A joint effort between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club of New York. This event is an important source of funding for both charities, and we thank you for your support. The renovation and redesign of this 8500 square foot home in West Palm Beach has brought together distinguished talent from across the United States. We are grateful for the commitment and dedication of the many designers, artists, artisans and vendors who participate in the Show House, and honored to celebrate their efforts during this exciting highlight of the Palm Beach season. We take pride in the inspiration the Show House will provide for design professionals and aficionados alike, but especially in the positive results this event will provide for 20,000 children in Palm Beach and New York.

Dream Catching a Ariel is the first in her family to go to college. She never thought she was capable of receiving a scholarship or getting a free ride to NYU— the college of her dreams—but she did both. She was surprised, but we weren’t. We knew Ariel. Ariel participated in numerous Kips Bay programs, including Brent’s Club, a substance abuse prevention and education program offered to members in grades 6–12. The ultimate goal of Brent’s Club is to support the development of healthy, productive, and substance-free youth. Ariel was encouraged to apply for a scholarship offered by the Club, made possible through the support of the Brent Shapiro Foundation—and this was part of her essay:

“I am grateful for the lessons and wonderful opportunities Brent’s Club has presented me.... to create bonds with teens who I can now call friends. The support not only from program instructors but also peers empower me to say no to drugs and stay focused on my goals.” After submitting her essay, Ariel was invited out to California with her mom, where she talked more about Brent’s Club and its impact on her life. Her accomplishments as a positive role model earned her a full scholarship. She is currently studying law, mathematics, and politics at NYU. Ariel is a standout reminder of what you can become when you dedicate yourself to a dream. And she’s simply a great kid. We can’t wait to see where life takes her next.

With nine locations in the Bronx, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club reaches youngsters who cannot get to the two main Clubhouses, Palmaro and Coudert. Our facilities are also located in public schools, community centers, and homeless shelters. Members of these facilities enjoy frequent trips to the Clubhouses for swimming, skating, digital arts, and special events.

Spicing up a Learning Opportunity Members at Kips Bay have countless avenues to learn and express themselves, and one experiencing an ongoing surge in popularity is the culinary arts. Given the grim statistics of obesity and childhood diabetes in the Bronx, the need for a bigger space and updated equipment became clear. Luckily, we had the perfect spot in mind at the Coudert Clubhouse. Understanding the value of health and nutrition education for members and their families, we approached our local city council about the need—and raised over $1 million between city funding and private donations to build a new state-of-the-art kitchen.

In June of 2022, we held a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and invited all those who supported the funding and creation of the new Culinary Learning Center. Interior designer and Trustee Ellie Cullman was the creative force behind the kitchen, as well as Trustee Christopher Peacock, who supported the addition of the incredible custom cabinetry. Public officials joined the festivities, including Council Member Pierina Sanchez, along with many trustees, community members and parents of Club members. Over 100 individuals helped us usher in this era in Kips Bay history that will teach members the value of nutritional cooking and healthy eating habits.

In the Culinary Learning Center, members are provided the opportunity to create their own healthy dishes. Our young chefs visit the market, bring back fresh produce and other nutritious items, and prepare dishes together.

3 NEW DOORS OPEN for Children & Teens in 2023

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County has grown from the first Club over 52 years ago to now having 20 Club locations in economically-challenged neighborhoods throughout Palm Beach County. With the opening of three new Club locations this past year including, Jupiter Elementary School, Conniston Middle School in West Palm Beach and Pahokee Middle-Senior High School, Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County is serving more than 13,000 children and teens annually. The new Clubs will help meet the growing demand from Palm Beach County families for quality and affordable after-school and summer programming. The expansion of the Clubs provides a safe place for youth and opportunities to improve their physical, academic, social, emotional and workforce readiness abilities during their nonschool hours. Programming at the Clubs supports predominantly low-income families that have children who require additional academic enrichment support.

The Need is Great At Belvedere Elementary School 61% of low-income youth are not performing at grade level in English and 67% are not performing at grade level in math. At Conniston Middle School 64% of low-income youth are not performing at grade level in English and 66% are not performing at grade level in math. At Forest Hill High School 63% of low-income youth are not performing at grade level in English and 79% are not performing at grade level in math. The average annual cost for an after-school and summer program is $6,600*, making most programs out of reach for low-income families. Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County provides a safe place for children to be kids after school hours and throughout the summer for a $30 annual membership fee. *The Florida After-School Alliance, 2022

Over the last two years, Boy & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County has embarked on a $50 million capital campaign to build new Clubhouses with Workforce Readiness Centers in economicallychallenged areas. At this year’s Annual Winter Ball, the Clubs received an anonymous $7 million gift and an additional $2 million gift from The William H. Pitt Foundation to name the gymnasium of the proposed West Palm Beach Club. These two donations helped complete the funding gap necessary for the construction of the new Julie & Mike Connors Boys & Girls Club and Workforce Readiness Center, a 30,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Club that will target the area’s Title 1 schools, and be located at Dreher Park along Southern Boulevard in an economically disadvantaged and heavily Hispanic community within West Palm Beach’s south end.

In addition to traditional program spaces such as a regulation-sized Gym, Cantina, Computer Lab, Cultural Arts Studio, Academic Center and many age-specific activities areas, the new Club will contain a teenonly Workforce Readiness Center with a Robotics & Makers Space, Technology & Digital Media Labs, a Sound Recording Studio, Career Bound and Academic Centers, a Culinary Teaching Kitchen and a Teen Lounge.

F O R WA R D ! Preparing for a Successful Future After High School T E E N S & Y O U N G A D U LT S : Choosing a Successful Path Forward

Historically, teens have been the most under-served population in the after-school space, but their needs persist. There are few, if any, choices in after-school and summer programming to help teens beat the odds. The Club is addressing this need by expanding teen programs and opening dedicated Workforce Readiness Centers to ensure teens graduate from high school with a plan for the future including post-secondary educational opportunities, a workforce certification program or the military. The Clubs’ teen programs, designed specifically for ages 13-18, provide meaningful experiences today so teens are ready to pursue their dreams tomorrow. Many incoming college students are unprepared for the rigor of college-level study and are then referred to remedial courses. Black, Hispanic and students of a low-income background are disproportionately placed into these courses. To prepare our youth for future success, the Clubs provide experiential workforce readiness and college readiness programming that introduces a myriad of career paths in high growth industries including healthcare, STEM, the construction trade and culinary arts.

The Boys & Girls Clubs teachers helped me through school, and now I will be the first member of my immediate family to graduate from high school. I never thought I was good enough to go to college, but Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County showed me I could. They showed me a bunch of options and when I graduate from college, – Joseph Brown I will be the first person in my family to do that, too.

Empowering Young People To help young people meet the workforce challenges of tomorrow, they need safe spaces, positive mentorship and work experiences today. At the Club, we allow kids and teens to explore their interests and passions, develop their employability skills and apply their knowledge to real-world work experiences. Our teen Club members are able to interact with industry professionals face-to-face during our monthly speaker series. This is an opportunity for them to hear from local business executives about their career paths, the obstacles they have overcome getting to where they are today in their career and how their company operates on a dayto-day basis. Teen members have had the chance to hear from Marci DePLaza (COO of GL Homes), Tim Leary & Chelsea Taylor (local radio show hosts from 103.1), Jason Kimbrell (CEO of HCA Florida Palms West Hospital), Larry Brush (Director of Sales for k12 Print) and so many more. Not only do our teen members get an opportunity to engage on a personal level with business professionals, but they receive behind-the-scenes tours of corporate and local businesses during the new Summer Career Tours. Field trips have included businesses such as The Scripps Research Institute, Palm Beach Aircraft Services, Best Buy, Nordstrom’s and the Solid Waste Authority. Because of the relationships and support of the local community, the Club has been able to match teen members with corporate partners for internship and apprenticeship opportunities that teach them the life skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century workforce. Teens learn how to build a resume, how to dress professionally and comport themselves in an interview, how to complete job tasks efficiently and effectively and the importance of showing up to work on time.

AN EXQUISITE 8,504-square-foot-villa under air with a total of 15,164 square feet, serves as the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse Palm Beach. 230 MIRAMAR WAY...the Villa Aura Miramar Way has the distinction of being the only serpentine street in West Palm Beach. The street’s lovely curve adds to the oversized lots’ unique shape. The street started as a private street that led East from Olive Avenue to the shore of Lake Worth Lagoon. Several private homes faced the Intracoastal Waterway. Only one of those homes is still standing. In the late 50s, the City expanded the drive next to the lake. Flagler Drive includes spectacular views of the West Palm Beach skyline, Lake Worth, and some of the high-end mansions on the Palm Beach side of the lake. Miramar Way was dead-ended at Flagler Drive and thus, provides no thru access from Flagler Drive. The first home built on 230 Miramar Way was a 1950’s suburban rambler; the house sat up from the drive and had a large front lawn facing North. In 2004, the late owner’s nephew sold the property to Allan Reyes and Tom Miller. Allan Reyes, an architectural and interior designer, decided the existing home could have used more of the large lot as the lot was 18,000 square feet. Also, since the existing house was one story, it did not take advantage of the winter ocean breezes, which a new home with a second floor could enjoy. The plans took shape with influences from Villas that Allan had visited in the South of France. The Villas were planned as idyllic retreats from the City. The most influential was the Villa Kerylos at Beaulieu-sur-Mer, a seaside commune on the French Riviera between Nice and the Principality of Monaco. When Allan Reyes started to do the architectural work for the Villa Aura, he was inspired by his many visits to the Villa Kerylos in the South of France. The distinctive fortress-like front was recreated, and the Villa’s most interesting interior feature was employed in the center-spaced Living Room design. The rooms are designed using “Enfilade,” or one room opening to another with a French Door as the focus. Front and back pool loggias are set into the building to protect the rooms facing the loggia. The Main Staircase has three landing areas before the second floor. A large Roof Terrace features a Pergola and several areas for entertaining. The Villa Aura sits on an almost 18,000-square-foot lot and is eleven feet above sea level. Streamline Moderne with Art Deco and Contemporary aesthetics influence the Villa’s overall design style. The first floor features 14-foot ceilings and an abundance of French Doors, allowing easy access to the Beautiful Florida Landscapes. The home’s construction is unique in using more than 4-foot deep concrete footers on which the main walls stand, all supporting a steel and concrete roofing system.
