MY SUMMER TREAT: BERRY PICKING This issue is dedicated to filling your summer kit with activities, simple home projects, beauty and inspiration. One of my personal all-time favorite things to do in the summer is to pick berries at Spencer Farm. If you’ve never been to this Noblesville landmark before, you don’t know what you’re missing. There’s nothing quite like picking fresh strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, rhubarb and asparagus by hand, and then taking your harvest home to enjoy a lovely, local meal. The beautifully groomed fields at Spencer Farm make picking your produce so enjoyable, it’s more fun than it is work. The farm also mans an adorable country store that makes me feel like I’ve stepped back in time. Friendly employees weigh your berries outside on old-fashioned scales; indoors, it’s impossible to resist the counter overflowing with homemade fudge. If you’re bringing kids along, you can reward them for their picking efforts with an ice cream cone afterward. Like doing puzzles or kicking back with a good book, picking strawberries is like therapy for me. It takes my mind off all those little everyday stresses and allows me to simply relax. I started a strawberry-picking tradition with my kids when they were little, and even though they’re now 21 and 18, they still enjoy our trips to the farm as much as I do. I try to get there as many times as I can during the season, knowing that when it’s over, I’ll have to wait a whole year before I get to do it again. (You can imagine how much I’m craving those berries come spring.) Savor these long, hot days. Take One The name started as a joke. A group of women were training for Dances With Dirt, an all-day backwoods trail relay race in southern Indiana, all while holding down careers, tending to families and without sacrificing their social time. People wore costumes for the race, and these women were going as starlets. But then they realized the camera was already rolling on their own life stories. “We said we wanted to dress as movie stars, and it spun off that,” says Holly Wheeler, a Carmel ultra runner, cyclist, teacher, mother of three and Team Film co-founder. “Team Film is about women living the life they want to live— today. If someone were to make a movie of your life story, right now, you wouldn’t hold back. You’d be living your film.”
For years, the group had been running, biking, hiking and even going on vacations together. They realized making time for themselves was making them stronger, more balanced and happier, and that sharing that lifestyle with other women would be an exciting next challenge. And so, Team Film LLC was born, founded in 2013 by 12 women scattered across the country in San Francisco, Denver and North Carolina, with its home base in central Indiana. Team Film’s objective is to support women who want to “live their film” by connecting them to each other and offering members perks from businesses that can help them live an exciting, active life. The group’s membership ranges from women in their 20s to 60s. Anyone and everyone is welcome, and you don’t have to be an experienced athlete.
The long-term vision for Team Film is to be a catalyst to get women across the country to take on tough challenges, build connections with each other and have fun doing it. Women who stick to roads and treadmills can get outside their usual routines and take a spin on a nearby trail. Grab a friend and head to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve in Fishers.
“Being a member means you’re living the life you want,” Holly says. “Whether you’re going to do yoga once a week or training to run your first 5K race. Yes, we have some total badasses who are Ironman finishers. But we are here to support different goals—baby steps and big steps.”
Lights, Camera, Action For founding member Tess Woods Joven of Indianapolis, Team Film gave her the team connection she missed after being a Carmel High School athlete and on the track and cross-country teams at Eastern Kentucky University. “When you get out of school, you lose those opportunities,” she says. “Running and exercising can become a solo endeavor. There’s something about doing physical activities together that creates a bond you don’t get other places in life.” Today, Tess, also a mother of three, can be found playing soccer, doing yoga, cycling or trying something new, such as an upcoming urban adventure race. Holly and Tess both stress that women don’t always give themselves permission to take care of themselves because they are too busy doing things for everyone else. “There are women who are looking for us. They need permission to say, you know what, I need to be healthy, I need to have fun, and that’s OK,” Holly says.

“It’s super inspiring to see some of these women take their first steps, having never done much for themselves health wise. They have a career, they have a family, yet they do these unbelievable physical challenges.” The Team Film website offers race recommendations, invitations to Team Film socials, training tips, personal stories and swag for sale. And it’s not just about the sweat. Their mission statement sums it up—to empower women to go beyond their physical comfort zones through support, connections, adventures and serious fun. “I look forward to the run, but it’s more about the company and what we might do after,” Tess says. “We’ll say, let’s meet for a run tonight at 6, so we can be at the brewery by 7!”
outside my comfort zone, too.” A few years ago, several Team Film members accomplished another impressive physical challenge—qualifying for the Boston Marathon. But the marathoners didn’t make the trip to the starting line in Hopkinton alone. A crew of Team Film members, runners and nonrunners alike made the weekend trip to eat a pre-race seafood dinner, binge on gourmet desserts in Little Italy and cheer on their teammates. “They wanted to be part of it, and it meant so much to those of us running,” Holly says. “During the race, we were able to focus on each other, on having fun and that feeling of accomplishment.” Most recently, Tess and other members of Team Film served as bike escorts for the Indianapolis Women’s Half Marathon. Just before the start of the race, one of their members who had signed up for a 5K decided to do the half marathon instead. Supported by Team Film pacer Maria Harper for those 13.1 miles, she finished and earned her medal. “Those are the stories that I love,” Tess says. “That’s what Team Film is about.”

Oscar-Worthy Moments Inspiration and a healthy dose of peer pressure drive Team Film. Holly is motivated every day by her girlfriends and her children. When one of her teammates suggested a 50-mile trail run, she knew she couldn’t say no. “My kids are so fearless. I see them do stuff they’ve never done before without thinking twice,” she says. “I told my friend she was crazy when she asked me to do that 50-miler, but I still did it. And I thought about my kids when I was running. I wanted to show them I go

NEWEST LASER OFFERS GREAT RESULTS Dr. Jan Turkle fills us in on the newest laser treatment for rosacea, facial veins, port wine stains, cherry angiomas and other vascular conditions
T
he latest weapon in the fight for healthier looking skin is Excel V, a laser that is safe and effective for all skin tones. The Excel V laser can treat a wide range of vascular conditions on men and women. It is effective at treating rosacea, facial veins, port wine stains and cherry angiomas.
Rosacea is a chronic condition characterized by flushing or redness of the face. While distinct vessels can be part of the condition, the overall redness is caused by vessels that are too small to see individually. Rosacea affects more women than men and is most common between the ages of 30 and 60. Patients sometimes complain of heating or discomfort when their face flushes. Episodes of rosacea can be triggered by strenuous exercise, temperature extremes, alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods. With Excel V, much of the redness can be removed but periodic treatment will be required because rosacea is a chronic condition. Facial veins, or telangiectasia, are small dilated blood vessels. While they usually are not a medical issue, they are a cosmetic concern for some people. They commonly appear around the nose and on the cheeks and chin. Telangiectasia can be due to genetics or to environmental factors such as chronic sun exposure, physical stress and alcohol use. Using the Excel V laser, small vessels can disappear immediately after just one treatment, but larger vessels may require multiple treatments. Port wine stains can be improved with the Excel V. These are congenital malformations that are present in approximately three in 1,000 births. The stains range in color from light pink to dark purple. Port wine stains can occur anywhere on the body, but most often appear on the face and persist throughout life. The vessels do progressively dilate, which can result in a thickening and darkening of the port wine stain, with areas becoming raised and nodular. Cherry angiomas are small red papules that appear spontaneously on the skin. They typically appear in middle age and will increase. At first, they may be a fraction of a millimeter in size, but gradually grow to a couple of millimeters in diameter. Cherry angiomas are nicely treated with Excel V. The Excel V also has a cosmetic benefit for patients with skin lesions or scars from past injuries. It works very well to resolve bruising from aesthetic injections or surgical procedures. Treatment with the laser greatly speeds up the disappearance of the bruising and allows to patient to return to social activities much more quickly. Excel V treats all of these vascular conditions by administering a unique high power green laser that is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels in the skin. Over time, the vessels will no longer be visible. More than one treatment may be necessary to achieve the desired results. The cost of the procedure depends on the size of the area and the number of treatments.

5 TIPS FOR STAYING FLEXIBLE By Judy Burnett
A
re the aches in your joints as accurate as a Doppler radar? When you bend, does the snap, crackle, pop you hear rival a certain children’s cereal? Even if you can’t hear or feel your joints today, it’s smart to start caring for them now so you stay pain free and mobile well into the future. A joint connects two or more bones and provides flexible connections between them. If our joints are damaged, we can suffer pain, aching and limited mobility. Although there is no definitive count, most sources say there are at least 230 moveable and semimoveable joints in our bodies. The thing about joints is that they allow us to do pretty much anything, from sitting to yogalates. Without joints, we would be just rigid skeletons, unable to bend or move. Some joints, such as those in our knees, are like hinges. If we didn’t have knee joints or hip joints, we’d walk around stiff-legged, like a tin soldier. Going up stairs or driving a car would be impossible. We wouldn’t be able to squat to sit. The joints in our necks allow us to pivot our heads. Our shoulder joints allow us to rotate our arms. Are you getting how much we need to take care of these things? If we don’t take care of our joints, we can develop osteoarthritis and other debilitating conditions. The good news is that giving your joints some love isn’t hard. For your health kit, here are five tips for healthy joints: 23

Log 150 minutes of activity. Joints need to be moved to stay healthy. Physical activity helps strengthen the muscles around our joints, making them stronger, as well. Joshua Kluetz, doctor of osteopathic medicine at Community Sports Medicine, recommends that children and teens get 60-90 minutes of physical activity five to six days a week. He says adults should strive for at least 30 minutes of light to moderate intensity exercise five days a week.

Put up your guard. Wear protective equipment when participating in physical activities that put you at risk for injury. Injuries early in life can contribute to osteoarthritis in later life. Yes, even women need guards when we play hard.

Keep your load light. Excess weight is hard on our joints, especially our knees, so maintain a healthy weight. According to Web MD, every pound of weight loss is 4 pounds of reduced load on the knee joints. “The accumulated reduction in knee load for a 1-pound loss in weight would be more than 4,800 pounds per mile walked,” writes researcher Stephen P. Messier, Ph.D., of Wake Forest University in a 2005 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism. “For people losing 10 pounds, each knee would be subjected to 48,000 pounds less in compressive load per mile walked.”

Get your calcium and D. Dr. Kluetz says no specific foods will prevent or cure joint problems, but a balanced diet meeting the recommended daily allowances of vitamins and minerals provides valuable nutrients for joint health.
Calcium is essential to building strong bones, and vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium. If we don’t have enough vitamin D, we are at greater risk for bone loss. We can make sure we plenty of it by eating tuna, salmon and other coldwater fish that also contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce wear and tear of the joints. Dr. Kluetz suggests we have two servings of these fish a week. We also get vitamin D from the sun because our bodies convert sunlight into D—with a caveat. “Sunlight is very important but you need to be careful,” Dr. Kluetz says. “A lot depends on your skin type. Do you burn easily? There is a risk of overexposure, which can lead to skin cancer. Avoid peak sun times and don’t get a sunburn.”

Don’t rely on the bottled stuff. Dietary supplements won’t make up for deficiencies in essential nutrients. Most of us should be able to get what we need from our diets because our bodies absorb vitamins and minerals from foods better than from supplements. While supplements are widely marketed, studies have shown that the results of the supplements aren’t definitive or that the supplements are ineffective. For example, many people with osteoarthritis take glucosamine chondroitin for joint pain. “The studies are very mixed,” Dr. Kluetz says. “It hasn’t been shown to impact the prevention of osteoarthritis. In certain people with osteoarthritis, it may help with discomfort, but it is not generally beneficial.” Dr. Kluetz says other popular supplements such as methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), SAMe, gelatin, copper and vitamin C do not appear to have significant benefits to the joints, but that in reasonable doses they don’t have any ill effects either. Some supplements may interact with medications and too much of any supplement can be a bad thing. Keep in mind that you should never take a supplement without checking with your doctor.

My joints hurt all the time. Should I schedule an appointment with a joint specialist?
If you are experiencing continued pain, swelling or stiffness in your joints, you may have arthritis. Some people are able to manage the symptoms with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. If your pain lasts for more than three days or if you have several episodes per month, talk with your personal physician to determine if seeing an orthopedic surgeon is right for you.
I’m under 50 years old. Am I too young to be considered for joint replacement?

In short, no. In the past, orthopedic surgeons often recommended surgery only for patients who were between the ages of 60 and 80. The thought was that the implants would wear down eventually and would need to be replaced. Over the years, new state-of-the-art materials and advanced techniques have made joint replacement procedures available and effective for those under age 50.

What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is a degenerative joint disease. Over time, there is a breakdown of cartilage between the joints, eliminating the cushion between the bones. This friction causes inflammation, stretching of the tendons and ligaments, and is the source of the pain associated with osteoarthritis.
What is rheumatoid arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes joint pain, swelling and deformity. If you’re living with RA, aggressive medical treatment is critical to maintain your mobility and joint function. It is important to receive a proper diagnosis, as it can affect other parts of the body such as your skin, eyes, lungs, heart, blood or nerves.
For osteoarthritis, a simple X-ray will typically show the loss of cartilage and wear on the joint. For rheumatoid arthritis, in addition to the X-ray, blood tests are performed to look for elevated levels of some specific antibodies.
It is important to stay active and keep your joints moving even though it hurts to move at times. Swimming, riding a bike and walking are the best exercises for your joints. Make sure that you avoid walking on paved areas, as this will add stress to your already damaged joints.

There’s no simple way to address this subject, but if you want to help preserve the older driver’s personal freedom and mobility while ensuring safety, there are steps you can take. Communicate openly and respectfully. Avoid an intervention; keep the discussion between you and the driver you want to assist. Inviting the whole family to the conversation will alienate, and possibly anger, the person you’re trying to help. Never make assumptions. Focus on the facts available to you, such as a medical condition or medication regimen that might make driving unsafe. Focus the conversation on being safe and working together.

This isn’t easy. Driving equals independence. However, regardless of his age, it sounds like it is time. There are several approaches. One, have a conversation with him. Or have the doctor tell him directly. The doctor becomes the bad guy, but for some reason, we take news from the doctor and we still respect him later. Lastly, check your area for senior driving services that can assess the ability to drive. I wish you the best as you are faced with this challenge. Remember to take the next step with care, gentleness and love. You’ve got this.

START WITH FAT
“Eat Butter.” With those two words, the June 23 edition of Time magazine just may have triggered a health revolution. It’s way too early to tell, of course, but at least we can hope. What’s the big deal? Just two words, yes, but with those two words, 70-plus years of nutrition advice—the house the USDA built—came tumbling down. For years we’ve been told, “Don’t eat fat.” And so, dutifully, we haven’t. Has it worked? Look around. Over those same 70-plus years, we have grown obese. Being overweight is now the norm—69 percent of us. Heart disease and diabetes and cancer—all directly related to weight—are as prevalent as ever. Has it worked? I guess not. Interestingly, those who embrace Functional Medicine (FM) have been preaching the “Eat Fat” message for many years now (as long as it’s not trans-fat). Functional Medicine? What’s that? Long dismissed by “conventional” medicine, Functional Medicine is actually cutting-edge medicine, standing solidly on a vast and growing tome of clinical data. Two Elements of Functional Medicine Functional Medicine is built on two foundational elements. First, it aims to understand the true “root cause” of disease. The goal is not to identify “what” the disease is (i.e., make the diagnosis), but rather to understand “why” the disease is. Why is this person, who was once physically and/or emotionally functioning well, now no longer functioning well? What’s gone wrong? Secondly, our goal is then to correct that dysfunction as naturally as possible. Almost always this involves nutrition, which takes us back to fat, and the fact that Functional Medicine physicians saw long ago that the evidence against fat was rife with problems from the very beginning. But did we get lucky just this once? I think not. Barely a week goes by now when I don’t encounter some highly respected voice from conventional medicine embracing some long-established tenet of Functional Medicine. (See box for examples.)

This hidden treasure is one of Indy’s finest. You may think it’s the beautiful park, Footlite Musicals or easy access to Mass Ave that draws in residents. In fact, it’s more. The people of Herron-Morton Place are a diverse, tight-knit group, making HMP feel like a small town, even though it’s smack dab in the middle of the nation’s 13th largest city.
Today Herron-Morton Place is a diverse, thriving district many people are happy to call home. Residents host numerous festivals, such as the Rock n Romp and Oktoberfest, in their local park (complete with an open-air pavilion and kids’ play area). In addition, the neighborhood association organizes a garage sale, home tour and much more.

Bordering East 16th Street to the south and 22nd Street to the north, Herron-Morton Place encompasses the area between Central and Pennsylvania streets. The land was originally owned by Samuel Henderson, Indianapolis’ first postmaster and mayor. In 1859, Henderson sold the property to the Indiana State Board of Agriculture, which planned to use the land for state fairs. But after hosting just one fair, in 1861 the land was utilized to house and train Civil War soldiers. When the war ended, the area was again used for fairgrounds until it was sold to three home developers in 1891.
Morton Place, as it was then called, became an elite neighborhood for Indianapolis professionals, yet the neighborhood lost many homes to fire and disrepair in the mid 20th century. In 1983, the area was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places and interest in the neighborhood was reborn.

Melissa Iannucci couldn’t be happier to live in HMP. “Never have I lived in a place with such a tremendous sense of community,” Iannucci says, “We have the most interesting group of neighbors.” An architect and owner of Trade Design Studio, Iannucci designed and built her home in 2007. She’s also done work for her neighbors, including kitchen and bath remodels, as well as complete home renovations. “I recently put a kegerator in someone’s house as part of a large kitchen renovation,” Iannucci says with a laugh. “I love working with clients; they challenge me to think outside the box.” Iannucci is passionate about the neighborhood. “The people who live here really care about the community and it shows in the events we hold, the way people volunteer their time to take care of public spaces and the way they take care of each other.”

Herron-Morton Place is offering a neighborhood home tour Sept. 7 from noon to 6 p.m. “The tour is a chance for neighbors to open their homes to people outside the community and give an inside look at what life is like in our lovely neighborhood,” Iannucci says. Tickets are $10 each and will be sold the day of the tour (visit herron-morton.org for details).

e are unaware, often unconscious of our resistance, our part in keeping the life we desire from coming to be. Knowing this, we must have compassion for our self and for others on this human journey. Each of us knows what we know, and our depth of knowing increases day by day until our last breath. No one consciously chooses the negative things that life brings, and I believe with all of my heart that we can’t keep the pain of life away, no matter how conscious we are. Pain is as essential as joy. All of us have had our asses handed to us in one way or another. The betrayals and violations from the past threaten to hijack our now if we let them, if we don’t recognize that we need to acknowledge and grieve them in order to untether our self and our energy from them. I have said for years that you have to start with “Forget it! Forget this! Forget that!” in order to get to “Bless it! Bless this! Bless that!” So when I live with an abiding thank you in my heart now, it has only been made possible through going places I didn’t want to go. This abiding thank you has been birthed from allowing my self to go into the raw truth of the emotions that surround events that have shattered me. Pretending it’s all good and using platitudes while repressing and denying the wounds that bind us keep the abundance, the pure goodness of life, from flowing through us and manifesting in the material world.

If we are less than grateful for the gift of this life, we must examine and shine a light on the things we have avoided that rob us of the aliveness that’s available. Each moment informs, bringing opportunities to see how our choices, attitudes and beliefs create the life we live. Staying tuned in, be willing to look at your part and own your choices without judgment, as this will empower you to see that you are the captain of your ship and this is indeed your life. You can navigate your life asleep at the wheel or with eyes wide open, facing whatever comes, knowing you can find a way to get where you want to go. You can lock life out, shutting off the flow, believing that you are a victim of life’s unfairness, or you can become the victor, the hero in your own story. The invitation this day is to pause and take inventory, appreciating your self—all that you are—and owning the gift that is you. Writing out this inventory is a grounding practice and allows you to reread later, sipping in all that you are and reminding your self who you are when you forget. From this place of thanksgiving, seeing how wonderful it is to be you and what a privilege it is to journey this life as you, you will appreciate others and life at an unparalleled depth. You will carry an abiding thank you in your heart, not denying the crappy things or wallowing in them, but rather accepting what comes and looking for what it has to show you and teach you in order to free more of you to come out and play. m

Grilled Corn on the Cob PREP 8 min. GRILL 20 min. SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS
6 ears sweet corn 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper DIRECTIONS
1. Remove husks from corn. Rinse with water to remove silk. 2. Wrap each ear individually in aluminum foil. 3. Heat grill for direct cooking to medium heat. Grill corn over direct heat about 20 minutes or until kernels are tender, turning occasionally to prevent the corn from charring on one side. You can test if the corn is done by piercing a kernel with a fork. It should be tender and shoot out clear liquid. 4. Remove corn from grill. Unwrap. Serve hot corn with butter, salt and pepper.
