from the director Are You Up for the Challenge?

T

oday, I planted peas. Although I have always enjoyed gardening and yard work, growing vegetables has never been a part of my spring and summer routine. But, today, I changed all of that—by participating in Kitsap Regional Library’s Summer Inspire Challenge over the next two months. I have set a goal, created a plan and, hopefully, this summer will celebrate my success by harvesting some really great sugar snap and snow peas. Employees throughout our Library are participating in this inspire challenge. Not only are we hoping that they will have fun doing it, but will also serve as role models by sharing their experiences with our library patrons as our Summer Learning program kicks into high gear in June. For nearly a century, local libraries have offered summer reading programs where kids compete to see who can read the most books. Research has shown, time and time again, the importance of reading over the summer so that students don’t lose academic ground when they start back to school in the fall. Avoiding the “summer slide” is a critical component for educational success, especially for students from lower income communities. Studies also show that along with reading skills, kids also need to flex their math and science muscles over the summer to prevent learning loss. And that is where your public library comes in—we are here to provide inspiration for your entire summer with science, math and reading fun, creating

Jill Jean, director of Kitsap Regional Library.

We are here to provide inspiration for your entire summer with science, math and reading fun, creating learning opportunities for the entire family. learning opportunities for the entire family. Some of this summer’s highlights will include: yy A three little pigs building challenge yy Coding for teens—taught by teens yy Adventures in bug eating yy Be a s’more scientist yy A six week series of genealogy classes yy A “tinker” lab for the whole family In addition to participating in our summer programs, I invite all kids, teens, adults and families to join me in entering our Summer Inspire Challenge. Just like I did—set a goal,

make a plan and share your successful story by submitting your tracker and entering our drawing. Not only will you have a chance to win some wonderful prizes, but you can be that person who inspires others through their accomplishments. This summer vow to learn something new. Grow something, cook up a science experiment, brush up on a language skill, improve your golf swing, perform a magic trick or learn to play the ukulele—the possibilities are endless. Most importantly, have fun and remember to tell your learning story to motivate others. I will let you know how my peas turn out. Have a terrific summer!

vocabulary … about colors and shapes in natures.

Summer is a beautiful time in Washington. Using the things you see on a nature walk you can talk about the different colors and shapes of trees, flowers, rocks or the sun! Recognizing and pointing out colors and shapes allows children to feel confident about their surroundings and engaging in conversation this way promotes natural learning.

sing

… a silly song with your child that incorporates movement and repetition.

“The Waves on the Beach” (To the tune of “the wheels on the bus”) The waves on the beach go swish swish swish (move arms back and forth) Swish Swish Swish Swish Swish Swish The Waves on the beach go swish swish swish All day long

read

The crabs on beach go snap snap snap (open and close hands like pinchers) snap snap snap snap snap snap The crabs on the beach go snap snap snap All day long

… a silly story about reading.

Suggestion: (Let Me Finish!) by Minh Le. Summer is a great time for pleasure reading. This silly story about a boy who just wants to finish his book will have you and your child laughing at the absurdity and enjoying the beautiful illustrations. This is a perfect book to kick off your summer reading challenge; Reading together is a great way to reach those 100 hours!

write

… in the sand at the park or the beach.

Write in the sand with a stick or get extra silly and use your toes! Playing with sand is a fun tactile experience for children and provides a great opportunity for practice where mistakes are easily wiped away.

play

talk

… with water.

We are surrounded by water here in the Pacific Northwest and summer is the best time to take advantage of it. Whether it’s a pool, a lake or a garden hose, playing and swimming in water helps develop fine motor skills, language development and social-emotional growth.

Inspire.

Set a goal, get a prize. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

Whether you’re 9, 19 or 99, summer is a great time to try new things, and we’re here to help.

1. Dream of something you’d like to learn or do. Write your goal here. Ideas: Raise chickens, make a film, learn a language, write a book, study dinosaurs, build a robot, experience new cultures and places, or play the guitar — the possibilities are endless.

2. Write at least three ways you are going to learn more. Ideas: Talk with staff at the Library, use your library card to explore a tutorial on Lynda.com, attend a class listed in Inspire, find a great website, or enlist a local expert to join in the fun.

3. Celebrate success! Share your story. What did you learn? What did you love? Would you do anything different if you could do it again?
