National Tertiary Education Consortium

Welcome Welcome to the National Tertiary Education Consortium (Ntec). Ntec consists of National Technology Institute (NTI), Concordia Institute of Business (CIB), The College of Future Learning NZ (FutureCOL) and NZ Institute of Learning and Development (NZILD), tertiary institutes preparing students for careers in adult education, computing, business and hospitality. Concordia’s English Academy (CEA) offers a wide selection of English programmes, including general, business, academic, IELTS and TESOL. Ntec is proud to be one of the few educational institutes that has a computing initiative to fully integrate information communication technologies across all its campuses. Every Diploma student is provided with a notebook/netbook PC that is preloaded with the latest Microsoft packages. Our campuses are wi-fi enabled and online learning is facilitated by the use of Moodle, an e-learning portal. These initiatives ensure Ntec students have the competitive edge in today’s information age.

Ntec has developed a reputation for being friendly, caring, and welcoming, and has a multi-cultural staff with wide experience in education for international students. Our tutors, counsellors and support staff are happy to mentor and give guidance that will help students to get the most out of their study and to reach their full potential. New Zealand’s immigration policy recognises that many international students would like to stay on and work in New Zealand. At Ntec, we equip our students with professional skills, provide them exposure to New Zealand work culture, and assist them in integrating into the New Zealand environment and to find employment. We also encourage our students to participate in volunteer work as a way of getting them to learn more and appreciate the New Zealand culture and values. It gives me great pleasure to advise that in the External Evaluation and Review by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), a member school

of the consortium, Concordia Institute of Business, was awarded the best possible rating, scoring “Excellent” in each of the focus areas and overall achieving “Highly Confident” for both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment. In this comprehensive review, NZQA looked at the areas of student achievement, the value of outcomes for students and other stakeholders, programmes and activities, teaching, student guidance and support, and governance and management, and these were all rated excellent. We are pleased with this endorsement of our focus on quality outcomes. Studying at Ntec offers you a rewarding experience in a new culture and environment. We look forward to your joining us soon.

New Zealand (Aotearoa – Land of the Long White Cloud) New Zealand is made up of two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, and has a population of 4 million people, three quarters of whom live in the North Island. The capital city is Wellington, which is located on the southern tip of the North Island. New Zealand is a unique country with beautiful scenery and friendly people. New Zealand is a parliamentary democracy offering a safe political environment for international students and visitors. It is primarily a European culture with a strong Maori cultural heritage. New Zealand has absorbed many of the rich and historic cultural elements from the Maori and Pacific Island heritages and now from its rapidly growing multi-cultural Asian communities. The following internet sites can help with more information about living in New Zealand: www.newzealand.com/International/ www.newzealandeducated.com/

Why Study in Auckland

Auckland

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. Over 1.5 million people live in the greater Auckland area, which represents about one third of the population of the whole country. Auckland has been ranked the best city in the Asia Pacific area and the 3rd best city in the world to live in, by the 2011 Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey. Auckland is built on a narrow isthmus between two harbours, and is surrounded by extinct volcanoes and picturesque islands. The climate is temperate, with warm summers (averaging 12º to 24ºC) and cooler winters (averaging 9º to 16ºC). The summer months are from December to March. Auckland is also the gateway to New Zealand for tourism and immigration. You can find out more about Auckland by visiting this website: www.aucklandnz.com/

Tauranga

Why Study in Tauranga

The Western Bay of Plenty, home of the city of Tauranga, is in the enviable position of being the fastest growing area in New Zealand. The Western Bay of Plenty is also one of New Zealand’s most sought after locations in which to teach, resulting in teachers of a very high calibre and excellent local facilities. Excellent education facilities and a superb recreational lifestyle ensure the international students are served well. Ask New Zealanders where they would most like to live and they’ll tell you Tauranga. And it shows, with over 100 people moving to the region every week. The region’s economic growth is also high, topping the country for the last two years. Many international students find part-time work in the orchards, ranging from horticulturists to fruit pickers and packers. There are also hospitality jobs available in cafes, restaurants and hotels. Tauranga will soon be New Zealand’s fourth largest city.

Why Study in Napier and Hastings

The two cities are known as “The Bay Cities” and are within 20 km of each other in Hawke’s Bay. They have a combined population of over 124,400, making the combined urban area the fifth-largest by population in New Zealand. Hawke’s Bay is commonly referred to as the ‘Fruit Bowl of New Zealand’ and is New Zealand’s largest food growing region with a wide range of produce. The region is famous for its stone fruit, vegetables, and wineries. Many students find part-time work within the horticulture industry and associated businesses including food processing, agricultural services and logistics. The service industry and tourism sectors are also growing rapidly. The Hawke’s Bay has almost twice the sunshine hours (2,090 hours) in comparison to the Bay of Plenty Tauranga (1,214 hours) ensuring a longer period for seasonal work opportunities.

Key Information For International Students Health Services Eligibility

Working and Living in New Zealand

Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.

Currently there is strong demand in New Zealand for skilled labour. International students are a valuable source of skilled migrants approximately one quarter of international tertiary students go on to become New Zealand residents.

Immigration New Zealand Student Visas International students are required to have a valid student visa during their stay in New Zealand. Once you have received an Offer of Place from Ntec and you have paid your tuition fees, you should apply for a student visa from your nearest Immigration New Zealand office (contact the New Zealand Embassy or High Commission for details).

Students may be permitted to work part-time while they are studying, and full-time on completion of study. Students may need to apply, and pay a fee, to Immigration New Zealand for a ‘Variation of Conditions’ to their Student Visa/Permit to be eligible to work in New Zealand. Full-time students on Diploma courses can apply for a change in their permit conditions that allows them to work part-time. Students studying English Language (on courses lasting at least 6 months) can also apply, but must have an IELTS score of at least 5.0. Students with valid work permits can use Student Job Search services (an enrolment fee applies). Student Job Search helps students find summer vacation and temporary or part-time work. See www.sjs. co.nz for further information. On completion of your Diploma studies, you are able to apply for a Graduate Job Search Visa which will allow you to stay in New Zealand for a period of up to 12 months to find suitable employment. You may also apply for a Work Visa. Completion of a Diploma may also entitle you to immigration points should you wish to consider migration to New Zealand. Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through Immigration New Zealand, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz See also Job Search Assistance, on page 18.

Pastoral Care National Technology Institute, NZ Institute of Learning and Development, The College of Future Learning NZ and Concordia Institute of Business have agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Minister of Education. Recognition of Prior Learning / Competencies If you already have other tertiary qualifications or previous work experience, you may be granted credit exemptions and may complete your qualification in a shorter time. We will be happy to discuss this with you before or after enrolment. Please contact the Director of Studies (see Contact Details on page 1).

Transport and Driving Auckland City has a comprehensive bus, rail and ferry system. Weekly fares range from approximately $14 to $48. Special discounted passes can be purchased at a bus or ferry terminal. Some students prefer to buy their own car. A second-hand car costs from approximately $2,000 upwards, a new car costs from $20,000. If you want to drive in New Zealand, you must have a driver’s licence. (See details about Drivers’ Licences at http:// www.ltsa.govt.nz/licensing/). As a driver, you must wear a safety seatbelt and make sure that any passengers wear seatbelts too. New Zealand has very serious penalties for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Facilities for female students Ntec goes the extra mile in addressing the concerns and needs of our students. We are mindful of the worries and concerns that parents have for their children, especially their daughters, when they begin a new chapter in their lives by studying in New Zealand. For many, this is the first time they are away from home. As such, we make special arrangements and provide accommodation for female students that is both safe and secure. The accommodation is provided on a firstcome-first-served basis.
