Welcome to New Zealand
Welcome to Auckland
New Zealand is the third best country to live in the world, climbing 17 places in the latest United Nations’ index aimed at measuring development.
Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. The city is known as the ‘City of Sails’. This is because of a great number of yachts that sail in the harbours and the adjoining Hauraki Gulf.
Top 15 countries:
Approximately 401,500 people live within the city boundary and 1.25 million in the greater Auckland area. This represents about one third of the population of the whole country.
1. Norway 2. Australia 3. New Zealand 4. United States With just over 4 million people living in New Zealand, it’s easy to find - or get away from - the crowd. So if your preference is access to big-city shopping, check out Auckland (the largest city with over 1.5 million residents), Christchurch, Wellington (the capital) or Dunedin. But one of the joys of New Zealand is that you can also choose to live a more rural lifestyle, and still live within an hour’s drive of the centre of any of these cities Get outside to enjoy There’s always some adventure to be had in New Zealand. It really is a natural playground, one that New Zealanders treasure and enjoy daily. New Zealand has great surf beaches around the country, and in winter the lower South Island provides amazing snow mountains for winter sports. Everywhere you go there’s something new to do, even if it’s a relaxing picnic in one of our natural reserves. Over 1/3 of New Zealand is made up of protected parkland and marine reserves. They encompass a wide variety of scenery, vegetation and geography, and offer numerous opportunities to camp, mountain bike, fish, hike and much more. You’ll find plenty of solo and team sports here. Some of our favourites include rugby, cricket, netball and swimming, but you’ll also find everything from white-water rafting to hiking, football to basketball, fishing to skiing… and the list goes on! A multicultural mix Every person you’ll meet in New Zealand is either an immigrant or a descendant of one, which gives New Zealand a true multicultural feel. The first settlers were the Maori who arrived over 700 years ago, followed in the nineteenth century by large numbers of immigrants from the United Kingdom. The end of World War II saw a dramatic increase in European migrants as citizens fled war-weary countries for a new start. From the 1960s, people from neighbouring Pacific Islands including Samoa and Tonga began settling here, primarily in Auckland. Chinese and Korean migrants followed in the 1980s, many also making Auckland their new home. These migrants have given the city a very strong Pacific and Asian feel. More recently, New Zealand has welcomed new residents from a wide range of countries such as the US, South Africa, Zimbabwe and India.
Every year around 50,000 international students take advantage of Auckland’s world-class institutions and enjoy our energising way of life. Auckland is multicultural - Auckland is multicultural and home to many nationalities. People from all over the world choose to live in Auckland making it a diverse and exciting place to be. Whether you want a sense of home or to discover new cultures, Auckland delivers. Auckland is welcome and safe - All the advantages of a big city without the crime and pollution you’d otherwise expect. Instead, Auckland offers clean air, golden beaches, easy travel and friendly people. Auckland is full of opportunities - Auckland is one of the fastest growing cities in New Zealand, with skilled people in demand. Who knows what amazing job you might land with the right qualifications? Auckland is a student - Each year 58% of all New Zealand’s international students choose Auckland. There’s a real buzz to student life in Auckland. Auckland is a hip, thriving young city and region with growing international stature and its own laid back approach to life.

Twenty six year old Adrian first moved to New Zealand from Fiji in 2008 in a quest to find work, after no luck he returned home. He then tried again, coming back to New Zealand in 2010 to study for a NZIM Diploma in Management (level 5).
Twenty eight year old Gaurav came to New Zealand from India three years ago to study for a Diploma in Business (Level 5).
He came to ICA on the word of a good friend who had described ICA in great ways. “My friend told me about the management and support teams and how good they were, aswell as the fee structures. Everything fell into place as ICA offered me the chance to study what I really wanted to do.”

Adrian then landed his first job with a security company and found himself going places. He then moved to the Auckland District Health Board part time and after 6 short months of hard work he was promoted to full time. “I found ICA interesting, the staff, students and the way of teaching made each day fun and exciting. I got to know everyone, including the staff on a personal level. My tutor even helped me to get my current job! All of the services were so good. “ Adrian plans to move into administration with his dream job moving into management some day.
“My first three months in New Zealand were a real struggle, I came with only $70 in my pocket. I lived in Mt Eden and had no bus fare so I would walk to college every day.” After his struggle, Gaurav finally got a job and things have never looked better. The management skills that ICA provided, he claims, have helped him to progress both personally and professionally. According to Gaurav, the new students “First year have to manage themselves to be able to successfully manage a team.” “ICA business faculty gave me the skills which helped me to improve my confidence level. ICA faculty and the staff are very helpful and friendly. They go out of their way to help you, especially the new international students to get settled in, in this beautiful country. “ With his high confidence level, he is able to confidently manage a team at Nandos, based in New Lynn. When asked what he does in his spare time, he replied with “I don’t have any spare time, I am always working towards my dream of becoming an ‘independent business owner’”
Rui Fan English Language Student I am from China, when I first came to ICA, I was having a bit difficult time of my study, because of my English ability. However, not only the teacher here, but also my classmates helped me a lot. I made a lot of friends from different country, and I think my study experience in ICA would definitely be helpful for my life in NZ later on..

Kitty Wu
Jatinder Singh
Diploma in Computer Systems (adv) Level 7
NZIM Diploma in Management (level 5)
Twenty five year old Jatinder came to New Zealand from a small village in India 8 months ago to study for a Diploma in Computer Systems (adv) Level 7.
Kitty is a young and vibrant Chinese national who original came to New Zealand for a holiday. She ended up staying and began her study in October of 2009. Kitty said that she has always wanted to study business in a Western country which is what drove her decision to stay.
Jatinder previously studied a Diploma in IT back in India and when given the opportunity to come to New Zealand and further his study, he grabbed it with both hands and was “thrown in the deep end”. “When I first arrived in New Zealand I was over whelmed, coming from a small village it was a big change. Everyone was so friendly and my landlord helped me to settle in and find my place.” He found the college to be a happy and inviting place, “I like the environment and the people, the college staff are so supportive!” Jatinder said his greatest challenge was finding a job, but soon enough, he was working part time in a restaurant until he finishes his study and moves onto his dream job in the IT industry. He enjoys playing cricket with his fellow students and surfing the internet in ICA’s computer lab. “I have learnt more than just IT, I have learnt a lot about how to survive on my own. ICA provided me with practical life education.”
Kitty initially struggled through her first few months but after finding work in restaurants and cafes, life got easier. “Even though jobs were scarce, my tutor continued to help me with my job search, he was so helpful!” Kitty is now working her dream job in a tertiary school providing marketing and student services. She says one day she will move into public relations but she is really happy where she is at the current time. “My tutor helped me get my current job, he gave me a brilliant reference, without him, I wouldn’t have my job!” “I really enjoyed my time at ICA, all the tutors and management were really friendly and encouraging. From the bottom of my heart, ICA helped me to make really good lifelong friends – friends who have helped me to get to where I am today.”

NZIM Diploma in Management (level 5) Sukhjinder came to New Zealand from a small town in India last year. At the age of 22, she studied a National Diploma in Computing (level 5). After completing her Diploma, she decided to study another NZIM Diploma in Management (level 5). On her first day in NZ, she struggled with living in a different environment. However after her first day at ICA, she found herself completely at home and settled in, everyone made her feel welcome. “In ICA, I have made so many friends, through both IT and business. I found IT to be such a great practical experience. At first when I decided to study business, I thought it was going to be boring, but after the first day, I found it to be a very friendly environment which gave me real life examples of business situations. ICA provided great facilities for the students, excellent teaching environments and amazing content for the courses. I was truly blown away by the real life case studies displayed in the business papers.”

If you require Airport Pick-up and/or accommodation you must inform International College of Auckland two weeks in advance of your arrival in New Zealand of your request/s. Students who are not up to date with payments of fees will not be entitled to continue the qualification or to graduate from it. International College of Auckland includes an International Administration Fee in the fees for international students for the first enrolment period. • Domestic Students Only. Forward payment of tuition fees, resource fees, and accommodation fee as required to the Academic Registrar, International College of Auckland, prior to the commencement of your programme. Successful applicants will be sent an Invoice and a Receipt will be issued when payment is made. (b) Fees Protection ICA ensures that all fees from students are protected by a trust account set up with the Public Trust. This mans that student fees are protected if the student withdraws from the course within the first eight days or if unexpectedly a course is closed early. Whether or not students are entitled to a refund of fees depends on the proportion of the course that has not been provided. In that situation the College will assist the student to make study arrangements with another provider and study credits will be transferred to the new provider. The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has accepted this arrangement as meeting requirements of its student indemnification policy. (c) Arrival at International College of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand On arrival at International College of Auckland, bring evidence of identity, citizenship or immigration status (student permit/visa or permanent residence). For international students a copy of your Visa and Permit must be supplied to International College of Auckland upon arrival in Auckland. (d) Payment The student will upon demand pay all International College of Auckland expenses and legal costs (on a solicitor/agent/representative/client basis) in the collection of all overdue fees. If payment is overdue International College of Auckland may charge interest on any overdue amount at the rate of 2.5% per month from the overdue date until payment in full is received by International College of Auckland. (e) Withdrawal and Refund Procedures: i. If a student withdraws before the commencement of the course, or withdraws because of the decline of his/her visa application, all tuition fees less 10% or $500, whichever is lesser, will be refunded. ii. If a student withdraws within the first 10 working days after and including the scheduled commencement date of the course, s/he will be refunded in full less a deduction for costs incurred by International College of Auckland, up to a maximum of 25% of the fee total paid. ICA will provide the student with details of the cost components for the purpose of working out the maximum deductible percentage. iii. If a student withdraws on day eleven or later of the course, s/he would only be eligible for a refund of tuition fees in exceptional circumstances. This will be at the discretion of the Board of Directors and will be considered on a case by case basis. The student should provide documentation to support any such application which must be made within one month of the last day of attendance. The board will make no refund where a student has been expelled, or where a student wishes to transfer to another school, or where a student’s enrolment application is found to be inaccurate in anyway and the contract is terminated. iv. Before processing a refund fees, ICA may require a student to provide written confirmation of the withdrawal from the student’s parents, guardian(if under 16 years old), or agent and, where a student has obtained a bank loan for the purpose of studying at ICA, may require confirmation that the lender consents to the withdraw. v. Where ICA is aware that a student has obtained a bank loan for the purpose of attending ICA, ICA will endeavor to refund fees, in accordance with the Refund Policy, to the relevant lending bank unless otherwise instructed by that bank. vi. For a refund of his/her Homestay fees, a student is entitled to either give two weeks notice or forfeit two weeks of Homestay fees. The remainder of the fees will then be refunded to the student. vii. A student may be allowed to join a course as a late arrival after the scheduled commencement date. The provisions of ICA’s Refund Policy apply from the scheduled commencement date and not the date on which a late student arrives. I am coming from Taiwan, in my class, students from all over the world. We became friends even though we come from totally different culture background and speak different languages. We care each other, and help each other, and we are just one big family in ICA.
I am from South Korea. ICA was a good choice for me because when I came here. I could not speak English very well. My English has improved and I can now converse and hold a conversation in English. My English class is fun and has developed my English skill rapidly. I have enjoyed the experience this is all due to my wonderful English teacher.
