Year-Round Appeal While thousands of people visit the Kennebunks in the summer, the region has something going on all year long. Autumn: Veteran leaf-peepers know there’s no better place to be in all the world than New England in the fall. Sunshine is bounteous and the days are still pleasant, but the views – oh the views! Imagine the flamecolored leaves – gold, scarlet and burnt orange – against the blue of the sky or ocean and you’ll get the idea. The fall is also a great time to do some antique hunting, check out local fairs, yard sales and farmers markets and, of course, take a walk on the (far less crowded) beach. Winter: Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice skating – these are just a few reasons to visit our region in the wintertime. Need a few more? How about cozy inns, restaurants serving up everything from comfort foods to haute cuisine, and plenty of pre-holiday shopping? Of course no discussion of winter in the Kennebunks would be complete without mentioning

the Kennebunkport Business Association’s Christmas Prelude. Now in its 34th year, Prelude features two weeks of magical holiday events. Check out www.christmasprelude. com for more information. Spring: The flowers are bursting out, the temps are warming up and the beaches are nearly empty – spring in the Kennebunks has great appeal for those seeking a quieter visit. Farmers markets are just setting up and offering the season’s freshest produce and treats, while garden centers are filled to the brim with plants and flowers. Summer: What can we say? People the world over travel to our region in the summer, whether it’s to spend some quality beach time, take in our history or maybe just a little shopping and dining out. You can go whale watching by day, eat a lobster on an outdoor deck by night, or simply pack a picnic and spend the entire day on the beach. Take in a play at the Ogunquit Playhouse or Arundel Barn Playhouse, or visit one of the area’s many historical offerings.

Walker’s Point

Robert Dennis photos

The most common question we get at the Chamber is, “How do I get to Walker’s Point?” The summer home of President George H.W. Bush and wife Barbara, Walker’s Point has been visited by presidents, foreign heads of state and celebrities alike over the years. More importantly, though, it has been a haven for generations of Bush family members, who have enjoyed idyllic summer days away from the pressures of the outside world. Walker’s Point is not open to the public, but you can drive by, or stop briefly at the scenic parking overlook to snap a quick picture. Vehicles may only stop in the designated parking area; stopping on the road is not permitted. To get to Walker’s Point, take 10 | gokennebunks.com

Ocean Avenue from Dock Square, approximately two miles. The ride is beautiful in and of itself, with the Atlantic crashing against the rocks along the right side of the road. Just before you reach Walker’s Point you’ll see the special overlook spot (please obey the rules posted on the sign) on the right. Also overlooking the house and on the right is the Anchor to Windward, the town’s special tribute to “41” installed in 2009.

Local Beaches

Gooch’s Beach, Kennebunk

Laura Snyder Smith photo

Maine has more than 5,000 miles of coastline and some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire state can be found here in the Kennebunks. Whether you’re a family looking to set up for that perfectly relaxing day at the beach or a surfer hoping to catch the ultimate wave, the beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport offer some of the best fun in the sun.

Kennebunk Beach: Mother’s, Middle & Gooch’s

Beach Avenue, off routes 9 & 35 These long, wide sandy beaches (and even rocky Middle Beach) are the perfect place to walk, sun yourself, play in the surf, look for sea treasures or just enjoy the sight of the waves rolling into shore. There’s no better place to be on July 4th, when fireworks explode overhead in a myriad of glittering lights. There are lifeguards and porta-potties at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach from July through Labor Day. Mother’s Beach has a playground open to the public. 12 | gokennebunks.com

Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport

While visitors are welcome at these beaches, a permit to park at the beach is required. Daily, weekly and seasonal passes are easily available at new parking kiosks and at the Kennebunk Town Hall. For more information and prices, call the Kennebunk Town Hall at (207) 985-2102.

Goose Rocks Beach

King’s Highway, off Route 9, north of Cape Porpoise At three miles long, Goose Rocks Beach is a favorite with walkers as well as the sand pail set. It’s wide, smooth and sandy, and affords wonderful views of Eastern Goose Rocks and Timber Island, just off the coast. Parking permits are required (note that Kennebunk permits cannot be used here) and are available at the Kennebunkport Police station, Town Hall, the Goose Rocks General Store and some accommodations. For information and prices, call the Kennebunkport Police station at (207) 967-2454.

Colony Beach

Off Ocean Avenue, near the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport This beach (also known as Arundel Beach) is much appreciated by those who love to scramble on its rocks and watch the surf dash the shore. No permit is needed. Kennebunk • Kennebunkport • Arundel Chamber of Commerce | 13

Life on the Water The Kennebunks share a common seagoing heritage, and that love of life on the water continues today. While fishermen make daily use of the region’s piers, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the beautiful rivers and ocean in the area. Options include deep sea fishing tours, kayak and boat rentals, whale watching trips, lobster cruises, schooner rides and more. If surfing is more your speed, Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk is a popular spot, and surf and paddleboard rentals (not to mention wetsuits – Maine water can be chilly!) can be found nearby.

The Food Scene The Maine Lobster Council will tell you that the world’s best lobster comes from Maine. But it’s even better to enjoy that lobster when you’re eating it in Maine. Visiting the Kennebunks, you’ll have the opportunity to do just that, whether you enjoy it at a seaside lobster bake or in one of the area’s lobster pounds, casual eateries or fine restaurants. You can have your lobster any way you like it, in a roll, as part of a pasta dish or in fajitas, or in any of dozens of different preparations, or simply with a little drawn butter on the side. And if lobster isn’t your thing, or you’ve simply eaten your fill, the region boasts numerous different cuisines including New American, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Mexican and French. It also features dining establishments dedicated to the farm-to-fork movement, continental cuisine and pub fare. In fact, the Kennebunks boast dining

options of all kinds, from a take-out stand to a AAA Five-Diamond Awardwinning restaurant, and everything in between. For a list of local restaurants and eateries, plus our new food blog, check out the chamber’s website, www.gokennebunks.com.

MY Maine MEMORIES

The water up here is clear. And cold. Wicked cold. I know because even after 23 summers I am still the worst canoeist in Maine. Tipped myself into that coldest, clearest water a dozen or more times. Kids seem to think it’s a tradition. Guess it is now, along with starry nights, hammock naps and walks along the Eastern Trail. I fully intend to conquer this canoe thing now that we’ve made our home at CAPE ARUNDEL COTTAGE PRESERVE.

Eight-month, two-bedroom cottages starting in the low $200s. Details at capearundelcottages.com info@capearundelcottages.com I 207.451.0218

It’s a Dog’s Life

Robert Dennis photo

In Maine, we love our dogs and more and more establishments welcome them. There are dog-friendly inns and eateries, dog parks and, of course, opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches with your four-legged friends.

KENNEBUNK • A fenced-in dog park is available on Sea Road, next to the recycling center, in Kennebunk. It is free and open to the public year-round.

KENNEBUNKPORT • At Goose Rocks Beach, dogs are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from June 15 to Sept. 15. They are allowed on the beach all day the rest of the year. Leash and pick-up laws apply.

• Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up after their pets.

ARUNDEL • Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up after their pets.

• In Kennebunk, dogs are allowed on the beaches all day from Labor Day to June 15, and before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. from June 15 to Labor Day. Owners must pick up after their dogs, and have their dogs under voice control at all times.

Scenic coastal views, rural back roads and friendly motorists make cycling in the Kennebunks a must do activity. The area is relatively flat and points of interest are easily accessible by bicycle. Whether you bring your own bike or rent one from one of the local bike shops, take some time out to relax on a bike. Here are some beautiful rides, sure to please beginners and expert bike riders alike.

Ocean Avenue and Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport (8 Miles): Definitely bring your camera on this ride. Head out of Dock Square on Ocean Avenue with the water on your right. Ocean Avenue is heavily traveled so families with young children may want to take another route. You will be riding parallel to the Kennebunk River. Bear right at the Wildes District Fire Station and stay on Wildes District road all the way into Cape Porpoise. When you have had enough lobster, hop on your

bike and backtrack your route back into town. Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport (11 Miles): From Dock Square take North Street to Arundel Road. Follow Arundel Road past the horse farm and take a right on to Goose Rocks Road. Ride Goose Rocks Road to the end and go straight across Route 9. At the end of the Dyke Road you will find the pristine Goose Rocks Beach. This ideal family destination usually has very limited parking, but you won’t have that problem with a bike. This also happens to be the ride with the least amount of traffic. When it’s time to return follow the same roads back to town. Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunk (7 Miles): From Dock Square go up the hill to the traffic light and take a left onto Beach Avenue. After a couple minutes you will see the Monastery. Please walk your bike when you enter, as bike riding is not

Hit the Trail allowed in the Monastery grounds. Continue down toward the beach by taking a left out of the Monastery back onto Beach Avenue. Kennebunk beach is now straight ahead about 1 mile. Follow the ocean for the next 2 miles. Where the road heads away from the ocean you will see Great Hill Road on the left. This dead end road borders the Mousam River. After you turn around take a left on to Boothby Road. This connects to Route 9 and will bring you back into the Port. This ride is good for adults and parents with children over about 9 years old. Bridal Path, Kennebunk: Flat dirt path about two miles long that parallels the Mousam River in Kennebunk. This is an excellent ride for beginners and families. Park at Sea Road School on Sea Road for access. Wonderbrook Park, Kennebunk Muddy, hilly, technical loops of interconnected trails. They are short but fun and include some bridge and log crossings. This is best combined with a road ride because of the short distance. Located at 16 Plummer Lane, off Summer Street. Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Gravelly Brook Road: Trails vary in length, width, topography and use. Some are conducive to bird watching and viewing wildlife, others for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. For more information on this site as well as other Trust properties, see www.kporttrust.org.

Eastern Trail: The Eastern Trail, a 65-mile section of the East Coast Greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland, has entrances in both Kennebunk (at Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road) and Arundel (on Limerick Road). The trail is perfect for walking and cycling as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The trail, which is approximately 10 feet wide, is also dog-friendly. For more information, as well as a map and trail rules, please see www.easterntrail.org. Â Kennebunk Land Trust: The Kennebunk Land Trust also offers scenic spots for walking, hiking and riding. Getting Married

The Homestead photo

What could be a more perfect backdrop for your wedding than the beautiful beaches and deep blue water of the Kennebunks? How about a stone church perched above crashing waves? Or an antique farmhouse overlooking the marsh? Or a turn-of-the-century resort with a rolling green lawn? All of these venues – and more – are available for those looking to exchange vows in Maine. In the last decade, the Kennebunks have become one of the country’s premier destination wedding locations, primarily because of the local beauty, but also because of the many activities your wedding party and guests can enjoy here. It has boomed in popularity, particularly with out-of-state couples, since Maine voters approved a same-sex marriage law in 2012.

Local History Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk William Lord was born at Kennebunk Landing in 1799, the third son of Tobias Lord and Hephzibah Conant Lord. As a merchant and ship owner, Lord became one of Kennebunk’s most important patriarchs and citizens. In 1820 he married Sarah Cleaves of Biddeford, and they lived in what was then the Jonas Clark house at 20 Summer St. It sits high on the hill and is now known as the William Lord Mansion, a private residence. It was here that Lord and his wife raised their family of 10 children. In 1825, William Lord began construction on a dry goods store on Main Street in Kennebunk — the very building that is today the focal point of the Brick Store Museum. Initially known as Lord’s Store, it was unusual for its time by being constructed of locally-kilned brick, a far more expensive alternative than constructing from plentiful Maine timber. Although the brick exterior of the building remains relatively unchanged from

the 19th century, the interior has been altered significantly. At the time of William Lord’s death in 1873, he was considered among the wealthiest men in Kennebunk. Lord’s greatgranddaughter, Edith Cleaves Barry, eventually inherited the building and founded the museum on the second floor in 1936. She quickly overtook three other buildings on the block, and linked these historic structures inside. These buildings date from 1810 to 1860. The initial core of the museum’s collections came from the Lords and related families, but the museum today is a regional history, art, and archives center. The Archives Center is open for research when an archivist is present. The Brick Store Museum is open year round. Admission is by suggested donation, $5 per person. For museum information, call (207) 985-4802. — Brick Store Museum

Local History

Robert Dennis photo

The Wedding Cake House, Kennebunk When James Hunt Barker first saw the Wedding Cake House, he was a young man just back from the Korean War. It was 1954, and Barker, a Kentucky native, had traveled to spend a week that August with artist Channing Hare. At a cocktail party given by Hare and attended by film actress Claudette Colbert, the artist talked about a house he had been trying to buy for five years. So the next day, Hare brought Colbert and Barker to that house.

Located in Kennebunk on the stately Summer Street, the building of the house started in 1815 and lasted 10 years. At that time, it was given to George Washington Bourne by his parents, as a wedding present. And it would come to be known as the Wedding Cake House. While Hare would never own the home, nearly 45 years later Barker bought it, and has it owned it ever since, becoming only the second owner not to be a part of the original Bourne family.

Museum in the Streets At 25 sites around town there are signs that identify the location and cite its historical significance. For more information, see www.themuseuminthestreets.com. 70 | gokennebunks.com

Local History White Columns Kennebunkport The First Families Kennebunkport Museum, at White Columns in the heart of Kennebunkport, offers visitors a chance to tour an 1853 Greek Revival home and view exhibitions covering two centuries of local history, from sea captains to presidents. Guided tours present stories and artifacts from the lives of Charles and Celia Perkins, whose fortunes were connected to the thriving shipbuilding era of Kennebunkport. The museum also features sea captains and shipbuilders to rusticators to Kennebunkport’s most famous summer resident, former President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush and their family. There is also a Museum Store with a selection of maritime history collectibles, presidential memorabilia, and unique Kennebunkport treasures. — Kennebunkport Historical Society

Arundel history In the mid-1600s, Arundel’s first settlers kept close to the coastline both for easy access to the ocean and to escape from the local Native Americans. The settlers finally abandoned the settlement in the late 1600s and did not return until around 1720 when relations with the Native Americans improved. The new settlement, named Arundel, grew along the Kennebunk River. After 1750, people began to settle west of what is now Route 1 and started farming the rest of Arundel. Around 1800, as the religious climate changed, small churches and meeting houses served to draw the local people together. Although those small churches have disappeared, several of the early farms and a few of the farmhouses still exist today. When Arundel’s secession from Kennebunkport became official in 1916, it lost its direct connection with the coast and remained a rural town composed primarily of farms. Today, Arundel is one of the fastestgrowing towns in the state, and is home to both industry and local businesses, while maintaining much of its rural character. — Arundel Historical Society
