The city campus has a student radio station, an art gallery, a practicing nursing ward, Urban Hair, Urban Spa and science teaching laboratories. The Rotokauri campus, 15 minutes north of the city has sport science laboratories, specialist kitchens and a training restaurant, a veterinary surgery, an animal house and fully equipped trades workshops. COMMUNICATION Your communication endorsement on this programme allows you to specialise in journalism, moving image or public relations. In your first year you will develop writing, media and interpersonal skills common to moving image, public relations and journalism practices. Writing is the major component of this endorsement. You’ll learn to write effective news stories, media releases and project briefs. BIOTECHNOLOGY Biotechnology is technology based around biology, especially as it relates to animals, plants, food science and medicine. A PRACTICAL APPROACH At Wintec we take a hands-on approach to learning. LEARNING ON THE JOB On this programme you have the opportunity to follow women through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care. In your first year you spend 16 weeks in clinical placements at birth centres, hospitals and various community agencies working under the supervision of a registered midwife. In your second year, your time in clinical placements is 30 weeks. In your third year you will spend just four weeks in class and the rest of the year on the job training working alongside registered midwives. You will learn to analyse discrimination and implement both individual and community-based advocacy strategies in response to discrimination against consumers/tangata whai ora. YOUR FUTURE IN PROFESSIONAL COOKERY, HOSPITALITY, BEAUTY, TOURISM AND EVENTS CERTIFICATE IN COOKERY (LEVEL 3)* DURATION: Starts February for one year IELTS: 5.5 with 5.0 written OVERVIEW Get your career in food preparation or food service off to a flying start. This programme incorporates the units required for the National Certificate in Hospitality (Basic Cookery) (level 3) and at the end of it, you’ll be eligible to sit the City & Guilds of London 7065 Certificate in Food Preparation and Culinary Arts examination. LEARN BY DOING The programme consists of a combination of four hour kitchen workshop classes as well as theory studies. Within the year there is an eight week service module where you’ll gain valuable on-job training, cooking and serving lunches and dinners to real customers in our fully licensed training restaurant. Work experience opportunities at events are available for students. You’ll also have the opportunity to compete in the annual Waikato and National Culinary Fare. STATE-OF-THE-ART LEARNING CENTRE Wintec’s Centre of Hospitality includes two large commercial kitchens, a production kitchen, and a restaurant featuring indoor and outdoor dining, licensed bar and seating for 80. You’ll learn in small class sizes with tutors who are recognised specialists in the hospitality industry with first-hand experience in restaurant management. Some of the course content is delivered online with Moodle with access anywhere there’s a computer connection. INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS Our close relationship with the Hospitality Industry both nationally and internationally means we are often in a position to find placements for successful students at the end of a course.
CERTIFICATE IN COOKERY (LEVEL 4)* DURATION: Starts February or July for one year IELTS: 5.5 with 5.0 written OVERVIEW This is a second year programme that is designed to provide you with more advanced skills and knowledge in professional cookery. You’ll be introduced to new techniques for preparing complex sauces, soups, desserts, pastry, breads and terrines as well as learning how to cook a range of traditional and contemporary menu items. Emphasis is placed on creating dishes that can be presented and served in modern hospitality establishments. WHERE YOU LEARN Wintec’s superb Centre of Hospitality provides the best possible start to your career. It includes two large commercial kitchens, a production kitchen, and a fully operational training restaurant featuring indoor and outdoor dining, a licensed bar and seating capacity for 80. IT’S VERY HANDS ON Your tutors are experienced teachers from an industry background, many with first-hand knowledge of managing their own restaurants. They will be delivering both the practical and theory aspects of the programme. You will gain advanced cookery skills attending four hour kitchen workshops and learning the relevant associated theory. One day a week, you will actually run the kitchen of our training restaurant, Windows on Avalon. Work experience opportunities at events are available for students. You’ll also have the opportunity to compete in the annual Waikato and National Culinary Fare. wintec centre for languages ACCIDENT INSURANCE The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE International students (including group students) must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand. CODE The Waikato Institute of Technology has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Copies of the Code are available from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz/international IMMIGRATION Full details of immigration requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available from Immigration New Zealand, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz.
IELTS All referrals to IELTS refer to the Academic Requirements only. In all cases, IELTS assessments must be no less than 2 years old at the time of application. ADDITIONAL COSTS It is important that you pay for the full costs of all services requested along with your tuition fees payment. A receipt will only be issued once full payment has been received by Wintec. At the time of printing your total living expenses required per year for Visa purposes is $15,000 NZD from April 2012. Some programmes have additional expenses such as books, stationary, uniforms, catering equipment and assignment materials. Prices vary so please enquire on application to a programme. Text books are usually between $75 - $110 each. REFUND POLICY By accepting a place in a programme or paying fees at Wintec, a student enters a contract with Wintec for the period of the programme. This means there is an obligation to pay the fee for one year or the length of the programme if less than one year. The refund policy is available on the website: www.wintec.ac.nz/international under ‘general information’. In the event of insufficient numbers of enrolments the programme may be cancelled and a refund will be given.
