W

ith close to 9000 students, London College of Communication is the largest of the six colleges that make up the University of the Arts London. In one form or another the College dates back to 1883 but it was in 1960 that it moved to its purpose-built site in Elephant & Castle.

Many people say the best thing about Elephant & Castle is that you can go almost anywhere from there, in fact it was once known as ‘The Piccadilly of the South’.

With two tube stations serving the Northern and Bakerloo lines, bus stops lining almost every road, an overground station served by Thameslink and Southeastern trains, along with major transport terminals such as Waterloo within walking distance, getting out of Elephant and Castle is easy.

But why would you want to do that? It’s easy to dismiss Elephant & Castle as a concrete jungle - it’s not the most salubrious of addresses, essentially a roundabout with a bizarre shopping centre, surrounded by tower blocks that have seen better days.

However, look a little closer and there are some secret gems to be found. Elephant & Castle isn’t all bad and this little guide aims to prove that - helping you to find some of its redeeming features.

Shopping The hub of Elephant & Castle’s shopping lies in and around the shopping centre.

In the market outside the shopping centre, which is open Mon-Sat, 7am-7pm, you can pick up anything and everything; from jackets with Tony Montana airbrushed on the back, to gloves, and exotic food. If you keep your eyes open, there are always very good cheap basics on the stalls e.g. good quality plain T-shirts for £2 Within the shopping centre, on the ground floor, chain stores such as Tesco, Greggs, Iceland, WHSmith, Woolworths, Superdrug, Boots and Peacocks can be found. Where as an eclectic mix of small stores and restaurants make the first floor a really lively cultural centre. TLÖN Books, on the ground floor is a secondhand book shops that is well worth a look, and they will exchange your old books. Also on the ground floor is a discount household shop which has all kinds of useful stuff like plug adaptors, oddball gems like a strange illuminated tree made out of gaffer tape and cheap fairy flights.

Walworth Road, which extends from the south roundabout towards Camberwell, offers all the normal high street shops and amenities (Banks, Post Office etc). But there are also some more interesting charity and second-hand shops that are well worth the visit, especially the army surplus store.
