Welcome to our school We hope you will find this information useful in helping you decide if Auckland Girls’ Grammar School is the school for you. We have answered many of the questions you and your parents may have about the school. If we have left out anything you want to know please do not hesitate to contact us.

Curriculum Choices
What will I study? You can choose your own programme, to some extent, once you have consulted with the teachers and your parents. Some courses are compulsory. At Auckland Girls we provide a broad, balanced curriculum, as set out in the NZ Curriculum.
Years 9 and 10 You will study courses selected from each of the 8 learning areas: • Arts • English • Health and Physical Education • Languages • Mathematics • Science • Social Sciences • Technology
Years 11, 12 and 13 You will be encouraged to maintain a broad, balanced programme but your choices will also depend on your career aspirations. As you progress through the year levels you will have more and more opportunities to choose courses that
appeal to you. When you make your choices, you should keep in mind what you hope to do after you leave school and select the appropriate courses. It is important that you do not limit your career options by choosing a range of courses that is too narrow.
At all levels You will also have the opportunity to develop the following key competencies: • Managing self • Relating to others • Participating and Contributing • Thinking • Using language, symbols and text. At Auckland Girls we place emphasis on developing strong skills in literacy, information literacy, thinking and ICT with our students.
Nga Tumanako o Kahurangi Kahurangi is a whanau unit which caters for approximately 100 girls from Year 9 to Year 13. Its main kaupapa is te reo and tikanga Maori. The programme aims to develop language skills and knowledge of tikanga while also making available the subject choices that Auckland Girls is able to offer.
Kahurangi offers girls who are committed to te reo and tikanga Maori and determined to achieve well in all areas of school life, an environment in which their tinana, wairua and hinengaro will be nurtured to equip them to be successful young women in te ao Maori and te ao Pakeha.
Kahurangi not only promotes and maintains te reo and tikanga Maori but aims for academic excellence and expects students to strive for their personal best in all their work.
Kahurangi welcomes fluent speakers of Maori as well as beginners. Nau mai, haere mai.

Curriculum Choices
Years 9 – 10 Year 9
Year 10
All Year 9 students study English, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Physical Education and Health, the Arts, Technology and a language other than English.
As a Year 10 student you will study English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, for the full year, and the equivalent of three other full year courses. Technology, Physical Education and Health and an Arts subject need to be included in your course. Some of these courses will be offered as semester (half year) programmes.
Option subjects you can choose from in Year 10 are:
Most Year 10 subjects offer an NCEA assessment with credits as an introduction to the senior school assessment system.
• Graphics
If you excel in a particular subject you may join a Year 11 class in that subject in Year 10 and gain credits towards National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 1.
• Media Studies
For your language you may study Maori, French, Latin, Samoan, or Japanese. English Enrichment is also offered for those students who require extra help with English. The teachers will advise you if you need this course. It is also possible to start a language, other than English in Year 10. English and Mathematics in the junior school will be taught in banded classes according to your ability.
Year 9 Support Our CHOICE Programme in Year 9 is about confidence, finding your way around the secondary environment, time management and other skills important for coping with the social and academic changes you will find at secondary school. You will also be helped in the first term by Year 13 students who will meet with you each week and help you settle in and deal with any concerns you may have. We call this the “Peer Support Programme”. It is our way of ensuring that you settle in quickly to life at Auckland Girls and become an effective and happy member of our school family.

Curriculum Choices
Years 11 – 13 In the senior school you have even more chances of studying at different levels. The programme you choose will depend on your success in the previous year and your career choices. You can see what is available below. Some courses are offered for the full year, others as semester (half year) courses.
In Years 11, 12 and 13 you will be preparing for national awards.
Year 11 Year 11 students will study English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Health. Students will choose a further two or three subjects from at least two of the following learning areas: Social Science; Technology; Arts or Languages. Year 11 students will have the opportunity to earn credits towards the NCEA. Students who achieve 80 credits across all their subjects will be awarded a Level one National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA). This must include 8 literacy and 8 numeracy credits.
Year 12 Most Year 12 students will be working towards NCEA Level 2. It will be possible for students to be working at both Level 1 and Level 2 and in exceptional cases Year 12 students may study one or more subjects at Level 3. Year 12 students will study a full year course in English or Communications and four or five other subjects, plus two semester courses. Students wishing to do NCEA Level 3 in Year 13 should do at least five full year Level 2 courses in Year 12. There will also be an opportunity to gain unit standard credits towards various National Certificates. Year 12 students take a career related course called Career Planning which includes some practical work experience.

Year 13 In Year 13 most students will be working towards NCEA Level 3. They will take one of the following: • a full NCEA Level 3 course of five subjects and three periods of study. • a combination of NCEA Level 1, 2 and or 3 subjects. • courses which lead to the National Certificates listed below: • National Certificate in Business Administration and Computing • National Certificate in Computing • National Certificate in Tourism. • National Certificate in Employment Skills • National Certificate in Catering and Hospitality • MIT Certificate in Sports Leadership In order to study a course at NCEA Level 3, there will be minimum requirements for most subjects. Any additions or alterations to the above list will be in the Senior School course booklet which will be available in the third term and has full details of all courses and prerequisites.

Uniform & Student Support
Do I have to wear a uniform? Year 9 - 12 students wear our uniform. Year 13 students wear mufti and are required to dress “appropriately”. Uniforms are available from the school shop which is situated on site, close to our main Administration Building in Room C28. The school shop will be open every school day from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Summer Regulation blue open necked shortsleeved shirt; regulation knee-length navy blue skirt (a long skirt is optional for Years 11 & 12), black low-heeled leather lace-up shoes worn with plain white ankle socks or black Roman sandals, school jersey.
Regulation blue long or short sleeved shirt, school vest and/or school jersey, black pantyhose or plain white ankle socks, black low-heeled leather lace-up shoes, school jacket.
You are not permitted to wear makeup, nail polish or jewellery, apart from a watch. If you have pierced ears one pair of small gold or silver studs may be worn. No nose, eyebrows or other facial studs are permitted. Long hair is to be tied back sensibly.
A blazer is available for Years 11 – 13 students. It may be worn in summer or winter.
We expect you to be in the appropriate uniform and to have all your clothes clearly labelled.
Physical Education
If you have particular cultural or religious customs that require a modification to our uniform, please discuss these with the Associate Principal.
Winter
T-shirt and shorts, sports shoes, or a school PE uniform can be purchased from the school shop. For swimming you may wear your own swimsuit or a school swimsuit available from the school shop.
Protective Clothing Protective clothing such as an old shirt or apron should be worn during Art and Workshop Technology classes.
Auckland Girls’ students wear their uniform with pride. We expect you to do the same and to be a great ambassador for our school.
Student support Student Services
The Learning Centre
A wide range of services are provided so that you can be supported in all aspects of your school life. The Counselling Area and Health Centre are both maintained by well qualified professionals and are the nucleus for many of the Health initiatives in the school.
The Learning Centre designs programmes to meet the needs of students who need extra assistance in all or some of their subjects. The Learning Centre also provides extension courses for students with special abilities.
Careers Guidance All year levels are involved in a career education programme directed at their level. You will visit the Careers Room as part of your introduction to the school.
The Reading Centre The Reading Centre provides a range of activities which focus on reading and provides extra help for students who find reading difficult.
Advanced Learners Students with high potential are challenged through an extension programme and a range of activities and initiatives in the core subject areas. They are identified, supported and mentored from Year 9 through to Year 13 by our Gifted & Talented Coordinator, senior AGGS students and tertiary students.

Activities
What else can I do besides study? While your studies will be your primary focus at Auckland Girls, you will have the chance to develop all your skills and talents. Every student is encouraged to join at least one of our wide range of activities every year. Parent help is always welcome in coaching, managing, transporting and supporting our groups.

If you would like to be involved in an activity that is not currently offered you should raise it with the School Council and we will do our best to respond. We are proud of the participation of our students in co-curricula activities but know that we need keen, determined, new talent to maintain our position as one of NZ’s top achieving schools. In recent years we have held the Auckland and NZ Secondary Schools Girls Senior Netball, Softball, Touch and Lacrosse titles; and the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Rugby and Curling titles. Our athletes also compete with success in the Secondary Schools Athletic Competition.

Scholarships
Are there any scholarships? We are fortunate to have a number of scholarships to help you while you are at Auckland Girls studies. There are also scholarships to assist you with your tertiary studies. Many of the scholarships are provided by former principals, old girls, staff and students. Details on when and how to apply for most of these scholarships are provided in the daily notices.
Annie Rose Allum Scholarship
John Williamson Scholarships
$500 for one year awarded to a worthy student to enable her to continue her studies at tertiary level.
$500 to students in Years 11 and 12 and $1000 to students in Year 13 who combine diligence with leadership and service to the school.
Rua I Gardner Scholarships $250 awarded to outstanding Year 9 and Year 10 students. The top Year 9 and Year 10 Rua Gardner scholars receive $350 and their names go on the Honours Board. Year 11 and 12 students may apply for a scholarship of $300 to help them continue with their studies at school. Year 13 students may apply for a scholarship of $500 to assist with their tertiary studies.
Louise Gardner Centennial Scholarship $4000 a year for three years to a student enrolled in a course of full-time study at a tertiary institution. Year 13 students and former pupils of Auckland Girls are eligible to apply. The Louise Gardner Trust also awards one off grants.
Jubilee Scholarship $350 provided by the Old Girls’ Association to an outstanding Year 11 student returning to Year 12 and $350 to an outstanding Year 12 student returning to Year 13.
E M Johnston Scholarship $1250, provided by the Old Girls Trust, to assist a Year 13 student with tertiary studies.
Centennial Awards $500 is awarded at Founding Day to a student from each senior year level. The student is chosen by her Dean based on her academic performance and her all round contribution to school life.
There are also bursaries and awards offered by other organisations such as the ASB Bank and businesses. Tertiary institutions such as the University of Auckland, AUT and UNITEC also provide a range of scholarships and awards to students who are leaving school.

Costs, Term Dates & Holidays
What does it cost to come to Auckland Girls? There are various costs depending on what courses and activities you do at school. We ask all parents to financially support their daughters and the school by:
• Paying the school donation of $220 per student and $160 extra for each additional family member. • Paying fees for the take-home content of activities such as Technology, Computing and Photography • Supporting field trips, outdoor education camps and cultural experiences, • Providing your stationery.
We rely on the school donation from our families to pay for the photocopying and computer printing freely available to students in their curriculum areas. The money is also used to buy extra books and magazines for the library, computer hardware and software, sports equipment, musical instruments, help pay affiliation fees and to provide the school magazine and the newsletter for parents.

Homework & Reports
Will I get homework? If you are going to make good progress at school, you need to spend some extra time each day going over your work, doing assignments, reading and making sure you understand what has been done in class. Most evenings you’ll have specific work set. At other times you should do some reading or revision.
As a general guide, Year 9 and 10 students should expect to do one hour’s extra work each school day and senior students at least two hours. If you do not do this each day, you will find that you need to spend much more time when you finally settle down to work.
Students who do the set work and manage their time appropriately generally do well at school. To help you with your studies textbooks are provided by the school. All students will be expected to purchase a homework diary.
How will I know how well I am doing at school? In all courses there are regular tests and assignments which the teachers mark and for most senior students there are ongoing assessments and examinations at least once a year. Year 9 and 10 students will have examinations at the end of the year. We report to your parents on your
progress three times a year. Parent teacher evenings are an opportunity for you and your parents to discuss with your teachers how you are doing and what you need to do to make even better progress. There will be other opportunities for you to see how well you are doing.
For example, there are Mathex and Science Fairs, you can enter the Australasian Maths, Science, Writing and English Competitions, Alliance Francaise, Manu Korero Speech and Classics Society competitions, Geography quiz, debating, sporting, drama and musical competitions.

Attendance You need to be at school every school day. It is your top priority. If you are ill please ask your parents to phone and let us know by 8.30 am. They can leave a message on the answer phone if the office is unattended. If we are not notified about your absence, your parents can expect to be phoned during the day to let them know you are not at school.

Enrolment
How do I enrol? In order to avoid overcrowding the school has in place an enrolment scheme and geographic zone, copies of which are included in this prospectus. Students who live within the geographic zone have priority right of entry. Enrolment for in-zone students is by post on the enrolment form in this prospectus. You can also download an enrolment form from our website www.aggs.school.nz
We will continue to welcome enrolments from students who live outside the geographic zone. Initial application will be by post. You will need to submit with your enrolment form a copy of your birth certificate, or passport if you were not born in New Zealand and a copy of your most recent school report. International Full Fee-Paying students are welcome to apply for enrolment Your accommodation will be arranged by one of our homestay organisations and supervised by the school’s Homestay Co-ordinator in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s Code of Practice. Government policy requires students who are not NZ born and do not have permanent residency to meet the full costs of their education in NZ. Our annual fee for full fee-paying students is $12,500 (this includes a $1000 administration fee) inclusive of GST. Our International Student Department is able to help with enrolment enquiries. Enrolment
Enrolment Scheme For the purpose of avoiding overcrowding at the school the Board of Trustees proposes pursuant to the Education Amendment Act 1989, to implement the following enrolment scheme with effect from 1 January 2001.
In developing this enrolment scheme the Board of Trustees has taken care to ensure that the scheme: a) Does not exclude more prospective students than is necessary to avoid the likelihood of overcrowding. b) Reflects the desirability of students being able to attend a reasonably convenient school. c) Enables the Secretary to make reasonable use of the existing network of schools. d) Takes into account its obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi. Auckland Girls’ Grammar School will accept applications for enrolment from girls who live in the greater Auckland area.
Enrolment will be determined according to the following: Students who live within the boundaries of the geographic zone will have automatic right of enrolment but must still complete an application form. In zone students are also required to provide evidence of residence e.g. power account, telephone account, tenancy agreement for rental properties or valuation notices for owner occupied properties.
Geographic Zone The boundaries of the geographic zone include: From Waitemata Harbour via the Strand, Stanley Street, Grafton Road, Park Road, Boston Road, Normanby Road to Mt Eden Road. The zone will run along Mt Eden Road to Landscape Road, along Landscape Road to Lambeth Road to Sandringham Road. Along Sandringham Road to St Lukes Road. Along St Lukes Road to Great North Road. Up China Man’s Hill to Surrey Crescent. Surrey Crescent to Richmond Road. Around Richmond Road to Ponsonby Road. Along Richmond Road to Coxs Creek (Bayfield Park Side) to Marine Parade, along Marine Parade to the Harbour. Both sides of all streets on the boundaries are included. Each year, applications for enrolment in the following year from in-zone students will be sought by a date which will be published in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. This will enable the board to assess the number of places which can be made available to students who live outside the home zone.

Enrolment
Special programmes Auckland Girls’ Grammar School operates the following Special Programmes. Students who live within the school’s home zone and meet criteria for enrolment in these programmes will be enrolled ahead of out-ofzone students. An interview will be necessary for all applicants applying for these programmes.
1. Nga Tumanako o Kahurangi (Kahurangi Bilingual Unit) This is a whanau unit which caters for approximately 70 students. Year 9 students are taught as a group for all their subject areas and are taught in Maori for approximately ten hours a week. Criteria for Enrolment 1. A desire to study in a whanau environment where there is no such unit available at a closer school. 2. A commitment to Te Reo Maori me ona Tikanga 3. A proven school attendance and behavioural record and a real desire to learn. 4. A commitment to being a member of one of the school’s Kapa Haka Ropu. 5. Evidence of strong whanau support for the student and the programme.
2. Special Needs Programme Auckland Girls has a Learning Centre which caters for the individual learning requirements of students with special needs and learning difficulties. Students are mainstreamed where possible. Those students who require a special programme are timetabled into the Learning Centre for up to 12 hours per week. Individual timetables which meet their specific needs make up the remainder of their programme and they are usually supported by a teacher-aide. Criteria for Enrolment Student requires individual attention because: 1. Her level of literacy and/or numeracy is considerably below that of her peers. 2. She has an intellectual, physical or sensory disability but is still able to benefit from some mainstream programmes. 3. She requires an adapted educational programme to best meet her needs.
• The security and safety of the students and staff will be taken into consideration when decisions about enrolments in our Special Needs programme are made. • Strong family support for the student and the programme is necessary.
3. Foundation Programme Auckland Girls’ Grammar School offers a Foundation Programme for students recently arrived from overseas who have very little English. A number of these students are Refugees and NESB students who are Permanent Residents. Students enter the Foundation class full time and are immersed in the English Language and take part in other activities which successfully integrate them into the New Zealand way of life. Criteria for Enrolment Minimal levels of literacy and numeracy for NESB students. 1. Little or no previous schooling 2. Phase one English learners.
4. Eden Campus Auckland Girls’ Grammar School operates a Teen Parent Unit (TPU). It is based off-site at 16 Nguaruhoe St, Mt Eden. The unit caters for the educational needs of teenage mothers or students who have become pregnant and are under the age of 19 years. An early Childhood Centre is provided on the site for the children of students at the unit. The unit caters for a maximum of 30 students. Criteria for Enrolment 1. Students will be resident on the Auckland Isthmus 2. Students will be under the age of 19 on enrolment and will either be pregnant or be a mother with prime responsibility for her child’s care.

Each year the Board of Trustees will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all out-of-zone applications must be received.
Applications for out-of-zone enrolments will be processed in the following order of priority: First Priority will be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in the following special programme(s): • Kahurangi bi-lingual Unit • Learning Centre for Special Needs students • Reception Centre • Teen Parent Unit
Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students. Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students Fourth priority will be given to applicants who are children of board employees. Fifth priority will be given to all other applicants. If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.
