CREATE A PLACE WITHIN A 12 INCH CUBE THAT ALLOWS A DEVOTEE OF THE GIVEN RELIGION (ISLAM), WHILE AMPLIFYING THE ELEMENT OF EARTH THROUGH THE FIVE SENSES, WITHOUT OVERT RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS AND UTILITIES. THE SITE IS LOCATED IN FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA AND ALL CORNERS MUST BE PHYSICALLY SEEN. THIS PROJECT WAS DONE DURING JUNIOR YEAR IN ARCH 3050.

OVERLACED CIRCULAR DESIGNS ON METAL FACADES IS TO PIQUE INTEREST, DRAWING PEOPLE CLOSER TO THE STRUCTURE. THE METALWORK IS ANALYZED AND ISLAMIC DESIGN IN ARCHITECTURE IS CONCLUDED. IT IS EXPECTED FOR PEOPLE TO TRACE THEIR FINGERS ALONG THE IRONWORK DESIGN TO FEEL THE SMOOTH METAL. THE OPEN SPACE TAKES IN LOTS OF NATURAL SUNLIGHT, PULLING SOMEONE INTO THE STRUCTURE. A LIGHT COLORED STONE ALTAR IS IN FRONT AND MIRRORED ABOVE. THERE ARE LAYERS EXHIBITING ITS RISE FROM THE GROUND MUCH LIKE IT CAME FROM THE EARTH. THERE IS SOIL AROUND THE ALTAR TO ALLOW THE EARTHY SCENT TO HIT ONE’S NOSTRILS AS TO FOSTER APPRECIATION FOR ITS CONNECTION TO THE EARTH. THERE IS AN UNEVEN ROTATION OF THE ALTAR TO DIRECT GAZES INTO THE DIRECTION OF ITS POINT. THIS DIRECTION POINTS TOWARD THE KAABA FOR MUSLIMS AS THE 1 FOOT INDENT IN THE ALTAR ACTS AS A PLACE OF PRAYER TO ALLAH.

THE BRASS ACCENTS GLISTEN IN THE DISTANCE TO STEAL GAZES AS TO SUMMON PEOPLE CLOSER. THIS IS A PLACE TO GATHER AS THERE ARE SEATS SURROUNDING A FIRE PIT. THE SHEET OF BRASS COVERING TRIANGULAR COLUMNS IS SMOOTH AND COLD TO THE TOUCH. INNER CONCRETE WITHIN THE COLUMNS IS ROUGH AND WARM COMPARED TO THE GOLD-LIKE METAL MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY. WITHIN THESE COLUMNS ARE INDENTS THAT HOLD CUSHIONS FOR SEATING. HOWEVER, ONE COLUMN HAS AN INDENT THAT IS DIFFERENT AS IT HOLDS A SINGULAR CANDLE. THE CANDLE CAN BE TAKEN TO THE FIRE TO LIGHT, ULTIMATELY BEING PLACED BACK IN ITS RIGHTFUL SPOT. IT IS ENCOURAGED TO SIT AND TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES TO FEEL THE WARMTH OF THE FIRE AND STONE SURROUNDING THE PIT.
THIS INTERFAITH SPACE IS LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA. A SPACE TO ALLOW ANY OF THE THREE ABRAHAMIC RELIGIONS TO WORSHIP TOGETHER IS NEEDED. THERE MUST BE CONTEMPLATIVE SPACES ALONG THE WAY TO THE GATHERING SPACE TO ALLOW FOLLOWERS TO PREPARE THEMSELVES FOR THE ULTIMATE GATHERING SPOT. OVERT RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS ARE NOT PERMITTED. AT LEAST 60 PEOPLE MUST BE ABLE TO FIT IN THE GATHERING SPOT.
THE GLASS MARKER IN THE DIRECTION OF KAABA HOLDS GREENERY TO BRING NATURE CLOSER TO USERS. IT CAN ALSO BE USED AS A WAY TO SEPARATE SPACE FOR INTERMINGLING PRAYER AMONG SEXES AS TO ALLOW BOTH SEXES TO OCCUPY THE SAME SPACE TOGETHER AND APPROPRIATELY. LAWS OF REFLECTION ARE IN PLAY AS LIGHT IS REFLECTED INTO THE SPACE FROM OUTDOOR MIRRORS PLACED STRATEGICALLY.

THIS IS A PROJECT FROM JUNIOR YEAR DURING ARCH 3050.
THIS INTERFAITH SPACE USES LIGHT AND WATER TO LEAD ONE THROUGH CONTEMPLATIVE SPACES BEFORE FINALLY ENTERING THE GATHERING SPACE. THE ENTRANCE IS MADE OF BRICK TO REFERENCE THE ORIGINAL BRICK ROADS NOW COVERED IN ASPHALT. THE SOUND AND SIGHT OF WATER FLOWING ALONG THE WALLS GUIDES USERS THROUGH THE WALKWAY. THE PAVED CONCRETE IN THE SHAPE OF TWO HALF CIRCLES BROKEN APART HAVE STEPPED CURVED WALLS THAT HAVE PANELS WITH SHATTERED GLASS TO INCORPORATE THE LAWS OF RELFECTION. THE LAWS OF REFLECTION ARE USED TO REFLECT SUN RAYS INTO THE WALKWAY TO SHOW DIFFERENT DESIGNS OF LIGHT TO FURTHER LEAD THE USER ON THEIR JOURNEY. THE FIRST SET OF CONTEMPLATIVE SPACES ALLOWS FOR ONE TO OCCUPY AND TAKE IN THE SURROUNDINGS. THE OTHER SET CANNOT BE OCCUPIED AS THERE IS WARPED GLASS THAT IS FENCED OFF. ONE IS ENCOURAGED TO ANALYZE THE FEATURES OF GLASS WHEN IT GLISTENS. UPON ENTERING THE STRUCTURE, ONE WILL SEE RESTROOM DOORS THAT LEAD TO A SINK AND ABLUTION FOUNTAIN IN EACH ONE. THESE FEATURES ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE WALLS. ENTERING THE GATHERING SPACE ALLOWS ONE TO FEEL THE WHOLENESS OF A CIRCLE THAT REFERENCES THE HALF CIRCLES FROM THE WALKWAY. THIS SIGNIFIES HOW ONE IS NOT WHOLE BEFORE ENTERING AS THEY HAVE NOT STRENGTHENED THEIR CONNECTION WITH THEIR GOD YET.
THIS PROJECT IS LOCATED IN BELINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA. IT IS TO EMBRACE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN PRINCIPLES AND FACILITATE IMPROVING THE HEALTH, KNOWLEDGE AND COMFORT OF MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WHILE CONSIDERING THE CITY’S CONTEXT, HISTORY, AND FUTURE. IT WILL SERVE AS A HUB FOR PERSONAL AND COMMUNITY WELLBEING AS A PUBLIC AMENITY.
THIS WELLNESS CENTER MUST ENGAGE THE ENTIRE SITE WHILE SHOWING HOW IT CAN BE SHAPED TO EMBRACE THE BUILDING MAKING IT PART OF A LARGER URBAN AND CULTURAL FABRIC. IT WILL CONTAIN FACILITIES FOR NOURISHMENT, COMMUNITY GATHERING, INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PHYSICAL FITNESS, RESTROOM AND LOCKER ROOM SPACE, AND OTHER SUPPORT SPACES.

THE BUILDING WILL BE ADA COMPLIANT WHILE ADA-RELATED DESIGNS WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE ARCHITECTURE. IT WILL HOLD AT LEAST 200 OCCUPANTS.

THIS COMMUNITY HUB FOSTERS A DYNAMIC INTERPLAY BETWEEN CURVED AND RECTILINEAR FORMS, WHERE THE FLUIDITY OF THE CURVED ELEMENTS CREATES INVITING GATHERING SPACES, WHILE THE RECTILINEAR COMPONENTS FUNCTION AS “CONSTANTS” THAT HELP DELINEATE THESE AREAS. THE DESIGN INCORPORATES CIRCULAR SPACES THAT ENCOURAGE USERS TO PAUSE AND ENGAGE. FOR EXAMPLE, INTEGRATED SEATING AT THE INTERSECTION OF HALLWAYS OFFERS A COMFORTABLE SPOT FOR RELAXATION, DINING, CONVERSATION, AND MORE. CURVED LIGHT PANELS FURTHER INVITE INDIVIDUALS TO SETTLE IN AND ENJOY THE VIEW. THE PLAY AREA HAS CURVED WINDOWS TO OPTIMIZE NATURAL LIGHTING FOR CHILDREN TO READ, PLAY, OR CONVERSE WITH PEERS. IT WILL ALSO BE A RETREAT FOR KIDS WHO MISS THEIR PARENTS AS IT OFFERS A SENSE OF SECURITY AND WARMTH. LARGE HALLWAYS PROVIDE SMOOTH CIRCULATION BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS. EXTERNALLY, SHORTER ROOMS ARE DELINEATED BY CURVED ROOFS. DARK COLORED ROOFING HAS SOLAR PANELS AS TO MAKE IT EASIER TO NOT ONLY REPLACE PANELS IF NECESSARY, BUT ALSO THE ROOFING ITSELF. THE PAVILLION’S CIRCULAR FORMS CREATE A DISTINCTIVE ROOF THAT CAPTURES RAINWATER AND SERVES AS A COMMUNAL SPACE. THERE IS SEAMLESS INTEGRATION BETWEEN THE PAVILLION AND ITS SEATING. ADDITIONALLY, THE ACCESSIBLE RAMPS AND STAIRS ARE INTEGRATED THOUGHTFULLY INTO THE FOUNDATION.
