Discover Summer pg. 10

YOUR FREE GUIDE TO CLASSES & CULTURE JUN.JUL.AUG. 2019

from the director Avoiding the “summer slide” is a critical component for educational success, especially for students from lower income communities. Studies also show that, along with reading skills, students need to practice math and science concepts during the summer to prevent learning loss.

L

ast summer, 1,140 Kitsap residents accepted our Summer Challenge by setting a personal learning goal and tracking their progress. Some of my favorite celebration stories included:

I learned that writing in cursive isn’t as hard as it seems. My favorite part was writing jokes in cursive. If I had to do it again, I would make up a game to help me learn more.—Samantha, age 9

My family and I started a hive in our backyard. We learned how to care for honeybees and have planted more flowers that they love. I love reading books with my children about bees and watching them do hive inspections (they are 6 and 3 years old).—Jennifer, age 36

I even tried my hand at planting peas and thoroughly enjoyed snacking on them for several months last summer. This summer, I am expanding my garden to include red raspberry bushes that I am going to plant along a sunny fence line.

I wanted to perfect my gluten-free pie crust. I found a blend of rice flour, tapioca flour and corn starch that makes an amazing crust. Then, I entered a pie I baked in the Washington State Fair and brought home two ribbons!—Nick, age 35 I summited Mount Baker this summer! It was extremely difficult, with extreme elevation gains. It may not have been fun, but I know now that I can do anything.—Denali, age 18

Jun.Jul.Aug. 2019

Employees throughout our Library are also participating in the Staff Summer Challenge. Not only are we hoping that they will have fun doing it, but that they will also serve as role models by sharing their experiences with our Library patrons as the Summer Learning program launches in June. For nearly a century, local libraries have offered summer reading programs where kids compete to see who can read the most books. Research continues to show the importance of reading over summer so that students don’t lose academic ground when they start school in the fall.

That is where your public Library comes in—we are here to provide inspiration for your entire summer with science, math and reading fun, creating learning opportunities for the entire family. Be sure and check out some of these programs at your local Library: Teen Ukulele Camp, Comic Book Movie Nights, Burke Museum Mobile, Art Mondays and trail programs featuring Jennifer Pharr Davis, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. In addition to joining a summer program or two, I invite all kids, teens, adults and families to join me in entering our Summer Challenge. Just like I did—set a goal, make a plan and share your success by submitting your tracker and entering our drawing for one of the three prizes that will be available at each of our Library locations. Not only will you have a chance to win a wonderful prize, but you can be that special someone who just may inspire others into action. Perfect your golf swing, raise some chickens, learn Spanish or how to download photos—the possibilities are endless! Most importantly, have fun! Enjoy a terrific summer.

Discover how the Banker Family and Denali used there Summer Challenge tracker to set goals and reach for their dreams.

Read More 2019 Jun.Jul.Aug. 15

Step outside. What do you see? Washington is filled with natural wonder. From the evergreen forests and mountains to the waters of the Puget Sound, there is so much to discover in the Pacific Northwest. With awe-inspiring destinations like the many islands, rivers and volcanoes in our own backyard, there’s no better time to go out and explore than summer vacation. Last year the Banker family (Adam, Lori, and children Ava, Liam and Kellen) took that idea to heart. Using the Summer Challenge Tracker (pg. 13), the Bankers chose a goal of hiking together. With guide books borrowed from the Library, the Bankers were able to find close-to-home hikes that everyone enjoyed. “We live in a place that has great outdoor resources.” Adam explained. “Our youngest was getting to the age where he can keep up with everyone so we decided to go hiking more.” The Banker family explored Lake Gazzam and the Grand Forest on Bainbridge Island, Port Townsend and Fort Worden, but the Dungeness Spit beachside hike in Sequim was voted the family favorite. “It was a nice way to get out with everyone and spend some time together,” Lori reflected. “With kids at such different ages, it’s hard to find things that everybody wants to do and this seemed to be something that everyone was on-board with.”

Adam added, “It’s great to have a Discover Pass because it motivates you to use it. It inspired us to see how many times we could get out and explore as a family.” Another Summer Challenge aficionado, Denali Sanders, used her Summer Challenge Tracker to help pursue a goal of mountaineering. Through support from local Venture Scouts, Denali took her summer goal to the very summit of Mount Baker - an impressive 10,781 feet above sea level! “The first day on Mount Baker we climbed around 1,000 feet up, two miles to base camp. Setting up the tent proved difficult. We put five large rocks inside and the wind was so strong, it scooted the rocks and the tent along the ground.” she said.

Baker?’ That helped me gain perspective that I try to remember even now.” Denali attends Utah State University which sits at the mouth of Logan Canyon. Since summiting Mount Baker, she has gone on several more adventures including two smaller summits in the Cache National Forest and a North Cascades summit back home. Looking ahead, Denali shared some of her future mountaineering endeavors: “I’ve planned a week-long tour of Utah National Parks with my friends and when I come back to Washington over the summer, I would love to summit Mount Rainier.”

Once she settled in, she asked her group leader what time they’d be waking up for the summit climb. “He said, ’12 in the morning’, laughed a little bit and crawled into his tent. I assumed he was joking until we were woken up by someone shaking our tent close to 12:30 a.m.” After equipment checks, breakfast and preparation, they began the climb to summit at 2 a.m. “It was dark except for our headlights and the stars as we started slowly trudging up the huge hill above base camp. We took frequent breaks to navigate around crevasses hundreds of feet deep, so we had a chance to look behind us and watch the Puget Sound get lighter and lighter. I still think that was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.” Denali reached the summit after 10 hours of nonstop climbing. “It was absolutely breathtaking. We were incredibly lucky to have climbed on an absolutely cloudless day. We could see in all directions for hundreds of miles, overlooking the San Juans, Seattle, Bremerton, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. Rocky, dark jagged peaks rose around us on all sides, but we were so much higher than all of them.” “This experience was incredibly impactful.” She continued. “First, backpacking and camping has helped me become a better planner. I have a greater understanding of how to have safe and successful adventures wherever I am.” A more personal benefit Denali felt after completing her summit was a boost in her confidence. “I remember waking up the morning after summiting feeling extremely sore. I thought to myself, ‘why would I feel bad about my body when it can do something like summiting

Just like any uphill climb, achieving your goals may seem daunting, but it starts with a solid first step. This summer, we encourage you to find something you’d like to do and try it. The Summer Challenge Tracker will help to identify your goal, plot the steps towards it and track your progress to completion. Share your experience with the Library for a chance to win one of our Discover Summer prizes. The Summer Learning program is packed full of fun (pun intended), but it serves a greater purpose in preventing ‘summer slide’, a regression of academic skills during the summer months. Last year 7,690 kids, teens and adults accepted our 10-Hour Reading Challenge. An additional 2,616 individuals took on the 100-Hour Reading Challenge and earned one of the highly sought-after Summer Learning T-shirts, which are back this year with a new Pacific Northwest design. By extending learning throughout summer, kids maintain their academic placement outside of school, and it’s great for adults too. The Summer Learning program encourages families to work as a team to develop a lifelong love of learning. From June 1 through Aug. 31, the Kitsap Regional Library will have tons of exciting events to supplement your summer fun. Take advantage of the sunshine and longer days by grabbing your trusty backpack and get out there, to the Library and beyond. So what are you waiting for? Your adventure starts here.

Parents and caregivers; support your role as your child’s first teacher and promote school readiness. Each kit is themed with books, educational toys and an activity guide. With 20 kits to choose from, you can pick up a new kit each week to make learning fun! Ages 3-7. Search for "Early Learning Kit" in the catalog to check one out. Jun.Jul.Aug. 2019

Talk... Summer is here and there’s never been a better time to get moving and get outside! Engage your child in observations made from the world around you. Not only does this increase your child’s cursory knowledge of the world, it also teaches them valuable inquiry and data-gathering skills!

Sing... Recognizable, fun songs encourage dancing, which develops better motor coordination in kids. Here’s a few tunes to kick-start your “Summer Songs for Kids” playlist: “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” Santigold, “Groove is in the Heart” Deee-Lite, “Mr. Blue Sky” Electric Light Orchestra, “You Make My Dreams Come True” Hall and Oates, “Soulful Strut” Young Holt Unlimited, “You’re My Best Friend” Queen.

Read... Books trigger critical thinking and inspire deep conversations— even with toddlers! Mac Barnett’s Shape Trilogy, “Triangle”, “Square”, “Circle” is a huge hit with the little ones. Sit down with the series and enjoy the perfect pacing and dry wit, paired with the simple, beautiful illustrations of Jon Klassen.

Write... Planning a nature walk or a trip to the beach? Letter knowledge and print awareness are possible anywhere! Make a fun activity out of finding the perfect letter writing stick and get creative. Don’t worry, mistakes are easily swept away by the wind and waves!

Play... Fred Rogers once said, “Play is serious learning.” Through play, children develop their own narratives and if you’re lucky, they’ll share their stories with you as they explore. Support pretend play. These experiences help children navigate the world around them with increased confidence and self-esteem.
