Greetings! Thank you for taking the time to read our prospectus, which focuses on the values our school lives by. I hope you’ll also read the smaller companion booklet (for all the detailed information), visit our website, and even better, visit us in person! We’d love to show you around. Our vision is very clear; we’re here to develop the young people in our care, and to provide a place to learn where they feel challenged, supported and enriched. We expect high levels of achievement and involvement, so our students are equipped to create the best possible future for themselves and their world. It’s exciting to be in a school named after a real,

local and national hero, and to inspire our students to look up to our namesake. Brigadier James Hargest, veteran of two world wars and a Member of Parliament for Invercargill, is remembered for his tenacity, perseverance, integrity, and leadership – qualities which are valued just as much now, as then. For us, as staff, it means that we aim to epitomise education of superb quality. Here at Hargest, our twin campus school provides the best of both worlds. It provides a separate, secure, home-room based environment for Year 7-8’s (with the advantage of extensive specialist teaching), and a Year 9-13 campus where students are encouraged to look ahead and build a strong platform of values, experiences and qualifications. The “step up” from the Junior to the Senior Campus is now a tradition celebrating the coming of age of our students. Both the Junior and Senior Campus complement learning experiences in class with an enviable range of cultural, sporting, leadership and service opportunities. we respect each other The Hargest values create the standards for behaviour within our school. The cornerstones are clear expectations and boundaries based on mutual respect and fairness. A careful approach to student welfare ensures every student has support to cope with the teenage years. Our aim is for all students to develop to their potential. Hargest creates a caring, safe and orderly school environment in which students develop as respectful and considerate citizens. A restorative approach balanced with clear, consistent consequences means that students learn to take personal responsibility for their actions. Homeroom (Yrs 7-8) and Form teachers (Yrs 9-13) take a personal interest in the progress and

achievement of their students and report to parents on performance. They provide the first point of contact for parents.

The cornerstones are clear expectations and boundaries based on mutual respect and fairness Form teachers are supported by syndicate leaders and Deans who oversee the welfare and progress of year level groups. They are responsible for the placement of students and liaison with parents. The Guidance Team work with students and their families to provide a sound support base so that needs can be identified and addressed. Our three Counsellors offer a confidential, specialist service and help students work through a wide range of issues. Our four-person Careers team work hard to provide students of all ages with advice on appropriate course structures and career choices.

Hargest students know that they are expected to treat each other well. Strong emphasis is placed on positive relationships between staff and students and on effective classroom management.

we work hard At Hargest we recognise that a good work ethic is essential for success in school and in life. All students need high level skills with knowledge, understanding and positive attitudes in order to realise the potential they possess.

We have a strong tradition of academic excellence reflected by exceptional results in NCEA examinations at all levels across a diverse range of curriculum subjects We encourage you to view our results on the NZQA website: www.nzqa.govt.nz. Results in all senior school exams affirm that the school is maintaining its long-standing tradition of academic excellence. Hargest has a well established tradition of students winning academic scholarships and distinction awards in NCEA. Twenty-three NCEA scholarships were won by Hargest students in 2011, evenly shared by girls and boys over a wide range of subjects. Our Junior Campus students are given the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of academic challenges; Southspell, Science Fair, SmacMaths, BP Challenge, Kids Literature Quiz, ICAS, Speech

Awards and numerous other academic extension competitions are vigorously promoted. A similar pattern prevails at the Senior Campus. Each year students achieve in the top echelon of all these endeavours. A large number of senior students also receive scholarships for tertiary study from community funding organisations. Our staff are passionate about their teaching craft and model the value of hard work. It is their commitment, support and encouragement that enables Hargest students to achieve so highly in sporting, cultural and academic endeavours. Tutorials are frequently offered outside class time.

we take care of our environment Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hargest students benefit from extensive, far-sighted and high quality re-development including a number of BOT funded facilities such as the stunning Senior Campus Hargest Centre (Gym/Cafeteria complex). Homerooms on the Junior Campus all provide a warm, stimulating environment and are complemented by a state-ofthe-art Technology block.

Technology has been embraced at Hargest across all areas of the school

Students participate in initiatives to care for their environment locally (including keeping our school clean and tidy!), nationally and internationally. Vandalism is virtually unheard of, with students taught to be proud of their school environment and to look after all facilities and equipment well. Classrooms are rich in educational technology with students having ready access to interactive information systems. Students can safely access learning resources through extensive computer suites throughout both campuses and from their own homes.

Both libraries are electronic information centres. Parents have access through the interactive website to up-to-date information about student progress, attendance and pastoral systems. They can view the latest publications online and celebrate the successes of our students. The community is welcome to use our site after hours, and everyone is encouraged to take care of our facilities.

Our most able students are encouraged through extension and enrichment opportunities in our highly regarded Gifted and Talented programmes which operate at all levels from Year 7 to 13.

Students are grouped to ensure that they are challenged and supported in their learning needs in mixed ability classes within year levels. Mathematics is an exception where students can be regrouped between core subject classes to maximise their abilities in this area.

Others who need extra assistance are provided with this in a variety of ways. Special Needs students are catered for in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Student Support Centreâ&#x20AC;?, which forms a home base for varying degrees of mainstreaming.

All students have many opportunities to take on leadership roles throughout their time at Hargest through sports, our house systems and councils. Senior students provide leadership to their junior counterparts through Peer Support and mentoring programmes. In these ways, students are an important aspect of the leadership and development of our school. Our Outdoor Education programme encourages students to learn new skills and test their boundaries in a safe and risk managed environment. The focus for students in these experiences is to encourage team skills and leadership opportunities while challenging themselves and taking responsibility for each other. Our international and exchange students are a valued part of our school community. Their presence and involvement exposes our students to different perspectives, and enriches our cultural diversity. We encourage everyone to go out of their way to provide a friendly welcome to new students, whether International or Kiwi.

Boys and girls work, learn and interact in a natural setting reflecting the community of which they are part Our aim is that students will leave Hargest as young men and women equipped with the skills to manage themselves and relate to each other in an open and honest manner. Students have access to many classrooms and specialist teaching spaces during intervals and lunchtimes, often unsupervised by staff. This trust in the use of the facilities has created a culture at Hargest that reflects responsibility and honesty.

Self awareness and goal setting are encouraged from the first days at the Junior Campus. Students reflect on their abilities and weaknesses and set realistic and achievable short term goals for their own learning development. We are committed to working in partnership with students, parents and caregivers. Parents are kept well informed in candid interviews, in open written evaluations of student progress, and through numerous other contacts.

Our school has a culture of encouragement, friendship and fun The special relationships between staff and students and the life long friendships students form with each other are highly valued. Meanwhile, the success of Hargest alumni both at university and in their wide-ranging contributions to society are a testament to the quality of our co-education environment.

Hargest students are “can do” people; they acquire the attitudes, the dispositions, and the flexibility to make things happen Getting involved in any of the vast number of extra curricular opportunities supported at Hargest will make a significant difference to the well being and emotional balance of students who come here. Taking opportunities enables young people to develop life skills through teamwork, leadership, commitment and responsibility and to have fun while they are doing it. Our sporting, cultural and musical successes at local, regional and national levels are very impressive. These are made possible because of the commitment of staff and the Hargest community. Parents have a vital role in encouraging the success of our students. Parental support of the school values, uniform guidelines and high behaviour expectations are a source of strength. Taking an active part in various school events

including parent interview evenings, coaching, attending camps, right through to governance as a member of the Board of Trustees is something we encourage. Considerable effort is put into celebrating the successes of our students. This is done weekly in assemblies run by our head students, our marvellous monthly newsletters and our web site which reflects the positive efforts made by those at Hargest. It is also done through a range of other strategies such as Blues Awards (Academic and Sport), Scholarship Ceremonies, Service Awards, and regular prize draws at junior level for students demonstrating our values particularly well.

Our behaviour strategies model clear and definite principles. Consequences are a certainty; they are immediate, consistent and appropriate. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers whenever they have concerns. Our six simply stated values guide every aspect of what we do here at Hargest. Our students understand them and live them. They provide the ground work for a future that will reach out for them.

All students who live within the home zone described below and shown on the attached map shall be entitled to enrol at the school. Out of Zone Enrolments Each year the board will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in that year or in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how many out of zone places are available and will specify a date. If there are more enrolments than places available, applications will be processed by ballot in the following order of priority: First Priority: This priority category is not applicable at this school because the school does not run a special programme approved by the Secretary of Education.

Second Priority: will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students. Third Priority: will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students. Fourth Priority: will be given to applicants where a parent is a former student of the school. Fifth Priority: will be given to applicants who are children of board employees. Sixth Priority: will be given to all other applicants. If there are more applicants groups than there are places available, selection within each priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11 G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the results by mail. Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to provide proof of a sibling relationship, and applicants seeking fourth priority may be required to provide proof of their former attendance.
