A team of seven WelTec students had an exciting win in an innovative partnership between WelTec and Meridian Energy in 2007. For several months nearly 100 students from WelTec’s Centre for Creative Technologies were working in teams on a project to help people manage how much energy they are using in the home. The teams were made up of students from a range of disciplines – information technology, digital media, visual arts, interior design and engineering. The teams each had to form themselves into a working team, develop ideas and present them to a selection panel. Some of the students’ ideas went on to the next stage of commercial development by Meridian. Meridian CEO Dr Keith Turner said that Meridian is always looking for innovative ways to help New Zealanders use power more efficiently. “Meridian wants to help raise consumers’ awareness of their current behaviours, inform them about choices and motivate action to reduce energy use,” said Dr Turner. “We also recognise the value of the up-and-coming talent in New Zealand tertiary institutions and want to support students to learn and work together in innovative ways.” Winning team member Sarika Rama said she really enjoyed the challenge of working with students studying other subjects on project work. “We got to understand how different disciplines’ brains work. It was pretty interesting. We ended up teaching each other about technology and creativity.”

Bachelor of Creative Technologies (BCT) student Lee Browne completed the Certificate in Visual Arts programme last year and moved into the first year of the BCT in March. The ability to staircase into degree-level programmes has meant that Lee has been able to build on her studies from last year, allowing her to gain Lee Brown two qualifications in three years. “In the Bachelor of Creative certificate programme we learnt the basics Technologies with photography, print making, drawing and workshop. In the BCT, we’ve built on that and have worked on collaborative projects, new media and critical studies and have handed in a body of work.” Lee has enjoyed the mixing of disciplines in her degree. “One of the new things for me has been new media. As a visual arts major, I find the collaborative and critical studies really good as we get to combine with students working in film. They have different skills so we learn from each other. You learn to change the way you’re talking about things and you learn to explain yourself more in this environment.” Lee has nothing but praise for the BCT teaching staff. “All the tutors are great. Our tutors aren’t just tutors; they are artists. We’re being taught by people that we aspire to be.”

Brian Faitele NZ Diploma in Business Accountant, Contact Energy
WelTec graduate Brian Faitele is a busy man, with what he calls the ‘role of a lifetime’ at Contact Energy as an Assistant Generation Accountant. Business wasn’t initially on the agenda for Brian, who began studying a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Chemistry and Physics straight after leaving school. He was halfway through his studies when he decided to make a major change.
“I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t right for me and I needed a change. I didn’t want to go back to university so I decided to enrol in the New Zealand Diploma in Business at WelTec. It was a great course and included the type of work that I was doing day to day so it was very practical. I also found it really flexible as I was able to study part-time, and then later made the decision to study full-time in my final year.” Brian hasn’t looked back since making the decision to resume his studies. “Something I developed at WelTec was confidence; all of the tutors contributed to that. They couldn’t have been more helpful. They became more than just lecturers – you really build a relationship and a rapport with the teaching staff that you don’t get at uni. “WelTec’s slogan ‘Become a New Professional’ fits so well – WelTec provided me with all the tools to get my job. The whole professional aspect that I developed at WelTec set me apart from other university graduates.” It didn’t take Brian long to find a job on completing his studies. He was hired just weeks after completing his diploma and he couldn’t be happier. He has no plans to leave the job he loves in any hurry. He’s currently working on completing his Stage One requirements for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA). He has come full circle now, working with the Contact Energy team in their recruitment drive for new graduates. His advice to graduates is that they couldn’t find a better company to work for and he’s keen to see more WelTec graduates follow his lead.
A broad-based qualification of six NZ Diploma in Business papers, four of which are compulsory. Often studied concurrently with the NZ Diploma in Business. Career opportunities Management and general business. Crosscrediting of papers towards a business degree is available at most New Zealand universities and polytechnics. Entry requirements 50 credits at NCEA level 2, including at least eight literacy credits or an equivalent qualification. See page 64 for more information.

A quality approach to quantity Tonchi Begovich found his niche, identified his target and had the motivation to get there. He just needed the skills and qualifications. He acquired both of these at WelTec.
Tonchi Begovich National Diploma in Quantity Surveying Redican Allwood
Tonchi had been working in the building industry for 15 years and had completed papers in architectural drawing. “But I worked out that quantity surveying was my niche in the industry. So I started study at WelTec while I was working and I was able to get credits for my architecture papers toward my National Diploma,” says Tonchi.
After his first year of part-time study he worked out that, to get where he wanted, he had to get a job with a major construction firm. With this vision in mind he identified the place he wanted to work and set about, successfully, getting a job with Redican Allwood Ltd in Waikanae. He managed, with the support of his employers, to complete his diploma while working full time. “The WelTec tutors have also been excellent. They are very capable and flexible. They also expect the best from their students and encourage and nurture students to excel. It’s a good qualification. “The diploma has meant that I have a good grasp of finance, construction methods, project management and problem solving within the industry. “I believe quantity surveying is the best job in the building industry. I get the big view of the whole project and have to understand the building intimately. On top of that I also get to deal with some great people from all facets of the industry.”

Educating the community about HIV WelTec graduate Lyndon Moore has recently joined the New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) as a Counsellor and is passionate about raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic.
Lyndon Moore Bachelor of Counselling Counsellor NZ AIDS Foundation (NZAF)
“It is important for New Zealanders to understand HIV and its effects on individuals and society as a whole. We live in a world where people are still reluctant to accept that it is a problem.”
Lyndon first started at the New Zealand AIDS Foundation in March last year, when he was approached by one of his tutors about a work placement there. “They [NZAF] were very professional when I was on my work placement; they treated me with respect and encouraged me to apply for a permanent position when I graduated. “It is satisfying to be with people on different journeys and to see how their lives change. Seeing people accept themselves and love themselves more is the best part of my job. It’s good to be part of something that is giving back to the community.” Lyndon is looking forward to his future with NZAF. “The New Zealand AIDS Foundation goes where there is a need. I like the idea of being with people when they need it most and sharing those experiences with them.”

Switched on to trades Helen O’Rourke is wiring up a career in electrical engineering. Helen is completing an apprenticeship with Newpower Electrical. The company offered her a job following an interview arranged by a tutor at WelTec. “I wanted to do something practical,” says Helen, ”not a sitting down job. I enjoy working on different construction sites and being part of making a building happen. The electrics bring it to life; you just need the people to turn it all on.” Outside her work and study Helen plays drums in a rock band and records music in her home studio, where her aptitude with technology also comes in handy. In the not too distant future she is looking forward to travelling and working overseas. “When I’ve got my electrical ticket I want to go to England, then travel the world,” she says.

The WelTec pre-trade course suited Manu’s hands-on approach. “WelTec is really practical; it’s a totally different experience to school. I was learning new skills and it was exactly what I wanted to do.” He found the tutors were a tremendous help throughout his studies. “Having tutors who have already been in trades was invaluable. They know the industry really well.”
Offered as a night class, two hours per week for 12 weeks.

WelTec sows the seeds for learning Last year Richard Grant enrolled in the Certificate in Horticulture at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) and fulfilled his long-term ambition – to begin a career in horticulture. “I had been interested in doing something in the gardening/ landscaping area for some time. WelTec appealed because of the mixture of theory and practical work. I had done a short course at WelTec many years back and it was something that I was keen to continue.” “There was plenty of help available at WelTec. I went through the Learning Centre to improve my study and time management skills. The tutors were very helpful and supportive. We were taken on various field trips, which I found to be a good introduction to the industry and what career options are available.” As a result of his experience, Richard wants to start his own gardening maintenance and design business and to do this he has continued with his studies with the Certificate in Landscape Construction and Design programme. “I need to learn the basics of landscape design – how to do things the correct way. I’ll be able to cross-credit my study from this year which should reduce the amount of time I will need to spend studying next year. I’m also interested in looking at courses that will help me with the business side of things. The challenge for me will be to create a business that I can grow – if you excuse the pun.”

A New Zealand First for Excellence in Education The School of Hospitality and Tourism at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) has been assessed as a centre of vocational excellence. A panel of external industry, academic and business experts judged the School against a set of internationally accepted criteria, based on those used in the UK to judge centres of vocational excellence. The School fulfilled all of the eight key criteria: leadership; relationships with industry; collaboration with other providers; teaching and scholarship; student success; national and international standing; responsiveness to national and regional goals; and planning and resourcing.
WelTec cookery student a winner Cookery student Phoebe Adams is having a stunner of a year. Already she has won the regional Worldskills competition for patisserie and picked up a two medals at the Food Show in Wellington.

High-pressure competition isn’t for everyone but Phoebe now has a taste for success. This is just the start for Phoebe – she will compete in Torque d’Or in August, and in September she will go on to compete in the national Worldskills competition with the dream of making the New Zealand team competing in Calgary next year.
After completing secondary school, Belinda Dunn planned a six-month working holiday in Australia. Nine years later she returned to New Zealand after having worked in various hospitality roles in France, Ireland, England and Australia. Belinda had worked in managerial roles while she was overseas but decided that she needed to gain a formal qualification. With that in mind, she enrolled in a Diploma in Hospitality Operations Supervision at WelTec. She completed the oneyear diploma in November last year and had a role as a Catering Floor Supervisor at Te Papa lined up the next month. Belinda says, “I enjoyed the programme at WelTec because it offered a lot of diversity and covered a broad range of areas. It built on my industry experience by providing the theoretical component that I had been missing. The one-year diploma was perfect for me.”
While Phoebe is modest about her chances she can’t say enough about the tutoring staff. “We are really lucky to have tutoring staff who go the extra mile for us with all the extra training sessions. They’ve been there to support me and I would never have had the kind of opportunities that I have experienced so far this year without them. I’m still processing my selection for Torque d’Or but I’m really excited to do my best, I think we’ll do well.”

The business of gaming Two Bachelor of Technology students from WelTec have developed a virtual drumkit in the same vein as Guitar Hero and Singstar. With a Nintendo Wii and some imagination, Cameron Tounge and Rhys Koedijk have created the prototype using a laptop, Bluetooth adapter, webcam and two LED displays. The project was completed as part of their final assignment. Both students had an interest in IT and gaming at school and decided to enrol in the one-year Diploma in Software Engineering at WelTec before moving on to the Bachelors degree. “WelTec is the only place that offered a diploma in software engineering,” says Rhys. “One of the great things about WelTec’s IT programmes is that you can staircase from certificate and diploma level programmes all the way through to degree level and the graduate diploma. There’s a good balance of theory and practice within the programmes. WelTec makes education that much more specific to what you are interested in and what you want to be doing career wise.”

Rising new professionals secure IT cadetships Five Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) information technology students have achieved the ultimate student dream – a $5,000 scholarship, a well-paid holiday job working on client projects and a foot in the door with a leading employer. Fronde, one of New Zealand’s leading IT companies, has selected the WelTec students for their cadetship programme from three information technology areas – Bachelor of IT, Diploma of Software Engineering and Graduate Diploma in Computer Assurance and Security. Ian Clarke, General Manager NZ South, at Fronde says that the company recognises the value of bringing young, talented individuals into its team. “Cadetships allow Fronde to identify potential high flyers in our industry at the beginning of their training and nurture them throughout their studies, while also building a strong working relationship that can form the foundation for long-term employment,” says Mr Clarke. “We were impressed with the calibre of applicants from WelTec. We have high expectations regarding the quality of candidates and a clear idea of what we want – self-starters, enthusiastic people who are likely to fit with our team.” Information Technology Programme Manager Robert Sutcliffe says that the experience will also help students see what the industry is really like and help them make decisions about how they will specialise in the future. “They will have access to real projects that they can use in their study and they can start to build networks within the industry. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the students,” says Mr Sutcliffe.

Kiwi Manager – the evolving student project A new piece of software that can detect computer network faults is being given away to schools, thanks to the ingenuity and hard work of several Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) degree and software engineering students.
Bo Li Diploma in Software Engineering Allied Telesis Network Engineer
WelTec Information Technology team leader Ian Hunter says that similar packages that are available commercially can cost up to $10,000.
“Kiwi Manager can keep an eye on the common network issues that cause about 90% of problems; things like overloading and loss of connection,” says Ian. “It will then signal the severity of the problem, so any issues that are indicated can be quickly rectified.” A demonstration at the recent U-Learn Education Conference in Christchurch aroused interest from schools around the country, which will receive free copies of the software. Ian says that the simple network health check was a project suggested by networking equipment manufacturer Allied Telesis. Kiwi Manager was developed over several years by generations of WelTec students working with Allied Telesis. It was finally prepared for release by Diploma in Software Engineering student Bo Li, working with WelTec’s Centre for Smart Product and Allied Telesis. Bo not only gained straight A grades for his study and received an award for top student, but was also awarded a prize for top project of the year for Kiwi Manager. “Working on Kiwi Manager gave me the chance to put my knowledge into practice and, more importantly, to delve much deeper into the networking and programming world,” says Bo. He has gone on to secure a job with Allied Telesis as a network engineer and says his work on Kiwi Manager definitely gave him a foot in the door.

Jonathan Young Certificate in Travel Hallmark Aviation
Opportunities for New Zealanders to work in the United States are few and far between. Not surprisingly, when the opportunity arose for a group of travel and tourism students to complete a oneyear internship programme with Hallmark Aviation in Los Angeles, many New Zealand graduates were keen to put their hand up for the job.
Hallmark Aviation’s Cathy Uran and Air New Zealand’s Sheila O’Neil presented to a group of enthusiastic travel and tourism students about the opportunities for graduates to work for Hallmark Aviation at the Air New Zealand terminal in Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). WelTec travel graduate Jonathan Young was one of the group chosen for the internship last year. This year, the students will have until October to consider this amazing opportunity, with interviews expected to take place with nominated candidates. Cathy says of the experience, “LAX is a great place to work. On their days off students have the opportunity to travel across the US. Our current interns have travelled to Florida, Nevada, Hawaii and all over the country.”

I like the teaching style at WelTec; it’s interactive and the tutors are always there to help. “Animal care is a lot more than just the care of animals – you learn about diseases, health and safety, anatomy and physiology. The work placements are great – when we get back to class, we get to talk about what we’ve seen and compare what we’ve learnt to the real world.” And what does the future hold for Aleisha? “Once I’m qualified I want to move overseas and work as a vet nurse, but my long-term goal is to own my own vet clinic.”
