A New Era in Skin Revitalization PICO Genesis offers improvement for melasma and hyperpigmentation

N

early 40 percent of the U.S. population has problems with unwanted areas of darkened pigmentation and more than 70 percent of us are seeking tone and texture improvement, especially to the face and décolletage. If you’ve noticed dark patches or darkening spots on your face, neck or hands, you may be experiencing some form of hyperpigmentation. A new technology, called PICO Genesis, focuses on your problem areas whether it’s brown spots, sun damage, freckles, pigmented lesions or acne scars. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the melanin in your skin becomes overactive. This condition is characterized by dark spots, sometimes called age spots or liver spots, freckles, pigmented lesions and darkened areas. It’s a common skin condition for millions of people of all ethnic groups and may particularly affect pregnant women, the elderly and people who have experienced severe acne breakouts. Hyperpigmentation can be difficult to get rid of but PICO Genesis is an advanced technology that offers an effective treatment option. It’s a non-invasive, non-surgical laser technology that focuses on the problem areas of discolored skin and quickly treats the affected areas with little to no discomfort. PICO Genesis offers optimal results in the treatment of brown spots, general discoloration and melasma. We recommend this quick in-office procedure as a series of three treatments spaced four weeks apart. Any area of the body that is susceptible to sun damage and texture issues can be treated such as the face, décolletage, arms and shoulders. This no downtime treatment delivers short, controlled high energy pulses deep in the skin to target and shatter pigment issue and to improve texture. PICO Genesis gives you a brighter, more even skin tone and reflection in 2-3 treatments. To see if you are a candidate for PICO Genesis, call 317-848-8101 to schedule an aesthetics consultation.

The Cay, an MLK holiday tale, is the story of a privileged young white boy and a resourceful old black man marooned on a tiny island in the Caribbean during WWII, reminding us that friendship has no boundaries. “This is a survival story — survival against the elements, against hunger, against prejudice and against disability,” says Janet Allen, executive artistic director at the IRT. She hopes audiences

young and old will leave the performance thinking and experiencing emotions connected to intolerance. The Cay is sure to start conversations about how bigotry has held each of us back, and how we judge based on skin color, accent or financial status. “We must learn to see people as individuals, with all their promise and hope and sacrifice,” Allen says.

SHOULD I OR SHOULDN’T I?

715 E. Carmel Drive Carmel, IN 46032 317-573-4400 www.AmandasExchange.com

I am a hopeless dreamer and goal setter, so ringing in the new year is such a motivational time for me. I don’t really care for the big New Year’s Eve celebration, but I do love taking time to clean out my work desk and my closets at home to prepare myself for the year ahead, full of possibility.

My goals are typical: lose weight, work harder, exercise more. But not this year. Kit’s Renew You story (page 27) gave me new ideas to yank me out of my same old routine. We asked local experts to provide ideas, tips and challenges for getting 2017 off to a great start, and it’s an inspiring mix, including new fashion pieces to try, creating “margin” in your life, how and why to get more sleep, apps to help you stay in the present moment, and how to create better living areas. If you’re looking for new goal ideas for ringing in 2017, this article is chock-full of them. I also love our aging feature (page 49). I am 52 and have been caught in what I call a “thought loop” for the past few years. Should I or shouldn’t I? I have a big dream and I keep telling myself I am probably too old to accomplish it. I am past my prime, so why work hard at it? Anyone else have those same thoughts? Well, our aging story provides inspiring advice on why we shouldn’t succumb to a selffulfilling prophecy of decline. It also offers real-life examples of what others are accomplishing at late stages in life. It might just help nudge you out of your safe space and push you to follow your dreams. It did me. Here’s to new dreams and possibilities in 2017 — no matter our age!

PLANTING TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS

1

Putting these herbs and plants into regular old soil isn’t going to keep them healthy and growing like you want. Mix in a root stimulant and slow-release plant food like we do in the video. These extras will help keep your garden going. The products we recommend are Biotone root stimulant and Garden-tone fertilizer. (Both are organic options from Espoma and can be found at Allisonville Garden and Home.)

14 kitindy.com

2

Feel free to be creative when choosing a container to put your herbs in. They are actually really pretty and can be a great décor piece. However, whichever container you choose, be sure it has drainage holes in the bottom so excess water doesn’t accumulate and harm the plant roots.

Some of us aren’t born with green thumbs — guilty as charged. To help us get growing, the Allisonville Garden and Home team offers four tips on how to properly plant and care for these mini gardens. Here’s what we learned.

3

When planting, use this rule of thumb: thriller, filler, spiller. Even though it sounds crazy, it’s super easy to follow. Your thrillers are your taller plants and they go in first, in the back of your container. Next, working forward, plant your medium sized plants (the fillers). And last, the front of your container should house your spillers, or plants that are low-lying and tend to “spill” over the sides of the container.

4

Speaking of water, be aware that these mini gardens typically need more water than other planters you may have. Multiple plants in smaller pots call for more water.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: FIRA BOUTIQUE Classics are critical, but knowing where to turn when you want the latest sleeve length, sweater texture or jean wash is invaluable. Meet Anna Ragle, owner of Fira Boutique (918 Broad Ripple Ave.), this issue’s shop in the spotlight. Ragle takes care to create a full-sensory shopping experience, and her store is filled with affordable, fashion-forward clothing and accessories. We spoke with Ragle to learn more about Fira Boutique and how she landed in Broad Ripple.

Q A

HOW LONG HAS FIRA BOUTIQUE BEEN IN BUSINESS?

Q A

WHAT KIND OF PIECES CAN WOMEN FIND AT FIRA?

Fira Boutique incorporated in October 2013 with our first brickand-mortar location in ChampaignUrbana, Ill. Fira actually got its start as a traveling Boutique in 2011. I did pop-up shops and home parties throughout central Illinois and university sorority events. I’d pack a trunk full of goodies and collapsible clothing racks in my teeny-tiny car and pop up a boutique right in their living room. This helped build a rapport with the community and garnered a huge following, which helped open the brickand-mortar location with a successful response from day one.

Fira specializes in fashionforward, yet affordable clothing and accessories. At Fira we push the envelope with unique new trends, and also incorporate a mixture of classic, neverout-of-style pieces.

Q

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO EXPAND TO THE BROAD RIPPLE AREA?

A

Broad Ripple is an area I always felt to be charming and would always make sure to visit when in the Indianapolis area. There is great energy with the Butler campus just blocks away and the location being perfect as a main thoroughfare for our business.

Q A

WHAT DO YOU WANT OUR KIT READERS TO KNOW ABOUT FIRA?

There’s something to be said for shopping small. Our goal is to provide an exemplary store experience, something that can’t be found elsewhere. We try to account for all the senses, and put thought behind each one. We enjoy the relationship with the customer and being the familiar face for fashion advice each time they step in the store!

Introducing: Pelvic Floor Therapy Research reveals 25 million adult Americans suffer with urinary incontinence. Many view it as a natural consequence of childbirth and aging. Often Kegel exercises are recommended for strengthening the pelvic floor; however, frequently these exercises are not being performed correctly or they can actually make some conditions worse. Therefore, a thorough pelvic floor examination should be performed to determine the factors contributing to the incontinence. Pelvic floor physical therapy can provide proper treatment and instruction in home program for self management. Definitions for Urinary Incontinence: • Stress Incontinence: loss of urine during increased abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, or running. • Urge Incontinence: inability or extreme difficulty holding urine during a strong urge with the need to rush to the bathroom. • Mixed Incontinence: combination of stress and urge incontinence. • Urgency/Frequency: urinating more than every 2 hours during waking hours. • Urinary Retention: inability to completely empty bladder which can be associated with pelvic muscle dysfunction. • Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome: recurring discomfort, pressure, or pain in the bladder/pelvic region. Signs and symptoms may include urinary urgency/frequency/retention, suprapubic pain, low back pain, abdominal pain, pain before/during/after urination, urinary frequency at night, and pain during sex. • Pelvic Organ Prolapse: one or more of the pelvic organs drop from its normal position.

Pelvic Floor Therapy can be used to treat: Menstrual Pain | Pain during or after intercourse | Perineal pain | Myofascial pelvic pain syndrome Vulvodynia | Pain due to sexual abuse, rape, or trauma | Tailbone pain | Levator ani syndrome Pain after abdominal or gynecological surgery | Pelvic floor dysfunction | Genital pain, itching, burning Scar tissue restrictions/pain | Vaginismus with gynecological exam or intercourse NO PHYSICIAN REFERRAL REQUIRED. SELF-REFERRALS WELCOME!

Andrea McMath, Physical Therapist, is specially trained in pelvic floor therapy. No physician referral is required and self-referrals are welcome.

EXPERT ADVICE

LIBIDO LOWS, WOMEN’s WOES. “SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED A FOOD THAT REDUCES A WOMAN’S SEX DRIVE BY 99%. WEDDING CAKE.” — JIM DAVIDSON. We’ve all heard jokes like that before. In reality, for lots of women, it’s not funny at all. Declining libido is a real problem for millions of women, and couples, the world over. Does it have to be so? Is it inevitable? Answer: No, it’s not. So what can women do to boost their libido? Lots of things, actually.

The Gender difference First and foremost, it’s important that both partners recognize that, for women, libido is far more complicated, complex, and contextual than it is for men. Men and women simply view the role of sex differently. Therapist and author Esther Perel puts it this way: “Women want to talk first, connect first, then have sex. For men, sex is the connection. Sex is the language men use to express their tender loving vulnerable side. It’s their language of intimacy.” Sometimes couples (okay, so mostly it’s men — we can be pretty slow at times) don’t understand that distinction. Or, if they do understand it, they tend to forget it from time to time. That can lead to frustration on all fronts. But there’s more to it than simply recognizing the gender difference.

Stephen P. Elliott, M.D. Living with Intention, INC 11979 Fishers Crossing Drive Fishers, IN 46038 317-863-5888 LivingWithIntention.biz

What causes low libido? Hormones play a strong role. As sex hormone levels drop (think menopause and perimenopause), libido frequently drops, too. And then there’s the vaginal dryness, fatigue, hot flashes, etc. Clearly, If intimacy is uncomfortable or painful, or if you just feel lousy, sex is going to be a pretty low priority, right? Beyond hormones, other factors like stress, fatigue, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and medications also contribute to libido frustrations. Take stress. Stress isn’t something abstract. It’s real, and it’s powerful. In recent years scientists have learned an enormous amount about the effects of stress, both positive and negative. Excessive stress, over time, can crush a healthy libido. Fatigue and insomnia? Makes sense, too. If you’re simply exhausted, the thought of sex is just too much. Depression and anxiety? Remember, for women, sex is contextual. Affection first, sex second. But if you’re frequently feeling down, irritable, anxious, or tearful, it’s pretty hard to be affectionate, let alone want to have sex.

ADVERTORIAL

Finally, lots of medications suppress libido, too. Antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, and Paxil. Cholesterol medications like Crestor and Lipitor. Blood pressure meds like Metoprolol or Propranolol. Even allergy meds like Zyrtec and Claritin. Can anything be done about all this? Of course! The key is to figure out where the problem lies, and then to address that problem as naturally as possible.

DID YOU KNOW? Without cholesterol, you can’t make any of your sex hormones. So lower cholesterol may not always be better. It’s complicated.

FIND YOURSELF BY PRESSING PAUSE GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO SLOW DOWN. In this fast-paced society, we get caught up in worrying over the past or anticipating the future so much that we don’t get to enjoy the moment. We end up reacting to what life throws us instead of being present and intentional. We can’t be be true to ourselves if we don’t allow pauses in our daily routines. Yoga, which is the integration of postures or exercises with breath and meditation, can help make way for those daily pauses. Anyone of any age or physical ability can do yoga. An increasing number of scientists are studying how yoga benefits health: from helping with depression and anxiety, to lowering blood pressure, to boosting our immune system.

HOME EXERCISE

1

Sit on a blanket in a comfortable crosslegged pose. Place your hand over your navel.

2 THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT The Lotus Bud Mindfulness Bell app chimes randomly throughout the day. I use it as a gentle reminder to take a pause, to be mindful of how I am feeling, and to take a couple calming deep breaths. It is a great way to bring yourself into the present moment, be more mindful, reduce stress and increase joy in your day-to-day.

FAVORITE THING

JOURNALING is another great way to pause and reflect. In these pauses, reflect on what makes you happy. Consider the following: Who is your authentic, true self? This will allow you to lovingly serve yourself and others. »» Set an intention: see it … believe it … practice it. »» Love what is instead of what could be. »» Embrace uncertainty. »» Live in the moment. »» Practice self-kindness and self-care daily. Give yourself time and space to reflect. We often feel we can’t even find 15 extra minutes in a day, but this time is crucial for both our emotional and physical health. It only takes 15 minutes a day to realize these health benefits.

“The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron is one of my favorite books. It’s a great introduction to the power of journaling, tapping into our creativity and spirituality.

MANTRA One of my favorite quotes: “Your thoughts become words; your words become actions; your actions become habits; your habits become character; your character becomes destiny.”

Breathe into the belly, feeling it grow. Keep inhaling as the breath expands to the ribs, and then the chest.

3

Pause for a moment, completely filled with air.

4

Exhale from the chest, then the ribs, and then the belly. Pause.

5

Continue the same sequence, inhaling to the belly, the ribs, the chest, and so forth.

6

Try for five to ten rounds and work toward more repetitions.

CHALLENGES 15 IN THE MORNING: Start waking up 15 minutes earlier than usual. Use this time to breathe, pray, meditate or stretch. BETTER BREAKFAST: Start your day with a healthy, high-quality protein breakfast to rev up metabolism, build lean muscle, increase energy and curb cravings. I suggest a protein shake made with whey or a rice-pea protein blend. I prefer Isagenix because it contains organic, nonGMO ingredients. GIVE ME 3: Journal three pages every night.

MAKEUP TIPS

RENEW YOUR WARDROBE

EYES To create a fuller, more doe-eyed look, forego eyeliner on your upper lash line and instead take a flat liner brush and, using a deep shade of plum, brown or charcoal, use a brush to press and lift shadow into your upper lashline.

IN 4 STEPS

The first part of the year is a great time to take inventory of and clear out the wardrobe. Closets are often so full that the more we have to choose from, the harder time we have actually seeing what we own. Here are four practical steps to declutter your closet:

1

Pull out all of your hanging clothing and place them into piles, organized by pants, dresses, special occasion, etc.

2

Touch each piece before you hang it back into your closet. Consider these questions: »» Does it fit right now? »» Does it flatter me? »» Does it reflect my current style?

4

For discarded items, divide them into three categories:

»» Resell: Pieces currently in style and in excellent condition; they just need someone new to love them. »» Donate: Pieces more than three years old with slight wear but in good shape. »» Discard: Items stained or excessively worn. Keep your closet fresh by repeating this process at the beginning of each season. Consider also removing pieces from your closet every time you shop. (If you purchase three items, discard three items.) This will keep your closet clutter-free!

»» Is it in great condition? »» Does it serve a purpose?

3

If you can answer yes to these questions, hang the item back in your closet. When you do, follow these guidelines for optimal organization. »» Group like items together. »» Color-code within each grouping. »» Hang pants and jeans lengthwise for easier viewing. »» Hang out-of-season clothing to the back. »» Face all hangers the opposite direction. At the end of the season, you’ll be able to easily see which items were not worn.

INSPIRED TO CHANGE IT’S OK TO PUT YOURSELF FIRST A

magazine cover with before-and-after photos of a woman who had undergone a makeover caught Nancy Dezelan’s eye one day, and it inspired her. “I wanted to look like her. I still have that magazine,” she says. Dezelan carried the magazine around for a year before doing anything about it. Dezelan grew up a farmer’s daughter. She was taught that the family should worry about the animals before spending money on themselves. Eventually, she came to the realization there is nothing wrong with putting yourself first sometimes, and there is value in feeling good about your appearance. Dezelan mentioned the magazine cover to her husband. “If that’s what you want to do, let’s go in and talk to Dr. Turkle,” he said. Plastic surgeon Dr. Janet Turkle was the doctor credited with the magazine cover makeover. Dezelan’s major concern was her skin. Years of sun exposure had left her with lines, wrinkles and age spots. The damage was especially pronounced around her mouth.

NANCY DEZELAN

“I was like most women of my generation. I put oil on my face and baked my body in the sun,” she says. “I wanted to look fresh but not as if I’d had something done.” Dr. Turkle recommended deep laser resurfacing, an in-office procedure. Dezelan had some swelling and mild discomfort for about a week after the treatment. “After that first week, I could put on makeup and go out if I wanted. No one knew I had anything done. They just told me I looked really great,” she says. Dezelan followed the post-care instructions and used the recommended products. She now follows a new regimen for taking care of her skin with products and facials she gets at Dr. Turkle’s office. “I can’t turn the clock all the way back, but I can feel better about myself. I think I look more youthful, natural and refreshed, and I feel that way, too.” Dezelan says. Dezelan is thrilled with the results. She’s also happy that she put herself first, inspired by someone she’ll likely never meet. “I am thankful to the lady whose face was on the magazine cover. I might never have had this done without her willingness to have her before-and-after photos displayed. Now I see a renewed me, and I feel good about that.”

SKIN DEEP

SKINCARE TIPS TO LIVE BY »» Drink 8 or more glasses of water daily. Your skin needs the hydration. »» Always wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, even in the winter and on cloudy days. One of the greatest causes of premature aging of the skin is sun damage. »» Don’t smoke. Smoking ages the skin and causes wrinkling around the nose and mouth. »» Eat a healthy diet including at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Include foods rich in omega-3 and vitamins C and E. »» Get plenty of sleep. The average adult needs a minimum of seven hours of interrupted sleep per night. »» Exercise regularly.

FAVORITE QUOTE “Be a girl with a mind, a woman with attitude and a lady with class.” SKINCARE CHALLENGE GET IN THE HABIT. Apply sunscreen every day to all exposed areas of your body (e.g. face, arms, décolletage, etc.). Even if you have oily skin, use a good facial moisturizer daily. Oil and moisture are not the same thing. Moisturizers help hold water in the skin, which makes your skin look and feel better.

SUPPORT YOUR LEG HEALTH WITH VARICOSE VEIN INSIGHTS Some people might think vein treatment is just a cosmetic procedure and don’t consider the potential health benefits from treatment of varicose veins. The most common misconception about large, asymptomatic varicose veins is they do not need to be treated, but untreated varicose veins can eventually lead to significant discomfort, skin damage and clotting. Another misconception is that crossing a person’s legs causes varicose veins, but that’s not true. Veins carry blood back to the heart. Normal veins have one-way check valves that prevent gravity from pulling the blood back into the legs. The one-way check valves can become leaky, allowing blood to flow back into the legs. When this occurs, varicose veins develop and allow blood to be pulled into the legs by gravity, causing dilation and tortuosity of the veins. There are many causes, but heredity, hormones, pregnancy, obesity and prolonged standing can all be implicated.

A conservative treatment for varicose veins is weight loss, exercise, leg elevation, skin moisturizers, medicalgrade support hose and over-thecounter anti-inflammatories. More commonly, a very successful, minimally invasive outpatient surgery may be performed to eliminate the abnormal veins. The surgery involves a very tiny catheter inserted into the abnormal vein and, using either laser energy or radiofrequency energy, the vein walls are heated and then sealed closed. People often experience complete relief of symptoms and improvement in the leg’s appearance. RISKY BUSINESS Professions that require prolonged sitting or standing in one location have been shown to be at high risk for varicose veins. »» Hairstylists »» Factory workers »» Cashiers »» Teachers »» Nurses »» Librarians

LEG HEALTH TIPS »» Maintain a healthy diet and weight, and exercise regularly »» Avoid prolonged sitting and standing in one location »» Elevate your legs above the level of the heart and wear medical-grade support hose when possible »» Avoid wearing heels to reduce the pooling of blood in the veins

IT IS IMPORTANT TO STRENGTH-TRAIN AS WE GET OLDER. Both women and men lose muscle mass as they age. You can inhibit this decline by lifting weights and using resistance to build muscle. Don’t worry: Getting stronger will not give you big, bulky muscles. It will help you look toned.

I was looking for a personal trainer to help me get back into weight training. I met with the manager of Stronger, and she explained a program I thought would help me meet my goals. Since joining, I have noticed increased muscle strength and more energy! Stronger Fitness helps me obtain my fitness goals and stay accountable. LIVE INTENTIONALLY CREATING MARGIN IN LIFE When I was in graduate school, one of my professors required a weekly written assignment. One of his restrictions was it must fit on one side of one page. That was when I learned the trick of altering the margins of the page. I now realize that “margin” is an incredibly important concept. When my life is lacking margin, whether that be in finances, time or emotions, I suffer, and the people around me suffer. Margin allows us to accommodate the curveballs of life that will inevitably come. But when we are living full-out, using every ounce of our time, money or emotions, there is no space. The urgent pushes out the important. We can’t be proactive because we’re constantly reacting. One of the most common themes I encounter with my clients is that we are living in a world that lacks margin. The very technology that was supposed to make us more efficient, productive and provide us with more leisure time, has enslaved us in a way that we are rarely, if ever, truly free to relax and breathe deeply. Richard A. Swenson, M.D., says it well in his book, “Margin”: “Marginless is fatigue; margin is energy. Marginless is red ink; margin is black ink. Marginless is hurry; margin is calm. Marginless is anxiety; margin is security. Marginless is culture; margin is counterculture. Marginless is the disease of the new millennium; margin is the cure.”

MUST-READ

INSPIRED SURROUNDINGS

Read the book “Margin” by Richard A. Swenson, M.D. It not only helps identify the problem, it offers practical (if challenging) solutions to help you regain margin and control of your life.

I retreat to my great room early in the morning, with a fire in the fireplace, my comfy afghan, a cup of hazelnut coffee and “Falling Upward” by Richard Rohr.

SELF-TRACKING

The Serenity Prayer: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

If you don’t currently use a planner or calendar to schedule your activities, start. Put everything on there to help you recognize how much you are actually doing every day, as well as where your time is actually going. Do the same with your finances. Keep track of every cent you spend. We frequently don’t realize why things are so tight because we don’t really know where our money is going.

WEEKLY CHALLENGES KEEP TRACK OF EVERYTHING YOU SPEND. Keep it in your notes on your phone or in a little notebook. It will help you realize ways in which you can begin the process of creating more financial margin in your life. LAY OUT YOUR CLOTHES, including underwear, jewelry and shoes, for the next day before you go to bed each night. Your mornings will be less stressful and you’ll be amazed at the time (margin!) you will create.

INVEST IN YOURSELF

LIKE WHAT YOU SEE IN THE MIRROR DEFY THE SIGNS OF AGING WITH CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY Embrace technology! Seriously; we all use technology every day in many aspects of our lives (smartphones, tablets, apps) but there is so much we can do to change the skin in 2017 with the devices available to us. And, more significantly, the ultra-high tech treatments we can provide can actually keep the aging process at bay — and reverse the signs of it! The HALO laser treatment does in one session what it used to take a series of treatments to achieve, and can virtually eliminate monthly maintenance for many people. The same advanced technology lets us tighten up areas of the body now when surgery might have been the only option before. Vanquish, Exilis and CelluTone have been the most exciting new body therapies I have seen in years; they really do deliver results. My guests are inspired by the changes they see in their skin after the treatments — so much so that they embrace other complementary lifestyle changes, such as working out or cutting down on food that causes inflammation. Those lifestyle changes do make a difference over time, and you can see it on a person’s face: their color improves, they lose puffiness and start to glow a little more. It’s important to be able to feel as though you are worth the investment in yourself.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO BE HEALTHY IN 2017 Being healthy is as much a responsibility as it is a right. This year, make sleep a priority. Why? Because sleep renews. Sleep restores. Many people believe that nothing happens when we sleep, or that it’s a waste of time. Some even pride themselves on “needing” very little sleep. That’s a big mistake. Sleep is an incredibly active time during which lots of important things happen. Cells get repaired. Tissues and organs get restored. Our mitochondria, those tiny energy factories inside every cell, are renewed. Our muscles, bones and immune systems get stronger. Our memories are processed, sorted and consolidated, moving from short-term storage (where they can be easily lost by all you’ll encounter tomorrow) to long-term storage. In a nutshell, sleep helps you lose weight, build muscle, be more energetic, avoid illness, and improve your memory. But wait, there’s more. Sleep also helps you learn and process new information, both cognitive and physical. In other words, your study efficiency improves, and your ability to do and learn new things improves. If you want to learn to read music, play an instrument, or speak a new language, get some sleep. Even things like how to swing a golf club, do yoga, swim, dance, sew or garden can benefit from more sleep. What happens when you don’t sleep well? Lots of things — all of them bad. You increase your risk of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, infection, cancer, memory loss, dementia and even premature death. You’re more likely to be tired, depressed and anxious, and have mood swings. You have difficulty processing new information. You have more problems focusing, concentrating and paying attention. (Think of all those sleep-deprived kids and teens diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Perhaps a little more sleep might just … Makes you wonder, right?)

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY, RESTFUL 2017 FAVORITE PRODUCT: Magnesium often works wonders! Look for the right kind, though. Some just cause diarrhea.

SLEEP GOAL Keep a consistent sleep schedule; aim for 7-9 hours a night.

INSPIRING QUOTE “Sleep is the best meditation.” — Dalai Lama

RIGHT TIME I like to run, but not in the evening. Evening exercise interferes with sleep.

MEDITATE ON THIS We expect to be healthy. We believe that we should be healthy. It’s our right, right? Actually, no. Being healthy is at least as much a responsibility as it is a right. It doesn’t just happen. It takes intention, effort and perseverance. Without those, we can’t expect to enjoy good health.

CELL RULE Turn your phone off at night. 24/7 access isn’t healthy. If it’s important, it’ll be there in the morning.

SOAK AWAY Take a warm Epsom salt bath in the evening, about 30 minutes before you want to go to bed.

P.M. PLAN Establish a relaxation routine and practice it nightly, starting 30-45 minutes before bedtime. Ideas might include reading a book for pleasure, cuddling with a pet, cuddling with your spouse, praying, meditating or doing relaxation exercises. Choose one thing, and do it every night. Just one catch: It can’t have anything to do with electronics. No Internet. No phone. No TV. No Facebook. You get the idea.

What to do to renew you in 2017? Sleep. Sleep well.

FIVE ITEMS TO POLISH UP CLASSIC CLEANERS, classiccleaners.net

1

SWEATERS Easily renew your sweaters at home by depilling them with a handheld device you can purchase at a fabric store or online. Pilling is caused by the sweater rubbing together at your side, underarms, elbows or chest during wear. For your cashmere or wool sweaters, opt for dry cleaning them. It’s gentler then laundering in a machine at home.

2

HANDBAGS Add new life to your leather handbags by taking them to a leather specialist who can clean, condition, repair and protect them. A professional can remove ink stains and repair worn areas such as handles, front pockets and the bottom of the bag.

3

SHOES Remove dirt and salt residue from your leather shoes by wiping them down with a soft cloth. Polish them to replace the lost oils and give them a debris barrier. Store a simple, unfinished cedar shoe tree with a split toe and a fully shaped heel in your shoes to draw out moisture from average wear and reshape them to their ideal shape. If the soles, tips or heels need repair, a professional will be able to clean, polish and repair and return them to their like-new condition.

4

COATS & JACKETS These staples can take a beating while they protect you from the elements. Renew your outerwear by having it professionally cleaned. Check the cuffs, collars, body and belts for stains and be sure to point them out. After cleaning, hang them on a well-padded or wooden hanger to maintain the shape and shake it out after every wear. Keep your closet vacuumed to prevent dust and dirt from settling on them, and use a lint brush often.

5

SLACKS AND BLOUSES Ready-to-wear items off the rack rarely fit perfectly. Don’t be afraid to invest in simple alterations to renew your items and give them a custom fit. You probably have items in your closet you’d wear if they were tweaked to fit better. Check for repairs needed such as buttons, hems, broken belt loops, and gaping waistbands, and let a professional bring them back to life. You’ll feel like you have a whole new wardrobe!

SHAWNA O’BRIEN Classic Cleaners classiccleaners.net

SIMPLIFY THE SET Don’t let the winter doldrums set in. Use this downtime to declutter your room!

Our lives are so chaotic that we need simpler surroundings to come home to. It’s time to get rid of the excess. Take all the accessories, art, lamps and rugs out of the room. Next, revaluate the furniture placement. Does it truly make sense for the function of the room? After you get your furniture set, think about your rug. Does it anchor the furniture together? Don’t be afraid to angle the rug for a little whimsy or create interest with a smaller rug. Bring back the art pieces in order of largest to smallest. Examine each as you bring them in and see if they work or fight with your new uncluttered look.

DESIGN CHALLENGE REDO THAT MANTEL! Be honest: it’s been the same since you moved in and used what was leftover from the last house. Remember, simple shapes, and less is more. PACK UP GRAMDMA’S LAMP. It might be sentimental, but it belongs in the box with the other memorabilia. Use clean shapes and simple shades. It’s all about color and texture!

Next is lighting. Update those shades! Natural linen cylinder shades give a clean look. Lamps are where you can add pop of color. Last are accessories. Be sure to maintain your new, uncluttered look. Nothing too goopy! Clean, geometric shapes are good. Pay attention to texture and color. Remember to have fun with it!

NICK WILLIAMS, DESIGN AND FLORAL MANAGER John Kirk Furniture, Carmel

FLAUNT YOUR FASHION 1

I’m fairly certain that designers brought back high-waisted skinny jeans so that twentysomething hipsters could wear them with crop tops or do that half-tuck thing with their shirts. But they’re a godsend for all women — even if you never show off the high waist — because they smooth out the midsection and stay put on your body. Goodbye muffin top and weird bulges, goodbye tugging up the waistband by the belt loops, and goodbye, um, overexposure, every time you bend down. With most tops (except crop tops), it just looks like you’re wearing regular skinny jeans. The high-waist part can be your secret.

My favorite pair are AG Contour 360 “Farrah” High Rise Skinny Jeans, agjeans.com. Every day, they fit like the first time I put them on. Never any bagginess in the knees or butt.

The whole world seems to be on sale after the holidays. If you feel the urge to shop, here’s a game plan: Shop for seasonless basics, and pounce when the price is right. Think along the lines of a chambray button-down shirt, an everyday cardigan, nice leggings, that perfect grey v-neck T-shirt. Smartly build your core closet to avoid buyers’ remorse.

TO KICK OFF 2017,

BACK IN BLACK

Stefanie said she felt attractive and somewhat edgy in this monochromatic black outfit — especially in the coated jeans that hugged her slim figure. The printed blouse adds pattern and texture to the outfit. Monochromatic outfits make everyone look a little taller, our model included (she’s already 5 foot 7). Stefanie liked the booties as well and was surprised at how comfortable they were. Leather jacket, $399; sheer blouse, $99; and black coated jeans, $99; all by Lucky Brand at Macy's. Carlos Santana booties, $69.99 at Macy's. Silver earrings by INC, $29.50 at Macy's. Choker, $6; and bracelet, $32; at Karisma in Noblesville. Acrylic bar stool from HOUSEWORKS.

Kit gave a “Renew You” makeover to a deserving, woman in the community. Everyone knows a woman who selflessly gives without expecting anything in return — someone who doesn’t leave enough time for themselves. Kit wanted to give one of those women a giant “Thank you!” and let them know they’re appreciated. We asked, you nominated. Now it's time to meet our (more-than-deserving) winner.

We quite literally kicked off 2017 with Stefanie!

CONTEST WINNER STEFANIE PALICH has her hands full, which appears to fill up her heart as well. The 34-year-old Noblesville resident has — count 'em — five daughters between the ages of 1 and 9 and, of course, loves spending time with them. She also enjoys running, and recently completed a half Ironman in Muncie, Ind. Palich will be participating in San Francisco's “Escape From Alcatraz” triathlon in 2017, completing the 1.5-mile openwater swim in the Pacific Ocean, along with an 18-mile bike ride and 8-mile run. While Palich enjoys knitting (on occasion) and keeping her home clean (a part-time job on its own with five kids), she also strives to

MEET WINNER STEFANIE PALICH

serve and mentor others — helping people is her passion. You can often find her volunteering in the children’s ministry at Grace Church in Noblesville. “Stefanie’s passion for loving and caring for people is evident in all that she does,” says Stephanie Whonsetler, who put Palich's name in the running for Kit's makeover. “She goes above and beyond to show people how loved they are, even in the simple acts of cooking a meal for a family in need or sending a heartfelt and encouraging text message to a friend, ‘just because’ she was thinking of them.”

NOMINATED BY | Stephanie Whonsetler, who says, "She is absolutely the most selfless, giving and loving woman I know!" AGE | 34 OCCUPATION | Mom, teacher, caregiver, mentor (aka Wonder Woman) STYLE | Classic and clean

While she homeschools her five daughters, Stefanie’s mother has moved in with them. The family has also welcomed a new friend into their home who was in need of some loving support. On top of the responsibilities that come with having a full house, the family experienced a trying setback when Palich's husband was diagnosed with cancer; he is now cancer free! Whonsetler calls her friend beautiful inside and out. “I’m not sure how she does all that she does, let alone how she does it with the amount of faith, trust, hope and grace that she does!” says Whonsetler, adding that a woman as generous as Palich deserves a gift. A few days of pampering “will show her the love that she so readily shows to all of those around her!”

DAY 2

DAY 3

Day one started in style as Palich and stylist Beth Divine went on a shopping spree to Macy’s. Pulling dresses, blouses, jeans and vests, the pair worked to honor Palich's classic, clean tastes while dipping her toe into a range of styles. On to the dressing room! As a mom and athlete, Palich enjoys being comfortable and keeping it simple. You're likely to find a pair of comfy jeans and riding boots, or running attire close by. The outfits from Macy’s represent parts of Palich's lifestyle and personality. Divine's styling tips helped her model learn more about highlighting her body type. They choose clothing items that enhance Palich's best features and draw attention to her curves.

Palich spent her second "Renew You" day at Massage Envy and Phases Skin Care to treat herself to the soothing sensations of a massage and facial. Palich carries a lot of stress in her shoulders and neck, so her Massage Envy visit included a focus on these areas to release tension. A facial newbie, Palich got to experience Phase Skin Care's HydraFacial. The exclusive procedure helps improve fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, skin tone evenness and vibrancy, hyperpigmentation, oily/ congested skin, enlarged pores and signs of aging. Palich particularly enjoyed the exfoliation and brightening of her complexion.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS Kit would like to thank all of our sponsors for giving our winner the ultimate red carpet experience! Day three called for more pampering as the pros at Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Salon did Palich's hair and makeup for the Kit photo shoot. With her personality, she needed something fun, but effortless in style. The stylist cut her hair into a choppy bob that gives more emphasis to her jawline and can be worn in a variety of ways. Palich's dark, shiny locks got a shot of brightness to make the new cut pop. Her eye makeup was kept soft and natural to enhance her eyes, letting her lips dig into a deeper shade of plum to showcase their beauty and fullness. Once complete, Palich visited our Kit studio for the photo shoot, spending the day posing for the camera like a real-life celebrity!

KIT PROVIDED OUR CONTEST WINNER WITH: »» Personal makeup and hair styling makeover from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Salon »» Facial services from Turkle Associate’s Phases Skin Care and Laser Center »» Massage from Massage Envy »» Personal style consultation from Beth Divine Style »» Shopping spree with Beth at Macy’s »» This feature story in Kit!

LADY IN RED

Stefanie Palich said she’s been told she looks great in red — and she does! "I wanted to put her into a dress because she doesn’t wear them very often, nor the high heels. Stefanie was surprised how much she enjoyed this dress and look, and it even had pockets!" Divine says. The dress is comfortable, yet glamorous — perfect for date night or a party! The neckline shows off her shoulders and well-toned arms, and the A-line skirt gives her more of an hourglass shape. Calvin Klein dress, $149; Michael Michael Kors sandals, $125; Noonday Collection earrings, $34; all at Macy's. Acrylic bar stool from HOUSEWORKS.

WE LOVED GETTING TO KNOW STEFANIE PALICH for the "Renew You feature. During our first conversation with her, it was obvious she had a strong sense of personal style, knew what colors looked good on her and how to best emphasize her shape. Her fashion icon is the ever-classic beauty Audrey Hepburn. “I like classic clothing I can wear from season to season,” Palich says. “I like some patterns and bright colors.” Indeed, bright colors look amazing on Palich because her coloring is “clear.” She has a lot of intensity and contrast in her hair, eyes and skin coloring, with deep brown hair, olive skin and bright blue eyes. She can always wear bright colors such as turquoise, purple, red, teal, magenta, jade and hunter green, as well as navy, black and white. Silver is her best metal, although touches of gold work, too. Palich's shape is straight, without a lot of curves, and her athletic shape means her waist isn't typically well defined. The goal, then, was to add some curves, define the waist, and make sure clothing fits and is not too baggy. Palich is one of the those fortunate few who can rock body-con clothing, too. She should always fill out whatever she wears.

BEFORE HER MAKEOVER, STEFANIE PALICH (SECOND FROM LEFT) AND HER FAMILY.

A NOD TO NAVY

"This dress is another great shape for a no-curves figure because it defines the waist and adds some curves. Blue is a great color for someone with clear coloring such as Stefanie," Divine says. Once the dress was on, Palich liked the floral print and pockets, even though she said it was not something she would normally pick. The denim jacket is a casual addition, and the purple belt adds a bit of contrast, avoiding a matchy-matchy all-blue outfit. The navy booties with fringe carry on the look of the outfit and are a nice change from just black boots. Tommy Hilfiger dress, $134; William Rast denim jacket, $109.50;Â Thalia booties, $59.99; INC bracelet, $39.50; INC earrings, $19.50; all at Macy's. Belt, from Divine's closet.

42 kitindy.com

PRETTY IN PLAID

Palich loved the comfort of this plaid shirt and stretch of the skinny jeans — these are the kinds of separates she lives in as a busy mom of five. Divine picked a size 2, down a size, to make sure the jeans fit well. "It’s essential you buy jeans that are snug since they often stretch later if they have spandex in them," Divine says. Palich liked the gathered waist of the lined military jacket. “It shows my waist!” she exclaimed during the shoot. The bright colors of the plaid shirt look great on her, and the brown boots round out the laidback vibe. Levi's military jacket, $180; Lucky Jeans plaid shirt, $89.50; INC skinny leg jeans, $69.50; INC earrings, $19.50; Frye boots, $398; all at Macy's.

sex

drive INCREASE YOUR DESIRE By Brooke Reynolds

Spectacular sex is something that can — and should — happen at any age. But as we grow older, lifestyle and hormone changes can affect our desire for sex. Here, Julie Schnieders, women's health practitioner and executive director of St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center, offers her professional impression of sex during each decade of a woman’s life — and what you can do about the challenges during each.

44 kitindy.com

WOMEN IN

WOMEN IN

40s

50s & beyond

Women’s hormone levels sometimes peak in their 20s, which can set the stage for a healthy libido (sex drive). However, life circumstances can make a dent in desire, from worries about jobs and finances, to the hormones she’s taking.

Many women experience a decrease in desire starting in their 40s — a time called perimenopause — that may continue through menopause. Although they may still have periods, women start to notice changes in mood, desire and sleep, and experience the onset of hot flashes.

The ovaries usually stop functioning when a woman reaches her early 50s or menopause sets in. When the body goes through this change, decreased libido is one of the main complaints. The most important thing to know is that being sexually active in midlife to our golden years is perfectly normal and possible.

20s & 30s

Having babies can also have a huge effect on interest in sex. Lost sleep and hormonal changes, especially from breastfeeding, can zap libido and cause vaginal dryness. If kids are in your world, it’s important to carve out time just for you and your partner as a priority. For some, changing hormonal choices or other medications can make a difference. And for other women, Addyi, the new FDA-approved medication for hypoactive (low) sexual desire disorder can be a game-changer. This currently is approved only for premenopausal women.

The average age a woman has her last period is 52. However, symptoms related to this change in our bodies can start years before we reach our 50s. Testosterone — involved in sexual sensation and desire — and estrogen are the main hormones that start to decrease, fluctuate and cause some of these annoying symptoms. Lifestyle changes and even counseling can make a big difference.

WOMEN IN

The decrease in estrogen causes hot flashes, moodiness, vaginal dryness and lack of sleep. Vaginal dryness can cause the skin to become very thin and lubrication to decrease, therefore causing painful intercourse and no desire to be sexually active. Sometimes the lack of desire is just not there because her testosterone levels have dropped, as well as her estrogen levels. There are a number of options for this problem. Vaginal estrogen will help vaginal dryness. Systemic hormones are also an option for some patients, especially at the beginning of menopause. Using testosterone is considered off-label (meaning the medication is being used in a manner not specified in the FDA's approved packaging), but it often works well for some patients. As a woman ages, depending on her circumstances, she may find that while the hot flashes decrease, the vaginal issues become a bigger deal. She may experience vaginal issues unrelated to intercourse that are bothersome, such as recurrent yeast or bacterial infections. There are many treatment options for these, such as hormone treatments, non-hormone treatments, and oral/topical medications. The MonaLisa Touch will also treat vaginal dryness, and St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center has had great success with this option. A patient who cannot or does not use hormones, such as breast cancer patients, may want to consider the MonaLisa Touch. It’s a gentle laser treatment and takes only five minutes with no downtime or major side effects. It can greatly improve comfort, thereby helping renew a woman’s interest in sex.

Contact your doctor to discuss changes in your libido or related symptoms. Find St. Vincent Carmel Women's Center at stvincecent.org.

EXPERT ADVICE Q+A

SEX AFTER MENOPAUSE Menopause does not deprive any woman of her sexuality, but sometimes the annoying side effects of menopause take a toll on us. Cara Berg Raunick, nurse practitioner and certified sexuality counselor in the Pelvic Health Program at St. Vincent, reminds us that sex remains an important part of women’s lives and overall health beyond menopause. So why not figure out how to combat menopausal side effects and still enjoy sex? Raunick tells us how.

Q A

What are the sexual side effects of menopause?

The side effects are caused by changing hormones and the drop in estrogen. Hot flashes, fatigue and mood swings can really affect a relationship and decrease sex drive. One of the big sexual side effects is changes in vaginal tissue, which can cause dryness, burning, irritation, less sensation, pain or discomfort with sex, and even urinary symptoms.

Q A

What are possible treatments?

The good news is that there are many options to help relieve these symptoms. Treatment depends on the woman’s individual goals and needs but can include lubricants, moisturizers, local estrogen treatments or systemic hormone therapy, supplements, the MonaLisa Touch, and many lifestyle modifications.

ADVERTORIAL

Q A

What is the MonaLisa Touch?

The MonaLisa Touch is a unique treatment option for vaginal changes of menopause. It is a gentle laser therapy that promotes healing of the vaginal tissues in three treatments, six weeks apart, with no major side effects, use of hormones or downtime. Women have this treatment and return to work the same day.

Q A

How can menopausal women improve their sex drive?

This is such a complex question! It is different for each woman. Generally, all the good things you know to take care of yourself can help – a healthy, varied diet, getting plenty of good quality sleep, and getting enough exercise to stay healthy. There can also be medications, supplements, counseling, or hormones that can help, depending on your situation.

Q A

Name some reasons to look forward to menopausal sex.

Many women find that menopause can be a time of really coming to know themselves. With this, women find they have a good understanding of what it is sexually they like best now and have the skills and confidence to express it and get just what they want. Plus, not worrying about pregnancy can help with spontaneity and relaxation.

Q A

What are tips for great sex during menopause?

Great sex does not have to end with menopause! Now is a great time to explore the variety of ways to engage in intimacy that can help you and your partner find satisfaction and feel connected. And above all, if you are having concerns – about dryness, pain, desire or anything else – remember that you can talk about it to your healthcare provider. You deserve a healthy, fulfilling sex life, at any age or life stage.

FIND YOUR MEANING By Vicki Maynard, Executive Director, SarahCare of Indianapolis

WHAT ARE OLD PEOPLE FOR? In a world where you can find a self-help book on nearly any topic imaginable, would you believe I have a book in my office with that title? It’s written by William H. Thomas. In the first chapter, Thomas writes a line to which most people of specific ages can relate. It reads: “Every morning all across America, people peer into bathroom mirrors, searching for signs of age. No line, no blemish is overlooked.” After reading the line, I immediately thought of my grandmother; I can remember a time when I saw her looking into the mirror and asking, “Who is that old woman?” My question is why are we as a society so negative about aging, especially in America? Many cultures around the world have a whole different attitude toward their elders. And here, all around us, we have many examples of people aging well.

“WHY ARE WE AS A SOCIETY SO NEGATIVE ABOUT AGING, ESPECIALLY IN AMERICA?”

Those of us in our 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond are active, experienced, capable and talented. We continue to learn skills and contribute to our communities. At 81 years old, Julie Andrews directs films and writes children’s books with her daughter. She lost her famous singing voice when she was 62, but Andrews says that in a strange way she feels fortunate she no longer can sing because losing her singing voice pushed her to find a “different way” of using her voice. Harriet Thompson became the oldest woman to complete a marathon in May of this year. She is 92, and her finishing time was 7 hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds. The two-time cancer survivor ran her first marathon when she was 72 to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The beloved actress Betty White is 94 and recently quipped, “Men are a hobby of mine.” She still hopes to date and keeps an active schedule. At SarahCare, most of our participants are older adults. Many are dealing with memory impairments and physical issues that are claiming parts of their independence. But each day they are at the center, they are creative through art and music. They participate in yoga and other forms of exercise. They share their stories and wisdom with the group. They find ways to assist each other. They continue to be needed. Some days I look in the mirror and ask, “Who is that old woman?” I dwell on lines reflecting back at me, and I search for additional signs of aging. I remember my grandmother, who lived to be 91 and was beautiful inside and out her whole life. I remember the beautiful people I am blessed to spend each day with at SarahCare. And I think often of a quote from Anne Frank, the girl who didn’t get to see her adult years but still provided much wisdom in the time she did spend on earth. “What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t even happened yet,” Frank wrote. May that be so with each one of us, no matter what each of our birth certificates might claim.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT LIVING WITH By Kate Kunk RN CIRS-A, Caregiver Options Counselor, CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions

“Well, you know, she’s almost 80,” the daughter replied, with the classic wink and apologetic head-tilt when asked how her mother is doing these days. Too often, we as a society take for granted a progressively lower quality of life and less productivity in people as they age — and in turn, many seniors succumb to a selffulfilling prophecy of decline, believing that passing some imaginary number of birthdays presents both a license and an obligation to slow down, step aside, isolate and fade away. Granted, our years and gravity eventually take some physical toll, and very few of us can hope to ever receive national acclaim on “Good Morning America” for conquering Mt. Everest at 76 or long distance running at 101. However, the erroneous presumption that facial wrinkles and the number of years one has lived are key indicators for the capacity to achieve excellence in every day is a pitiable commentary on our understanding of the extreme importance of remaining fully engaged for the duration of life. Statistics show that people over the age of 50 with more positive self-perceptions of aging live an average of 7.5 years longer than those with negative self-perceptions of aging. In addition, older adults exposed to positive stereotypes of aging have significantly better memory and balance than those exposed to negative ones. So what does it take to acquire a positive outlook and help to create those positive stereotypes? The answer is simple: We do both of these things when we engage in meaningful activity and acquire a sense of purpose, such as that of serving others. We must stop worrying about what we cannot do now or will not be able to do in the future, and instead find constructive, creative things to do that can make other people’s lives better today. Can you make a phone call to a lonely friend and offer encouragement? Are you able to join with AARP volunteers to lobby our legislators for a just cause? Would you be willing to let a child who is struggling academically practice reading to you? Can you, like former President Jimmy Carter (age 92), champion the end of homelessness by helping to build houses with Habitat for Humanity? The number and breadth of opportunities for meaningful service are endless, and somewhere on that list is an activity that will not only bring a great deal of personal joy for yourself and those you help, but it will also inform other generations that growing older should be eagerly anticipated. Remember: Just because we cannot do some things does not mean that we are supposed to do nothing. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” Article sourced from Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and American Psychological Association

DEMENTIA, IN THE ‘NOW’ By Kristen Jenkins, Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter

In life, experiences often rush up and pass us by before we are able to fully appreciate them. We fall in love and get married, find a great career and have children. By the time we sit down to take a breath, we have grandchildren in our laps and gray hair on our temples. Upon retirement, life slows down. We are granted freedom to pursue new things, or rekindle passion for old favorites. There’s time to appreciate our experiences. But what happens when the freedom of our age is pushed away from us by something like Alzheimer’s disease? We cannot appreciate our experiences when we, or our loved ones, no longer remember them. At the Alzheimer’s Association, we work to prove that statement wrong. A diagnosis of dementia is not the end of someone’s freedom. It simply adjusts the perspective. Receiving the news that you or your loved one is facing dementia can be devastating, but it does not have to destroy. Caregivers and people with dementia alike may experience resistance or withdrawal; these are steps of the grieving process. However, these feelings of despair don’t need to control your time together. The caregiving process is an active one, and it urges us to make decisions that we may not always be comfortable making, so that the rest of our time with our loved ones is safe and enjoyable. The venerable Dr. Seuss once said, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” When the amount of time together is a question mark, it is incredibly important to make the most of what you have now. Being diagnosed with dementia does not mean that you cannot pursue new experiences together; it just means that you find a new way to appreciate them.

FOUR CENTRAL INDIANA HOT SPOTS FOR VALENTINE'S DAY

Story by Megan Neely | Photos by Chandler Nehrt

Valentine’s Day is your chance to celebrate the special people in your life. Planning a romantic date night or a group date with friends? Check out these four destinations — you're sure to fall in love with one. 53

THE ITALIAN HOUSE ON PARK GET NOSTALGIC FOR OLD WORLD CUISINE

Whisk your sweetheart off to an evening in Italy at the Italian House on Park. The cozy downtown Westfield home-turnedrestaurant brings an intimate, casual, Old World atmosphere to Hamilton County. Inquire about Valentine’s Day specials to include an exclusive dinner package for two. Among the Italian House's best-selling dishes is the seafood fettuccine, chock-full of clams, mussels, scallops and shrimp in a creamy Alfredo sauce. Another favorite, the shrimp gambelli, is a traditional shrimp scampi with five jumbo shrimp, white wine lemon sauce and Parmesan cheese over linguini. Appetizers, salads, meat, seafood and pasta round out the menu. Finish with a slice of chocolate fudge cake or scoop of limoncello gelato. Connected to the Westfield home is a shed that’s been turned into a bar. The restaurant's full bar serves wine, beer and cocktails. Try the Smashed Mule made with amaretto, artichoke liqueur, St. Germaine and lemon topped with Gosling's Ginger Beer. Opened in October 2015, the Italian House is the latest concept from owners Nyla and Scott Wolf, who also own four Wolfie’s Grill locations. Family, food and faith guide how the Wolfs run their dining spots. The family even started their own ministry, RIBS (Restaurant Industry Bible Study), which has become a popular “wolf pack” family gathering for their more than 180 employees. Spending Valentine’s Day with friends? Avoid the romantic, candlelit dinner scene at Punch Bowl Social, a 2016 addition to Indianapolis and the seventh Punch Bowl in the U.S. This quickly expanding franchise mixes Southern-inspired, made-from-scratch food with a concerted attention to games. The 23,000-square-foot restaurant and bar is the largest restaurant downtown and holds eight bowling alleys, corn hole games, ping-pong tables, darts, billiards, arcade games, oldschool board games, a giant scrabble board, karaoke and the renowned Bonzini Board (essentially an eight-person game of foosball). In the center of the city, Punch Bowl Social attracts the business crowd as well as families. Including a full bar and late-night hours, Punch Bowl Social also brings in a younger crowd. Popular dishes include the no-frills “Knock-Off Burger”: two grassfed beef patties, rémoulade-like sauce, pickled onion, lettuce and American cheese on a sesame seed bun, served with French fries. Also hits are the chicken ’n waffles and ribs.

PUNCH BOWL SOCIAL

IT’S GAME ON WITH A FULL PLATE OF FOOD

The restaurant recently partnered with celebrity Top Chef Judge Hugh Acheson to continue guiding their Southern-styled philosophy and menus. Punch Bowl Social’s name comes from its one-of-kind punches, available in a variety of flavors (for adults and kids). They also serve up homemade juices, milkshakes, craft brews and classic cocktails. Punch Bowl Social 120 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis 317-249-8613 punchbowlsocial.com

PEACE WATER WINERY ONE BOTTLE DOES A WORLD OF GOOD

KIT

soup Photos and recipes by Katherine Costello

While exotic juices and cleansing salads might be de rigueur in the ever-shifting arena of foods that heal, nothing new quite stands up to the visceral, curative properties of a hot bowl of soup on a cold winter day. It’s good for the soul. Kit contributor Katherine Costello put together three quickserve delights that are full of flavor and warmth. “Soup is somewhat personal, and forgiving with many ingredients. If you like more of something, add it. Keep tasting through the process, especially when adding heat, such as jalapeños,” she advises. Several ingredients among these recipes overlap, so declare a soup week and make them all. Costello has offered serving suggestions, but says this is a perfect opportunity to keep it simple with a loaf of crusty bread and some local cheeses.

This sweet-and-sour, tomato-based soup full of sweet peppers and thinly sliced pork is a meal unto itself. The broiled pineapple and jalapeño give it a real brightness and kick of flavor. I use a tenderloin, but this would be a perfect soup to make with leftover pork roast or even chicken breast.

Sweet sour and spicy soup SERVES 6

Pork tenderloin 1 small pork tenderloin (about 1.5 pounds) 2 tablespoons each coarse salt and pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1| Coat pork with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat and brown pork on all sides. Reduce heat to medium, loosely cover and continue to cook on the stove for 20 minutes. Turn off heat let pork rest 20 minutes before slicing. (This can be done a day before serving; refrigerate and slice when ready to add to the soup. If making day of service, cook pork while you prep the soup base to make this a quick soup.)

Soup Base 1 16-ounce can pineapple rings (reserve the juice) 4 whole jalapeno peppers 2 cups sliced red, yellow and orange sweet peppers (the little sweet ones) 1 sweet onion, chopped 1 /2 cup sliced cabbage 1 16-ounce can chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 6-ounce can tomato juice 16 ounces vegetable broth Salt and pepper, to taste

62 kitindy.com

1| Preheat broiler to high and place rack 3-4 inches from broiler. Arrange the pineapple and jalapeños on a parchment-lined baking sheet and broil until they are blackened (5-10 minutes total); watch them carefully as they can burn easily. Remove from the oven and let them cool while you are assembling the remaining soup base. 2| Sauté sweet peppers and onion in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan until softened (about 10 minutes). Add the cabbage and sauté a few more minutes; add the tomatoes, tomato paste , tomato juice, broth and reserved pineapple juice. 3| Remove the skin from the roasted jalapeño and chop the pepper into small pieces; add to the soup mixture. Cut the pineapple in small bite-sized pieces and add to the mixture, reserving three rings for garnish. Chop half of the pork and add it to the mixture. Thinly slice the remaining pork to serve on top of the soup; set aside. Simmer soup for about 30 minutes.

To Serve 1| Ladle into four-six bowls. Divide the remaining pork among the bowls, and place a half of a pineapple ring on top for garnish. Serve with your favorite crusty bread. (Make a great bread spread by mincing two roasted pineapple rings and one roasted jalapeño pepper; whip into 1/4 cup soft butter.)

I was waiting for tacos at my favorite Eastside taco place (Tlaolli) when the owner offered me a sample of his soup. As I tasted it — so full of garlic, cilantro, onion, and finished with lime — I declared that if I were ever under the weather, this what I would crave. Almost a week later, I woke up ill in the middle of the night, and all I could think about was that Mexican soup and how many hours it would be until the taco place opened so I could cure what ailed me. Don’t wait until you’re sick to try this vegan version, full of healthy ingredients and a little texture with the addition of hominy. Top it with avocado if you like.

Mexican winter cure SERVES 6

3 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, peeled and chopped 8 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 3 cups sliced celery 1 cup chopped zucchini 32 ounces vegetable broth 1 15-ounce can hominy, drained 1 bay leaf 1 pinch cumin 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro leaves Salt and pepper, to taste 3 limes, juiced

1| In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, sauté the onion, garlic, celery and zucchini until translucent. Add broth and bring to a boil; reduce heat, cover and simmer 20 minutes. Remove from saucepan and puree in a food processor, or use an immersion blender. 2| Return to saucepan, adding the hominy, bay leaf, cumin, cilantro, and salt and pepper, to taste. Simmer 10 minutes, and then add the lime juice just before serving. (I think this would be a great winter smoothie replacement; you may want to skip the hominy, so it can fit in a travel mug.)

To Serve 1| Serve hot with chips and guacamole! I served this soup with tamales I purchased frozen from my taco place. If you don’t have one near your home, make a visit to the city and pick up some frozen tamales, or make them yourself. (Clear your calendar if you plan to do that, as they are time consuming and tedious.)

Borscht SERVES 6

As I contemplated this assignment, i.e. soups, I confess that borsht is what first came to mind. I hadn’t made it in years, but the memories returned at once, vividly. The beautiful color and aroma of this Russian beet stew are stunning, and I thought of how grateful I am that my mother prepared it for our family when I was a child. I’m sure at first we may have griped about it. However, I remember her serving it with a dollop of sour cream on top, and I was in love ... so I’m bringing back borsht as I remember it. This easy, quick soup is a perfect choice for a Valentine’s Day meal.

64 kitindy.com

/2 medium-sized sweet onion /2 large fennel bulb 1 carrot 3 small beets 2 small potatoes or 3-4 smaller fingerlings 1 /4 cup sliced yellow or orange sweet peppers 2 tablespoons butter 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon dill 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 /2 head cabbage, thinly sliced 1 /4 cup cider vinegar 32 ounces beef broth 1 cup water Salt, to taste 1 dash white pepper 8 ounces sour cream (some may say optional) 1 1

1| Wash, peel, then thinly slice the first 5 ingredients, making sure they are bite-sized pieces. Melt the butter in a large heavybottomed stock pan, adding the onion, fennel, carrot and peppers; sauté until translucent (about 10 minutes). Add the beets, bay leaf, dill, tomato paste and cabbage; sauté for about a minute. 2| Add the cider vinegar, broth, water and potatoes and cook on medium-high heat for 10 minutes; reduce heat to low-medium and simmer for about 30 minutes, uncovered, until the potatoes are tender but still hold their shape. Season, to taste, with salt and white pepper.

To Serve 1| Although this soup is very good chilled, this time of year serve it hot on a cold day, with a dollop of sour cream. Borscht is great with pumpernickel bread toasted with butter or goat cheese and fresh herbs.
