Braces designed and made by Naoise Photo: Kirstyn Byrne

future in fashion NAOISE FARRELL, 20 AS TOLD TO KIRSTYN BYRNE

Naoise Farrell is a second year fashion student at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD). Some people go to college because their parents want them to, Naoise went because she had no alternative. It was fashion or nothing. In a corridor where the temperature never drops below 40°C, the second year fashion students spend their twelve-hour day slaving away. Poor ventilation, artificial lighting and a balmy climate seem to be the ideal conditions for inspiring their designs. Naoise is an eccentric person, yet her designs are intriguingly logical and in a way, practical, ‘I like to create a problem for something that you wouldn’t necessarily have to fix and then I like to go through the process of overcoming that problem in many different ways, unravel it.’ Her life is hectic but her world is organised, ‘My workspace in fashion is like my room at home. I have to know where all of my things are all the time. Hannah Choy will tell you, it’s really OCD.’ Naoise has determination and passion. She has adapted to the Fashion environment very well but at times the atmosphere gets to her and she becomes exasperated! The course is demanding because it needs to prepare its students for the real world. Naoise spends a nine to nine day in Fashion and sometimes an eight to nine day. She must really love it because the only complaint she can think of is ‘I barely have any time to be fashionable!’ There are creative genes in Naoise’s immediate family, ‘I come from an open-minded family. My mum is an interior designer … and my dad is an architect.’ She became interested in Fashion at a young age and set her heart on NCAD. When asked to give advice to young people who want to get into art college Naoise shouts ‘Just do it!’ She describes the college as ‘a different world compared to the rest of the country.’ I assume that NCAD is the best-dressed college but Naoise disagrees, ‘No I’d say Trinity to be honest, they have the money.’ She recollects reluctantly a fashion faux pas she once had there, ‘One day I wore a gypsy skirt to the Pav in Trinity.’ There are certain questions about fashion and style that everyone wants to know the answer to. So I ask Naoise why do so many creative people wear black all the time? Naoise reckons ‘it’s the opposite of being stylish so therefore it is stylish … it’s so plain that it’s just fashionable.’ What about the notorious black and navy combination, is it ok sometimes? ‘Yeah like when you’re wearing a black Gap jumper and navy O’Neill’s then you’re ok, definitely.’

DOT & CROSS / 003

I LIKE GIRLS WHO DRESS MODESTLY. I THINK IT’S REALLY CUTE BUT I DON’T REALLY HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY ABOUT BOYS BECAUSE THEY DON’T MAKE AN EFFORT WITH CLOTHES.

DOT & CROSS Perhaps that’s her more sarcastic side shining through. Fashion students have a knack for telling the future, I enquire about summer trends, ‘midriff and scrunchies, that’s my summer anyway.’ I comment that a lot of celebrities have turned their hands to fashion design creating their own labels, can anyone do it? ‘Kanye can.’ I had the likes of Victoria Beckham in mind, she’s right though — Kanye West now has a clothing line! I ask Naoise if she has any wardrobe staples and according to her, ‘a good coat all the time. Lots of them. They are so important.’ Of course, it must be difficult to adapt back to the freezing Irish climate every time she steps out of that sweatshop. Another question that I’m eager to have answered is what style mistakes do Irish girls make? Naoise puts it bluntly, ‘Too much Ugg, too much make-up, panda eyes. Leggings, bum.’ When I express that people who are not used to fashion can find it very intimidating, Naoise says ‘no I feel like everyone should just be happy. Everyone should be comfortable in themselves and I like girls who dress modestly. I think it’s really cute but I don’t really have anything to say about boys because they don’t make an effort with clothes.’ No praise for the men, until they make an effort.Does Naoise often get asked style advice from friends and family? ‘Autographs?’ Style advice. ‘Oh ha ha ha! Yeah people just think that seeing as I’m doing fashion I’d know what would suit them but really I have no idea about that, pear shape apple shape.’ When the interview is over, Naoise wants to add a question. So she asks herself what would you be if you weren’t going to be a fashion designer? ‘I would be really interested in going into the music business. I’m quite interested in rap. It’s really sad that no one’s ever going to know that, how good I am. My mum just told me the other day how good I am.’ Naoise’s love of rap music only serves as a soundtrack to her design but she is making things happen for herself in the Dublin design scene. You can call her ‘Fashionaoise.’ • + •

Designer – Adrian Frutiger Release Date – 1976

Adrian Frutiger designed a sans-serif typeface called Roissy around 1968. It was named after the Charles De Gaulle airport where this font was used for the signage. The font family was publicly released as Frutiger in 1976. The availability of many variants and weights as well as its excellent legibility make Frutiger a very versatile font. It holds potential for anything that needs a distinct, clean or modern look. Frutiger is one of Linotype’s best selling fonts. It is effective as display type and popular for body text in magazines. The Frutiger family is neither strictly geometric nor humanistic in its construction. Its forms are designed so that each individual character is quickly and easily recognised.
