I arrived in New Zealand on a stopover on my travels, and I instantly fell in love with this place and decided to live in this paradise. After I came to Auckland, I was working as a head chef in a catering company for several years but I dreamed of working as a chef tutor. Food is my greatest passion – I come from a country where family, food and celebration are one and the same. I really wanted to pass this love of food on to my students. The problem was that my English wasn’t really good enough for teaching. That’s why I decided to study the Certificate in English at Unitec. I just loved the multicultural student environment at Unitec, and the tutors were very supportive. Making a presentation in front of many people in a different language can be difficult, but the final class presentation about my work experience was fun and exciting at the same time. If English is an additional language for you, but you already speak it quite well, this is a good programme to choose. The Diploma in English (Advanced) helps you develop your English language skills to an advanced level. Courses will give you the linguistic, learning and cultural skills for employment, further study and/or to make the most of community life in New Zealand. In the third semester you can study courses that prepare you for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that require an IELTS score of 6.5. You’re assessed on your practical teaching skills, your responses to written assignments and your teaching portfolio. You must pass all assessment components. 100 percent attendance is required, unless there are exceptional circumstances. Once you’ve successfully completed this programme, you receive a certificate from Cambridge ESOL and a progress report. Career opportunities English language teacher in New Zealand or overseas

Do you want a career teaching English? The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is an internationally recognised and sought-after qualification. As a Cambridge qualification offered at Unitec, the programme is approved and supervised by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. CELTA is also available as part of the Certificate in Language Teaching. Highlights »» A practical introduction to English language teaching. »» Intensive four-week programme, from 19 November to 14 December 2012, Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 5pm. You also need to make time for class observations, lesson preparation and assignment work. »» Emphasis on teaching skills and a basic understanding of the processes and techniques used in English language teaching. »» Previous teaching experience is not required. »» Practical focus: you’ll practise teaching in a class of adults for a total of six hours and will observe experienced teachers teaching classes for a total of six hours. »» A Cambridge ESOL assessor moderates all assessment processes.

Do you want a career in language teaching? Learning to teach English could open up exciting career opportunities for you, in New Zealand or around the world. The Certificate in Language Teaching gives you the skills to become an effective language teacher. This programme is ideal for those who are new to teaching languages, as well as those who have some teaching experience. You’ll improve your understanding of language and how to teach a language, and learn more about various teaching contexts. Highlights »» Applicable to any language: while the focus of the programme is on teaching English, the skills you’ll learn can be transferred to the teaching of any language. »» Emphasis on teaching practice: take part in team teaching sessions with adult language students for a total of six hours, with feedback from lecturers. You’ll also need to make time for class observations, lesson preparation and assignment work. »» CELTA: you can complete the internationally recognised Cambridge Certiﬁcate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) as part of this programme. CELTA candidates will need to meet all CELTA entry and assessment criteria, and pay an additional administration fee. »» A chance to observe experienced language teachers “in action” in the classroom for a total of six hours.

Want a career as an interpreter? Are you fluent in two languages? Perhaps you’re already working or volunteering as an interpreter and want a formal qualification. The Certificate in Liaison Interpreting is a four-month intensive programme that provides you with professional skills in interpretation (the task of converting spoken statements from one language to another, and from one culture to another). With this certificate, community and government agencies can be sure you have the skills to work effectively and professionally as a liaison interpreter in a range of community settings. Highlights »» Emphasis on practical experience: practise what you’ve learnt in our well-equipped language labs and during group exercises with your fellow students. »» Access to the latest resources to support your learning. »» Friendly and helpful lecturers. »» Guest speakers who will inform you about the different situations where liaison interpreters are needed, such as in legal and medical contexts. »» Classes are held two evenings per week and on Saturday mornings. Short courses

English Plus These eight to 16-week short courses help you improve your English for a particular purpose or interest. The courses are 64 hours in total and can be studied in the evening, or intensively during holidays as part of the Summer School programme (Summer School courses are 60-64 hours). English Plus courses include Elementary, Intermediate, Workplace Communication and Pronunciation in the Workplace. IELTS Preparation* The IELTS Preparation course helps you prepare for the IELTS test. The course includes an overview of IELTS (the International English Language Testing System), test-taking strategies, types of test items, test practice, and a review of reading, writing, listening and interviewing skills. The course is 40 hours in total and is offered as a series of evening classes or as an intense two-week block course during semester breaks. We recommend that you also enrol in the IELTS Online Reading and Writing course. IELTS Online Reading and Writing* You study when you want to, where you want to, for up to 12 weeks – from your own home or office. The IELTS Online Reading and Writing course is a comprehensive introduction to the IELTS Academic Reading and Writing test questions. An experienced IELTS examiner will help you improve your academic writing and reading by giving you online feedback, even if you’re overseas. *Note: The Department of Language Studies operates an award-winning IELTS Test Centre where you can book your IELTS test at a time that suits you. Short courses

International languages short courses Our language short courses are a great way to gain confidence in a different language. We currently offer short courses in Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Samoan and Spanish at the Mt Albert campus. From the very first lesson you’ll interact with others in the target language. We constantly receive positive feedback about our supportive and well-trained lecturers who are usually native speakers of the language they’re teaching. They encourage you to continue language learning beyond the classroom, and give you insight into the culture(s) where the language is spoken. To support your learning, you also have access to excellent facilities such as the library and the Language Learning Centre. Courses start the week commencing 5 March and 30 July 2012. Beginners should enrol in Level 1A. Each subsequent semester you may then select the next level, i.e. 1B - 2A - 2B 3A - 3B - Conversation. International language electives We also offer intensive, part-time, credit-bearing courses in Chinese, Japanese and Spanish, designed to give you a high level of language fluency. Courses are run twice a week in the evenings, which makes them ideal for working professionals or students. Customised language training Do you (or your company) often deal with overseas clients and want to learn more about your business partners’ language and culture? Unitec offers customised language and culture training, tailored to your needs in terms of content, duration, time and place of delivery. Customised professional development for second language teachers is also available. We currently offer customised language training in Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Samoan and Spanish.

Language Teaching

Te Reo Māori

These nine-hour short courses are professional development courses for prospective or current language teachers in New Zealand or overseas schools and tertiary institutions. The courses help you upgrade your knowledge base for teaching a language and are a great preparation for a training course in teaching English as an additional language (such as CELTA or the Certificate in Language Teaching). Admission to these courses is open, but classes are limited to 20 students. Participants with English as an additional language should have at least upper intermediate proficiency in English. If you want to improve your understanding of Māori language and culture, Unitec offers free short courses in te reo Māori, which range from beginners to advanced levels. You study in an authentic tikanga Māori environment. On some courses you may even learn in Unitec’s very own marae, Te Noho Kotahitanga.

Short courses

Grammar Awareness for Language Teachers This course will sharpen your knowledge of basic grammar, and how to use grammar references in areas of difficulty. If you’re an in-service teacher, or planning to teach English, this is a great refresher course. You learn about parts of speech, verb phrase grammar, modal verbs, conditionals, prepositions of time and place, other grammar items, the basic vocabulary of grammar, and how to use grammar references. Grammar Awareness for Language Teachers (Advanced) This course builds on the topics covered in the basic Grammar Awareness course. If you’re an in-service teacher with some prior experience in teaching grammar, or want to further your knowledge of English grammar, this course is for you. It covers perfect and progressive aspects, stative versus dynamic verbs, conditionals (mixed), phrasal verbs, gerunds and infinitives, clause types and other grammatical items. Materials Writing for Language Teachers This course aims to provide English teachers with a range of techniques for teaching grammar, and providing oral and written practice. It’s suitable as a refresher for in-service teachers, and for those with little or no teaching experience. Phonology Awareness for Language Teachers This course focuses on the essential aspects of English pronunciation. If you’re a teacher who lacks confidence in this area, this is the ideal refresher course. You learn about sounds and syllables, stress (word and sentence), intonation, and how to identify aspects of pronunciation. You also explore practical ways to teach these aspects in the classroom. Teaching Basic Literacy This course for ESOL teachers focuses on the pre-literate learner. It equips you with the knowledge of how to meet the needs of these learners. For English language teachers in the secondary or tertiary sectors, and those who are training to become an English language teacher, this is excellent professional development.

Māori Language and Culture Tahi This course offers an introduction to basic language structures and vocabulary at a communicative level. It focuses on vowels, consonants, diphthongs, blends and the correct pronunciation of Māori words. Māori Language and Culture Rua This course follows on from Māori Language and Culture Tahi. It takes your understanding of Māori language and culture to the next level, making you feel more comfortable in a Māori environment. Māori Language and Culture Toru This course builds on the language skills and vocabulary you’ve gained in Māori Language and Culture Tahi and Rua, and helps you become confident and competent in te reo, both in formal and informal settings. Māori Language and Culture Wha This is the most advanced Māori language and culture course we offer, giving you the chance to learn in total immersion. You’ll participate in an informal conversation, contribute to classroom discussions, sing appropriate moteatea and recite karakia for different settings. Matauranga Māori electives Te ao Māori (the Māori world) is an exciting and enduring culture that has shaped Aotearoa society, and is an integral part of our contemporary lifestyle. Find out more about this culture and explore the many layers of Māori culture; te reo Māori (the Māori language), protocols of the marae, Māori philosophy and cosmology, and arts such as tā moko (tattooing) and raranga (weaving). Programme fees for 2012 have not yet been set and Unitec is currently reviewing them in the context of the Ministry of Education’s fees maxima policy. USU Students' Association fee In 2011, the USU Students’ Association at Unitec membership fee was $123.60 (including GST). The 2012 fee will be advised on the Unitec website, www.unitec.ac.nz, as soon as it has been approved. This fee is per full-time student, and part-time students pay proportionately less. If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can apply to the USU to be exempted from the USU membership fee, but you will still remain a member of the USU. If you don’t want to be a member of the USU, you can apply to be excluded on the grounds of conscientious objection, and your fee will be paid to a charity of USU’s choice. We will contact you to confirm that we received your completed Application/Enrolment Form for New Students. If you need to supply more details or attend an interview, we will let you know. If your application is successful you will receive an offer of place. Once you accept this offer you can be enrolled. If, for some reason, your application is not successful, we will try to suggest an alternative programme of study.

Once you are enrolled, fees will need to be paid. You will receive an invoice in the post. Fees need to be paid seven days prior to the start of your programme.
