Auckland
Living in Auckland, New Zealand/Aotearoa
Auckland City and Harbour
New Zealand – there’s so much to see New Zealand is a similar size to Japan, California and Great Britain, but with a population of just over four million you will get a wonderful sense of space and freedom that you will find in few other places. Our unique and dynamic culture reflects Ma-ori, Pacific Island, European and Asian influences. New Zealanders are friendly, welcoming people who tend to be practical, value individuality and are quite relaxed.
Seeing the sights In your holidays and weekends you might decide to see more of the country. You could go hiking or skiing in one of the 14 national parks, go diving in one of the protected maritime parks or go fishing or sailing at one of our beautiful beaches in the Bay of Islands. Or perhaps you want to attend one of the many wine and food festivals across the country, or visit a local farmers market to sample the local specialities.
Auckland – there’s so much to do As New Zealand’s largest city – with1.5 million inhabitants – there’s always something happening in Auckland. With a huge range of diverse activities such as dance, music events, film festivals, yachting, cultural festivals, exhibitions, and sporting events your calendar will fill up in no time!
2
You can spend lazy days at the beach with friends or enjoy surfing, mountain biking or hiking in the area. New Zealanders love to entertain at home, so look forward to party, barbeque and dinner invitations. Auckland has some of the best cuisine (and coffee!) in the world, so take your time exploring the multitude of restaurants and cafes – you are sure to find something you love no matter what your taste and budget is. Being a large city, there are plenty of opportunities for part-time work. Our students often find part-time work in cafés, cinemas, fast-food outlets, gas stations, libraries and a variety of other places. Many of our graduates also use the contacts they have made while they’ve been studying and working part-time to find full-time work in Auckland once they finish their studies.
What's happening in Auckland City?
Auckland Viaduct
Here are some examples of events from a typical year in Auckland:
The Big Day Out New Zealand’s biggest (and happiest) music festival happens in January, bringing international and local acts together. With a mixture of dance, rock, alternative and soul music there is something there for everyone.
Pasifika Festival
The Lantern Festival As one of Auckland’s most popular summer events, the Auckland Lantern Festival brings Chinese New Year celebrations to a glowing finale with hundreds of beautiful lanterns, great food, fortune telling and performances.
Waiheke Jazz Festival World-renowned jazz musicians play in a weekend-long festival celebrating jazz in all its forms.
Held every March, this is a colourful showcase of food, art, tattoo design, music and tapestry drawn from all around the Pacific – including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Kiribati, Vanuatu, PNG and the Cook Islands, just to name a few.
Round the Bays Fun Run
Music in the Parks
Devonport, Waiheke Island and Kumeu Wine and Food Festivals
From January to April every year there is a series of over 40 free music concerts in parks around the city, showcasing rising stars, much-loved jazz veterans, pop icons, hip hop superstars and always a few surprises!
International Film Festival Auckland has many film festivals throughout the year, featuring French films, Italian films, Spanish films, not to mention the huge International Film Festival each July (visit www.nzff.co.nz for more info).
Join 70,000 other Aucklanders for this 13km fun run around the waterfront. If you don’t want to run, join the walkers and enjoy a barbeque at the end!
Sample the best of Auckland’s (and New Zealand’s) superb food and wine. This is just a small sample of what is available in the city year round. For details on these and other events, visit the Auckland City website, www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/whatson/events.

Find all the support you need Without leaving the campus
Deborah Camplin, Naomi Ataya and May Wang – Student Advisors, International Office.
You can get everything you need on campus from our expert and friendly staff, from visa support to help finding a job. The friendly International Office is your one-stop support centre where you can drop in and get the help you need. We offer: • Visa Support with fast turnaround when it’s time to renew your visa • Student Advisors to help you with academic course advice, entry requirements and any questions you may have about your study • An Insurance Officer to help you with insurance claims. The Career Centre (www.career.unitec.ac.nz) has experienced and qualified career consultants available for workshops and one-on-one sessions. • Apply for jobs through our job search website • Attend one of the graduate recruitment seminars with industry (organised by the Unitec Student Union, USU). There are Computing Labs you can use with free wireless access on campus. The Learning Centre offers free workshops, small group and one-on-one meetings with our specialist support staff to give you course-specific support, as well as help with general study skills. We have four Libraries across our campuses.
6
The Language Learning Centre has a wide range of language resources available, from course books and magazines through to DVDs and CD-Roms. We have a Prayer Room and also a Bank on campus. The Health Centre offers a comprehensive medical service with doctor and nurse appointments available. • There is a pharmacy on campus • The Counselling Centre offers you free confidential counselling. The Sports Centre offers excellent training facilities for all ages and fitness levels. You can play squash at the National Squash Centre, choose a yoga or pilates fitness class or use the weight room and cardio area. Concession and discount cards are available to students.
Find the pathway to success Flexible pathways to fast-track your career Regardless of your work or study experience, Unitec offers flexible pathways to fast-track your chosen career. At Unitec, you can build the study programme that suits you. You could start your studies with English and then move into a certificate, diploma or degree programme. Or begin with a degree or graduate diploma, and then continue on to a masters degree or a doctorate. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have good connections with their industry or profession.
You should make sure you know what your timetable is and when your free hours are – employers won’t be happy if you are late for work because of lectures. Equally, lecturers will not tolerate absences from class or very late assignments because you were working. If your studies are suffering because of your part-time job, you should re-think what you can realistically do. Whatever you do, don’t work over 20 hours a week – eventually the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and INZ will catch up with you and you could face very serious consequences.
Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, a great aspect to add to your CV which gives you a competitive advantage when you start to apply for jobs. Undertaking work experience as part of your study gives you the opportunity to prove yourself and opens the doors to your first job.
Inland Revenue Department
Degree students can also choose to study overseas for a semester or a year at one of our international partner institutions, which are listed on page 60.
Where to look for work
OUR GRADUATES FIND JOBS
You must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. You can visit the IRD at their website www.ird.govt.nz.
You’re in luck! First, check out Student Job Search on their website, www.sjs.org.nz. Both domestic and international students can use it – for you, you just need to register and then show your passport with the stamp that shows you can work.
Many of our graduates stay in Auckland or other parts of New Zealand because employers are always looking for the combination of theory and practical skills our students gain at Unitec. Others choose to settle in other countries, as the qualification you gain will be internationally recognised and the practical experience you will bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.
You can also visit the Careers Centre at Unitec. They are a lovely group of people who can help you with employment skills: writing your resume, interview skills, and where to look for a job. You can visit them anytime – you don’t need to wait until you’ve almost finished your qualification.
WORKING IN THE BUSINESS CAPITAL OF NEW ZEALAND
Outside Unitec there are many places to look. Check out the local and national newspapers, or have a look on the web – www.seek.co.nz or www.search4jobs.co.nz are great sites to look at.
Variation to Work Visa
If you are eligible to work 20 hours per week while you are studying, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This then allows you to work for up to 20 hours a week during the academic year (February to November). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays.
Don’t forget that with your work experience both in New Zealand and overseas and your Unitec qualification, will have lots of skills to offer your employer.
Employment There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland. However, it is unrealistic to think that you will get a job as soon as you jump off the plane! You first need to make sure that you have enrolled for your programme of study, found somewhere to live as well as being able to find your way around the city.

Refund policy for international students
Refund policy for international students GENERAL PROVISIONS Refunds of tuition fees for international students will only be made in accordance with the following policy: a. Payment of tuition fees indicates acceptance of a place in a programme at Unitec. By accepting a place in a programme at Unitec, a student enters a contract with Unitec for the period that tuition fees have been paid. All students may pay the tuition fee for one year in two instalments except that students in the following categories must pay the full-year tuition fee in one instalment prior to commencement of study: for full-year non-semesterised programmes, or in cases where Immigration New Zealand (INZ) regulations require payment of one year’s tuition fee in order to be granted a visa. (In these circumstances there is no refund of tuition fees.) b. Certificate in Intensive English – students enter a contract with Unitec for the number of weeks indicated in the Offer of Place and must pay the tuition fee for the length indicated. c. There will be no refunds for Summer School. d. Students (with the exception of Certificate in Intensive English students) who wish to defer to the following semester must notify Unitec no less than two weeks prior to the programme commencement. Certificate in Intensive English students who wish to defer to the following term must notify International no less than two weeks prior to the term commencement. e. There is no automatic right to a refund of fees if a student changes his/her mind about studying at Unitec. f. If an international student is on a Unitec student visa and fails to enrol there will be no refund for the period the visa was granted. g. No refunds will be given after programme commencement. For Certificate in Intensive English students programme commencement means the initial start date of the programme (as stated in the original Offer of Place letter). If a student wishes to extend this programme there will be no refund granted once payment is made.
h. All applications for refunds must be on the International Application for Refund form. For students (with the exception of Certificate in Intensive English students) supporting information must be submitted in writing. For Certificate in Intensive English students supporting documentation must be supplied and given to the Department of Languages. i. Refunds will be paid in NZ dollars OR by cheque, i. sent to the applicant’s agent, or ii. sent to another institution, if requested in writing with the applicant’s signature and supported by evidence of an offer of place by the other institution, or iii. under special circumstances paid directly into a nominated bank account. Applications for refunds will be considered under the following categories, which may require supporting documentation. Full refunds will be given where: a. INZ has refused to grant an initial Student Visa for study in New Zealand; b. INZ has refused to extend a Student Visa; c. Unitec is unable to proceed with the programme or classes offered. Full refunds will either be sent to the agent (in the home country if applicable) on sighting evidence that the student concerned has returned to their home country, or on sighting a changed visa (e.g: Visitors Visa or Work Permit) the refund can be given to the student in New Zealand. In all instances, INZ will be notified.
OTHER REFUNDS a. An international student in semesterised programmes who gains Permanent Residency will not receive a refund of fees for the semester in which residency is granted. However, they will be treated as a New Zealand Permanent Resident for the following semester and refunded any international fees paid beyond the semester in which residency was granted.
b. A Certificate in Intensive English student who gains Permanent Residency during the initial enrolment period (as stated in the Offer of Place letter) will not receive a refund of fees. c. International students in programmes designed with full-year non-semesterised courses (offered as two classes – semester A and semester B) must pay the international fees for the full year, and there will be no refund of tuition fees for that year even if Permanent Residency is granted during that year. d. If a student wishes to withdraw from their programme and an International Application for Refund is received no less than two weeks prior to the semester start date, a refund of 80% of tuition fees will be given. There will be no refund for International Applications for Refunds received after this time. All refunds will either be sent to the agent (in the home country if applicable) on sighting evidence that the student concerned has returned to their home country, or to the student in New Zealand on sighting a changed visa (eg: Visitors Visa or Work Permit). In all instances, INZ will be notified. For students transferring to other institutions see ‘e’. e. If a student wishes to transfer to another institution and an International Application for Refund is received no less than two weeks prior to the semester start date, 70% of the tuition fees will be refunded. There will be no refund for International Applications for Refunds received after this time. An offer letter from the other institution will be required for the refund to be arranged. The refund will either be sent directly to the institution or, on sighting a Student Visa for the other institution, the refund can be given to the student in New Zealand. INZ will be notified. f. Approval for refunds on a compassionate basis in exceptional circumstances (such as serious illness, etc) may be granted. The amount of the refund will be at the discretion of the International Director. The student must provide a completed application for a Variation of Enrolment or withdraw online.
