YOUR FREE GUIDE TO CLASSES & CULTURE SEP. OCT. NOV. 2019

from the director Feel free to talk to one of our talented adult services librarians. Adult Services Librarian, Peggy Branaman has her own business support following at the Poulsbo Branch. Peggy is masterful at unlocking the secrets of foundation grants or any of the business building tools that the Library offers online, such as Reference USA. Adult Services Librarian, Carina Wood at the Silverdale Branch, also assists and supports those interested in seeking small business advice. Like Kevin, Peggy and Carina are able to work individually with entrepreneurs, inviting all to Make an Appointment, call or email them at the Library.

O

n Thursday, August 1, the Kitsap Regional Library formally opened a Small Business Development Center at our Poulsbo location, further enhancing the business support our library system already provides. Through a partnership with Western Washington University, this new service is free thanks to the generous support of Kitsap Bank, Kitsap Credit Union, First Federal and the City of Poulsbo. Currently, a similar Small Business Development Center (also under the auspices of Western Washington University) is located in Bellingham. According to 2018 statistics, this SBDC supported 325 clients, gave six businesses a new start, saved or created 315 jobs and produced over $12.8M in new investments.

Sep.Oct.Nov. 2019

Although most Small Business Development Centers are usually hosted by universities, colleges and state economic development agencies, I know that our already business-oriented Poulsbo Branch will be a wonderful location for this service. The SBDC will offer one-on-one confidential business counseling, accessing capital, marketing, technology development, international trade and much more. Kevin Hoult, who started his SBDC career with Western Washington University in 2006, will help get the Center up and running. Kevin, who previously worked at SBDC in Renton, Mount Vernon and Port Angeles, will serve a temporary six-month appointment as Kitsap County SBDC Director, with a search for a permanent director scheduled to begin this Fall.

To quote one aspiring business person, “This is AMAZING! I just got these CHILLS!

Please come and visit our Small Business Development Center soon. If you or anyone you know is interested in business support, please set an appointment by calling (360) 447-8788 or emailing at kitsapSBDC@wwu.edu.

Dream More to Be More A small business success story Left: Tovi Wilkins, Right: Supapan Doyle, Center: Kamal Achaoui

T

he journey towards owning a small business begins with an idea. But what do you do with that idea? How do you proceed? It turns out, that question has stumped a lot of people. In turn, many small business concepts don’t get past the consideration phase before the idea is packed away or simply abandoned. For the average person, kickstarting a small business is a huge investment of time and money, with many market research resources costing thousands of dollars just to gain access. Within the small business world, there are licenses to apply for, locations to secure, demographics to identify and so much more. This steep learning curve is often the crux between the small businesses that go to launch and the ideas that end up in the basement. But, for individuals who are undaunted in pursuit of their dream, the Poulsbo Branch offers hope in a Small

Business Development Center (SBDC), with comprehensive resources free to patrons. Adult Services Librarians, Peggy Branaman and Carina Wood are eager to support you. Their individual appointment sessions open up communication on business opportunities and connections that can support you. They are experts in identifying the resources to help you and can guide you through the process of using them.

Referring to the Library, Alanna Imbach, CEO and Co-Founder of Vibe Coworks said, “We have this resource available that very few people know about or understand how it could apply to what they’re doing in the professional world. We think of the Library as a place to go for escapism, you know? But I had never put the two and two together, like, this is something that could actually help me propel my business forward or help with the research I need to be doing. So that converted me,” she said with a smile, “and I became a huge advocate for the resources that are there.”

Peggy and Carina are involved members of the small business community and have worked sideby-side with other organizations that support the growth of Kitsap County. This includes Vibe Coworks, a coworking space offering connection opportunities with industry leaders in a communityfirst, supportive setting steps away from the Poulsbo Branch. Adult Services Librarian, Carina Wood and patron

Now Vibe Coworks and the Library have teamed up to create Data Days, a meeting centered around market research, lead by Peggy and Carina at the Vibe Coworks building. This meeting is open and free to the public, every second Wednesday of the month.

even more because of her belief in me. You don’t meet many people like that. You can sit there for hours because it’s not phony, it’s real genuine knowledge, education, love, compassion, all in one person. I wish I had recorded it. I could have stayed the whole day.”

“To have the Library be a hub for connecting people is unique and the SBDC makes Poulsbo a powerhouse for small business.” Carina explained. “I like giving people courage to try. I’m a believer in small business. I’m a champion of it.” Another champion of business mentored by Peggy is Tovi Wilkins: a military barber and mother of nine who was encouraged through her church to pursue opening up her own small business.

“It’s not just, ‘oh, I own a business’, there’s more to it than that.” Tovi explained, “You’ve got to know all the stuff that goes into it.” With her dream and her faith driving her forward, Tovi took on business classes through Olympic College, went to Full Sail University for Media Communication and involved herself in the BE$T (Business Education Support Training) program. It was there that her mentor at BE$T encouraged her to meet with Peggy in Poulsbo. Tovi originally approached the appointment with the launch of a skincare product called Top to Bottom in mind, but once she met with Peggy, the wheels really began to turn on what she could accomplish. “She is full of knowledge, she is a Library,” as Tovi explained her heartfelt experience. “She inspired me to do

you need it. I would always recommend you go there whether you’re in business or not, because any resource you can get to understand before you get in it – those things are important to know. Surround yourself with people who are like-minded that can help you. Anybody who’s even interested in owning a business should go out there.” For more information on Tovi's businesses, check out her website: theloungebyconsele.com

Tovi Wilkins outside her business, Barber Lounge

The appointment paid off. Crediting her faith and learnings along the way, Tovi was able to successfully launch her business, La Boutique in Downtown Bremerton in February, 2016. Shortly after, Tovi and her husband Reuben obtained the Barbershop Lounge next door which opened in October, the same year. Tovi has since opened up her Barber Lounge to other aspiring barbers who want to learn the ropes. Through hands-on study, Tovi teaches the reigns of the business and hair world through a comprehensive Hair Designers apprenticeship program. And that’s not all! As of June 30, 2019, Tovi has launched her third small business – a new Barber Lounge now open on Bainbridge Island. As an accomplished small business owner and professional, Tovi’s enthusiasm towards the Library’s small business services is unmatched. “What I learned is business for everything I do: buying a house, running a business, going to school, everything is business. One of our favorite Library programs to engage with kids is “To the Library.” Each year, every third grader in Kitsap County takes a field trip to Kitsap Regional Library. Students enjoy a tour of the branch, participate in a scavenger hunt and take home their own book and drawstring bag to keep. For many of them, it’s their first time at a Library. For many more, this is the day they receive their very own library card. Third grade is the perfect age for the Library field trip because it’s an educational turning point where students transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. Research shows that students who are not reading at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school or fail to graduate on time. To combat this, the Library aims to create a deep, lasting relationship between kids and their Library, starting with the "To The Library" field trip.

Peninsula Community Health Services at the Library Check out your books, check out your health. Peninsula Community Health Services and Kitsap Regional Library have partnered to bring accessible healthcare to your local Library location. Need insurance or help navigating resources? Are you struggling with substance abuse, stressed or feeling sick? We want to help. The Kitsap Regional Library is partnering with Peninsula Community Health Services to bring medical support to patrons in need. The PCHS Mobile Behavioral Health Clinic strives to provide the same quality services offered in a more accessible setting. The Medical Mobile Clinic puts medical services on wheels and extends access to people with transportation or other access issues. The mobile clinic has the latest in medical equipment, technical support and has wheelchair access.

“KRL was recommended to our mobile program by several community partners, as it is a place where everyone can feel welcome. It is a comfortable, safe place to find out things about the community and about oneself. It prides itself on engaging people on all walks of life and providing the same high-quality service to people regardless of where they are on life’s journey. Given this tremendous overlap with our mission, it is not surprising that this partnership has been such a success!” - Anthony Lyon-Loftus, MPH, MSHS, PA-C Associate Medical Director, Peninsula Community Health Services

Early Learning Kits 18

Sep.Oct.Nov. 2019

Parents and caregivers, support your role as your child’s first teacher and promote school readiness. Each kit is themed with books, educational toys and an activity guide. With 20 kits to choose from, you can pick up a new kit each week to make learning fun! Search for "Early Learning Kit" in the catalog to check one out. Ages 3-7

Early Learning Activities Write... using different mediums Writing or scribbling in different mediums combines fine motor skills, writing practice and sensory experience. Using a stick, help your child write their name in the sand or mud when spending time outdoors. While baking pies, have your child use their fingers to write letters in the flour spread on the table. Play... with puppets Playing with puppets helps a child grow their imagination. Make hand puppets together out of brown lunch bags or old socks. Create stick puppets using popsicle sticks and old magazine pictures. Use stuffed animals and make them talk. Then, create a story together and put on a puppet show. This will help with language and vocabulary development, story structure, sequencing and comprehension.

Sing... a silly song that incorporates movement and repetition “Autumn Leaves Are Falling Down” Tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb Autumn leaves are falling down, (Flutter fingers down) Falling down, falling down. (Flutter fingers down) Autumn leaves are falling down, (Flutter fingers down) Falling on the ground. (Flutter fingers down to the ground)

Read... a story about some Fall food favorites “Apples and Pumpkins” by Anne Rockwell is a great picture book to learn about apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Visit a nearby farm and compare the things you see in the book to items and activities on a real farm. Once you’ve picked some apples and pumpkins, find delicious recipes in books like, “How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World” by Marjorie Priceman or “Pumpkin Time!” by Erzsi Deàk.

The wind will blow them round and round (Walk or spin in a circle) Round and round, round and round. (Walk or spin in a circle) The wind will blow them round and round (Walk or spin in a circle) All around the town.

Talk... about the sounds in nature Nature is full of different sounds year round. Go to places like the beach or the woods and talk about the sounds you hear. Ask your child what they notice and what the sounds could be. What kind of animals do they hear? Can they hear the wind in the trees? What human sounds do they hear: talking, cars, boats? For extra fun, try to make the sound yourselves.
