This year’s Go Kennebunks is dedicated to the loving memory of Barbara and George H.W. Bush. For many years, those of us at the Chamber have answered one question more than any other: How do I get to Walker’s Point? The Bush family compound, it was home for half of the year to President and Mrs. Bush, and a gathering spot for generations of their family. When we lost both Mrs. and President Bush in 2018, we didn’t know if that question would stop being asked. It hasn’t. It’s a testament to both Mrs. Bush and 41, as he was known, that the love they had for this community – and the love this community had for them – has endured. History was made here, with visiting heads of state making the trip to Kennebunkport to talk over world issues, first with 41, and then with his son and 43rd president, George W. Bush. And, of course, who could forget 41 celebrating his 85th and 90th birthdays by jumping out of

a plane, landing to kisses from Barbara at St. Ann’s Church along Ocean Avenue. It was an indelible image broadcast around the country. While the Bushes may have brought the world to our doorstep, it was the peace and sense of place that brought them to the Kennebunks for generations. Mrs. Bush and 41, particularly, seemed to revel in their quieter life here, whether it was zipping up and down the Kennebunk River for him, or strolling with her beloved dogs on Gooch’s Beach for her. Their loss has been deeply felt by their many friends and fans in our community. But we know that their legacy will live on in the community they loved in An Anchor to Windward, Ganny’s Garden and Walker’s Point, where their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren still gather today. So while President and Mrs. Bush may be gone, they will never be forgotten by this community they loved so well. — Laura Dolce, Executive Director

Walker’s Point

The summer home of the late President George H.W. Bush and Barbara, Walker’s Point has been visited by presidents, foreign heads of state and celebrities alike over the years. More importantly, though, it has been a haven for generations of Bush family members, who have enjoyed idyllic summer days away from the pressures of the outside world. Walker’s Point is not open to the public, but you can drive by or stop briefly at the scenic parking overlook to snap a quick picture. Vehicles may only stop in the designated parking area; stopping on the road is not permitted. To get to Walker’s Point, take Ocean

Avenue from Dock Square for approximately two miles. The ride is beautiful in and of itself, with the Atlantic crashing against the rocks along the right side of the road. Just before you reach Walker’s Point you’ll see the special overlook spot (please obey the rules posted on the sign) on the right. Also overlooking the house and on the right is the Anchor to Windward, the town’s special tribute to “41” installed in 2009.

Named one of the “Top 10 Maine Summer Events of 2016” by Yankee Magazine in its first year, LAUNCH! A Maritime Festival is getting bigger and better in 2019. We are adding new events, such as Rock the Dock and Harbor High 5 and expanding others, such as the Pirate Pub Crawl. And the Kennebunkport Brewing Co., part of Shipyard Brewing Co., will return with their exclusive LAUNCH! beer, available on tap at Federal Jack’s and in growlers at KBC Shipyard Store. Fresh local seafood, nautical history and an array of activities at locations throughout Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and 10 | gokennebunks.com

Arundel will highlight our community’s rich maritime history. Events include a Castaway Cove for Kids with buoy decorating, touch tanks and bouncy houses; the Sailors & Sirens 5K, a fun beachside run complete with nautical costumes and live mermaids; a “Chopped”-style chef competition featuring a whoopie pie cookoff in downtown Kennebunk; an authentic Lobster Bake with red-and-white checked tablecloths at the Pilot House, overlooking the water; and a VIP “Rock the Dock” adults-only after-party. can also enjoy historic walking tours with costumed interpreters from the Brick Store Museum and White Columns, tours, tastings and more. The highlight of the weekend is the River Lights Boat Parade on Saturday night, where boats bedecked in lights carrying costumed passengers and accompanied by fun music make their way down the Kennebunk River after dark, as hundreds of spectators cheer from shore. On Sunday morning, the festival will conclude with a traditional Blessing of the Fleet in Cape Porpoise village, wishing

captains and crew a safe and bountiful season. It will be an “all hands on deck” weekend with area hotels featuring nauticallythemed packages, restaurants preparing their finest seafood delights and themed cocktails, and local shops showcasing unique and creative crafts and gifts. Local Beaches

With abundant sand and surf, Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk is a popular spot on a summer day.

Maine has more than 5,000 miles of coastline, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire state can be found here in the Kennebunks. Whether you’re a family looking to set up for that perfectly relaxing day at the beach or a surfer hoping to catch the ultimate wave, the beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport offer some of the best fun in the sun. Kennebunk Beach: Mother’s, Middle & Gooch’s (Beach Avenue) These long, wide sandy beaches (and even rocky Middle Beach) are the perfect place to walk, sun yourself, play in the surf, look for sea treasures or just enjoy the sight of the waves rolling onto shore. There’s no better place to be on July 4, when fireworks explode overhead in a myriad of glittering lights. There are lifeguards and porta-potties at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach from July through Labor Day. Mother’s Beach has a playground open to the public. While visitors are welcome at these beaches, a permit to park at the beach is required. Non-resident daily ($25), weekly ($100) and seasonal ($200) passes are easily available at the three parking kiosks and at the Kennebunk Town Hall. Goose Rocks Beach (King’s Highway, off Route 9, north of Cape Porpoise) At three miles long, Goose Rocks Beach is a favorite with walkers as well as the sand pail set. The beach is wide, smooth, sandy and affords wonderful views of Eastern Goose Rocks and Timber Island, just off the coast. Parking permits are required ($25/$100/$200; note that Kennebunk permits cannot be used here) and are available at the Kennebunkport Police Station, Town Hall and the Goose Rocks General Store. Colony Beach (off Ocean Avenue, near the Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport) This beach (also known as Arundel Beach) is much appreciated by those who love to scramble on its rocks and watch the surf dash the shore. No parking permit is needed. Beach Wheelchairs Thanks to fundraising and generous donors, the Kennebunks now have two new beach wheelchairs for public use! Both are available to rent for a small fee through the towns’ recreation departments, Kennebunk Rec (207-604-1335) and Kennebunkport Parks & Recreation (207-967-4304). Biking / Hiking Scenic coastal views, rural back roads and friendly motorists make cycling in the Kennebunks a must-do activity. The area is relatively flat and points of interest are easily accessible by bicycle. Whether you bring your own bike or rent from one of the local bike shops, take some time out to relax. Here are some beautiful rides, sure to please beginners and expert riders alike.

This also happens to be the ride with the least amount of traffic. When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to return, follow the same roads back to town.

Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunk (7 miles): From Dock Square go over the bridge to the traffic light and take a left Ocean Avenue and Cape onto Beach Avenue. Ride Goose Rocks Kennebunk Road to the end and go straight across Pass through the stone gate of the Route 9. Biking / Hiking gracious English park with its sweeping lawns, simple gardens, the magnificent Our Lady of Lourdes grotto, and other statues and shrines. Bike riding is not allowed on the Monastery grounds. On foot, follow the paved path into the woods to see more statues and views of Kennebunkport across the Kennebunk River. Thousands come to enjoy these peaceful and expansive grounds every year. Open between sunrise and sunset, everybody is welcome to visit the chapel, to walk the grounds, or to sit in contemplation or prayer on one of the many benches on the grounds. Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Gravelly Brook Road: Trails vary in length, width, topography and use. Some are conducive to bird watching and viewing wildlife, others for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. kport trust.org. Eastern Trail: The Eastern Trail, a 65-mile section of the East Coast Greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland, has entrances in both Kennebunk (at Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road) and Arundel (on Limerick Road). The trail is perfect for walking and cycling as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

The trail, which is approximately 10 feet wide, is also dog-friendly. easterntrail.org. Kennebunk Land Trust: The Kennebunk Land Trust offers scenic spots for walking, hiking and riding. kennebunklandtrust.org. Wonderbrook Park, Kennebunk Muddy, hilly, technical loops of interconnected trails. They are short but fun and include some bridge and log crossings. This is best combined with a road ride because of the short distance. Located at 16 Plummer Lane, off Summer Street. Trails of Hope Woods Located behind Hope Cemetery in Downtown Kennebunk near the junction of Summer Street and Main Street. Enjoy about 2 miles of well-marked trails through open and wooded areas and alongside Scotchman’s Brook. Hope Woods is well known for its many bird species. Access the trails through Hope Cemetery (Barnard Lane), at Fletcher Street (across from Mechanic Street), Wood Pond Lane (in cul de sac), or Woodhaven Drive (near intersection with Longwood). hopecemetery kennebunk.com/woods.

Year-Round Appeal While thousands of people visit the Kennebunks in the summer, the region has something going on all year long. Autumn: Veteran leaf-peepers know there’s no better place to be in all the world than New England in the fall. Sunshine is bounteous and the days are still pleasant, but the views, oh the views! Imagine the flame-colored leaves – gold, scarlet and burnt orange – against the blue of the sky or ocean and you’ll get the idea. The fall is also a great time to do some antique hunting, check out local fairs, yard sales and farmers markets and, of course, take a walk on the (less crowded) beach. Winter: Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating – these are just a few reasons to visit our region in the wintertime. Need a few more? How about cozy inns, restaurants serving up everything from comfort foods to haute cuisine, and plenty of pre-holiday shopping? And in February, we Paint the Town Red with a special Valentine’s theme and events. Spring: The flowers are bursting, the temps are warming up and the beaches are nearly empty – spring in the Kennebunks has great appeal for those seeking a quieter visit. Farmers markets are just setting up and offering the season’s Robert Dennis photos freshest produce and treats, while garden centers are filled to the brim with plants and flowers. Summer: What can we say? People travel from all over the world to our region in the summer, whether it’s to spend some quality beach time, take in our history or maybe just a little shopping and dining out. You can go whale watching by day, eat a lobster on an outdoor deck by night, or simply pack a picnic and spend the entire day on the beach. Take in a play at the Ogunquit Playhouse, catch some live music at Vinegar Hill, or visit one of the area’s many historical offerings.

Whale Watching

Did you know that Kennebunk is the only town in York County to still offer whale watching boat trips? And that the First Chance Whale Watch and New England Eco Adventures are the only whale watching boats operating between Portsmouth and Portland? Visitors are lucky to have the opportunity to travel offshore to the feeding grounds of finbacks, minkes, humpbacks and even the rare blue

whale or endangered right whale. Along the way, you might even see some dolphins at play, or other sea life as you take in vistas that have remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Life on the Water

The Kennebunks share a common seafaring heritage, and that love of life on the water continues today. While fishermen make daily use of the region’s piers, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the beautiful rivers and ocean in the area. Options include deep sea fishing tours, kayak and boat rentals, whale watching trips, lobster cruises, schooner rides and more. If surfing is more your speed, Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk is a popular spot, and surf and paddleboard rentals (not to mention wetsuits – Maine water can be chilly!) can be found nearby.

Drive along Beach Avenue from Cooper’s Corner and take in the Kennebunk beaches, Gooch’s, Middle and Mother’s. Feeling adventurous? Park (legally) and get out and sink your toes into the sand, or take a swing at the playground on Mother’s Beach. Then, dust off the sand, head back to the car and loop around in front of KBIA and drive back to Lower Village/Dock Square. (You can take in much the same sights – with narration! – on a 45-minute Intown Trolley tour.) Grab a lobster roll to go (every eatery makes one!) and a whoopie pie. Nothing says “taste of Maine” like those two. If you’re feeling adventurous, wash it down with a bottle of Moxie.

Better yet, do a tasting at Kennebunkport Brewing Co., the birthplace of Shipyard Ale, then wander next door to Honeymaker Meadworks for mead (think wine with honey) sampling. Steps away is Batson River Brewing & Distilling, and the new Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery.

Getting here Visitor parking Parking is available in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square area in the (paid) municipal lot behind Alisson’s Restaurant and in the (free) lot at the North Street Fire Station, a short walk from Dock Square. Paid parking is also available behind The Pilot House and Lower Village Marketplace. On-street parking is allowed as marked by signs. In Kennebunk, parking is allowed in the municipal lots next to the Kennebunk Inn. (See map, page 37) RVs are welcome at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, for a museum admission price of $35 per vehicle. No overnight parking is permitted. See parking map, Page 55 Tour bus parking Buses are welcome to park at the Seashore Trolley Museum, 195 Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport, as well as at the Franciscan Monastery, 28 Beach Ave., Kennebunk. In the Kennebunks, we love our dogs!

In Maine, we love our dogs, and many establishments welcome them. There are dog-friendly inns and eateries, dog parks and, of course, opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches with your four-legged friends. KENNEBUNKPORT • At Goose Rocks Beach, dogs are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from June 15 to Sept. 15. They are allowed on the beach all day the rest of the year. Leash and pick-up laws apply. ARUNDEL • Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up after their pets.

KENNEBUNK • In Kennebunk, dogs are allowed on the beaches all day from Labor Day to June 15, and before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. from June 15 to Labor Day. Owners must pick up after their dogs, and have their dogs under voice control at all times. • A fenced-in dog park is available on Sea Road, next to the recycling center, in Kennebunk. It is free and open to the public year-round. • Dogs are permitted on the Eastern Trail in Kennebunk, but must be kept on leash during certain sections. Owners must pick up after their pets.

Heading north up Main Street, past the beautiful Kennebunk Free Library on your left and the Brick Store Museum and Town Hall on your right, bear right onto Summer Street. There you’ll find the gracious sea captains’ homes of days gone by, as well as the most photographed home in Maine, The Wedding Cake House, on your left. Or you can head out to West Kennebunk, to walk or bike the Eastern Trail, stop for a bite to eat or drive through the countryside.

Lower Village

The Kennebunk River divides Kennebunk’s Lower Village, and Kennebunkport’s Dock Square.

In this vibrant section of Kennebunk called Lower Village, located just a stroll across the bridge from Dock Square, you can find shops offering everything from souvenirs to surf boards along with fabulous eateries specializing in cuisines from all over the globe. The heart of Kennebunkport, Dock Square is full of the bustle and energy that draws people to the Kennebunks. From here you can take a cruise, browse through dozens of unique shops and experience the world-class cuisine for which the region has become known. Park on the street (be sure to obey the posted rules), in the for-pay municipal lot behind Alisson’s, or at the free municipal lot on North Street next to the Village Fire Department, and spend hours strolling, shopping and dining. craft fairs galore. Just up Spring Street you’ll find the majestic White Columns, where in-season tours are offered that will give visitors a taste of life in the past. Around the corner on Maine Street, historic homes – several of them now inns – are worthy of a look as you stroll or drive past.

Cape Porpoise

Cape Porpoise Harbor is known for its local color.

Not far from the Bush compound at Walker’s Point, just along Route 9, you’ll find the lovely village of Cape Porpoise. This authentic fishing village remains active to this day, with many lobstermen bringing in their catch here. Just across from the pier you’ll see Goat Island Light, a Kennebunkport Conservation Trust property restored to its former glory.

History White Columns Kennebunkport The First Families Kennebunkport Museum, at White Columns in the heart of Kennebunkport, offers visitors a chance to tour an 1853 Greek Revival home and view exhibitions covering two centuries of local history, from sea captains to presidents. Guided tours present stories and artifacts from the lives of Charles and Celia Perkins, whose fortunes were connected to the thriving shipbuilding era of Kennebunkport. The museum also features sea captains and shipbuilders to rusticators to Kennebunkport’s most famous summer resident, late President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush and their family. There is also a Museum Store with a selection of maritime history collectibles, presidential memorabilia, and unique Kennebunkport treasures. — Kennebunkport Historical Society 112 | gokennebunks.com

Arundel history In the mid-1600s, Arundel’s first settlers kept close to the coastline both for easy access to the ocean and to escape from local Native Americans. The settlers finally abandoned the settlement in the late 1600s and did not return until around 1720 when relations with Native Americans improved. The new settlement, named Arundel, grew along the Kennebunk River. After 1750, people began to settle west of what is now Route 1 and started farming the rest of Arundel. Around 1800, as the religious climate changed, small churches and meeting houses served to draw the local people together. Although those small churches have disappeared, several of the early farms and a few of the farmhouses still exist today. When Arundel’s secession from Kennebunkport became official in 1916, it lost its direct connection with the coast and remained a rural town composed primarily of farms. Today, Arundel is one of the fastest-growing towns in the state, and is home to both industry and local businesses, while maintaining much of its rural character. — Arundel Historical Society

History Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk: In 1936, in the middle of the Great Depression, Edith Cleaves Barry opened the Brick Store Museum on Main Street in Kennebunk. This town was recognized nationally for its shipbuilding prowess in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century it turned into a nationwide tourist and artist mecca. Though the town preserved its small-town charm, it consistently spearheaded trends on a national level. Edith Barry inherited a brick general store building, built in 1825, from her uncle, William Barry, in the early 1930s, and knew immediately that she would open a museum dedicated to the story of this area. When the Brick Store Museum opened in 1936, it became one of only 10 museums in the entire country to open between the Great Depression

and World War II. Edith Barry funded the museum with her own money and invested her time and hard work for the rest of her life. The Museum absorbed four other buildings on the block, all built between 1810 and 1860, to house its collection of over 70,000 artifacts relating to the culture of the Kennebunks. Today, the museum is open six days a week, offering exhibitions, tours, research and programs year-round. Admission is $7, $6 for seniors, $20 per family ($10 for Family Passes on weekends). Fransiscan Monastery, Kennebunk The Franciscan Monastery Estate was was purchased by Rogers family of Buffalo, N.Y., in 1900. The architectural firm of Green and Wicks was commissioned to build a “splendid house in the Tudor style.” Landscaping was arranged by the Frederick Law

Olmsted Brothers, designers of New York City’s Central Park, and Boston’s Emerald Necklace. In 1947, the estate was purchased by Franciscan Friars who had fled the Soviet Invasion of Lithuania. The home was converted to a monastery, adding the chapel, shrines and statues. Franciscan friars and clergy still live in the monastery, and all are welcome to visit the grounds most days between sunrise and sunset.
