Short and sweet with light traffic, Kitzbühel’s training circuit with a hint of “Giro d’Italia”. A steep ascent to Astberg (up to 12 %) and the impressive “Best of” Kitzbühel mountain panorama!

From Kitzbühel town centre take the Schwarzseestraße to Reith. 400 m after the football field in Reith turn left onto the Astbergweg. From there (755 m) you make an elevation gain of about 425 metres on a quiet, narrow road with a constant ascent (12 %) winding up the Astberg (1,180 m). Keep left at both of the two distinctive crossroads (“Hollenauer Kreuz” and “Sonnenlift”). Beautiful farm houses. Splendid views of the Kitzbühel mountains: the nearby Wilder Kaiser, the Kitzbüheler Horn, the Hahnenkamm and the Große Rettenstein. To the top of the pass - Bergbauernhof “Kathen” - a short and trouble free gravel track.

A rapid and winding descent to the mountain village of Ellmau (820 m). Take the side road on the right side of the valley to Going and Stanglwirt. Then head to Reith. Before the bridge at Gasthof Reinache (722 m, km 21.7) turn onto the Astbergweg and over the “kleinen Astberg” (835 m) to Reith (762 m). In the centre of Reith turn left towards the Hotel Pointner, pass the farms “Waching”, “Kleinlehen” and “Rummeln” (850 m) and continue onto Oberndorf (Schmidboden). World-class panorama! Cross over the valley at the “Rass & Dorner” and follow the Römerweg back to Kitzbühel.

This tour starts along the Römerweg towards St. Johann, then continues towards Fieberbrunn. After the underpass look out for the left turn to the airport and join the cycle path. Some glorious short and sharp ascents (a few up to15 %) to Fieberbrunn. Ride a few kilometres along the Hochkönig-Bundesstraße (B164). At the junction for the Fieberbrunn cable cars turn right in the direction of Walchau | Dandlerau and continue as far as the Gasthof “Eiserne Hand”. Here turn left and follow the slight ascent to Hochfilzen-Zentrum (1,000 m above sea level). From here through the War-

mingtal and along the side road to St. Ulrich, then follow the PillerseeLandesstraße to Waidring. After about 8 km on the B178 towards St. Johann (the cycle path is very winding; it is not worth taking!) in Erpfendorf (Steinbacher insulation factory) turn right onto the state road towards Kössen. After about 1 km, and passing the bridge over the Großache, turn left onto the old state road to St. Johann. From here return to Kitzbühel through Weitau | Sperten, Oberndorf and then Rerobichl to Reith and along the Schwarzseestraße. (see Kitzbühel Circuit No. 1).

Kitzbüheler Horn The “horn” is legendary. With gradients of up to 22.3 %, it is the steepest biking mountain in Austria. A truly epochal ascent. Compete against the best!

Ride from the centre of Kitzbühel along the Römerweg in a northerly direction and turn off at the farm “Höglern” onto the Kitzbühler Horn panoramic road. After a short while you come to the original start (791 m) of the Kitzbüheler Horn Mountain Bike Race. It is a good idea to take a short break here, have a look at the information board and enjoy a refreshing drink. 875 m ascent over 7.1 km on the steepest bike mountain in Austria follows. The ascent gradient is 12.5 % on average, peaking at 22.3 %. After the first toll gate (1,013 m) follow the first “ramp”. Conserve your energy

until the Goinger Alm (1,424 m) as it is here where the crucial part begins. Over 1 km with a constant ascent gradient from 16 to 22.3 %, subsequently levelling out in the last of the altogether 18 curves. The goal is the Alpenhaus (1,666 m) on the Kitzbüheler Horn. Route record holder Thomas Rohregger: “the Kitzbüheler Horn is truly the Streif of cycle sport! There are practically no rest opportunities. You have to go full power from start to finish!” Incidentally, Tommy’s racing gear ratio on the Horn is 39|27, and his best time is 28 minutes 24 seconds.

Kitzbüheler Horn - 22,3 %. Mythos Kitzbüheler Horn

The steepest “bike mountain” in Austria. “The Kitzbüheler Horn is one of the most difficult ascents in international cycling – comparable with Alpe d’Huez!”, says Tyrolean cycling legend, Georg Totschnig, on the climb to the Alpenhaus.

Every year about 10,000 hobby cyclists storm the mountain, which in Austria rivals only the Großglockner in terms of popularity. With the help of permanently installed timekeeping devices, riders can record their times on an annual ranking list as part of the „Krone KitzHorn Challenge“. The myth of the Kitzbüheler Horn. The Kitbüheler Horn became legendary in cycling during the 1970s and 1980s thanks to international mountain bike racing (“Europe’s Greatest Hill Climb Grand Prix”). In those days the “Horn” was considered the most difficult mountain test in Europe. Kitzbühel’s local mountain has been included in the Austrian cycling circuit every year since 2000.

Over the decades, international greats such as Cadel Evans (AUS), Lucien van Impe (BEL), Beat Breu (SUI), Riccardo Ricco (ITA), Wolfgang Steinmayr (AUT) and Georg Totschnig (AUT) have all earned a place on the winners’ list. The route record-holder, Thomas Rohregger, counts the Kitzbüheler Horn as one of the top 3 most difficult mountains in international cycling. Legendary Tyrolean cyclist, Wolfgang Steinmayr, also cherishes the visual charm of the “Horn”. “There exist but very few difficult mountain routes of this kind in international professional cycling with such a spectacular setting”. 46 : :

„Climbing“ Highlights

1 Kitzbüheler Horn (1,666 m) and the summit (1,996 m) Austria’s steepest “bike mountain”, a genuine cult mountain among cyclists. Unrivalled in steepness - both in maximum (22.3 %) and average gradients (12.5 %). Only a few other mountains around the world can surpass the toughness of the “Horn”. 2 Großglockner (2,506 m) Both the mountain peaks and mountain passes are true emblems of Austria. Every road cyclist must ride this mountain at least once in their life. An agreeable ascent gradient of 10 %, in comparison to the Kitzbüheler Horn. 3 Steinplatte (1,666 m) A serious hill-climb, resembling the Kitzbüheler Horn in terms of distance and gradient. 4 Ochsalm (1,470 m) A lovely mountain road in the Kitzbühel ski region, passing wonderful mountain pastures. 5 Enzinger Boden (1,480 m) and the Tauernmoos reservoir (2,104 m) A ride into the glacial world. A secret adventure: the unkempt but secluded road to Tauernmoos! 6 Loferer Alm (1,425 m) A typical ski region access road. A tough hill climb! 7 Griesner Alm (1,024 m) A wonderfully mellow mountain road, dignified by cycle races each year.

Our Top 10 Kitzbühel “Climbing” Highlights. So what makes road cycling so special in Kitzbühel? It must surely be the mountain passes complimented by the countless access roads into the ski regions. This infrastructure, created primarily with the winter season in mind, gives the cycling region just the right piquancy.

8 Hirschbichlpass (1,183 m) An unrivalled pass with ascent gradients of up to 30 %! The Hirschbichlpass can only be ridden out of the saddle. You couldn’t help but do a wheelie if you remained seated. There is nothing more to say about this pass ;-). 9 Winklmoos-Alm (1,160 m) Ski region approach road to Rosi Mittermaier’s homeland. 10 Filzensattel (1,290 m) and Dientner Sattel (1,370 m) Two delightful passes at the foot of the Hochkönig.
