Each one of these conversations was so unique and inspirational to me. I found myself asking many questions. What brought you here? What do you miss about your native country, what is the most difficult adjustment to being in a different culture…? The one thing that stands out to me the most after these conversations is that although there may be some differences between those from other countries and me, there are many more things about us that are the same. I think this fact is often forgotten. There are so many connections to be made with all different people of a variety of backgrounds. It is easy to

The technology inside of the MKZ hybrid is sure to not disappoint drivers - the features that come standard in this vehicle are not standard on most other luxury cars... The SmartGauge with EcoGuide technology provides real-time information to help drivers optimize fuel efficiency, coaching them on how to maximize the vehicle’s performance. The SmartGauge technology also gives drivers enhanced feedback on long-term fuel efficiency and driving performance through the growth of virtual flowers, inspired by apple blossoms. Both the standard and hybrid version of the car are equipped with Lincoln SYNC, an innovated technology that provides links to contacts and information, which can be linked to Bluetooth, audible text, and MP3 capabilities. This system also allows drivers to access Vehicle Health Reports and 911 Assist. The voice-recognition software, integrated GPS technology, and hands-free mobile phone systems make it easy for consumers to effortlessly access information while driving. The GPS system provides personalized traffic reports, turn by turn directions, and up to date business listings. The option to add a Blind Spot Information System allows drivers to access cross-traffic alerts which help detect cars approaching in driver’s blind spots. The 2012 models now offer the SYNC AppLink for the first time. This software allows the driver to voice-control smartphone applications through the vehicle. The stereo system inside of these cars is also a pretty impressive selling point. The Lincoln Premium Sound System features nine speakers, an auxiliary jack, and a pre-paid six month subscription to XM radio. Consumers can upgrade to the Lincoln TXH II certified Audio System with 5.1 surround sound - Lincoln is the only car maker in the world to offer this package. Rain-sensing windshield wipers are available as an upgrade - this feature, however, is standard on many other luxury hybrids. Power driver seats with memory settings, heated and cooled front seats, keyless entry keypads, and EasyFuel are all standard features on the 2012 MKZ models. The EasyFuel package is a capless fuel filler that is a Lincoln exclusive feature that uses an integrated spring loaded flapper door that eliminates the need to screw the fuel tank cap in place. The MKZ fleet is equipped with Personal Safety Systems that offer seven protection technologies that work in unison to protect the vehicle and it’s occupants. The AdvancTrac electronic stability control is designed to maintain steering control and directional stability in adverse driving conditions. And we can’t forget MyKey: another Lincoln-exclusive feature that allows drivers to limit speed and audio volume to encourage more responsible driving.

Bottom Line Overall, in our opinion at Clutch, the 2012 Lincoln MKZ hybrid surpasses all of its competition in the luxury hybrid market. The included features, incredible fuel economy, and relatively moderate price make the vehicle an easy choice

for

buyers looking to transition to a hybrid sedan. Did we mention the moderate price?

Three60 Something that consumers should be aware of when considering the Chevrolet Volt is that in order to maximize the MPG on the car, it should be plugged in on a frequent basis and allowed to charge until the battery is completely full. Most cities now are creating more and more charging stations but, with the exception of 2 states, there are less than 10 stations per state at this time. Most Smartphone application stores have free apps that will find these stations, so you can check availability in your state before purchasing the vehicle to be sure that you will not be affected by the current lack of

Zero to 60 The 2012 Volt, a sleek new plug-in hybrid from Chevy, is a feature-packed vehicle that boasts the ability to run on pure electric power up to 31 miles when the battery is at full capacity. The gas tank only holds 9.3 gallons, but if consumers can make the most of electric driving, this feature will seem obsolete. The 2012 Volt starts at an MSRP of $39,145, which is significantly higher than most hybrids on the market. Recently, the Obama administration announced a tax break of $7,500

to consumers who buy cars that have at least 16 kWh electric batteries. This is a wonderful deal for now, however purchasers should remember that the battery on the Volt will eventually need to be replaced, which is estimated to need to occur every five to eight years. The cost of the battery in this plug-in hybrid is about $10,000. This may be considered a bit of a drawback for those with financial concerns, but it may not be a problem for those of us who prefer to purchase a new vehicle around that time anyway.

stations. Although the vehicle can be run completely electric at all times, it is recommended that the car use one full tank of gas a year to maintain battery longevity and to keep the system in proper working order. Of course, the dual infotainment touchcreens offer users comprehensive information regarding battery life, when it should be charged, and more. The engine on the Volt is slightly more powerful than other hybrids on the market. With 149-hp average, it goes 0-60 in 9.2 seconds, and the extremely quiet

BMW ACTIVE HYBRID 750 WORLD’S FASTEST STREET-LEGAL HYBRID BY NATHAN DOWDY

In the new world of hybrid vehicles, where it seems like every company is trying to conquer the new frontier, it’s all about the latest development: and the BMW Active Hybrid 750 is no old man. The BMW Group’s newest addition to vehicles in the emission-free electric vehicle fleet, the BMW Active just hit the market in the fall of 2011. And it’s certainly equipped with the latest technology: the lithium-ion battery. As one of the first hybrid vehicles on the market to use this technology, the 750 boasts a battery that provides energy storage with low self-discharge and high energy density, which allows for maximum power and uncompromised performance. The battery’s smaller size allows for optimum storage, and drivers are still able to fit up to four bodies-I mean golf bags, for example, in the trunk. That doesn’t mean that it compromises on power, however: a glance under the hood tells us that the 4.4 liter V8 engine is turbocharged and produces 400 hp with 480-lb of torque - the vehicle has the highest horsepower out of any hybrid. Unfortunately, it also has the lowest MPG average. Eh, it’s a trade-off - you can’t win at everything. The active hybrid version of the BMW 750 starts at $6,000 above the most luxurious package of the standard vehicle, and the added MPG is small incentive to switch.

Three60: FOR THE TECHIES The Active 750 is equipped with a regenerative braking system that converts kinetic energy to usable electric energy, and an eight speed automatic transmission. TwinPower Turbo technology, High Precision Direct Injection, Four overhead camshafts, Double-VANOS variable valve timing, and electric motor create a platform for maximum performance in a hybrid vehicle. Multilink aluminum double-wishbone front suspension, integral-valuminum multi-link rear suspension, self-leveling air suspension, aluminum front and rear subframes, and twin-tube gas-pressure shock absorbers maintains the superior handling and control driver seek in a BMW. The extensive braking systems allow maximum control. Anti-Lock braking, Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Start-Off Assistant, Brake Drying, Dynamic Brake Control, 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with electronic brake proportioning are just some of the featured in this system.

WHERE LUXURY MEETS TECHNOLOGY There’s a place where the depth of luxury meets and mingles together with the height of technology. The 750 is parked dead center here, and this is why: each Active 750 is equipped with the BMW iDrive system. This high-tech ultra-enhanced control system allows driver to access information, entertainment, and comfort features. The 10.25 inch high-resolution display features intuitive controls for, radio, CD, auxiliary, telephone, and navigation. The integrated Hard Drive Disk offers consumers 12 GB of storage for importing music from CDs, MP3 players, and

“the 750 boasts a battery that provides energy storage with low self-discharge and high energy density, which allows for maximum power and uncompromised performance.” USB sticks. Partnering with Google, the ActiveHybrid 7 enables drivers to save time by sending a destination from the internet directly to their BMW before beginning a journey. The MyInfo system is constantly updated to allow drivers to upload business listings, street addresses, and phone numbers into an on-board directory. Google maps can be searched from within the vehicle using the BMW Assist Convenience Plan. Consumers can also add a rear seat-integrated multimedia system complete with vibration-resistant display and wireless headphones. All of these features allow the driver to stay focused on the road, and the iDrive system comes standard with BMW Assist

visible and illuminated driving experience. Like most luxury sedans, the Active 750 has rain-sensing windshield wipers, heated seats that are power adjustable, exterior door handle lights, garage door opener, and keyless entry. This vehicle has the touch screen control system with navigation, Bluetooth, and climate control. Features that aren’t included on most luxury hybrids are an infrared windshield, electric analog speedometer, and climate comfort laminated glass.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The BMW ActiveHybrid 750 is certainly a sleek, beautiful vehicle - that should go without saying: it’s a BMW. The technology is incredible. But is the price and lower fuel economy worth the capabilities? That’s a decision that only you can make. As for us at Clutch Auto Mag: well, we’d drive one - at least till the technology grows outdated.

It’s recent addition to the trophy shelf comes from AutoClub, where in 2011 it was named one of the top 5 green cars on the market. It’s the Lexus LS 600h - and simply put, it can turn many a head. Packed with accessories, it redefines luxury, and boasts many exhorbitant and wonderful features, such as the Driver Attention Monitor System, the Advanced Pre-Collision System with Lane Keep Assist, and climate-control. (see below) The standard model comes equipped with all-wheel drive, advanced parking guidance system, and an interior with HDD Navigation with Mark Levinson Audio Systems. Let’s dive a little deeper...

Three60: DOWN TO THE DETAILS A truly unique powertrain system inside the LS 600h uses a 5.0 liter V8 engine with two electric motors and a large-capacity battery pack. This model is still a full hybrid and allows drivers to operate in electric-only mode. Like most hybrids, the LS 600h contains a regenerative breaking system, complete with eight-speed sequential braking mode. All-wheel drive allows the car to adapt to road surface conditions and driver control. Drivers also have the option to toggle between driving modes, such as, Hybrid, Power, or Snow. The power mode

A standard eight airbags, with an optional eleven allow for maximum safety. Also, the world’s first low-beam LED headlamps provide exceptional road illumination. There are also several optional safety features that are worth mentioning. The Advanced PreCollision System is another world’s first for Lexus. This system was debuted in 2009 and was implemented to react to pedestrians in the vehicles path and comes with Lane Keep Assist. Using two cameras that work with a millimeterwave radar, the pre-collision system is designed to detect nonmetallic objects. 2012 FISKER KARMA A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

Zero to 60: GOOD KARMA

In the world of luxury cars, the Fiskar Karma stands out: breaking new ground as the world’s first premium hybrid electric vehicle. It’s been unleashed to us by idealists Henrik Fisker and Bernhard Koehler of Fisker Automotive, an American car company that dreamed of designing something unheard of on the current market. And it seems that their dreams have become reality. Inspired by hybrid technology developed for the US military, the vehicle comes equiped with refined interior wood, the largest solar glass roof ever designed for a production vehicle, Bi-Xenon head lamps, low energy LED lamps, a revolutionary touch screen interface, and 22” Circuit Blade wheels. The built-in command center is a touch screen display complete with navigation, Bluetooth, iPod, and climate control systems. The Signature Fisker exterior sound is also standard on all models. Each Karma is equipped with 4-wheel independent suspension with SLA architecture, front and rear aluminum control arms and stabilizing bars, auto dimming read and side view mirrors, 6 way power front seats with lumbar adjustments and memory capabilities, keyless ignition, push button start, ABS and panic brake assist, TSC and ESC. A torque of 959feet/lbs, rear wheel drive, and dual electric traction motors make the vehicle easy to maneuver. It also allows drivers to control EVer power (see below),

STARTING MSRP $102,000–$116,000 central locking, hazard lights, and an electronic glove box release. The 22” Circuit Blade wheels are surrounded by Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. These wheels are powder coated to ensure a lasting finish and reduce VOC emissions. The brakes on the Karma are a standard racing design complete with Brembo Monobloc calipers. This braking system helps capture kinetic energy during deceleration. This allows drivers to have more control over the driving experience and electric range. The lightweight design allows the car to have a low center of gravity to provide superior performance and handling. The Karma has the ability to toggle between Sport Mode, which is fuel assisted, and Stealth Mode, which runs completely on electric power. The power and performance of the vehicle were not compromised in the creation of an environmentally friendly luxury vehicle. The car can travel 0 – 60 in 6.3 seconds and still releases just 83g/ km CO2 emissions annually. It has top speeds of 150mph with a 2.0 liter 260hp 4-cylinder direct injection motor. It goes without saying that Fisker Automotive has succeeded in creating their magnum opus, a true wonder of design, functionality, performance, and luxury, while maintaining the company’s commitment to the environment. Let’s dive a little deeper...

403-HP (ELECTRIC) Three60: AN UNWAVERING PASSION FOR PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT Henrik Fisker and Bernhard Koehler, in founding Fisker Automotive in 2007, have done much more than just creating 700+ jobs for the American economy: They have set the standard for environmental conservation. Their passion for creating a more environmentally friendly economy has led them to design vehicles unsurpassed in performance, design, and ingenuity, and the Karma is no exception: it comes equiped with Fisker’s own patented electric technology, the EVer System. This system uses an electric generator and battery pack to power the dual electric motors, giving the car up to 50 miles of electric driving when fully charged. After these 50 miles, the internal combustion gasoline engine takes control to support the electric motors for another 250 miles. The car is equipped with a standard 110V charger, but use of the optional 220/240V charging can lower the amount of time needed to charge the vehicle. The car takes between 6 to 14 hours to fully charge, which is no problem for most commuters - hey, you have to sleep sometime, may as well charge your car during that time. The battery in the Karma is a Nanophosphate

Lithium-Ion battery pack, which is built with advanced technology that allows for a very large SoC platform, and provides a lifecycle of 10 years or 100,000 miles under normal use, leaving behind in the dust most plug-in hybrid batteries, as they only have an anticipated lifespan of 5 to 8 years. The Diamond Dust paint on the Karma is the first water-based paint that engages a recycled glass mixture that uses 35-55% recycled glass while releasing zero VOC emissions. The invisible reflective infrared layer of the paint helps keep the interior temperature of the car more moderate during hot summer months. The interior of the car is furnished with several different options; the Ecostandard option, which is a deep black that emulates pure grain leather and then the Ecosport package, which uses leather from the world’s first closed-loop leather manufacturing plant. This plant abides by Five Freedoms of Humane Animal Treatment regulations and uses around 85% of the hide. The last package is the Ecochic, which provides the most eco-friendly and luxurious option. The premium Ecosuede features 100% post-industry virgin textiles. The massive solar powered roof can transform solar energy to an extra 200 miles per year. The lights used in the Karma are all low energy lamps and conserve as much power as possible. The interior wood detailing comes entirely from fallen, sunken, and rescued wood. The fallen wood is reclaimed from fallen trees in the Western United States, the sunken wood from the bottom of Lake Michigan, and the rescued wood is recovered from California wildfires.

A STRONG COMMITMENT TO SAFETY Safety has been a big concern for hybrid cars. The Spaceframe of the Karma is constructed with front-end collision reinforcements that are paired with energy absorbing materials at major collision points around the vehicle. Spaceframe is comprised of interlocking struts laid out in a geometric pattern with energy-absorbing aluminum beams. The car is equipped with eight air bags and a premier braking system for superior stopping capabilities. In the event of a collision, the onboard system of the Karma triggers key safety response actions, like shutting down the battery power and fuel pump system. The doors automatically unlock, and the hazard and interior lights are instantly turned on. The Karma exceeds global crash protection standards.

A COMPREHENSIVE EXPERIENCE, AND A DRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE Danish-born designer Henrik Fisker is no stranger to designing luxury cars; his previous roles in the automotive world consist of designing for BMW and Aston Martin. Bernhard Koehler was also busy working with BMW and Designworks USA before joining Fisker in his pursuit of their dreams. Their experience and comprehenisive knowledge and design savvy has not gone unnoticed, and is impressing those with influence in the industry. The look and design of the Karma are unsurpassed by any other hybrid on the market. In addition to the sporty look, the features of this vehicle make it the best hybrid on the market - car critics across the world agree. BBC Top Gear Magazine named the Fisker Karma the top luxury car of 2011. Automobile magazine awarded Karma the Design of the Year.

THE BOTTOM LINE: The Fisker logo represents the “horizon”. Depicting a California sunset, it pays homage to the company’s Southern California roots. It was designed to celebrate the innovation, freedom, and uncomplicated living associated with that region. The line where the sky and the ocean meet is used to symbolize the joining of this “unique lifestyle with a necessary concern for the environment.” The two vertical bars represent the two founders; the designer’s pen for Fisker and the creator’s tool for Koehler. Is this emblem a precursor to what’s coming soon from Fisker? We at Clutch Auto Magazine think so, and the example is clear: the Karma is a force to be reckoned with.

Chance To Win And Save Lives FASHION FOR LIFE: GUCCI 500 When you think of ways that automotive manufacturers incorporate style and fashion into their vehicles, there are numerous aspects that can come to mind. Most people would point out the exterior body contours, the dashboard’s sleekness, or the look and feel of the seats. These characteristics clearly display style, but do they really express fashion? Fashion is part of each person’s everyday life. Coincidentally enough, for most people, so is driving. This mindset is one of the main reasons that Gucci and Fiat collaborated to create the 500 by Gucci. It is also one of the reasons that Clutch Auto Mag chose the Fiat 500 by Gucci as a staple for 2012. This celebration of Italian design is also helping celebrate the launch of Clutch and the partnerships that have been built to benefit charity. Throughout this year, the limited edition vehicle will be headlining our marketing campaign across the region, while showcasing multiple aspects of the Carolina lifestyle.

“To help the organization accomplish their goals, Clutch is promoting the raffle online at www.fiatraffle. com and placing the vehicle on display throughout the region.”

The team at Clutch has partnered with CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, Stateline Fiat, and Virginia International Raceway to raffle a Fiat 500 Cabrio by Gucci to one lucky winner. The goals of approaching both companies earlier this year were to involve the community and support a cause that everyone should believe in. CureSearch directs all of their resources and effort toward finding cures for different types of cancer that affect children. To help the organization accomplish their goals, Clutch is promoting the raffle online at www.fiatraffle.com and placing the vehicle on display throughout the region. Whether you are out to eat, attending an event, shopping, or simply wandering around, there is a possibility that you may cross paths with the 500 by Gucci and the opportunity to help save lives.

500 WINS AWARD EXCLUSIVE DESIGN ELEMENTS STYLISH AND FUNCTIONAL INTERIOR PREMIUM AMENITIES

Fiat 500 Cabrio by Gucci Awarded “Best Small Convertible of the Year” at SAMA Convertible Drive The Fiat 500 Cabrio by Gucci won “Best Small Convertible of the Year” at the “Topless in Miami” event held on June 14 by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA). With exclusive design elements, stylish and functional interior, premium amenities and Gucci insignia, the Fiat 500c by Gucci made itself impossible to ignore by the more than 60 journalists attending this annual event. “We are honored by SAMA’s recognition, particularly because SAMA members really know everything about cabrios,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of FIAT Brand North America. “By partnering with Gucci, we brought something truly unique into the marketplace, demonstrating that exquisite Italian style, features and technology could convene in a small-car formula. Proof of this success is that we have almost immediately sold out every single model of this special edition.” Since its debut during New York Fashion Week (Sept. 8-15), the 2012 Fiat 500 by Gucci has fascinated auto enthusiasts and fashionistas alike. Inspired by neo-classical black-and-white films, the Fiat 500 and 500c by Gucci models are finished in eye-catching pearl-gloss paint. The Black model, with detailing in polished chrome paired with an interior that contrasts sharp black against white, presents a contemporary and racy attitude. The White model, with satin chrome detailing and an ivory and black interior palette, offers a softer, sophisticated look. Both models feature signature Gucci details including, chromed cursive “Gucci” exterior badges, interlocking “GG” hubcaps, two-toned seats with “Guccissima” print and unmistakable Gucci green/red/green web striped seat belts. “We are glad that FIAT brand is present for a second year at our Topless in Miami event,” said Jaime Florez, President of SAMA. “We had very strong competitors this year, and the Fiat 500c by Gucci captured the judges’ votes by showcasing how chic style and personal transportation can go hand in hand in a formula that only Italy could create.”

About the Fiat 500 and 500c by Gucci The exclusive Fiat 500 by Gucci models feature several exclusive design elements that highlight the Fiat 500’s iconic silhouette. A signature Gucci green/red/green web stripe runs along the entire bodyside perimeter on the Fiat 500 by Gucci, or across the length of the power-retractable cloth top on the Fiat 500c by Gucci model. Chrome cursive “Gucci” signatures complete the door frames and hatchback, complementing the satin-chrome exterior accents, such as mirrors, door handles and hood spear, which are highlighted in signature diamond black or diamond white pearl-gloss paint. Adding to the vehicle’s sculpted fenders are uniquely designed, retro-inspired 15-inch aluminum wheels with interlocking “GG” hubcaps and brake pads, which have been lacquered in signature Gucci green. The interior space of the Fiat 500 by Gucci is stylish, yet functional, down to every last detail: chic embroidery, exclusive materials, glossy and satin chromes, the velvety varnish on the “radioboard,” and the two-toned seats in leather with Guccissima

NASCAR’S MOST

CHARITABLE It is respectfully noted that most Nascar drivers have their own charity or charity work they are involved in. With Nascar being the longest running sport each year, the drivers and in some cases, the racing team owners, go the extra mile to encompass charitable causes, along with traveling extensively and maintaining families. We are highlighting the top charitable Nascar individuals to honor them as well as educate others on these worthwhile charities.

Ryan and his wife, Krissie, founded the Ryan Newman Foundation in 2005. Their mission is to encourage people to spay and neuter their pets and to adopt pets from shelters, to educate young and old to preserve our beautiful outdoors as to

be enjoyed by future generations, and to offer scholarships to those that aspire to have auto racing careers. February 8, 2012, ground was broke for their new 87 acre non-profit facility, the Rescue Ranch. Offices, classrooms, boarding facilities, a veterinary clinic, horse stalls and pastures, and educational camps will all be available here. The passion the Newmans have for this cause has driven this idea to a dream come true for them. “Building a rescue facility has been something I’ve wanted to do for some time”, says Krissie. Their dedication and devotion is exactly why they are one of Clutch Auto Mag’s top charitable Nascar drivers.

Proceeds originally went to numerous children’s hospitals. But since Adam Petty’s fatal crash in 2004, much of the ride’s donation money goes to support Victory Junction, as many ride in Adam’s memory. Giving a child, with such serious health problems which dominate so much of their lives, a chance to smile, laugh, and be a “kid” for a short time is priceless. And when you do what you do, in honor of someone you love, it makes that cause so much more worthwhile and will reap fruitful benefits.

in America – serious injury – along with recovery, education, and prevention. To show the commitment of Childress, when, in 2011, he was fined a hefty amount by Nascar for an incident, the money fans sent to help him pay it never actually went to the fine. Childress paid that penalty himself and chose to use all the money from these fans to go straight to the Institute. With a man having as much going as he does, and to still impact so many people’s lives through charity, we had to include Richard Childress in our most charitable Nascar personalities.

The anticipated results from these projects are expected to take place over the next five years. You can find information and videos on all of Chevrolet’s current projects online at www. chevycarbonreduction.com “Now that we’re committed to 16 diversified projects, we are fortified in our support of community-based, carbon-reduction initiatives,” said Chris Perry, Vice President of Chevrolet Global Marketing and Strategy. “It’s fulfilling to back organizations working towards building a cleaner, more-secure energy future.”

TOP 5 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME’S EFFICIENCY

BY ALLISON ARPIN, HOME PERFORMANCE COORDINATOR AT SOUTHERN ENERGY MANAGEMENT

1.

Duct Sealing

This is often one of the most cost-effective energy improvements you can make. Duct systems distribute conditioned air through a maze-like system that snakes through walls, floors, crawlspaces, basements, attics and other areas. These duct systems have seams at every connection, and if these seams aren’t sealed, there’s a very good chance that conditioned air is escaping into places you’d rather not spend money to heat or cool. Air in a duct moves a lot like water in a pipe; if there are holes — even small ones — air will leak out. Typical older houses may have tape at the duct connections, which fails as a sealant over the years. Those homes can lose 20 percent or more of their conditioned air leaking from the duct system alone. Fixing this, though somewhat simple and cost effective, can be a not-so-fun do-it-yourself job. The good news is that the only material you need is a water-based mastic (a thick paste commonly used in construction as a sealer) to spread at the duct connections. The bad news is mastic can be messy. It’s a very goopy material and it doesn’t easily come out of hair or clothing (trust me…I know). The other issue is that many people don’t know exactly where those seams are — and don’t particularly enjoy maneuvering around their crawlspace or attic trying to apply this stuff. So while it can be a do-it-yourself job, many people who get started probably wonder exactly what they’ve gotten into.

2.

Attic Air Sealing

Many attics tend to be really hot in the summer and more than a little chilly in the winter — and there are all sorts of ways that air can get into and out of that unconditioned space to your home. Plumbing and electrical penetrations, chases from fireplaces, ductwork and top plates (where walls meet the ceiling) are all potential culprits. The best way to keep conditioned air in the house where you want it is to close up all these holes using caulk or an expanding foam sealant. Some of those penetrations are easy to find, but many require a trained eye after pulling up attic insulation. Special air leakage testing tools, like the blower door, are also helpful for identifying hard-to-find holes where air is getting in or out. But it’s worth the effort; getting those air penetrations sealed can have a huge effect on the energy efficiency and comfort of your home.

3.

Attic Insulation

4.

Crawlspace Air Sealing

5.

Crawlspace Vapor Barrier and/or Sealed Crawlspace

Just because air can’t move from one place to another doesn’t mean that heat can’t. So even if you’ve air sealed the attic, it can still be a place that transfers temperature to and from the living areas of the house by conduction. Insulation can be an odd substance — if it’s compacted, distributed unevenly or doesn’t touch the material it is insulating, it loses effectiveness quickly. Making sure your insulation is installed properly can be a big deal. The other thing that can be tough to gauge is the proper amount of insulation to use. This often depends on the type of insulation and how and where it’s installed. Using this information, experts can figure out the R-Value — a measurement of thermal resistance — of the insulation in the attic. R-Value can be complicated, but essentially the higher the R-Value, the longer it takes for heat to move through a material. Many older houses don’t even come close to the amount of insulation recommended by the EPA for their climate.

Just like in the attic, there’s a lot of potential air leakage under your feet. Plumbing and electrical penetrations allow crawlspace air to find its way into the house. This unconditioned air is usually unhealthier for you than attic air; it’s so close to the ground that it’s often stagnant and damp. If anyone in your family has asthma, crawlspace air may be a contributer. The fix is about the same as air-sealing the attic — sealing penetrations with caulk or an expanding foam sealant — but this time it’s down in the crawlspace where a lot of homeowners never venture.

This is usually the best fix for people with mold issues. “Why is my crawlspace wet?” might be the number one question we get, and the simple answer is that moisture wicks through the soil. Just because the ground under your home is sheltered from the elements above doesn’t mean that water isn’t getting in laterally. There are two levels of improvements to reduce moisture in your crawlspace. A vapor barrier is essentially plastic sheeting that is installed on top of the soil floor from one end of the house to the other; it’s designed to block moisture from coming up from the ground and causing mold growth. Another option is sealing the entire crawlspace, which is a lot more work. In a sealed crawlspace, laying a vapor barrier is just the first step. After that, the vents in the crawlspaces are closed, the walls of the crawlspace are insulated with a rigid foam, and an air supply is added to make the space more conditioned and to control the humidity level. This approach can make a world of difference for some of the worst crawlspaces, and turn them into a place that doesn’t make the people living above sick. So there you have my top five. There are many other ways that people can make their homes more comfortable, healthier, and energy efficient — but if you had to pick the low-hanging fruit, this list would be a good place to start.

SOCIAL LUBRICANTS CIGARS & WINE PRESENTED BY DON LONGO CIGARS

S

atellite Cigar is owned and operated by Bob Hammel in Concord, NC, retailing premium hand rolled cigars and accessories through events such as weddings, business functions, gatherings of family & friends, local delivery service, and a developing home, cigar party system. Frustrated by driving into surrounding counties to buy a good smoke with gas prices through the roof, and overwhelmed with the multitude of choices from the online world of cigar retail, Bob felt there was a niche in the local market that needed attention. The challenge then became how to sell cigars and accessories without a store front or online business model. The process was slow but the plan started to come together. Instead of customers going to a cigar store why not bring the store to the customer? Thus, a mobile, traveling or “satellite” humidor service was created. The “home based mobile cigar retail system,” as Bob calls it, seemed to be a good fit. This offers affordable, flexible options for larger events and a ten dollar minimum order for local delivery service. All this brings the simple elegance of cigars, to more people for less, without sacrificing service.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your passion/relation with cigars.

Answer: Cigars have not always been a passion or obsession for me until several years ago when I picked up the pleasant aroma of a cigar while on vacation in Myrtle Beach and decided to try a premium hand rolled brand for the first time. Having no experience with cigars, I remember going into the retailers shop feeling completely overwhelmed with all the different cigars available. So many brands, sizes, shapes and colors to choose from, it made my head spin but of course I had to act cool under pressure to make it seem like I knew what I was talking about. It didn’t take long for the gentleman working at the store to pick up on my lack of knowledge. It must have been a combination of body language and the “deer in the head lights look” in my eyes that blew my cover. He was nice enough to make a few suggestions for me to purchase so I paid the bill, tucked my tail between my legs and hauled ass out of there. This is where my journey began, humble beginnings to say the least. To learn more about cigars I bought a couple of books which helped me become familiar with terminology, tools, and the process of cigar making, from tobacco plant seed to the finished product on the store shelf. The more I learned the more fascinated I became. With this new growing knowledge, I was eager to visit a local retailer to buy a few more cigars. Unfortunately I had to drive thirty minutes, one way to find a brick & mortar shop specializing in premium hand rolled cigars. Time and gas prices going up made this very frustrating for me. Out of this dilemma the concept for Satellite Cigar was developed.

Q: Do you recall your first smoke and it’s memories?

Answer: After leaving the store in Myrtle Beach we made it back to the apartment so I decided it was time to try one of my stogies. After multiple attempts to shield the cigar from the wind and a few choice words, I was finally smoking my first premium hand rolled cigar. It took me ten minutes to lite the cigar but I was in business as they say and I probably entertained some of the neighbors in the process. Looking back I now realize the cigars I bought in a sampler pack were medium to full bodied intended for the more experienced smoker. I can only think of one description for the flavor, it was like the taste of eating burnt toast and to top it off a queasy feeling settled into my stomach that eventually went away.

Q: How do you recommend a first time smoker select the right cigar?

Answer: Making a comparison to wine, it is generally recommended to begin with a sweet wine and work your way up to the drier wines according to your taste preferences. Cigars have a similar process starting out with a mild body or flavor and over time working up to the medium to full range of body. Filler tobacco is the main part or the center portion of the cigar that gives it most of it’s flavor. It is also important to note that cigars are often blended with filler tobacco from various countries each providing a unique flavor characteristic. You may find a mild cigar with filler tobacco from one particular country more appealing than another. It is a journey that takes some time and patience.

Q: How do you go about pairing a good cigar with the right drink?

Answer: Experimenting with different drinks that will compliment your cigar is the only way to nail down what gives you a good balance between the two. This is a very personal choice that will offer benefits with moderation. What works for me? My favorite drink with a good cigar is a glass of Merlot. Somehow this combination helps relive stress, allows me time to think for general problem solving, and it gets the creative juices flowing.

Q: Tell us more about cigars and Women.

Answer: One goal for 2012 is to develop a cigar home party system for guys and just for the ladies as well. Lit Lifestyle Magazine is a new publication dedicated to the women cigar smoker which gives us all a wake up call to the growing number of

female smokers. This market should not be ignored by retailers as it will take time to learn what they are looking for in a cigar and accessories. We are very exited about the possibilities.

Q: Which cigars do you recommend to our reader and why

Answer: We have all heard the expression you get what you pay for. This is true for the cigar world too. That is why we offer name brands such as: Arturo Fuente, H. Upmann, Macanudo, Oliva, Punch, Rocky Patel and more because they have high quality standards that allow for a better product. From the farmers care, to aging and final production at the rollers table, these and many other brands provide consistent quality for our enjoyment. You can expect to pay four dollars and up for a premium hand made cigar depending on the size and availability of that particular smoke.

Q: How can you be contacted?

their event.

Q: Do You have any favorite lounges?

Answer: Not one favorite but I have been to a couple of the cigar stores in Charlotte. I have enjoyed each business and look forward to visiting the others retailers.

Q: How are your prices compared to the online guys and B&M’s

Answer: We want to be very competitive with both so our prices are somewhere in between them in most cases. The great thing about our service is that you don’t have to go anywhere if you don’t want to, and you won’t spend as much for local delivery as you would for shipping to have your smokes sooner and in great condition. We not trying to reinvent the wheel just make it roll a little smoother!

Q: Do you work with private labels to offer to your customers?

Answer: At this point in time we have not located a source for private label cigars that meets our quality standards. If our name is associated with any cigar or service we want to be sure it is top of the line for our customers so there are no distractions to take away from
