Studio BRIEF The outer edge of Australian townships and cities has typically been occupied by the cemetery, petrol stations, industry and now Bunnings. With the notion of decentralisation and truck routes defining our understanding of accessing the edge, what is the ‘architecture’ that defines the periphery?

These programs are utilitarian. These programs are civic. These

programs at times are too large to be accommodated within the construct of the existing. Programs that service the edge based on accessibility and the ability to engage with an outer edge of landscape. With the perimeter being redefined and constantly renegotiated what is the architecture of change? Temporary or one of legacy?

How do we understand the role of the edge to define place, to define an architectural outcome? Through a critical analysis of precedents this is not a proposal for remembering for the sake of remembering but rather it is about being critical of what has been and what can be an architecture of periphery.

BULLA And SITE

Site for this project situated at Bulla 25 km. north-west of Melbourne CBD under local government of Hume city council. In 2016, Bulla had consensus of 675. The approximately distance from Melbourne CBD and Sunbury makes this location challenging in terms of urban development. Since this site will be absorbed into urban sprawl of Melbourne city.

The development surrounding and architecture program should be taken into consideration. There are two major’s road namely Sunbury rd. on the South and Oaklands rd. on the East. Furthermore, This site has a famous airplane viewing spot on lower right corner of the site. Making this site to be a tourist attraction for Bulla.

The existing infrastructure around site consists of Main road of Sunbury rd. (1), roudabout on lower right corner (2), electrical supplies on Cemetery rd. West side of site, and Trcuk parking on East side (4).

The most iconic view of Airplane viewing site that local and visitors usuallys stop by to observe the airplane landing to MEL airport. This landing route cut the site across from the north to south with its plain land that enhance the experience of airplane viewing.

FIAT LINGOTTO This building has been choosing as the main precedent for studying the periphery architecture. This factory locate in Turin, Italy, It was designed by MattĂŠ Trucco in 1916. Fiat Factory has been operating as car manufacturing factory until 1939. Before renovating to mixed- use building by Renzo Piano in 1982, This building has proofed to be operate

and functiom after a significant change in program and surrounding. There are two main factors that support the change and adaptabiy of this architecture. The first one is existing embeded infarstructure into building systems. The second one is ‘Beam and column of building that being dictated by the production line of car manufacturing. Lastly, the connectivity of bulding structure that tying all progam together and operate as one unify building.

Building Design and site impact The construction concept for the building was based on a series of eight modular symmetrical blocks, numbered in their order of construction from South to North. Each module was based on 6 x 6 metre concrete grid. This system 10

achieved the twin essentials of structural integrity and shop floor flexibility for the movement of parts, materials and building renovation in the future. After opened in early 19C, this building acts as an instrigator for urban development. Resulting in a dramatic rise of population of Lingotto by three-fold in next 50 years.

Building systems embded into existing infrastructure One of the most importance feature of Fiat Lingotto is the Building that embeded into surrounding infrastructure such as railway. Due to the main resoruce supplies for factory deliver by train, 12

leading to accessibility of trains and rails system dominance building orientation to be pararell with railway. Furthermore, the preduction line of car manufacturing is an another aspect that drive the architecture and structural design by designing column and beam to support machenic installation. This create an integrity

between building system, structure, and existing infrastructure, resulting in utilitarian architecture that various the system embeded into architecture.


Building structure and production line that aligned and support each other to reach the efficientcy and utilitary of building structure and mechanics.

Collage Collage has been using as a tool for experiement and observing for relationship between each fragments from precedent. Images inside the collage are considered as a high definition diagram which one image contain material, structure, and geometry. The way we collage each photo must be very precise and detail works, stitching different images (memories) together to represent 14

the main core ideas of each precedent. Composition and hierachy have an importance role in collage to deliver the idea of precedent and navigate the eyes of observers.

Week 7 (Mid-Sem) The precedent of Fiat lingotto is used to be the main langauage of developing during the experiement of periphery architecture of Bulla. This iteration we can see that the building is being grow from the core structure that act as a instrigator for this site for other program to grow and absorb into this structure. However, the structural type and site constrian such as road or

power supplies have a little impact on this architecture. Leading to architecture that might not be able to merge seamlessly to site. In addition, by forcing building to grow from this structure may leading to inconvenient and unnatural of town development.

Week 8 This iterations oriented according to the existing infrastructure of airplane viewing site, and connecting every building to the circular porous structure that have a program of Mixed-use. Even though all the building grwoing from this structure, the factors for other buidling to grow from this structure is not solid and forceful. Furthermore, the cemetery is being place at the top

without any relationship to other buidlings on the site. One thing we have to consider for the pheriphery architecture is time and development of the architecture in the future.

Week 10 Quarry plant has been introducing to be the main program on this site because there is a potential for quarry to be developt in the future into cemetery and park for the migrant resident around this area in the future. In addition, the alignment of the building and machine can also act as a signage of city wall to notify passing by for the city perimeter and edge. The comment on this

iteration is what kind of machine that the mineral processing plant would need that might dictate the form and shape of the architecture. Also the lack of quarry plant and processing requirement reflect onto architecture that have too few details and unrealistic to actual processing plant.

Processing plant The master plan shows the system of quaary plant starting from quarry on upper side, then deliver aggregrate to processing plant on the right side. Before conveying grounded material to production plant on the front.

Lastly, loading dock and petrol station are at the end of this production loop for truck to fuel up theor gas and leaving for delivery.

Section view shows interior view of factory which users circulations are elevated to first level to avoid the cross circulation from motors vehicle on ground level. The structure of space truss is being used to form a saw tooth factory. For maximum interior natural lighting into the building.

Week 11 This iteration develops from the prvious week with more details in the factory. The apeatance of Fait, Lingotto has been borrowing by pararel two factory building, while haveing open spaces in the middle to open the natural lighting into the building. However, thr buildings is still seperateable due to only connecting between them are the small circulations that cannot hold

all the buildings together. Another aspects that we need to consider is holistic, intregity and wholeness of the architecture which can not be seen in this iteration.

The idea of tying all the program through single line of wall which connects and supports all the program at the same time. At the moment, The wall does not play any vital role at the moment just a barrier wall to differentiate between outter perimeter and inner perimeter.

The section shows the solid wall on the right, while more transparent curtain wall on the left to using a wall as a architecture language to divide the interior and exterior of this project. The wall is used on the first level to seperate each office rooms inside the factory. Also all the service core is located at the building center to tying all service line in one stream. Township development of Melbourne city has normally been developing through residential area expanding from the perimeter of Melbourne CBD to surround the industrial area. Using infrastructure that once support factories and industries to support their living in city edge.

Township development around Melbourne CBD The town shows below is situated in Sunshine North, Melbourne. It is quite normal for Melborune city to develop township in this way. By constructing industrial area and buid supporting infrastructure to expand the city bounderies. This allow the efficientcy of town development by investing in one infrastructure. The census

showed that the people mvoing into North Sunshine has been increaasing from 2006 to 2016 by 10 percent and still increasing. Which can be clearly seen from the aerial view around the expired quarry site that there are a construction of housing estate over the time.

Week 13 The industries that had been choosing to demonstrate the periphery architecture in this project is “Precast Factory� as this factory is havy rely on the existing infrastructure to be fully operate. There are three features that need to support precast factory. The first one is power supplies, connecting to electrical power supply. The second one is

quarry. This would be a place where minerals are excavated and crushed to a fine aggregate. The last requirement for precast factory is the mineral processing plant where all mineral are sorted into different type before deliver to precast factory. This three feature needed to be close to precast factory to reduce the production and transportation cost.

Precast Factory The main machinery that use inside this factory is the semi-crane. Semi-crane needs support from factory structure to reinforce the crane for lifting all precast parts.

Mineral Processing Plant Processing plant is used to crush the mineral into aggragrate. Therefore, the closer of processing plant to quarry the lower the cost of aggrgrate.

Ground Quarry Ground quarry is a type of qually that dictate by the mineral truck that require a certain turning radius, Not only thetruck accesibility, but also the retaining wall structure will be using to prevent landslide for a longterm structure strength.

Week 13 The final iterartion of this experiemental periphery architecture is represented in the present as precast factory plant where the infrastructure is embeded into the building system. “ Infrastructure(n.) the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. �

There are three aspects from the definition of infrastructure that periphery architecture need to touch to create a coherence system between architecture and infrastructure which would help this architecture to be merged into the site seamlessly. In this final interation can be clearly seen that the road system dominate the building orientation for easy access of trucks

when exit the roudabout and position petrol station program in one way circulation to another main road side that easy acees for private car Furthermore by connecting to local infrastructure of power supplies on cemetery road on the left of selected site. Lastly, the building that heavily rely on building structure, creating utilitarian architecture.
