LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND
Living in New Zealand Geography – New Zealand is a group of islands in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean. Australia is the nearest neighbour, almost 2,000 kilometres to the west. New Zealand (275,000 square kilometres) is similar in size to Japan, Vietnam, or Great Britain. Cook Strait separates the two main islands of New Zealand, the North Island and the South Island. Both islands have large, fertile coastal plains divided by hills and mountain ranges. The Southern Alps run the length of the South Island giving shelter to the fertile east coast. Lakes and bush dominate scenery throughout. The South Island has fiords and glaciers while the North Island is home to several volcanoes. The spectacular geography and temperate climate combine to allow an extensive array of recreational options – world class ski fields; kilometres of coastline for surfing, swimming, boating, fishing and diving; an extensive network of walks and tracks for tramping; wild bush for hunting; safe skies for flying; mountains for climbing. Climate – New Zealand enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The north of the North Island is subtropical and mild most of the year; the South Island is cold in winter (June – September) but mild in summer (December – March). The average temperature ranges from 9-25 Celsius with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine in a year. Rainfall can occur any time of the year but tends to be higher in winter. Snow regularly falls in the mountains but seldom in the populated areas around the coast. The New Zealand climate is variable all year being neither very cold nor very hot. Houses do not have central heating and indoor temperatures can be cool. Jackets, coats and layered clothing are common. Even indoors a warm jersey may be needed.
Life style – Life in New Zealand is casual and relaxed. In the main centres it is cosmopolitan with an emphasis on sport and the arts. Restaurants and cafés feature national and international cuisine accompanied by excellent New Zealand wines. New Zealanders are friendly people, keen to explore the world and welcome visitors to experience their country. Tourism and hospitality are growing industries. While high-rise apartment living is increasing in the main cities, single houses on separate plots of land are more common. New Zealand is a parliamentary democracy with government elections every three years, the most recent in 2008. A proportional system of representation is used. The dollar is the currency in New Zealand. The rate of exchange with other currencies is variable. The metric system is used for weights and measures. Shopping hours are 9am-5pm Monday to Wednesdays with late night shopping till 9pm in most areas on Thursdays and Fridays. In the weekend, shopping hours are 10am-5pm. Banks are open 9am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. Christianity is the main religion but migrants have brought their own faiths and practicing groups can be found throughout the country. More information The following internet sites can help with more information about living in New Zealand: www.newzealand.com www.aucklandnz.com www.wellingtonnz.com www.educationnz.org.nz www.immigration.govt.nz
Population – New Zealand is lightly populated with approximately 4.25 million people. Most live in the North Island. Auckland is the largest city with over 1 million people. Wellington is the capital city and the next largest centre of population. In the South Island, Christchurch and Dunedin are the main cities. The official languages are English and Ma-ori. English is the dominant language but Ma-ori is increasing and regularly used for place names. Ma-ori were the first settlers of New Zealand with European settlers arriving in the 1800s. Today, there is a growing multicultural population with migrants from all over Europe, Asia, the Pacific and more recently, Africa.

LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND
Whitireia Community Polytechnic Whitireia (pronounced fee tee ray ar) is the name given by the local Ma-ori people. It is taken from the name of a local Wellington mountain and means “first light of the sun.” Governance – Whitireia is owned by the New Zealand government. This ensures the education programmes offered meet the quality standards of internationally recognised qualifications. Government ownership offers security and a focus on student support. Whitireia was established in 1986 and currently has over 130 programmes of study available. Whitireia has established a reputation for producing a wide range of work-ready graduates who have gone on to secure employment both in New Zealand and overseas. Programmes of study can lead to a range of qualifications from certificate level to diploma, advanced diploma, undergraduate degree, and postgraduate degree. Full-time or part-time study is available. Short courses of community interest are also offered. Location – Whitireia is located over four campuses: • The main Wellington campus is situated in Porirua 20 minutes north from the city centre beside the harbour and is very close to the train station, shopping malls, recreation facilities and offers free parking for students. • Kapiti is 40 kilometres north of Wellington City – this campus offers business, beauty, hairdressing, catering and a range of arts programmes including photography. This smaller campus is set in a rural area close to the famous Lindale Farm complex yet only 10 minutes from the beach, mountains and native bush reserves. • Wellington City campus is located in the central business district. It specialises in English language study and courses for professionals studying for career advancement. • Auckland is in the heart of Auckland City central business district. It specialises in English, Business, Hospitality, Information Technology and Early Childhood Education courses for international students.
Panhapheary Leaph Born: Cambodia Hi everybody, my name is Pheary and I am from Cambodia. I have been at Whitireia for 1 year and have studied Intensive English and completed a Certificate in Tourism. I enjoy studying at Whitireia and I have two brothers who are also studying at the same campus.
WHITIREIA AUCKLAND CAMPUS
The thing I like the most about the Porirua campus is the huge library. It has heaps of reference books and students can use computers in the library for researching or doing assignments. All my tutors are very helpful and friendly and have ways of teaching that make it easy to understand. I am currently studying the NZIM Certificate in Management and when I finish it I will continue onto the New Zealand Diploma in Business which my parents encourage me to complete.

Kazumi Smith Born: Japan I came to New Zealand from Japan to study Travel and Tourism in 2006. My experience at Whitireia was very practical and it was wonderful. I was able to learn not only basic skills such as geography and destinations, but also computer reservation system and sales skills. Whitireia also offered an educational trip to South Island, which was a great opportunity to actually ‘know’ about what we studied. Although passing assessments was not easy, tutors and classmates were really supportive. I felt that Whitireia had everything that I needed to succeed as a student.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Surinder Kambo and Gurparshad Puri Born: India We have recently finished our Diploma in Hospitality Management at Whitireia Community Polytechnic at Porirua campus. We chose this course because we wanted to work in the hotel industry and it offered us lots of practical experience. It is a qualification that has taught us how to run an organisation and successful operation in the hotel industry. We found the tutors to be professional and experienced in teaching Hospitality related topics and practical too. We have been very satisfied with the International Student Centre because we got help and advice in regard to any problems during our stay in New Zealand. We are pleased that we came to Whitireia for study. Wellington is a really beautiful city to live and peaceful to study in. Weather is also nice and unpolluted. We have met many people from many countries which has helped us learn different cultures and their beliefs. We are currently applying for NZ Residency and hope to live a happy life here in New Zealand.
Guanbin Zhou Born: China My name is Guanbin Zhou but I am known as Ken in New Zealand where I have been studying for the past two years. Prior to moving to New Zealand I was studying at Huaihai Institute of Technology in a Bachelor of Computer Science. I was offered a scholarship from the NZIUS that brought me here to study at Whitireia Polytechnic in Auckland. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Information Technology where I am carrying out my industry project. The industry project allows me to work with a local business to further develop my skills and experience. Whitireia Polytechnic offers good student services and resources to help with my study. When I am not studying I like to travel around New Zealand. Once I have completed my degree I plan to stay and work in New Zealand as a programmer or web developer.

Here is an example of a students writing after completion of the English Course The year has almost come to an end. This is my last week on the English course at Whitireia Polytechnic. I have learnt a lot, especially, the formality of essay and report writings. However, as for my English grammar, I still managed to jumble up all the tense and sentences structures. It’s looks like a cooking pot with all the mixtures; vegetables coloured in green, yellow, brown, white and black. But together with all these mixes, I have also met lots of people from different ethnicities and background: a variety of rainbow colours and personalities. I really enjoyed studying English here. I got to study with all the different age groups of people. I’m not only learning English but also I’ve got to know and learn the different cultures and traditions from my classmates. The other great stuff is that I got to meet with all the cool tutors. Sometimes, studying English can be frustrating (for me, especially the grammar classes and word stress) and boring but with our teachers’ expert help and great personalities, it can be fun and interesting. As I have mentioned, my term has come to a close. I feel like I have been left stranded alone on an island. I’ve got used to the daily routine of coming to school. But, as I pondered and reflected, this is not an end, it is a New Beginning for me. I have got next year to look forward to… because we are expecting a baby this coming Christmas. Bye, bye, for, now. . .
