A message from the Principal of Glenfield College Glenfield College is a well-established, co-educational secondary school, which has served its local community since 1969. The school has grown and changed over the years, and today reflects the diverse community it serves. As a medium-sized secondary school, Glenfield College is small enough for all students to be known and to receive an education tailored to meet their individual needs, while being big enough to offer a broad range of subject choice and future pathways. There is also a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer, which all students have access to. The school has a friendly and welcoming culture. Students are encouraged to respect others and value the diversity that characterises the school. The result is well-balanced young people, who go on to succeed in their tertiary studies or in the workforce. Glenfield College has outstanding executive leadership with very experienced senior staff, some of whom have served Glenfield College for over twenty years.

Excellence in performing arts has long been a feature of the school. To support them, an outstanding facility, the Kaipatiki Theatre, was opened in 2005.

Glenfield College recognises the value of vocational education. It has an Automotive Workshop where students can undertake studies towards a mechanical engineering career. It also has a Services Academy, where students prepare for a career in the New Zealand Armed Services.

Courses of Study All year 9 students are assessed prior to arrival in our school using national testing tools, school reports and teacher comments to ensure appropriate classroom placement. Glenfield College offers streamed top classes at years 9 and 10 levels for its more able students. The New Zealand curriculum is tightly prescribed, and Glenfield College has been assessed by the Education Review Office as delivering this curriculum fully and effectively. At years 9 and 10, subjects come from the core national curriculum requirements of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health, Languages, Technology and the Arts [Music, Dance and Drama].
Subject choice widens as students progress through the year levels. All students receive an annual Course Directory which outlines study pathways to lead them through school and beyond, to tertiary study or the workforce. The NCEA [National Certificate of Educational Achievement] is our qualification of choice for our senior students. It is well-established in the school and provides a variety of pathways in which all students can maximise their potential. Throughout their time at the school, each student has contact with Careers staff, Tutors and Deans to assist them with academic course selection. Every effort is made to ensure students do not limit their options, and ultimately fulfil their potential and meet their individual goals.
The NCEA is our qualification of choice for our senior students.
Gifted and Talented Programmmes Students are identified for Gifted and Talented Programmes from entry testing, recommendations from contributing schools, and family and teacher referrals. Students gifted academically, in sports, and the performing arts and culture, can take part in these programmes. Key staff act as mentors for students in the programmes by setting annual goals with students, meeting regularly with them to check on progress and liaising with Deans, teachers, coaches and trainers, to ensure the students are appropriately challenged. Speakers and role models are also brought in to inspire and motivate students.
Learner Support Student entry data and testing enable staff to identify students who have gaps in their learning or specific learning needs. Experienced staff provide suitable support and strategies to enable students to work towards reaching their potential as well as they possibly can. All teachers willingly provide extra help for students at all levels to reach their goals and enjoy success.
Homework
Uniform
Homework is an integral part of the learning process. For students in years 9 to 12, homework is set, marked and followed up by teaching sta. This helps to foster organisational skills, as well as the habits of self-discipline and independent work. Students not meeting homework expectations will be monitored and may enter into a disciplinary process.
GlenďŹ eld College has a smart and easy to wear uniform. Uniform is an economical option for parents and for the students; it helps build a sense of identity and pride in the school. The uniform is designed around the school colours: black, white and maroon and is compulsory for years 9 to 12.
In year 13, plenty of assignment work is set and thoroughly marked, but the onus is on students to complete work to a high standard. In this way we assist our students to become independent learners, so necessary for success in their tertiary studies.
Extra-Curricular Opportunities Secondary school is a wonderful time to try out a range of extra-curricular activities. Sport, music, theatre, dance, debating, and so on, give students opportunities to develop talents, leadership skills and team dynamics.
Performing Arts The Kaipataki Theatre is the home of performing arts at GlenďŹ eld College. Students use this fullyequipped space for drama, dance, musical and social events. There is an active Dance/Drama Department which drives extra-curricular activities in the performing arts. Many students who participate in the performing arts develop additional self-conďŹ dence. It also provides students with opportunities to star behind the scenes, in directing, in technical management, and in design.
Cultural Groups Glenfield College, like most Auckland secondary schools, is culturally diverse. The school has active kapahaka and Pasifika groups, and encourages other cultural groups to form. Each year, the whole school celebrates International Week, which includes group performances, food stalls and displays.
Music Music thrives at Glenfield College. There are many opportunities to join groups: choirs, classical groups, jazz and rock bands. Throughout the year, the school has productions and events which provide performance opportunities. There is a strong itinerant music teacher programme within which students can undertake individual tuition in an instrument or voice. There are excellent facilities for practice and participation and we encourage students to try their hand at a musical instrument at some stage during their secondary education.
Sport Sport is very actively promoted at GlenďŹ eld College and we ask parents to support their children into sport throughout their time at the school. There are many sports teams to choose from, and participation leads to a healthier lifestyle and positive beneďŹ ts in the classroom. Playing in a team provides opportunities for individuals to develop leadership, organisational, cooperative and commitment qualities. Teenagers need healthy activities in their spare time and sport is a perfect alternative to many other distractions of much less value. GlenďŹ eld College has a record of success in competitive sport and each year has a good number of North Harbour representatives.
Facilities
Computer Access
Glenfield College is a well-resourced secondary school. Each year, resourcing needs are assessed and programmed as part of an ongoing budgeting process. The school recognises the need to continuously upgrade facilities to meet the changing needs of the curriculum and the demands of technological advances.
The school has over 300 computers for student use and all staff have personal laptops. This technology is very much part of teaching and learning at the school.
Kaipatiki Theatre The school opened its superb Kaipatiki Theatre in 2005 and it is the home of performing arts in the school. It is a fully-equipped performance space with excellent sound and lighting, a control room, and a moveable stage and audience seating.
Library Glenfield College has a welcoming library with all the written and electronic resources to meet the needs of its students. It has good Internet access and specialist staff to give individual assistance to students.
Cafeteria There is a large cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating space. There is a good variety of food available with an emphasis upon healthy eating choices. All food purchases come with a free piece of fruit.
Recreational Spaces GlenďŹ eld College has a large gymnasium, a weights room and a dance room. Its outdoor facilities include expansive playing ďŹ elds, tennis and netball courts which are all well-used.
