A week just isn’t enough Food has brought us together for thousands of years, whether it was cave people cooking over an open fire or farming communities celebrating the harvest or families gathered for the ritual of dinner together each night.

celebrate our culinary scene. This year, though, I’m not doing that. First, as I write this, I don’t know when we will return to normal. And second, one week just isn’t enough.
Food has featured prominently in the highlight reels of our lives: birthday cakes, hot dogs at ballgames, holiday meals with the family, barbecues on the Fourth of July, the season’s first cone from the ice cream truck, turkey and stuffing for Thanksgiving.
Now more than ever before our restaurants and other eateries need our support. So I’d like to declare this EAT THE KENNEBUNKS YEAR, and encourage you to do a few things:
As we all discovered this year, access to that food — whether having dinner out at our favorite restaurants, grabbing coffee and a pastry from “our” place or picking up whatever’s fresh from a grocery on the way home — is something we can’t take for granted. And yet, when the world turned dark, it was many of those same eateries that kept us tethered to our “old” lives, as food workers switched from eat-in to takeout and delivery.
• Eat out. Grab a meal at your favorite spot or try a new one. This will help owners keep the doors open and employees paid. • Tip well! Servers have been struggling with reduced income. Show them you appreciate all they do. • Buy gift certificates. This will give eateries a boost now, and you or your recipient can enjoy a great meal later.
While they kept us fed, so many of them were hurting, having to lay off employees, limit their menus or close their doors altogether.

From the simplest lobster shack to the most acclaimed fine dining, we’ve got everything to please even the pickiest of palates.
And lobster – well, there we’ve got just about everyone beat. Do you like yours steamed, served with an ear of corn and a cup of butter? You’ll find it here.
Maine lobster, of course, is served every which way in the Kennebunks.

pages 9-14). Or over French fries and smothered in creamy lobster bisque – yup, as poutine? We’ve got it here.
In pasta, on pizza, in omelettes and tacos, you’ll find lobster in just about everything – and all of it fresh from the sea.
But while lobster may be king here, we have plenty of other dining options, too, from Asian to Mexican, and all cuisines in between, in settings from humble to high-falutin’, if that’s what you’re looking for. In the past decade or so, many restaurants in the Kennebunks have

really upped their game. Focusing on the local seasons, many have turned to using sustainable seafood, embraced the farm to fork movement by sourcing produce and meat from local purveyors, and begun growing their own herbs and vegetables. The cuisine here has moved beyond chowder and chips (though we still love both!) as chefs find ways to put new twists on old comfort food standbys (an elegant puff pastrytopped lobster pot pie, for example) and to use cutting-edge culinary techniques to highlight Maine’s bounty. Eateries in the Kennebunks are also paying more attention to the beers,
wine and cocktails they serve, with a huge variety of beers on tap, carefully curated wines and stunning handcrafted cocktails (you’ll find our Cocktail Trail of the Kennebunks on pages 20-21). More distilleries are popping up, too. They, along with beer and mead tasting, make up our Tasting Trail of the Kennebunks, found on page 34.
