Marlborough Campus

Marlborough Region Marlborough is located close to the heart of New Zealand, on the north east corner of the South Island, due west of Wellington city. Marlborough is synonymous internationally for its distinctive, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc. It is New Zealand's largest winemaking region with around 166 wineries and 460 grape growers and over 22,000 hectares planted in grapes. Marlborough is also known for its idyllic Sounds - sunken valleys which create a network of tranquil clear waterways amidst regenerating and virgin native forests. The Sounds are home to treasured bird and sealife - terns, shags, herons, blue penguins, dolphins, seals, and native forest birds, all easily viewed by private boat or charter tour. The renowned 71km Queen Charlotte Track, a 3-4 day walk, curls around coves, inlets and along skyline ridges between the breathtaking Kenepuru and Queen Charlotte Sounds.

People The commercial hub of Marlborough (population 46,000) is Blenheim. Originally a provincial service town to the farming community, it is increasingly geared towards urban lifestyle, visitor needs and the dominant wine industry, a meld of modern sophistication and relaxed ambience. North is Picton, seaport gateway to the stunning Marlborough Sounds. In Marlborough there are eight Iwi with tangata whenua (people of the land) status: Ngai Tahu, Ngati Apa, Ngati Koata, Ngati Kuia, Ngati Rarua, Ngati Toa, Rangitane and Te Ati Awa.

Marlborough Campus Specialising in viticulture and aviation, NMIT's Marlborough campus is the smaller of the institute's two main campuses with about 200 equivalent full time students. Situated about 20 minutes' walk from Blenheim city centre, the attractive campus boasts an onsite vineyard, hair salon, beauty salon, library and student café. Also onsite is the Marlborough Wine Research Centre which features a state of the art winery, laboratories, a technology transfer centre and sensory wine tasting room.

Accommodation Accommodation options for students studying at the Marlborough Campus include private board, flatting, B&B's, hostels or homestays. Students studying aircraft maintenance engineering at RNZAF Base Woodbourne are able to take advantage of accommodation facilities on the Base. Pam runs her own accounting business, Benseman Contracting Limited. She enrolled at NMIT's Blenheim campus because she wanted to upskill and become a fully fledged accountant. Ask about:

Imagine graduating from NMIT and then working for one of the biggest construction and project management companies in the world - Bechtel. Shaun Heath is proud to have had that experience after completing NMIT's Bachelor of Information Technology. Bechtel's has over 100 years experience building well known projects including, the Hoover Dam and NASA's facilities, and their biggest clients are the US Government and Oil companies around the world. "A great highlight for me was when I was recommended to look after the IT requirements for the CEO, Riley Bechtel, for his London visits. It was very nerve racking and had its moments, but it was a great achievement." Shaun Heath's NMIT degree in Information Technology has enabled him to work in a diverse range of environments, from high profile companies such as, L'Oreal and Bechtel's in London, Bechtel's in Brisbane and Sealord in New Zealand. "The big thing that has helped me throughout my career is the communication skills that they really push at NMIT. Communication is where the IT industry is beginning to focus. Project wise, working as a team and how you present yourself is vital. You have to have the skills to sit in front of a client who may have a 2.5 billion dollar project at stake and you are a vital part of that project. If the IT system fails it could be costing them $100,000 plus an hour for every hour the system is down! That's why I recommend getting stuck in to all the communication courses NMIT offers on its IT degree programme."

Kate Nalder Registered Nurse, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne Kate Nalder was recruited to a hospital in Melbourne after completing her Bachelor of Nursing at NMIT in 2006. Kate, 24, now lives in downtown Melbourne and works as a registered nurse in Alfred Hospital's Cardio Thoracic and Coronary Care Unit, a job she finds keeps her on her toes. "I love the challenge. Every day is different in that ward and nothing is predictable. I work with a fantastic team and a diverse range of patients, so I never get bored," she says. Kate says she felt well prepared to start her new role after completing her nursing education at NMIT. "I found that when I started work, I didn't feel too much out of my depth thanks to the number of clinical placements we'd had on the course. "Also the amount of mental health course work and placements we'd had taught me a lot about how to deal with patients and their families - which is such a key part of nursing," she says.

Naomi Hampson Professional Nanny Naomi Hampson knows she has one of the most important jobs in the world. The 21 year old from Golden Bay looks after other people's most prized assets - their children. "I get them breakfast, take them to school and then ferry the school age kids to various sports and activities later in the day. It's full on, but it's fun!" Naomi is responsible for four children, ranging in age from six months to 15 years old, from 7.30am until 4.30pm five days a week. While it may seem a huge responsibility, Naomi is confident she has all the skills required learnt on the Nanny Certificate programme at NMIT in 2005. "I'd been interested in early childhood education but wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to a three year course only to find I didn't want to work with children." "The one year Nanny course gave me the experience and qualification to look after children and gauge whether or not this was the path I wanted to take. I love it, I have complete freedom with the children and I'm treated like one of the family." Naomi plans her days around the children, fitting in housework duties and time out for herself when the little one is asleep. "I'm very conscious of the huge responsibility I have, but the training on the Nanny course really has given me the confidence to know I can deal with it. We learnt everything from practical parenting skills through to behavioural methods, as well as getting hands on experience on various placements" Naomi says. No stranger to family dynamics, Naomi is one of four children and Aunt to a number of nieces and nephews. "I know the importance of family and it's wonderful to be able to contribute to another." Naomi's employer, Fiona Craven says the family struck gold with Naomi and they're reassured to have someone who has a respected qualification. "Naomi just makes my life so much easier. Her involvement gives me the time and energy to really enjoy my children. When I get home from work I know they'll be safe and happy. I don't worry on any front when I am away from the house."

There is high demand for people with mechanical engineering qualifications in New Zealand. In addition, engineers enjoy significantly higher incomes than the general population, with many earning salaries between $30,000 and $70,000, depending on their level of expertise. He's completed his Certificate in Automotive Engineering at NMIT and is now into the second year of an apprenticeship with MS Ford in Richmond. "I love the whole diagnostic side of things. If a vehicle comes in with an electrical fault and you can figure out what's wrong and fix it that's a good feeling. I really enjoy that technical side of things." Sam knew what he wanted to do when he left Nayland College and he was set on staying local - the key reason he chose NMIT's course. "I'm really glad I chose NMIT. It was not only easier staying and studying with my friends, the biggest thing was to be able to stay and home and study while I wasn't earning any money. I saved heaps doing that." The certificate course is mixture of classroom work and practical training in NMIT's workshop. Sam says it was the perfect balance. "We'd be in the classroom in the morning then into the workshop in the afternoon. It was a great setup. There was everything there; it was all what you'd find in a standard workshop if not more and the tutors got you familiar with all the machines."

Xin Zheng Cellarhand, Delegats When Xin Zheng arrived at Marlborough Boys College as an 18 year old his parents planned that he'd improve his English, train to become an engineer and return to China and his family. Now at age 24, Xin is working for top New Zealand winery Delegats with aspirations to become a winemaker. So what happened? " Well, I did what my parents wanted and after college went to study engineering at Canterbury University. I was top of my class but it wasn't enough. I realised this was not the path I wanted to take for my life. I wasn't passionate about engineering and I need to be passionate about what I do. I do have that passion for wine. " So he quit Canterbury and returned to Blenheim to study viticulture and wine science at NMIT. "I could have done it in lots of places but Blenheim was great for lots of reasons - 60% of all New Zealand wines are made there, the classes at NMIT were small and supportive and they had great facilities for winemaking, and we were making our own . It was brilliant." Xin has accepted a permanent job as a cellar hand at Delegats. "It's like being a chef, no matter how good your qualifications you have to start doing the basic jobs and do them well and then you move up as you learn new skills."
