About Skiathos
Relax and abandon yourself to the twin magic of the Aegean blue and the lush beauty of Skiathos 9
Location
LOCATION Skiathos lies at the center of the Greek realm, being the closest island to the eastern coast of the mainland among the group of the Northern Sporades. This cluster, once named Thessalian, or Magniton in antiquity, comprises several islands of various sizes, the most important of them being Skyros, Skiathos, Skopelos
and Alonissos. Skiathos is located north of the island of Evia and east of the district of Magnesia, 2.4 miles off the southern coast of Mount Pelion –home of the mythical Centaurs in antiquity. Its area measures 48 sq. km.

Legend
LEGEND Myth or dream? Once upon a time, thousands of years ago, two giant twins, Otus and Ephialtes, lived in a beautiful country named Greece. Even as small kids, they dreamed big. They wanted to pile Mt. Ossa on Mt. Olympus and Mt. Pelion on Mt. Ossa so as to make a ladder and climb to the sky. So, they sat by the sea and exercised by throwing pebbles into the water. They would pick round and broad pebbles and make them skid on the water surface with a sudden and skillful jerk of the wrist. The pebbles would bounce several times before sinking into the emerald waters of the Aegean Sea. From these pebbles later emerged the Sporades islands –Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos, Skyros and many other smaller islets.
14
Skiathos has retained its name unaltered since ancient times. The island is verdant and lush with pine forest, with shade everywhere. Its name is actually a composite of “skia” (shade) and the suffix “-thos” (denoting place) -meaning “shady place”. Some scholars have suggested that the name of the island originates in a shade cast from the east by the distant peninsula of Mt. Athos at sunrise. This version, however, is not substantiated, as the distance from Mt. Athos is too big for its shade to reach Skiathos.

Skiathos today
SKIATHOS TODAY Modern Skiathos is the garden of Eden dreamt by many a traveller, combining a lush landscape with long sandy beaches, coves and bays by the emerald waters of the Aegean Sea. It is a cosmopolitan hub with excellent tourism infrastructure –the only one of the Sporades with an airport- ideally twinning island traditions with modern comforts, respect for the natural environment and ecological awareness.
16
The island’s town itself is set in amphitheatric fashion around a sheltered bay divided in two by the little promontory of Bourtzi. Streets are narrow and slatepaved, the houses are small, two-storey and whitewashed, with tile roofs. Main street Papadiamanti is vibrant with shops and cozy café-bars. Tavernas and restaurants cater for all palates, and night life is fully in par with what mainland cities have to offer.
Climatic conditions
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS The tourist season on Skiathos extends from April to October, thanks to the island’s ideally mild and temperate climate. Winters are marked by relatively high rainfall, while the lush vegetation moderates the warm, sun-drenched summers –making them definitely
cooler in comparison to the Cyclades. The northerly meltemi winds also bring a much welcome respite from the heat in late July and early August. The average annual temperature is 17ο C.

Highlights
HIGHLIGHTS The rosy beaches With over 60 beaches where verdant forests meet golden sands and emerald waters, Skiathos offers a host of options for all bathing preferences. There are beaches with thin or coarse sand, small or large pebbles, bays and coves, sites that are fully organized with hotels, restaurants, sea sport facilities, sunbeds and umbrellas. Οthers are completely unspoiled –making you feel like a Robinson Crusoe who first sets foot on them. Two of Skiathos’s beaches, Koukounaries and Maratha, have been awarded the distinction of the Blue Flag.
Bourtzi Bourtzi is a small promontory connected with Skiathos via a bridge and divides the harbor in two, the old and the new. It used to be a fortress, of which only ruins remain, along with the point where the Church of Agios Georgios and the cistern of the fort once stood. Bourtzi today is a truly exceptional recreation area. The old primary school has been transformed into a cultural center and an open-air theater hosts a wide array of performances every summer. You will also find a municipal coffee shop in the pine wood, from where a staircase leads to a tiny beach.
Kastro The old fort of Kastro is located at a naturally fortified position at the island’s northern tip, where the locals sought refuge from pirate raids in the 14th century. It remained under Byzantine control until 1453, when it fell to the Venetians. In 1538 it was conquered by the Turks who held it until Greece was liberated after the revolution of 1821. It is worth visiting the Church of the Nativity of Christ, maintained in a very good condition. Kastro is not fully accessible by car and you will have to cover a short distance on foot.
Alexandros Papadiamantis Museum Alexandros Papadiamantis, born on Skiathos in 1851, is considered one of modern Greece’s foremost prose writers. His house in Skiathos town has been converted into a museum which provides a good representation of life on the island in the 19th century.
18
Highlights
Monasteries The old monastery of Evangelistria is also well worth a visit. Built in 1792, it is located in the northeastern part of the island. There are also the monasteries of Panagia Iconistria and Agios Haralampos.
Musical instruments of the world The municipal cultural center on Bourtzi hosts the private collection of the Monnier-Deliyianni family “Musical Instruments of the World”, considered unique in Greece. It includes 1,600 instruments from around the globe.
Wetland Lake Strofylia is found in the southeastern part of Skiathos, just behind the beach of Koukounaries, in a tranquil and enchanting setting. The wetland is supported by a number of European programs as a place of high environmental interest.
Entertainment
The range of options in Skiathos’s night life is on a par with what modern cities offer. Cafes, bars, musical and concert venues, an open-air cinema, theater and art events add a pleasant atmosphere to the cool evenings in the town’s alleyways.
Shopping Main street Papadiamanti and its adjacent streets feature aesthetically attractive shops and boutiques that will suit every taste and purse, offering from clothes, footwear, jewellery and accessories to works by accomplished artists and imaginative souvenirs for your loved ones.

Impeccable Greek hospitality with respect for the environment
OUR NEWS A scent of renewal is blowing through KIVO again this year. Award-winning chef Giannis Baxevanis oversees the menu at the KIVO Creative Greek Cuisine restaurant, while Omet oversees the menu at the KIVO Sushi Bar restaurant. The new initiatives, which aim to
enrich our guests’ stay with variety, include the Greek breakfast, cookery classes, a wine bar, yoga classes and alternative treatments, as well as our KIVO Food & Wine product range.
OUR PRINCIPLES The principle which governs KIVO and its human resources is Greek hospitality in aesthetic, comfortable and functional surroundings, with respect for the environment and ecological sensitivities. We have created a romantic, tranquil and discreet setting, ideal for couples who wish to spend their honeymoon, organize their weddings and engagements, celebrate their anniversaries or just renew their vows. Our goal is to ensure high quality services, covering and meeting our guests’ every wish while also providing any information necessary to make your stay on Skiathos as enjoyable as possible. We focus on the
22
Greek traditional cuisine, especially local island recipes, wishing in this way to also project our gastronomic tradition abroad. At the same time, for those with a penchant for the exotic, we have created a range of spicy delicacies of the modern Asian cuisine. We use pure, organic Greek ingredients, grown by ourselves or by selected producers in the broader area, with European certifications and quality control. Art in all its forms plays a dominant role throughout KIVO, backing the work of young and accomplished Greek artists.
KIVO Art & Gourmet Hotel
LOCATION Whitewashed buildings with tile roofs, scattered in a lush, four-acre estate on a low hill of Skiathos above Mikros Vasilias beach in the Katsaros area, with unlimited views of the endless Aegean blue, welcome you at KIVO Art & Gourmet Hotel –a 4-star facility with a distinct personality combining the comforts
of a great resort with the privacy of a boutique hotel. Décor marked by finesse, the artistic mood and the atmospheric spaces make KIVO Art & Gourmet Hotel an idyllic and romantic getaway and a unique experience for its visitors.
NEIGHBOURING AREAS West of Skiathos emerges the Pelion mountain range, which according to mythology, was the abode of the Centaurs –the half-man, half-horse creatures. The foothills of Mt. Pelion are laced with the beautiful coastline of Magnesia district, with the picturesque fishing villages. To the east are the islands of Skopelos and Alonissos –the sea area of which hosts a unique park for the protection of the Mediterranean
seal (Monachus-Monachus). Together with Skyros, lying to the southeast, and the smaller islets in the broader area, the three islands comprise the group of the Northern Sporades. To the south is the large island of Evia, while four beautiful islets, Megalos Tsougrias, Mikros Tsougrias, Arkos and Maragos, grace the area in front of Skiathos town harbour.

Hygiene standards
KIVO HYGIENE STANDARD Diamond Certified Hotel Hygiene standard at KIVO Art & Gourmet Hotel • Hospital-certified disinfectant used in bathrooms and on high-touch points like remote controls, telephones, headboards and doorknobs. • All bed linens changed before every check-in Individually-wrapped extra blanket in the closet. • All hotel rooms treated every month with a 2-hours Ultra Violet disinfectant session.
• Anti-microbial sofa tissue in all hotel rooms. • Split Air Conditioners cleaned before every check-in • Each bed is carefully dressed with silk pillow covers and bed covers in triple sheeting to prevent allergies and bedbugs. • The hotel also guarantees that all bed linens are replaced for each check-in.
Diamond Certified Hotel Hygiene Standard Elements Ultra Violet (UV) Sterilization Wands - Wands from Purelight are used to sterilize “high touch points” in the hotel such as telephone, light switches, door handles, bathroom fixtures and common areas. Purelight UV Wand - UVC Sterilizer for Surface and Air-Purelight XD
The filter blocks hazardous UV-A and UV-B and only emits germicidal wavelength. Purelight does not emit the waveband that generates Ozone. The filter gets dust mites blind so they stay unrecognized to death. The filter helps focusing to enhance sterilization efficacy and protect users from exposure.
How does the Purelight ultra violet sterilization wand work? The anti-microbial properties of UV-C light have been used since the 1930s to kill germs containing DNA and RNA (including bacteria, viruses, fungi and mold). While UV-C is invisible, given sufficient intensity and exposure, it can kill most of the germs responsible for causing illness. The Purelight has been tested by the FITI Testing Research Institute (Korea), KITASTO Research Center of Environmental Sciences (Japan), Q-LAB (USA) and the University of Milano (Ita-

Signed by award-winning chef Jérôme Serres Jérôme Serres was born in France in 1968. He is married, with two children. Upon graduating from France’s Ecole Hôtelière he began working at some fine Parisian restaurants, such as Le Doyen, or ’ l’Elysée du Vernet, of famous chef Bruno Cirino. In 1996 he opened his own restaurant, Le Champ D’ Allium, at the beautiful village of Lautrec, in the south of France. He attracted a discerning clientele right from the start and, within a year, had won a 16/20 grade in the Gault et Millau guide and his first Bib gourmand from the Guide Michelin. Looking for experiences abroad, he came to Greece in 2002 and collaborated with famous chef Jacques Chibois at the Spondi restaurant. A year later, Spondi won
46
its first Etoile Michelin and became a Relais et Chateaux member. It also swept up major Greek awards, including Best Restaurant of Athens. In November 2005, Jérôme opened a restaurant bearing his own name at the Eradinus Hotel in Athens, where his second Etoile Michelin came only four months later. In 2006 he accepted the challenge of upgrading and reorganizing the city’s historic Pil-Poul restaurant, which earned an Etoile Michelin 4 fourchettes rouges in January 2007. After eight highly successful years in Greece, he opened La Table Fine restaurant in Juneih, Lebanon, in 2010. This is widely regarded as one of the best culinary establishments in the country today.

He travelled to various European countries to gain experience from different cuisines and his talent was soon acknowledged with various awards from fairs, organizations and magazines, including the International Gastronomic Academy’s Chef de l’avenir. Athinorama magazine (Greece’s equivalent of Time Out) has written about him, “When shepherd’s needles, hartworts, dandelions and nettles are piled on the benches, the name of just one chef comes to mind: Giannis Baxevanis, the maestro of wild greens and herbs of the Greek earth!” And France’s Le Monde newspaper, “They called him ‘crazy’ when he dared to swap the fois gras for his wild greens. KIVO ART GALLERY The KIVO concept is based on art in all its forms, so a gallery in the center of town is an essential part of it. The main goal of KIVO Art Gallery is the projection of the work of contemporary and accomplished artists, Greek or foreign. Its exhibitions are marked by pluralism and diversity, both as regards the views presented and the means through which
these are expressed. We believe it is equally important to promote, project and disseminate the work of young artists, and for this reason we have established a group exhibition with works by new artists every summer. The gallery also organizes and supports other important events of a general cultural interest.
