THE CHAMBER KENNEBUNKPORT KENNEBUNK ARUNDEL
From surviving to thriving Local dining scene has adapted to changing times

A lot can change in two years. Almost all of our eateries have cool new outdoor spaces, from decks to patios. Take-out is hot. Being demanding or demeaning toward staff is not (not that it ever was OK). Food prices are up. Staff numbers are down. In the restaurant world, it seems the only constant is change. This year, a few restaurants have changed hands. Chef Rebecca Charles’ Pearl was sold and will now be the second location for Via Sophia, an Italian bistro out of D.C. The Kennebunk Inn changed hands, as chef owners Shanna and Brian O’Hea departed for New York, and dining spot Academe became The Tavern. New chefs have taken the helm at the White Barn Inn and Stripers.
And coming soon to Route 1 south in Kennebunk will be a brand new barbecue restaurant, Smoke, where Herb’s used to be. As of this writing, Holy Donuts is still working on their Arundel location, and there are rumors of a new bagel shop coming to town. Two years after the pandemic started, the dining scene in the Kennebunks has not only survived, but thrived. We hope you’ll find that out for yourself during Eat the Kennebunks Week, May 9-15 this year, when many eateries offer special, discounted meals they hope will entice you back for another try. If it’s been a while since you’ve eaten out, you couldn’t pick a better time to venture forth and try something new. For not only are our local restaurant owners and chefs resilient, they’re creative, too, and excited to get a more “normal” season started with fresh ingredients, fresh eyes and fresh hope for better days ahead. So eat out, eat in, eat well, eat local. Let the 2022 dining season begin.

Creative dining Restaurants continue to adapt during ongoing pandemic

By Laura Dolce Executive Director
If the last two-plus years have taught us anything about our local businesses, it’s that they are adaptable. And no sector more so than our eateries. As the pandemic first rolled in, eateries responded by offering expanded takeout and many offered curbside pick-up. Alcohol was added to the takeout offerings, and soon you could order a bottle of wine or a craft cocktail with your meal.

expand seating while offering a safe space for diners. Others turned those outdoor spaces into permanent structures that now attract guests in their own right, for the cool atmosphere and attractive setting. The Lost Fire’s Luca – part outdoor restaurant, part hip gathering spot – is a great example. Decks, patios and even dining cabanas sprouted seemingly overnight, but soon became a favorite part of the local dining landscape.
As the weather got better, tents popped up around the Kennebunks, And the outdoor options didn’t end with cooler temperatures. Stripers’ as enterprising eateries sought to
options may be here to stay igloos and Batson River’s fish shacks were a hit. And the Kennebunkport Resort Collection – the trailblazers in this trend – offered a rotating set of gondolas, igloos and gingerbread houses at both the Kennebunkport Inn/Burleigh and the Boathouse. Those outdoor spaces and options are here to stay, it seems, along with expanded takeout at some restaurants. While some of the changes were made due to Covid, the creativity which many embraced remains as we enter this third year of changed life. There’s a new social responsibility and community-mindedness. You’ll find
this at Mornings in Paris, with their community coffee brand benefiting Community Outreach services, and at Boulangerie, where bread purchases supported the same organization. This winter, Alisson’s offered weekly dinners benefitting a variety of nonprofits, from the local American Legion to ice skating for kids and public assistance. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg in a community known for giving back. Another trend we’ve loved to see is the offering of comfort foods during a time we could all use a little comfort. Opened in 2020 in response to Covid restrictions,

Culinary comings, goings, growings The culinary scene in the Kennebunks bid farewell to Kennebunk Inn chef/ owners Shanna and Brian O’Hea at the end of 2021, as the dynamic duo sold the inn and headed back to New York. There Brian will teach at the renowned Culinary Institute of America, where he and Shanna first met. For those of you craving Shanna’s lobster pot pie, she promises it will return to Gold Belly, the online food purveyor/shipper, once she finds a commercial kitchen to work in. Stay tuned …
Steve Kingston of The Clam Shack

The Kennebunks said goodbye to Pearl last year. Chef owner Rebecca Charles, known for making the lobster roll famous in Manhattan, sold the restaurant to local entrepreneur Tim Harrington. It
will open this spring as a new Italian eatery, Via Sophia by the Sea. In the meantime, if you’re craving one of Charles’ buttery delicious lobster rolls, you’ll have to head to NYC. Of course, in the Kennebunks, lobster is still king, and while you’ll find it on nearly every menu, The Clam Shack’s Steve Kingston still wears the crown. We’re used to seeing huge lines stretching down Western Avenue while people wait patiently to taste the Shack’s worldfamous rolls, and it seems the line ONLINE may be just as long. Kingston’s crew, we hear, has been kept busy packing up his lobster roll kits (available with or without chowder), available (and in demand, it seems) on Gold Belly.
