Sergey Zavyalov
Teacher of English, New Zealand Institute of Choice Certificate in Language Teaching graduate “My career satisfies me mentally, spiritually and financially. I’ve already worked with a couple of hundred students and I’m definitely continuing to teach, at the New Zealand Institute of Choice and in evening classes. I might also join a tertiary institution to get another teaching qualification, maybe do a masters degree or even a PhD. The Certificate in Language Teaching is 100% relevant in class and for my professional development. I especially liked the practical lessons on Saturdays, but I loved all aspects of the programme. The staff were always helpful, and I enjoyed the everyday communication with my classmates and the tutors.”
Sun Ae Choi
Bachelor of Nursing student Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language graduate “English is an amazing tool that bridges people together. I decided to study the Graduate Certificate in English as an Additional Language at Unitec because I wanted to improve my English skills and learn more about Kiwi culture. Learning a language takes time but once you have started the journey it will expand your horizons. I have gained so much confidence through the language study and am now more accustomed to academic study. I can now have discussions with my classmates – it’s like a totally different world, one that I hadn’t experienced before. Last semester, for example, I got an A+ in my anatomy and physiology paper, and I think I am the only one. My English skills definitely helped me achieve that. I also get on pretty well with all of my classmates.”

Norka Mella
Chef Tutor, Auckland Hotel and Chefs Training School Certificate in English graduate “I’m originally from Chile where I trained and worked as a chef. I arrived in New Zealand on a stopover on my travels, and I instantly fell in love with this place and decided to live in this paradise. After I came to Auckland, I was working as a head chef in a catering company for several years but I dreamed of working as a chef tutor. Food is my greatest passion – I come from a country where family, food and celebration are one and the same. I really wanted to pass this love of food on to my students. The problem was that my English wasn’t really good enough for teaching. That’s why I decided to study the Certificate in English at Unitec. I just loved the multicultural student environment at Unitec, and the tutors were very supportive. Making a presentation in front of many people in a different language can be difficult, but the final class presentation about my work experience was fun and exciting at the same time. The programme made me more confident about my English skills and has helped me achieve my dream of being a chef tutor. I love being in the kitchen, cooking and sharing my experience with the students.”

Language Teaching
Te Reo Māori
These nine-hour short courses are professional development courses for prospective or current language teachers in New Zealand or overseas schools and tertiary institutions. The courses help you upgrade your knowledge base for teaching a language and are a great preparation for a training course in teaching English as an additional language (such as CELTA or the Certificate in Language Teaching). Admission to these courses is open, but classes are limited to 20 students. Participants with English as an additional language should have at least upper intermediate proficiency in English. For more information about the courses below and our other short courses visit www.languages.unitec.ac.nz or call us on 0800 10 95 10.
If you want to improve your understanding of Māori language and culture, Unitec offers free short courses in te reo Māori, which range from beginners to advanced levels. You study in an authentic tikanga Māori environment. On some courses you may even learn in Unitec’s very own marae, Te Noho Kotahitanga.
