Ski history is written here. And has been since 1892. Kitzbühel and skiing is a timeless and legendary association. Skiing has been popular here at the foot of the Hahnenkamm since the very first descent by ski pioneer, Franz Reisch. Toni Sailer's dream team continued to write history in the 1950s. Today, in addition to the world-famous ‘Streif ’ , a total of 60 ski runs attract winter sports enthusiasts. High above the town, 52 cable cars and lifts travel back and forth to an altitude of 2,000 m above sea level. 170 km of

downhill runs and 32 km of ski routes await wintersports enthusiasts upon arrival at the summit. The backcountry offers 230 km 2 of almost endless opportunities – and romantic ski lodges all along the route invite skiers to stop off.

The ski resort. The ski resort of Kitzbühel is among the most popular in the world. It is mainly sporty skiers that are drawn to the mountains of the ‘Gamsstadt’ (‘Chamois Town’).

Guaranteed snow. Magnificent powder runs, mogul ski pistes, top-rate carving fun and more than 24 km of black runs can be found here. Insiders appreciate the easily accessible backcountry. Back in 1908, ski pioneer Franz Reisch described the ski resort thus: ‘The Kitzbühel Alps combine extraordinarily rich snow, easy accessibility and an unsurpassed number of backcountry skiing routes.’

The Kitzbühel region has always been known for its unique microclimate. The winters here are traditionally long and rich in snow. The main reason for this is Kitzbühel’s geographic location, which guarantees long-lasting snowfall and large amounts of fresh snow. Furthermore, over 780 snow guns enhance the quality of the runs from the very start of the season.

Kitzbühel has thus been the first nonglacier ski resort in Austria to begin lift operations in autumn every year for the past few years. An average of around 150 days of operation (from November until early May) justify the reputation of the ‘Chamois Town’ as a resort with guaranteed snow.

1928 Hahnenkamm gondola – the first ski lift in Austria

This history is inextricably linked with that of Kitzbühel native Franz Reisch. Following preliminary ski attempts in December 1892, Reisch first managed to ski down the Kitzbüheler Horn – the first high Alpine ski run in Austria – on 15 March 1893. Reisch is thus one of the most important ski pioneers in the Alpine region.

1927 Founding of the Kitzbühel Ski School (known as the ‘Rote Teufel’ [‘Red Devils’] from 1950

The construction of the Hahnenkamm gondola as the first ski lift in Austria, the successes of Toni Sailer and his dream team, and the development of the Kitzbühel ski schools under ski instructor Karl Koller constitute further major milestones.

Between 1950 and 1960, six friends from Kitzbühel won a total of 27 medals at the Olympic Games and World Championship. They also had victories on every classic race slopes in the world. Toni Sailer was the star of this dream team. His victory at the VII Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo made him a global superstar overnight.

Freeriding and powder snow. Extreme skier Axel Naglich is not the only one who knows that in addition to the many ski routes, powder fans will find countless off-piste variations. The easily accessible backcountry covers some 230 km2, which corresponds to a surface area three times the size of Manhattan. Kitzbühel native Axel Naglich, whose first ever descent of the longest slope in the world was immortaalised in the film ‘Mount St. Elias’ is a huge fan of his

home: ‘A virtually endless abundance of off-piste variations can be accessed from the ski resort.’

Three highly recommended tours in the Kitzbühel area. : : Blaufeld Ski from Steinbergkogel over the crest towards the east (beware of snow cornices!) : : Past the Blaufeldalmen : : Be sure not to turn right into the relatively steep SO slopes too early : : Tour end: Cross-country skiing trail in front of the Auwirt guest house in Unteraurach. : : Stuckkogel – Pletzergraben Take a taxi to Oberaigen : : Travel by snow cat (transport only possible with a ski instructor!) to just below the summit of the Stuckkogel : : Five-minute ascent : : Tour end: Pletzergraben Fieberbrunn (taxi required). : : Brunnhofer Villa Ski down to the south from Eggl T-bar lift (B 9) to Brunnhofer Villa : : Watch out for scattered scarps and edges (avalanche risk) : : Via forest trails and pastures towards Hagstein : : Tour end: Hornbahn valley station.

WARNING! The ski tours are only outlined here in brief – navigation is sometimes critical! There is a risk of avalanches and crash hazards! We strongly recommend booking a local Kitzbühel mountain guide or ski instructor.

The Streif. Who doesn’t dream of conquering the legendary Streif themselves at some point? After all, it is the most famous descent in the world.

Outside of the Hahnenkamm races weekend, tricky passages such as the ‘Mausefalle’ jump, steep ‘Steilhang’ slope and ‘Hausbergkante’ jump and corner are classed as ‘extreme ski routes’ and therefore exclusively for expert skiers. The ‘Familienstreif ’ (‘Family Streif ’) is recommended for those not among this elite circle: the most extreme passages are bypassed, making the Streif a ‘red run’ on Kitzbühel’s piste map.
