator Show House.
I know you and the family. Thank them as well. And for all that they do, they have an incredible mission.
With Love,
Sherry B. Bronfman, Vanessa S. Bronfman, Benjamin Z. Bronfman, Hannah Fallis Bronfman with special thanks to Brendan Fallis

Women’s Committee Co-Chairs, Ms. Patricia Grever-Quackenbush and Ms. Megan Smythe
Volunteer Co-Chairs, Ms. Maureen Lynch and Ms. Maureen Mulheren
To all the volunteers for their valuable contribution of time and effort. We are grateful; we couldn’t do it without you!
The Source for Wonderful Finds
Thank you to all of the design firms, retailers and individuals who have donated beautiful pieces to our shop and helped us raise critical funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
VISIT OUR SHOW HOUSE SHOP
337 Riverside Drive
Each year our Show House visitors look forward to the great finds in our Shop. The funds we raise directly support the award winning afterschool and enrichment programs that Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club offers to 10,000 children throughout the Bronx. For example, your in-kind donation of a table that sells for $500 provides one computer for our computer lab. A sofa that raises $700 sponsors a child at Kips Bay for an entire year.
All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. If you have any treasures you would like to contribute, please call: 718.893.8600 or email: events@kipsbay.org
Thank you for supporting the Kips Bay Show House
Our Mission
To enrich and enhance the quality of life for young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6-18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances.
Our Vision
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club exists to assist young people in realizing and achieving their potential for growth and development utilizing our state-of-the-art facilities, trained and motivated staff, and nationally renowned programs to produce positive contributors to society.
