CCEL provides more than just an English course. There are a lot of other services to help students enjoy studying in New Zealand:

All CCEL student accommodation is carefully selected and monitored by CCEL staff.

• Full-time homestay and student welfare staff • F irst-language support staff who can help students in their own language • An online visa application service • Help with opening a bank account • H elp with looking for employment in New Zealand for those students who are eligible for work • A cademic staff who can help students to achieve their study goals • An activity programme CCEL’s activity programme is the perfect way to have fun and make friends. There are usually 3 weekday activities every week - plus 1 or 2 activities every weekend. Activities are optional and varied to suit every budget and interest.

HOMESTAY Living with a New Zealand host family is the most popular choice for students. CCEL recommends staying in a homestay because students can experience Kiwi lifestyle, practise English and get extra support from their host family. • All host families are carefully selected by CCEL • Students have their own bedroom with a desk for studying • Students share the rest of the house with their host family • The host family provides breakfast and dinner everyday plus lunch at the weekends and on public holidays • Students can choose a homestay in the CCEL Walking Zone or Bus Zone

Sonoda Christchurch Campus is located on the University of Canterbury (UC) campus, only 3 minutes’ walk from CCEL. It has modern facilities and beautiful Japanese-inspired gardens. Sonoda is smaller than the other UC student residences, accommodating up to 110 students at a time, and is popular because of its friendly atmosphere.

Ilam Apartments is also located on the UC campus, approximately 10 minutes’ walk from CCEL. Ilam Apartments has an extensive activity programme and students have many opportunities to make friends with other CCEL students and domestic and international UC students.

FACILITIES Students in both residences have a single room with internet access, and share an apartment with up to 5 other people. Each apartment has a modern kitchen, lounge and bathroom, and most students cook their own meals. CCEL – A PATHWAY TO UNIVERSITY CCEL’s partnership with the University of Canterbury provides students with a pathway to university study. CCEL students can join the University of Canterbury Bridging and Foundation Programmes without taking the IELTS examination. The University of Canterbury was founded in 1873 and has an international reputation for academic excellence. There are currently almost 2,000 international students from up to 70 countries enrolled at the university. When students enrol at CCEL the University of Canterbury can issue a conditional offer to study at the university, provided the student meets the necessary academic requirements.

General English Courses

Cambridge Exam Preparation

These courses are for students who want an intensive programme to improve their all-round English skills.

Students can gain internationally recognised qualifications by taking Cambridge Examination courses at CCEL.

CCEL students can transfer from an English course to a Bridging Programmes course at the University of Canterbury without taking IELTS. The EAP entry test is offered at CCEL every 7 weeks. Students who pass the test can transfer directly to the EAP course. The Foundation Studies or Certificate in English for Tertiary Studies entry tests are offered on demand.

CCEL’s TESOL course is perfect for students who want to teach English or for English teachers who want to increase their confidence, improve their job prospects, and gain a teaching qualification from Cambridge ESOL.

CELTA is a very intensive course and the focus is on acquiring practical skills in a supportive environment.

Group Programmes

Useful Information

CCEL has a 20 year history of designing and delivering group programmes.

Programmes are tailor-made to meet the specific needs of each partner institution. • The three key components of group programmes are usually English language tuition, homestay and activities • There are no minimum or maximum time periods for group programmes to be provided

CCEL has a dedicated team who specialise in the area of group programmes. This includes the overall management of such programmes, teaching personnel that best fit the requirements of specific programmes, qualified homestay and student welfare staff, and activities co-ordination.

CCEL has the resources and experience to deliver group programmes both on-shore and off-shore.

• Students receive a certificate and course report at the completion of the programme
