Welcome to Gunnedah Shire Gunnedah Shire, in north-west New South Wales, is loved for many reasons.

It is known as the Koala Capital of the World, the home of the biggest agricultural field days in Australia, the site of magnificent murals, and a beautiful place to visit. Gunnedah continues to hold a special place in its heart for the men and women who have served in conflict - and there have been many of them. There are permanent tributes throughout the Shire, from the Gunnedah Memorial Pool, built as a war memorial, to the Water Tower murals that commemorate the Vietnam War. The village of Tambar Springs is also home to what is believed to be the first memorial to World War 1 servicemen erected in New South Wales, and possibly Australia. The memorial dates back to December 1918 and is made from Italian marble. Gunnedah is not just a stopover, it is a destination. It is the land of the Red Chief, a Shire where creative small businesses thrive, a town young people come home to and then stay to raise a family, a place where farmers and miners meet. It is a hub for people who love the land, but also want great opportunities for their business and their families. Gunnedah is located in north-west New South Wales, an hour from Tamworth and at the heart of many journeys. The Namoi River flows through the Shire, providing a beautiful setting for everything from Australia Day citizenship ceremonies to impromptu summer picnics. The township of Gunnedah is the centre of a sprinkling of small villages offering country hospitality and magnificent scenery. With a wide choice of accommodation, it is a great place to stay and spend a few days, visiting the giant silo mural of poet Dorothea Mackellar and the Vietnam War mural at the Water Tower Museum, seeing the canola in flower, bushwalking, fishing and shopping. On the fringes of Gunnedah Shire is Lake Keepit, which is nearly the size of Sydney Harbour and home to a huge range of activities.
