from the director Nation’s Highest Honor for Libraries O
n February 23, we were thrilled when The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced that the Kitsap Regional Library had been named one of 30 finalists for the 2016 National Medal for Museums and Library Services — the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to their communities. For more than 22 years, this award has ”celebrated institutions that demonstrate To have our libraries extraordinary singled out in this and innovative approaches to way is an amazing public services honor, and I am so and are making pleased to have a difference for the fine work of our individuals, families wonderfully creative and communities.” To have our libraries staff recognized singled out in this in this way. way is an amazing honor, and I am so pleased to have the fine work of our wonderfully creative staff recognized in this way. Just being in the illustrious company of the other finalists, such as the Brooklyn Public Library, Chicago History Museum and The Whitney Museum of American Art is a distinction in itself. In the application submitted by our library, a number of proud achievements were highlighted: A multi-year rebranding effort, redefining our role in the community. Community partnerships with such groups as the Puget Sound Genealogical Society, the Funding Information Network and our five public school districts.

Jill Jean, director of Kitsap Regional Library.
Community literacy support through our commitment to STEM learning and our new emphasis on Summer Learning that stresses connected, informal, interest-based learning. Innovative programs, including book discussions on commuter ferries, One Book, One Community celebrations and storytelling nights — just to name a few. The vibrant new library in Kingston with its interactive children’s area and flexible open rooms that can change to fit a variety of needs, from meeting space to maker’s space. Plans for a ”nature smart” library in Silverdale. And, our inspiring, award-winning staff that make it all happen! Even now, Kitsap Regional Library
is benefiting from this nomination. In addition to the national media coverage we have received, our community is looking at their public library with new attention and pride. Other advantages may include our ability to attract high quality candidates to open positions, fresh interest from our donor community and, of course, further support for Kitsap Regional Library in future library levy elections. The National Medal winners will be named this spring. But whether we win or not, we remain so honored to be recognized in this way. To learn more about the National Medal and see the list of finalists, visit imls.gov/2016-medals. — Jill Jean Director, Kitsap Regional Library

Summer On your mark, get set ... inspire! The Library is here to help you sidestep the ’summer slide’
W
hether you’re 9, 19 or 99, summer is a great time to dive into doing what you love — and the Library is a great place to start. Are you dreaming about whiling away long summer evenings lost in a good book? We’ll help you find some great picks. Maybe you want to plant a vegetable garden or brush up on your Spanish? We’ve got your back there, too. At Kitsap Regional Library, Summer Learning starts June 1, with a wide variety of activities and events that will inspire you to read and learn more this summer. Whatever you’re Summer Learning excited about right now, we’ll help you set and reach your starts June 1, with goal. Then, we’ll celebrate you a wide variety of activities and events for getting there.
Read: Read 10 hours, win a prize. What could be simpler? to read and learn Especially since you can read more this summer. anything you want. Sometimes the simple things are the most important. Research shows reading 10 hours over the summer helps prevent the ”summer slide” — the tendency of kids to lose academic ground over summer break. And adults, it’s good for you, too; reading novels can increase your empathy and emotional intelligence. It’s also a great chance to model lifelong reading habits for any young people in your life. that will inspire you

starts here. Read More: If you’re thinking ”Ten hours? Ha! I can read more than that in one weekend,” then we challenge you to read 100. Our outrageously popular prize shirts are back for all ages (while supplies last), so you can show off your serious reader cred.
Inspire: Are you inspired to tackle a project, learn a skill or try something new? Use the Inspire tracker to set your personal goal, then follow the steps to bring your dream to life. Last year, people learned a musical instrument, grew crystals at home and even made jam for the first time. The satisfaction of achieving your goal is a pretty sweet prize all on its own, but if you tell us your story we’ll sweeten the deal with a drawing entry. Inspire More: Grab your family and friends to join in the fun! If you’re one of the 5,000-plus kids and teens or nearly 900 adults who participated last year, you know that Summer Learning can be awesome on your own or with a group. Try challenging someone to race you to 100 hours of reading or work towards a goal together. This is just the start of everything you can do this summer. Let your creativity loose with crafts, DIY, STEM and more hands-on learning and fun. Page through this issue of Inspire and find incredible headliner performances like Science Circus and Bushwick Book Club for kids, field trips to Museum of History and Industry and Uwajimaya for teens, and award-winning authors like Megan Chance and Jim Lynch for adults. At Kitsap Regional Library, our mission is to inspire you to dream more, learn more, do more and be more. Start tracking your summer on page 15!

Learning something cool is as easy as 1-2-3 Whether you’re 9, 19 or 99, summer is a great time to try new things, and the Library is here to help.
1. Dream of something you’d like to learn or do. Write your goal here. Ideas: Make a stop motion film, start a garden, learn a language or play the ukulele — the possibilities are endless.
2. Write at least three ways you are going to learn more. Ideas: Talk with staff at the Library, download a book at KRL.org, attend a class listed in Inspire, find a great website or enlist a local expert to join in the fun. 1. 2. 3.
3. Tinker, experiment, practice, create! Keep notes here as you go. Ideas: Keep a journal and ask yourself questions. What are your next steps? What’s working or not? What do you want to try differently?

foundation Behind the Scenes of Summer Learning S
ummer is an exciting time for the Library and all the people who participate in reading challenges, events and activities. In the last two years, Summer Reading has evolved into Summer Learning and now involves the whole family. It’s been exciting to see how the annual 100-hour reading finishers range from families with young children at one end of the spectrum to at least one centenarian so far. Behind the scenes, the Library Foundation works year-round to fund Summer Learning, our biggest annual Jaime Forsyth program. For a long Executive Director, Kitsap Regional time, we have been Library Foundation able to fund it with help from our Friends of the Library groups and Kitsap Community Foundation, but as participation increases, so do costs. Recently, the Robert Reverman Foundation stepped in with a five-year pledge, wanting to make sure that the Library can continue to inspire and engage the community without limits. I had the pleasure of meeting with Executive Director of the Reverman Foundation, Julie Benson, to hear more about why our Library was so honored. Immediately, Julie said education is one of their areas of focus, and the Library certainly fits that. Beyond that, there were personal reasons for Julie. ”I wanted to impact the community I live in,” said the recent Issaquah-toPort Orchard transplant. ”And I like that Summer Learning includes the whole family. There aren’t enough

ways to bring families and communities together.” Julie spoke at length about the importance of libraries in her own life. Before launching the Robert Reverman Foundation in her father’s honor, Julie had a multifaceted sales career. ”The Library helped me so many times,” said Julie. ”A Librarian showed me the business reference databases and I used them throughout my career. I appreciated that all of the resources are available to anyone for free.” At the Kitsap Regional Library Foundation, we often hear heartfelt stories like these, where people are moved to make a generous donation in recognition of the role the Library
has played in their lives. We want to give a special thank you to the Robert Reverman Foundation for being a part of bringing Summer Learning to our community and helping to ensure its vitality for a long time to come. Kitsap Regional Library Foundation inspires donors to support the Library beyond the means of public funding, raising funds from individuals, foundations, businesses and community organizations. Programs like Summer Learning, BiblioTEC and One Book, One Community are essential to achieving the mission of the Library and are only possible through this additional support.
