ERO Review 2009

Our plans for the next two years are to expand further into digital learning in order to better prepare students for the workplace of tomorrow and to improve our performing arts facilities. These need to match the outstanding achievements of our students in the arts. Kapiti College is a school which goes from strength to strength. The vision, drive and determination of our staff and students are infectious. I hope that you will join us. I am pleased to have this opportunity to invite you to visit us to find out more and to see for yourself how we can help your child fully unlock their potential.

About Kapiti College

College &

We are a co-educational secondary school with a roll of over 1000 students. We welcome students from any location as we are an unzoned school and currently pupils come to us from as far south as Porirua and as far north as Otaki. We also proudly promote our school to the world as a safe and opportunity-rich place for international students. In 2012 we have students coming to us from 11 countries across Asia, Europe and South America. This diversity benefits the school hugely and prepares our local students for their place in an increasingly international world.

Our Campus

Student Leadership

Around a third of our students travel by public transport. Students who live in Raumati or Paraparaumu catch the regular Mana Coach Service buses from a stop close by. A Mana Coach Services bus collects students throughout Waikanae, stops at Waikanae Station then comes direct to our gate. Otaki students can bus to Waikanae. Southern students are collected by our bus from Paremata, Plimmerton, Pukerua Bay and Paekakariki or they can catch the train to Paraparaumu Station and bus from there. With so many doing after school activities it is great that buses run from right outside the school.

Kapiti College was built in 1954 and has been undergoing a full modernisation programme to serve the diverse needs of our students. Many of our learning spaces are purpose built: there is a dance studio, film editing suites and a recording studio. We have our own marae on site with wharekai and fully serviced wharenui. Our state of the art gymnasium was completed in 2010. Our newest addition is the $1.2 million technology block with its large commercial kitchen and dedicated computer hub. We have computers for student use in and out of class time and wireless internet throughout the school.

Kapiti College is well known for the leadership opportunities we offer students. From Year 9, there is encouragement to join representative councils at each year level through to the Student Executive. The Head Student Team take many leadership roles, running assemblies and Year Level Councils, representing the school at public events and making decisions on spending priorities. We train students for future leadership and students run their own training such as the Global Leadership Convention.

Over my time at Kapiti College, I have finally found my place in life and realised what makes me happy – my involvement in the Arts. Kapiti College has provided me with so many opportunities. I have been a member of the Arts Council and was Deputy Arts’ Captain in Year 12. I have been involved with musicals, Film Club, barbershop, Variety Concert, Stage Challenge, and Shakespearean productions. Drama classes from Year 9 helped give me the confidence, skills and encouragement to get stuck in. Apart from my involvement in the Arts, I have been

on the school’s 40 Hour Famine organising committee, played 1st XV rugby and served on the school council. Getting so involved has really made me thoroughly enjoy my years at Kapiti College. I have met so many inspiring people. There are so many leadership opportunities such as peer mediation, peer support or being a captain for a particular job. I am proud to now represent Kapiti College as Head Boy. My advice is to get stuck in. The activities you get involved in will be one of the highlights of your College years.

Community Service

Kapiti students are encouraged to give service to the wider community. Fundraising in 2011 contributed $20,000 to a range of causes: sponsoring activities for cancer children in the Wellington area, supporting the Christchurch Earthquake and Japanese Tsunami appeals and for

During my five years at Kapiti College, I have had a truly exceptional experience. I believe that the guidance and assistance offered here creates top performers in our community and our country. Kapiti College has a very accepting environment: everyone’s opinions are heard and student ideas are often put into action. There is a strong focus on students showing initiative and senior student leadership creates positive and realistic role models for the younger students. I have been involved in too many extra-curricular activities to list – across the Arts, sport and service. Some of the highlights have been: Performing Arts Tour, the Next

World Vision. A dedicated group of students have organised activities and fundraising for 40 Hour Famine, raising well over $30,000 over the last three years. This year, the Head Students are also supporting Mary Potter Hospice Kapiti and have raised $4,000 thus far for the cause.

Generation Leadership Conference and playing 1st XI Girls’ Football. There are so many opportunities to support students in developing from children to young adults. A point of difference that has literally opened up a whole new world for me is the international student programme at the College. I have created lifelong friendships with students from all over the world and I was even lucky enough to visit some of them in Germany last year, an experience that has now sparked my passion for travelling.

A Welcoming Environment We make every effort to make the transition to secondary school as seamless as possible for our Year 9s. This process begins with the collection of information on each student from primary school and the use of this to carefully place students in the right classes at college. Senior student mentors are attached to each Year 9 form class for Term One. From the beginning of the year, our newcomers take part in activities, both in form classes and as a year group, which are designed to involve them in the life of the College.

Starting Pastoral Care

Academic Excellence

Students new to college have different needs to those of senior students. In recognition of this, we operate a dedicated junior school pastoral programme headed by an Assistant Principal and run by a group of specialist staff, from form teachers and Deans to Guidance Counsellors and a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour. Our open door philosophy means we work closely with students and families. The parent portal allows you to track your child’s progress online in achievement, behaviour and attendance.

The work habits and subject knowledge needed to achieve success in NCEA must have its foundation at junior school level. Our junior graduation system challenges junior students to set goals around

I came here from Raumati Beach Primary. I thought it would be really scary and I was nervous but I quickly made heaps of new friends and everyone was so friendly that soon it was just like normal school. The first week was more about getting to know the school. My form teacher showed us around and older students were really helpful – they look after you and answer any questions. The people in my formclass are really nice and funny and I like my form teacher, Mr Blank. Everyone got to know each other on our noho and we played lots of games. The beach tabloids were fun; my form class supported me in the swimming relay and it was fun carrying Mr Dagger around

in a wheelbarrow. Youth Week was cool too, especially the skateboarding. I am in a digital class and find it easier to use a device when I struggle to spell words and want to write a lot. You learn heaps and the teachers are really nice. My favourite subject is Outdoor Education; we go on a three day camp at Otaki Forks and rock climbing in Wellington. I have also been to Wellington for a touch tournament and because I came fifth in the school cross country, I went to interschools. I’m really lucky because I get so many opportunities at Kapiti College.

College academic excellence and take charge of their achievement from the beginning of their secondary school life. Students are placed in ability-based Mathematics classes and we also offer junior students

who have a proven talent in a particular academic area the opportunity to study at higher levels. Our Learning Support programme includes in-class teacher-aide time and our literacy option headed by a trained SPELD teacher. We offer a wide range of option subjects to students from Film Making and Dance to three languages and Philosophy (see option grid page 9). Combining English and Social Studies reduces class changes for students.

I made the decision to come to Kapiti College from Pukerua Bay for many reasons. I liked the convenience of the travel - the bus picks us up at 8am and delivers us straight to school and I am home by 4pm- and the subjects like English and languages looked really good to me. Also, my dad says there is an energy about the College and that people really care about the school. There are so many opportunities for Year 9’s here. I want to make a difference in the world, so I was so glad when I got the chance to be involved in the 40 Hour Famine Committee, distributing booklets and helping organise

A Digital Focus The workplace of tomorrow will expect a high level of familiarity with technology. To prepare our students for this, we are encouraging 2013 Year 9 students to bring their own digital devices along to work on, whether these be laptops, tablets or netbooks. The College has wireless throughout and students are able to log on to the internet. We strongly recommend bringing devices which have a long battery life, but there will be battery-charging lockers available. Students can also access over 250 computers in rooms and pods around the school.

the sleepover. I am also in the Year 9 Council-we meet with the Dean every week to organise events for Year 9. I am in a netball team and an extra in the school production. Although Kapiti College is a big school, it has a family feel. The teachers are really good and quite nice too! I think I now know everyone in Year 9. I have kept all my old friends and made so many new ones.

Academic Success

Achievement at Kapiti

Supporting Individual Achievement

Beyond Class

At Kapiti College, our students are expected to achieve at their full academic potential. In 2011, the College outperformed all other co-educational secondary schools in the Wellington region for overall NCEA passes. Results were particularly outstanding at Level Two where 91% of students passed. Kapiti College girls perform at a level commenserate with girls at single sex decile 10 schools, such as Wellington Girls. We welcome comparisons with other schools. The photo above shows some winners of University Excellence Scholarships for 2012.

To maintain high standards, we have a system of personalised support for students. Every student has an Academic Coach (either their form teacher, Dean or a member of Senior Management) who regularly interviews them about their academic progress and supports them if they are underperforming. Students at risk are identified at key points throughout the year. Parents and students can access notes on the interviews online, along with a student’s academic results, attendance and their behavioural record.

Dedicated staff support academic success in their subjects through outside class tutorials including a school-wide scholarship programme of specialist classes and tutorials. Students may study subjects at different NCEA levels in line with their ability. Careers interviews, courses and evenings provide information about further education and the workplace. We have strong links with universities, polytechnics and the Correspondence School. The latter offers courses that are not part of the school curriculum.

Charles Year 12

I first undertook NCEA qualifications in Year 9 when I was encouraged to try some Level 1 Mathematics and Computing standards. This went well, so in Year 10 I did Computing, Mathematics, English and Accounting and attained NCEA Level 1 endorsed with Excellence. I also gained NCEA Level 2 in the process. In Year 11, with the encouragement of my teachers and Mr Western and Mr Kane, I continued those subjects at a higher level and took on Level 3 Economics, Calculus and a course of mixed Levels 2 and 3 English standards. I gained NCEA Level 3 endorsed with Merit, National Certificates in Computing (Level 3 and 4) and in Mathemat-

ics (Levels 1 and 2) and University Entrance. This year, I am doing Music for the first time (Level 2). I am also retaking Calculus, with a focus on gaining scholarship, and am enrolled in Linear Maths and Calculus extra-murally through Massey University. I have greatly appreciated Kapiti College’s flexibility in putting together such a varied course for me. This has allowed me to make the best possible use of schooling hours, so I don’t have to worry about running out of time to devote to my other passion, road cycling, which the school has also supported me in pursuing to a national level.

Despite being heavily involved in extra-curricular activities at the College, I was really happy to get an Excellence endorsement in Levels 1 and 2 NCEA, thanks in a big way to the help of my teachers. I am a Youth Ambassador for World Vision and travel New Zealand speaking to students about getting involved in the 40 Hour Famine. Last year, I visited Mali to see World Vision’s work for myself. This year, I led the 40 Hour Famine Team at College We held a Global Leadership Convention on Poverty at school with 330 students and organised over 150 students at the “Shantytown Sleepover”. I was in this year’s Shakespeare in Schools

nationals after my group won at regionals. With all of these activities, fitting in my school work is challenging! I have to make the most of all my time in class and find that easier to do because that’s what the teachers expect. I attend Maths and English tutorials where the teachers are really nice and helpful and I can email teachers with any questions I have. Media Studies has a useful wikispace site which has heaps of extra resources and I attend History Scholarship sessions. Everyone here will give you the help you need to achieve .

A Focus on the Arts

Creativity

Kapiti College has a proud tradition of excellence in the Performing Arts. There is a vibrant artistic life in the school. We offer a range of subject choices from Drama and Music to Film Making, Dance and Arts Extension. Students work in wellresourced, modern spaces with highly qualified, dedicated staff. Beyond the classroom, Arts students and those with an interest who do not formally take an Arts subject, are offered an enviable number of extra-curricular opportunities to master skills and display their talent.

Caleb Year 10

Music

Kapa Haka

Through the Music Department, professionals offer tuition in instruments from violin to voice. In groups from chamber music ensembles to rock bands, your child can participate in music competitions, concerts and tours and provide music for school productions and celebrations. Our students make it into regionals and nationals in competitions such as Rockquest, the Manawatu Jazz Festival, the Secondary School Chamber Music Competition and the Barbershop National Championships. They have been in the Secondary Schools’ Choir and the Youth Orchestra.

We are privileged to have the College’s Kapa Haka group, Te Kahui Raukura, represent us at all our ceremonial events. Their expert tutors prepare them for the regional Kapa Haka competition each year. All-comers are welcome to join this enthusiastic, talented group.

I came to Kapiti College because I knew that people good at Performing Arts came here. My main interests are barbershop and dance. I get to work with older boys who are strong dancers in productions, Stage Challenge and dance shows. I meet lots of students from Years 9 to 13 who are involved in Music, Drama and Art by being in the Arts Council; we organise performances and trips. I have been on the Performing Arts Tour to North Island primary schools and the Junior Arts Tour. I can take dance as an option here. There are students of all abilities in the class and I enjoy teaching others sometimes. The teachers are great; they are

dancers themselves and practise with us so that we can change moves to make everyone look good and take full part. They give us heaps of useful feedback. If we need to practise outside class time, they book the dance studio for us. They get in dancers who are experts at different styles to teach us – everything from ballet to Zumba and Hip Hop. This year, I am in the Sports Performance class too. I have my own fitness programme which really helps me with my dance training. People come up and say nice things when you perform here. The performing arts are really well supported by the school and students.

&

Drama and Dance

Performance

Drama and Dance are high-profile performing arts at the College. Opportunities for performance include the annual College Variety Concert, Performing Arts Tour and Dance Show. In 2012, the school’s major production was the musical, ‘West Side Story’. Past productions

Film Making

have included, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. Bi-annually we showcase students’ talents in choreography, acting, singing, dance, costume making and set design by entering them in Stage Challenge. In 2011, Stage Challenge involved 125 of our students. Kapiti College teams have also had a lot of success in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare in Schools Competition, winning the regionals many times and performing with distinction in the national finals, claiming several major awards.

As soon as I arrived at Kapiti College, I was encouraged to take part in a vast amount of activities. The staff at Kapiti College are really supportive of the students and encourage us to make the most of our time here. This has really helped me excel in one of my main passions – the performing arts. I’ve been involved in Stage Challenge, Variety Concerts and Performing Arts’ Tours. I’ve been given some amazing opportunities, such as performing in the Barbershop Girls’ Chorus and going to the New Zealand Secondary School Nationals several times. I have travelled with the senior choir to Melbourne and will go to the USA this year to perform in the World Choir Games. I have been the

We are very conscious of being Peter Jackson’s old school and keenly support student film making. Films produced both in the Film Making option at all levels and those made independently can enter our College ‘Koscars’ which is sponsored by Fuji Xerox and ends with a Hollywoodstyle awards ceremony. Students and staff also enter the 48 Hour Film Competition. Our film studio features both an acting and filming space and an editing suite for students to learn a wide range of academic and technical skills.

lead in school productions and attended the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare in Schools nationals three times. In 2012, I directed a student piece for Shakespeare in Schools which was also granted entry into nationals. All these activities have really helped me grow as a person, gain confidence and acquire leadership skills which helped me become Arts Captain for 2012. The amazing experiences I have had at Kapiti College have really influenced my choice for future studies. Next year, I hope to attend the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art. I encourage all new students to get involved, as I did.

Sport

Sporting Options

Taking Part

Our Facilities

We offer several courses designed for athletes. Physical Education is available at all levels, while at Year 10 students who show talent in their sport are invited into Sports Performance course. Most of our students choose to be involved in sports outside the classroom and we offer a wide range of team and individual sports. Whether it be for fun, fitness or serious competition, students are spoilt for choice. All the traditional sports are on offer and new options, such as the recent additions cheerleading and waka ama, are constantly being added according to student interest.

Alongside their weekly fixtures, Kapiti students compete in interschool competitions and exchanges. They play at the local, regional and national level representing the College. A number of our students are national and even international champions in their sport. Kapiti College places an emphasis on good sportsmanship. We are proud of the way our sportspeople conduct themselves on the field and when representing the College at away tournaments. The camaraderie and good-hearted competition between Houses at our annual Athletics Day is a highlight on our sporting calendar.

Our new Sport and Recreation Centre, gym, weights’ room, dance studio, rugby and football fields, and netball and tennis courts are the envy of other schools.

Adam Year 13

Over the years, I have had success in several sports, largely thanks to the College being so flexible and supportive. In junior school, I was free to have a go at all types of sport - I just put my hand up. I played waterpolo for the first time and was introduced to ‘Get to Go’ adventure multiracing. I chose to try out for the higher levels in rugby, although I was just as free to play socially, and the College put me forward for the HorowhenuaKapiti Under 15s. Now I’m in the 1st XV. I was able to do athletics and cross country competitively at College and travelled to nationals. In Year 10, I went on OPC; the abseiling, caving and overnight were awesome challenges.

I still get involved. Last year, I learnt to snowboard on the ski trip. I have travelled to North Island champs for swimming, done triathlons and kept up my adventure racing: my team have reached the final of the Hillary Challenge three times. Through my work now as Sports Captain, I enjoy watching the juniors take responsibility and show enthusiasm in the events the Sports Council organise, such as Year 9 Trophy. My teachers help me to balance involvement in sport with doing well in class: I have got NCEA with an endorsement each year and am aiming for Excellence again this year!

& Outdoors In the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom

Outdoor Education is a popular option class for juniors, with a course also available at senior level.

Opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors beyond the classroom include taking part in a variety of outdoor challenges. College teams have represented the Wellington region in recent years in both the Hillary Challenge and ‘Get to Go’ competitions. A significant number take part in the Outdoor Pursuits programme in Year 10. All Year 12s have the opportunity to take part in a Leadership camp in Tongariro National Park at the end of the year.

Over my four years at Kapiti College, I have been offered so many amazing opportunities – in sport and so many other areas. As a junior, I was girls’ cross-country and swimming champion. I have also been part of the College athletics team, competing both locally and regionally. Doing Hillary Challenge has meant me going to Tongaririo National Park to compete with other schools in adventure racing. I enjoy getting others enthusiastic about their sport through working on the school Sports Council. The organising work I do on this and being on the 40 Hour Famine team, the School Council and Youthweek committee

have really helped me develop my leadership skills. I have also been in Stage Challenge. I like that at Kapiti students can put forward an idea and teachers encourage you to get it done. The College follows my progress in my activities and publicises them – either in newsletters or the website, such as when I do surf lifesaving, triathlons (I won the Kapiti Women’s Tri twice), national swimming and running events and my work on the Kapiti Coast Youth Council. I look forward to new challenges over my time left at College. I achieved NCEA endorsed with Merit at Level 1 and am on track to hopefully get endorsement this year too.

Overseas Students

International

Kapiti College attracts many international students because we are situated in a small, safe, clean and friendly beach community. Our internationals come from as far afield as Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Sweden, and Thailand. While here they will improve their English, gain qualifications to enter a New Zealand or overseas university and experience a new way of life. ESOL classes and our Language Academy ensure that non-English speakers get the best possible start. The record of our internationals succeeding at university speaks for itself.

Caring for Internationals

Involvement in College Life

Sister Schools

Students live in approved homestay accommodation with Kiwi families close to the College. Our Home-Stay Co-ordinators are continually checking on the welfare of our internationals outside school. Director of International Education, Steve Burt, oversees the programme and student welfare, monitoring academic progress and assisting with enrolment to universities. He maintains contact with families and visits when he markets overseas. The College has been involved in international education for twenty years and we understand the importance of pastoral care.

Students are encouraged to participate in many activities where they can meet Kiwi and international friends, learn new skills and have fun outside class time. There are a large number of sporting and cultural activities from football, basketball, volleyball and badminton to choirs and bands. International students have trips to Wellington, shared lunches and dinners, a ski trip, a formal ball and dinner, and a staff/student lunch. A very exciting element is our Academies where internationals can learn to fly, ride horses or play rugby or golf under expert tuition.

The College has sister schools in China, Japan and Thailand. Students from these schools visit Kapiti regularly, staying with local families and experiencing Kiwi hospitality. In turn, Kapiti students have the opportunity to travel to their sister schools and have always met with generosity from their hosts. Later in 2012, a group will be travelling to No 57 School in Beijing, experiencing classes in Chinese culture and visiting everything from the Forbidden City to the Great Wall. Our sister school exchanges are invaluable for broadening the cultural experiences of Kapiti students.

I came to Kapiti College from Hong Kong two years ago. This is a good place to learn. I like the teaching style here – I have more freedom to think for myself and solve problems especially in my two favourite subjects, Physics and Economics. I hope to go to Auckland University to study one of those next year. I am aiming for an Excellence endorsement in NCEA Level 3 this year. What is especially special about Kapiti College is the friendly, encouraging atmosphere for international students. I belong to several sports teams (including the

Hockey 1st XI) and Kiwi students come and cheer us on. They are real friends to me and we socialise together. Another thing is my amazing host family, they treat me like I am one of their children. My brother saw how much I was enjoying it here and he has come here now from Hong Kong and, of course, he’s enjoying it too.

Kapiti Abroad

College groups have been regular visitors to overseas destinations. Last year saw a visit by students of French to Paris and beyond, while a group of Japanese learners will be travelling to Tokyo, Hiroshima and Osaka in October 2012. 2012 is a busy year for overseas trips, with a Social Science group off to Vietnam, the Choir off to the United States for the World Choir Games and a group travelling to Cambodia for their World Challenge, as they did in 2011 to Northern India.

When I first got to New Zealand, I was really confused and nervous, but just one day at Kapiti College was enough time for me to feel happy and safe. On my first day at school, I had enormous support from the staff and students in the International Department, and this has continued throughout my whole time here. It was also amazing how I felt embraced by the Kiwi students and teachers. They were all really careful and attentive with me, as they are with all the international students. The thing I have enjoyed the most at Kapiti College has been my involvement in the arts and sport. I have been

in a musical production and played volleyball outside class time and I have even taken dance and drama as subjects. Brazilian students just don’t get these kinds of opportunities. I’m really glad that Kapiti College has provided me that. New Zealand is now my second home and Kapiti College is my second family and I will carry that forever and wherever I go.
